The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52%
HEATING 28%
COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6%
LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.
SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells have cut costs by 80% since 2010, making them viable in numerous regions.
WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (涡轮机) in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates persist. “The scale of this transition is staggering,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental imperative; it’s economically inevitable.
1. Which two categories combined account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A. Electricity and Heating. B. Heating and Cooling.
C. Appliances and Lighting. D. Cooling and Appliances.
2. Which technology is highlighted as cost-effective for diverse climates?
A. Heat pumps. B. Smart grids. C. Solar panels. D. Wind turbines.
3. What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the energy transition?
A. The dominance of gas boilers. B. The increase in solar efficiency.
C. The need for higher investment. D. The breakthrough in heat pump technology.

In 2022, feeling unwell at home, celebrated novelist and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi fell, broke his neck and woke up paralyzed, unable to move his hands or body. For a year, he recovered in hospitals before returning home, where he now relies on full-time care.
Kureishi poured his anger and depression into writing. Just days after the accident, he began dictating (口述) his work Shattered to his partner and son. The book explores his loss of independence and the shame of relying on others. Yet writing gave him purpose: “Even on painkillers, I wrote daily blogs. People cared about my story—it kept me going,” he says.
Today, Kureishi uses a wheelchair and cannot stand or hold objects. Despite limited mobility, he works daily. “My job — talking and writing — saved me,” he explains. Many paralyzed patients cannot return to work, but Kureishi continues creating. “I earn money and support my family. I write more now than before,” he adds. His determination overcomes physical limits, proving creativity develops well in tough times. Each morning, he tackles physical therapy (治疗) with the same discipline he applies to writing, viewing both as acts of rebellion against his condition.
Reflecting on his accident, he recalls hospital patients with similar stories: a man who jumped into an empty pool and another who tripped over a garden tool. “These unpredictable moments change everything. You are upset, asking ‘Why me?’, but anger gradually goes away when you rebuild purpose,” he says. Kureishi acknowledges the unfairness but focuses on what he can control — his work and relationships. He emphasizes gratitude for his support system, crediting loved ones for helping him handle daily challenges.
Looking ahead, Kureishi remains ambitious. He’s writing another book, working together on a film with director Luca Guadagnino, and eagerly awaits Shattered’s US release. His days combine creativity and routine: mornings devoted to writing, afternoons to physical therapy, and evenings spent brainstorming new ideas. “Disability isn’t the end,” he insists. “It’s a new chapter — one where I write my own rules.”
4. What happened to Hanif Kureishi in 2022?
A. He had a life-changing accident. B. He had a big argument with his son.
C. He suddenly lost his ability to speak. D. He failed to complete his work on time.
5. What does the underlined word “rebellion” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Doubt. B. Struggle. C. Argument. D. Complaint.
6. Why does Kureishi mention other patients’ stories?
A. To highlight the predictability of events.
B. To explain the process of physical therapy.
C. To show the importance of a positive mentality.
D. To describe the challenges of writing while disabled.
7. What can we learn about Kureishi from the last paragraph?
A. He is giving up on recovery. B. He is very angry about his disability.
C. He thinks his disability is not affecting him. D. He is determined to live life on his terms.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. D

Recently, African ports are expected to welcome a unique border-patrol (巡逻) “team” — Giant African Pouched Rats wearing small red vests. Relying on their remarkable sense of smell, they are about to play a crucial role in the fight against illegal wildlife trade.
In regions such as West Africa, the rich wildlife resources attract enormous tourists. However, poaching (偷猎) and smuggling (偷运) activities are pushing some species to the danger of extinction. Poachers, driven by huge profits, either capture animals for the illegal pet trade or cruelly kill elephants, rhinos, etc. to obtain ivory and rhino horns. These precious items are then smuggled to other countries for sale, severely disturbing local biodiversity.
Isabelle Szott, a behavioral ecologist, previously cooperated with the organization APOPO in Tanzania, which has successfully trained these rats for various tasks before, like detecting dangerous weapons and some infectious diseases. Given their excellent olfactory (嗅觉) ability, APOPO believes the rats also have great potential in port prevention and control.
Szott’s team carefully selected and trained 11 rats. In a specially-made training box in the laboratory, researchers placed different smell samples to teach the rats to identify the smells of poached animals. Each time a rat accurately detected the target smell and signaled, it received delicious food as a reward. After training, these rats can not only recognize the smells of elephant tusks, rhino horns and African blackwood, but also precisely distinguish them from 146 other smells.
Lab training is just the first step. Some rats then underwent field drills in simulated warehouses and real ports. When these rats get too old to work, they will “retire” honorably and enjoy their remaining years surrounded by fruits, vegetables, and dried fish. The involvement of Giant African Pouched Rats is expected to bring new hope to tackling wildlife poaching and smuggling.
8. Why are these rats a good choice for border-patrol?
A. They are out of extinction. B. They are sensitive to the smell.
C. They can maintain local biodiversity. D. They can distract poachers’ attention.
9. What tasks have the African Pouched Rats been trained for before?
A. Detecting threatening arms. B. Controlling wildlife products.
C. Protecting tourists in West Africa. D. Identifying different kinds of fruits.
10. How did the researchers train the 11 rats in the laboratory?
A. They satisfy the rats’ appetite as bonus. B. They taught the rats to fit in the real fields.
C. They let the rats play with different samples. D. They led the rats to track the poachers’ smells.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. New Hope Brought by APOPO for the Rats in Red Vests

