The theme of this part is to describe a natural disaster. It is a stretch of the previous parts, from reporting natural disasters to describing a natural disaster . Furthermore, this part will enable students to master the features of literary journalism, and try to appreciate the use of rhetorical devices such as personification,repetition etc. as well as the writing skills such as presenting data. Thus try to understand the feelings and intentions expressed by the author in the text.In addition, students should learn to use context to understand new words. Analysis of the students The Senior 1 students in the class are familiar with some natural disasters such as earthquake and they show great interests in the topic.Thus,the teacher needs to help them know more and think deeply. Teaching aims According to the Core Competences: Students are able to 1. Learn to describe a natural disaster and make prediction about the passage; 2. To summarize the main idea of a paragraph; 3. Get involved in discussion and cooperate with partners; 4. To appreciate superiority of the socialist system in response to natural disasters. Teaching important points 1. How to help students to predict the main idea of a paragraph by reading the title and picture; 2. How to help students to describe a natural disaster. To arouse students’ interest in the topic and thinking ; Step2 Prediction 1.T asks students to read the title and picture and raise questions(Q1:What does the title mean? Does the earth sleep as you do ? If you can’t go to sleep , how do you feel? Try to imagine what can happen to the earth if it doesn’t sleep? Q2: Who are these people? What are they doing? What’s the meaning of “The Earth Didn’t Sleep ”?) To arouse students’ guessing the meaning of the title and lead in the topic and then appreciate the figure of speech used in the title 2.Brainstorm: What can happen to a city during a big earthquake? To inspire students to think about the impact of earthquake on cities thus stimulate students’ interest in inquiry Step3 While-reading 1. T asks students to skim the text quickly and to summarize the main idea. 2. Skim for text type. 3. Skim for writing order 4. Skim for detailed information of each paragraph. 5. Students divide the five paragraph into three parts 6. To get the detailed information of each paragraph. 7. Students use context to understand new words 8. To summarize the change of people’s feeling before the earthquake, during the earthquake and after the earthquake 9. Students read for language features and writing skills. 10. What other cities or towns have gone through similar changes? To inspire students’ deep and explore into reasons of the rebuilt of Tangshan and other cities which have similar experience and draw lessons from the past.
