Today, we visit one of the most famous parks—Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. This huge park in the southeastern part of the state of Alaska covers more than 13 thousand square kilometers. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions. As its name suggests, much of Glacier Bay National Park is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover more than 5 thousand square kilometers of the park. Glacier Bay has more than 50 named glaciers, and perhaps as many that have not been named.
Glacier Bay is a large body of water with many smaller inlets. It begins in the southeastern part of Alaska and stretches (延伸) 105 kilometers northwest to the Pacific Ocean. In the 1700s, Glacier Bay was still largely covered by a huge sheet of ice. Since then, however, the glaciers have retreated more than 105 kilometers to the north, uncovering the body of water known as Glacier Bay.
Glacier Bay National Park has a very rich ecosystem. Plants and animals are spread throughout the area. The bay is surrounded by mountains that reach more than 4,500 meters into the sky. The sides of these mountains seem to rise straight out of the water, making for some amazing views.