China has made remarkable achievements in space exploration. The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) aims to land its astronauts on the moon before 2030 and has recently shown the spacesuit they plan to use. However, the name of the suit is still up in the air.
As reported by Space News, the CMSA revealed their new extravehicular (舱外的) activity (EVA) spacesuit at an event on September 28 in Chongqing, China. The suit was modeled by Wang Yaping, China’s second woman in space, and Zhai Zhigang, another astronaut. The presentation mainly focused on the suit’s outer features. In particular, the new suit is slimmer and lighter than the CMSA’s earlier Feitian EVA suit used for low Earth orbit. It is covered in a protective fabric to guard against extreme temperatures and lunar dust. The suits also have a wide-ranging, non-reflective shield (防护)and both short and long focus length cameras. Unlike the earlier suits, these lunar suits allow for much more flexibility while moving on the moon.
Apart from the practicalities, representatives explained that aesthetics (美学) were also important during the design phase. The appearance of the new spacesuit was emphasized. According to CNN, the mainly white spacesuits have red stripes on their upper parts inspired by the “flying apsaras” from ancient Chinese art. “The stripes on the legs are designed to look like ‘rocket launch flames,’ representing a strong-willed and determined spirit, and that’s the key.” as Zhang Wanxin, director of the CMSA’s engineering office, told China’s CCTV. This weekend’s announcement also saw the CMSA officials task the nation with helping name the new suits, which will be chosen later.
This not only shows China’s remarkable achievements in space exploration but also reflects its cultural pride and rapid advances in science and technology. By integrating traditional Chinese cultural elements into modern technology, China showcases its unique charm and great power to the world. Meanwhile, the public naming initiative encourages citizens to engage with the space program, creating a closer link between the space and the people.
12. What is one advantage of the new spacesuit?
A. It is more user-friendly.
B. It is more cost-effective.
C. It is more pressure-resistant.

13 Why is the appearance emphasized in the new design?
A. To follow the international trend.
B. To adjust the lunar environment.
C. To highlight Chinese cultural elements.
D. To downplay the aesthetic value.
14. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The technical descriptions of the new spacesuits.
B. The cultural pride behind China’s space exploration.
C. The future prospect of the China Manned Space Agency.
D. The international development in space technology.
15. What is the writing purpose of the text?
A. To report China’s exploration progress.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Bobby, a six - year - old boy without a father, was sitting in his backyard on a snowy day. He was trembling (发抖) with cold, for he wore only sports shoes with holes in them, which couldn’t keep the cold out.
He’d been there for nearly an hour, trying to come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift. But he failed. With a heavy heart and tears in his eyes, he headed towards the street with shops.
He walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but he did not have money. It was getting dark and he was about to turn back home reluctantly (不情愿地), a glimmer (微光) on the roadside caught his eye. It was a shiny dime (一角硬币)! For a moment, Bobby felt unbelievably rich. He hurried into shop after shop, only to be told that his dime was too little to buy anything.
Finally, he went into a flower shop and wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby showed his dime and asked to buy a single flower for his mom’s Christmas present. The shop owner, looking at Bobby’s sincere face and his dime, gently put a hand on Bobby’s shoulder. “Wait right here. I’ll see what I can do for you,” he said. As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.
Paragraph 1:
A few minutes later, the shop owner came out.

Paragraph 2:
With the bunch (束) of roses in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then began to run.

【答案】范文
A few minutes later, the shop owner came out. He asked Bobby to come to the counter. There, before Bobby’s eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobby’s heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. “That will be ten cents, young man.” the shop keeper said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true? He wondered.
With the bunch of roses in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then began to run. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. “Look, Mother, what have I bought for you?” Bobby called out in the backyard. Mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her. “Merry Christmas!” Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Tearfully, Mother hugged her son in her arms. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn’t feel cold at all.

第一节 (共15小题:每小题2.5分, 满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
The Future of Clean Energy in Homes

C
B. Measures Taken to Prevent Poaching and Smuggling
C. The Remarkable Life of Giant African Pouched Rats
D. A New Force in Fighting Wildlife Smuggling
