After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum. During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past. The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck. You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood. Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends. The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history. ● To get to Bentwood Truck Museum, take Route 29 (Kingston Highway) to Palmer Street. ● Go south on Palmer Street for one block and take a left onto Norman Drive. ● You will see the museum building and the amusement park on your left. ● Parking is available across the street, on your right. 1. In which of the following can visitors take a ride? A. A milk truck. B. An ice-cream truck. C. A bakery truck. D. A school bus. 2. Where is Bentwood Truck Museum? A. On Norman Drive. B. On Palmer Street. C. On Kingston Highway. D. On Route 29. 3. What is TRUE about this museum? A. It is built on an old building. B. It takes two years to rebuild. C. It has 68 trucks now. D. Its opening is on Sunday. B Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even harder. If I have learned anything in my 16 years it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything. Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达) of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse. Here is an example: one night Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they were not as mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble. Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication. 4. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is ________ than with children. A. more difficult B. much easier C. less interesting D. more interesting 5. The underlined phrase “ drift apart” in Paragraph 2 means ________. A. feel happy B. feel sad C. become cold to others D. come closer to each other 6. The example in Paragraph 6 shows that ________. A. Sophie is very rude to her friends. B. Sophie’s parents are unwilling to listen to her. C. Sophie did well in explaining her being late. D. communication is the solution to misunderstanding. 7. All the following statements are correct (正确的) EXCEPT “________”. A. Communication is a two-way matter. B. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing. C. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know. D. When dealing with parents, you only need to listen to them. C We moved to Elmont in 1956. I was 4 years old. Elmont was a wonderful place to grow up. There were lots of kids, great schools and we had a big yard. Having grown up a city kid, my father, Nicholas Denaro, believed that grass was not just to look at, but that children were meant to play on it. We played games and badminton there. A white fence separated our backyard from a small wood. My friends and I jumped the fence and climbed trees. My father had the most amazing hands. He could fix anything. He gave those amazing hands to his son, my younger brother, Frank, who also became handy around the house. But my father saved his green fingers for me. He grew flowers, tomatoes, strawberries and figs and he shared his love of gardening with me. Fourteen years ago, I went to a local nursery and purchased a fig tree for Dad for Father’s Day. My mother, Bridget Denaro, called it the best gift I could have given him. He planted it exactly in the middle of the front yard. He loved that tree and enjoyed delicious figs every year, except just after Sandy hit in 2012. He was so disappointed when cold weather just after the superstorm froze all the remaining figs. In 2015,my father died of aspirating pneumonia (呼吸性肺炎) at 97. We sold our family home of 61years last year. We left behind Dad's tree, full of figs waiting to ripen. We briefly-considered taking it with us, but decided that his Father's Day fig tree belonged in Elmont. The new owners generously allowed me to take some branches so that I could have a precious reminder of my much-loved father and the Elmont home. 8. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph? A. She grew up in a city. B. She only liked climbing trees. C. She had a happy childhood. D. She was naughty and stubborn. 9. What did Father teach the author? A How to garden well. B. How to play games. C. How to color fingers. D. How to fix everything. 10. Why did Father fail to enjoy figs in 2012? A. He was ill in hospital. B. The cold hit the fig tree. C. The tree didn’t bear figs. D. He moved to another city. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To show her love of figs. B. To share her childhood. C. To remember her father. D. To introduce her experience. D I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with praise, he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way. Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate (准确的) when he stood up. Could he be more intent (专心的) while standing up? This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline (纪律) to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits (特点) and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way. I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual (个人的) and unique (独一无二的). It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life. 12. At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him _____. A pay more attention to his study B. keep silent in the room C. finish his homework on time D. get right answers 13. Inspired by the case of his son, the author began to doubt ________. A. the importance of parents B. the old form of education C. the relationship between kids and their parents D. the good grades of some kids 14. According to the passage, which of the following statements is right? A. We should help kids correct their wrong ways. B. Parents should study their kids’ DNA. C. Kids should be taught to behave themselves. D. Parents should love and accept their kids. 15. