What is a GPA?
A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programs.
How to calculate a GPA?

●Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
●Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;

When Mike Coots was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite. It was near his home on the island of Kauai - a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good. Suddenly a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Mike's lower leg and Mike felt no pain.
As he struggled(挣扎), the shark bit down harder. He beat the shark in the face again and again until the shark let him go. As Mike swam back into shore he realized the shark had bit his lower right leg off. Mike's friends rushed to his aid. The doctors later told Mike that's probably what kept him alive during the drive to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was given the OK by his doctors, he started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site o£ his attack. Mike was unshaken. He was curious -why was he attacked?
His curiosity led him to research sharks, and while he never figured out why he became a target, Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around. "I watched a documentary, and I learned about the fact that 70 million sharks a year are killed for their fins(鳍)alone.
He began working with the Hawaii state government to help pass a ban on shark-derived products. He also likes using his photos to spread the message about what's happening to sharks and why it matters. ^Sharks are here on earth for a very important reason, holding together the web of biodiversity, and without them, our seas cannot survive.,,

Buildings, pollution, poor soil, insects, and even car crashes can add to tree loss. However, between 2016 and 2021, the city of Seattle in Washington state was reported to have lost about 255 hectares of tree covering, for which climate change was blamed. Then came the driest summer on Seattle’s record books in 2022. The drier conditions and hotter temperatures have left many trees with brown leaves, naked branches, and extreme seeding. These are all signs of tree stress.
According to Nicholas Johnson, a tree expert for Seattle City Parks, if this warming climate continues we are going to have a lot of trees die. Just like people, under the heat trees get weak.
Researchers from France and Australia studied the effect of hotter temperatures and less rain on more than 3,100 trees and plants in 164 cities across 78 countries. They found about half the trees in the cities were experiencing climate conditions beyond their limits. They also found that by 2050 nearly all trees planted in Australian cities will not survive.
It’s not the gradual change but these extreme swings of too much water, too little water, too much wind, and terrible storms that are going to cause these rapid changes. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed about 10 percent of the trees in New Orleans, Louisiana. And in 2021, Hurricane Ida uprooted many new tree plantings.
To settle the problem of tree loss, non-native trees have been brought to cities for some time. In the city of Bellevue, Washington, experts are growing different kinds of trees specifically for climate change. On city grounds, they are planting baby giant sequoias, just a few centimeters tall. The giant sequoias are not native to the Pacific Northwest area. But the trees can deal with the lack of rain and insects. Once these trees are established, they grow incredibly fast. Having many different kinds and ages of trees is important to keeping urban forests alive.
“Life always finds a way,” said Nicholas Johnson. “And in Seattle, people are helping life find a way.”
28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The bad condition of trees in Seattle.
B.The terrible climate in Seattle in recent years.
C.Natural reasons for tree loss.
D.The signs of tree stress.
29.What is endangering the trees in Australia cities?
A.Buildings. B.Pollution.
C.Extreme climate. D.Car crashes.
30.How do tree experts solve the problem of tree death?
A.By improving planting methods.
B.By changing the kinds of trees.
C.By treating trees as babies.
D.By improving the soil quality.
31.Which is Nicholas Johnson’s attitude to the future of trees in cities?
A.Indifferent. B.Negative. C.Skeptical. D.Positive.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs,”said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.”Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spent about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry, or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction,” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were shocking: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoelaces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
32.What is a problem of using digital media in education according to Professor Greenfield?
A.Having bad relationships with family members.
B.Failing to focus on their schoolwork.
C.Being addicted to online games.
D.Being unable to understand others’ emotions.
33.How do scientists like the results of Greenfield’s experiment?
A.They are alarming. B.They are far from perfect.
C.They still need to be improved. D.They are quite reasonable.
34.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Students learned how to express emotions in the experiment.
B.Students attending the camp did much better in their studies.
C.Too much play with digital devices caused some concerns.
D.More than half of the children in the UK couldn’t tie their shoelaces.
35.What is the author’s advice for readers at the end of the text?
A.To use your smart phones and computers less.
B.To learn to tie your shoelaces confidently.
C.To learn to be an understanding friend.
D.To make more friends through your smart phones.

Ballet is a way of life in my family. My elder sister Serena is now dancing at a top theatre and I am also a good ballet dancer at my school. Though my mom always wants me to follow in my sister’s footsteps, my love for ballet has been fading over the years and I have been eager for a new challenge.
One day when I left the dance studio after school, I walked past a gym and was attracted by the boxers (拳击手) who were fighting inside the boxing ring. I was deeply impressed by how hard they fought and how fast they moved.
“That is what I really want!” I told myself.
It was not a decision made on the spot. In fact, I had long been attracted to boxing. I even had the Oakwood High School Boxing Competition Sign- up Sheet in my backpack for two months. That was what I really wanted to have a try. But I was afraid to disappoint my parents, who had such high expectations of me when it came to ballet.
Tired of trying to keep up with my sister, I made up my mind to carve my own path. The next day, I gathered my courage and told Serena about my decision. At first, Serena thought I was just joking. But when she saw that I was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Make best use of your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” I insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
“You will learn what it exactly means soon enough!” Serena replied impatiently.
“I will stick to my own passion, no matter what it is!” I shouted back.
Touched by my determination, Serena gave in and promised not to tell my decision to our parents.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
It turned out that Serena was absolutely right.

●Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
●Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
●Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
●Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
●Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.

Sure enough, working part-time gives me a sense of freedom, because I can be financially independent, which helps build my confidence when speaking to people and socializing with people I work with. Besides, properly regulated part-time work is a good way to help us learn skills that we will need in the future.
So doing part-time jobs is really worth our effort. But we have to strike a balance between study and work.

67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

【答案】
It turned out that Serena was absolutely right. The boxing gym was filled with boys, all of whom were tough and strong. I felt somewhat out of place, being the only girl there. The initial training sessions were challenging, both physically and mentally. My ballet-trained body was flexible but lacked the power and endurance required for boxing. However, I persevered, driven by my passion. I knew that mastering boxing would not happen overnight. With each training session, I felt myself becoming faster and stronger.
Finally, the big day came. It was time for the Oakwood High School Boxing Competition. Standing in the ring, I reminded myself why I was there. As the bell rang, I moved quickly, utilizing the footwork I had honed in ballet to maintain balance and timing. My initial nervousness melted away, replaced by focus and determination. When the final round ended, I was exhausted but delighted. I had given it my all, and that was what mattered most. Later, I received word that I had won third place. More importantly, I had found my own path and embraced my true passion.