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage? A. Study hard and you’ll be successful B. Be friendly to your children C. Children’s success in their own style D. Parents’ help with their children’s study One of my earliest memories was watching my mom talk on our old phone. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. A 5. C 6. D 7. 根据文章第一段“Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even harder. (如今,和孩子们生活在一起并应对他们可能是一项艰巨的工作,但和父母生活在一起并应对他们可能更难。)”可知,在作者看来,和父母打交道比和孩子打交道更难。故选A。 根据文章第二段“With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.(对于任何关系,你都需要让对方知道你的感受。如果你不能沟通,你们就会drift apart。当你生父母或其他人的气时,不和他们说话并不能解决任何问题。)”可知,当你生父母或其他人的气时,不和他们说话即不沟通的话,这是不能解决问题的,这只能导致你和他们的关系变得疏远,所以“drift apart”的意思是“关系逐渐疏远”,C选项“become cold to others (对其他人变得冷漠)”与划线短语意思相近。故选C。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第六段“Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they were not as mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.(她的父母一开始很生气,但当索菲解释她为什么迟到后,他们没有那么生气,就放过了她。沟通是关键。如果索菲的父母不愿意听,索菲就会陷入很多麻烦)”可知,这个例子说明了沟通是解决误解的关键。故选D。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.(沟通不是单向的:它是双向的。记住:如果你遇到像索菲那样的情况,告诉对方你的感受——倾听是沟通的关键。)”以及文章第五段“When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you.(和父母打交道时,你总是要让他们对自己作为父母的表现感到满意。如果你想让他们像你一样看待某件事,告诉他们你会听他们说什么,并礼貌地请他们听你说。)”可知,和父母打交道时,不仅要倾听他们,也要让他们倾听你的感受,所以D选项“When dealing with parents, you only need to listen to them.(和父母打交道时,你只需要听他们的。)” D。 C We moved to Elmont in 1956. A She grew up in a city. B. She only liked climbing trees. C. She had a happy childhood. D. She was naughty and stubborn. 9. What did Father teach the author? A. How to garden well. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段“There were lots of kids, great schools and we had a big yard. Having grown up a city kid, my father, Nicholas Denaro, believed that grass was not just to look at, but that children were meant to play on it. We played games and badminton there.”(这里有很多小孩和好的学校,而且我们有一个大院子。 根据第二段“But my father saved his green fingers for me. He grew flowers, tomatoes, strawberries and figs and he shared his love of gardening with me.”(但是父亲把园艺留给了我。 故选A。 根据第四段“He loved that tree and enjoyed delicious figs every year, except just after Sandy hit in 2012. He was so disappointed when cold weather just after the superstorm froze all the remaining figs.”(他特别喜欢那棵树并且每年都会吃那些美味的无花果,除了被寒潮Sandy袭击后的2012年。 通读全文尤其最后一段最后一句“The new owners generously allowed me to take some branches so that I could have a precious reminder of my much-loved father and the Elmont home.”(房子新主人慷慨地让我带走一些树枝,这样的话可以让我想起我深爱的父亲和埃尔蒙特的家。) C。 D I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with praise, he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way. A. pay more attention to his study B. keep silent in the room C. finish his homework on time D. get right answers 13. Parents’ help with their children’s study 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. So they went shopping at a market where everything was expensive. But they didn’t mind (介意)and bought a lot of things. After getting everything they wanted, they called a porter (挑夫) to carry everything and drop to their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn (破烂) , and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to feed himself (吃饱). They asked the porter about the charge (收费) for delivering the goods to their home (送货到家).The old porter quoted a mere $ 20, a price well below the market rate (低于市场价) for delivering in his cart. Yet, the couple argued and bargained (讲价) with the porter, and finally he settled for $ 15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal , so he agreed though he was reluctant (勉强). The couple was very happy thinking about how well they had bargained with the poor porter, paid him $ 15 in advance (提前) and left after giving the porter their address for delivery (送货地址). They reached their home and an hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff (物品). The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust (相信) such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn enough money to feed himself once a day, and you handed him everything we purchased (购买) for our big party. I am sure that , instead of delivering it to our home , he must have disappeared (跑掉了) with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire (询问) and then go to the police station to file a complaint (投诉) against him”. They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. This is our stuff.” She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully. “Madam, please calm down. Jack is not a thief!” retorted the porter, “He is actually terribly sick and isn’t able to earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Just now, on the way to deliver your stuff, he was too weak to go any further in this heat of the noon. Despite falling down, he never forgot his promise, handed me $ 15 and kept telling me to deliver it as fast as possible.” Upon hearing that, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. “He is hungry and poor, but he is truly an honest man,” the husband admitted with a trembling voice. At that, the wife was struck dead with shame, heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. How could she be angry with such a kind and responsible man? Like a child who made a mistake, she had no courage to look into her husband’s eyes. Through all these unexpected things, it eventually dawned on her that honesty has no class and she should respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status. ③承认:admitted/acknowledged ④某人突然间想起某事:it dawned on sb. that/it hit on sb. that 情绪类 ①轻蔑的:contemptuous/scornful ②愤怒的:angry/furious ③羞愧的:shame/ashamed 点睛】【高分句型1】She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully.
