Lena,a 62-year-old woman living in a quiet Canadian town, found an old guitar in the attic
last week. She was sorting old photos and childhood toys when her hand touched the cool wood,
and the familiar shape brought a big smile. The guitar's wooden body was grey, and its strings (
were broken, but it brought back a flood of warm old stories.
When Lena was 7,her father often taught her to play the guitar by their lakeside house. One
summer evening,he asked her to play Happy Birthday for her little brother Max.Max laughed and
cheered even when she messed up notes."Music makes every moment special,"Dad would say,
smiling as Lena struggled with the music notes.Neighbors passed by to listen and sang along, while her
dog Buddy moved his tail happily and touched her hand softly. That year, her father gave her the guitar
as a New Year gift, telling her to record moments with the family by using music.Lena spent hours
practicing every day under the big tree in the park near her home, her dog Buddy lying at her feet.
Now,so many years later,Lena softly cleaned the guitar. She replaced the strings and tried to
play the old song-her fingers hurt a little, but the song felt like a hug from the past.Though her
(点石联考)高一英语第3页(共8页)
fingers were not as quick as before and her voice was a bit shaky, the same happiness filled her heart.
Looking in the mirror, she saw grey hair, but her eyes shone just like they did by the lake.
"Some things never change,"Lena said softly, touching the guitar's old neck. She missed her
father, but the guitar made her feel close. The guitar looks old,but in her mind, she was still that 7-
year-old girl, laughing under the sunset with her family.Age may make us look older, but the music in
our hearts remains as young as ever.
24.What made Lena think of the old stories?
A.Her dog Buddy.

C.The lakeside house.
D.The old photos.

C.To spread music to neighbors.
D.To celebrate Max's birthday.
26.How did Lena feel when playing the old song years later?
A.Sad.
B.Proud.
C.Regretful.

Sports might have started as a way to survive.Long ago, people ran, jumped, and climbed to stay
alive.Hunters were known for their special skills.Wall paintings from centuries ago, showing activities
like wrestling or dancing, were found in Egypt. The ancient Greeks made a big change by holding the
first Olympic Games.
Modern sports began in England in the early 19th century and then spread globally. These became
the models for sports such as football that we play now.
Organized sports, whether swimming or ice hockey((冰球),are serious forms of play. There are
rules to obey, skills and positions to learn, and plans to carry out.Team sports like soccer require you
to work with teammates, while individual sports such as tennis focus on your personal performance.
There's no doubt that sports are valuable. The American Academy of Pediatrics says play is
important for kids'and teens'thinking, bodies, social lives and feelings.Sports exercise our bodies and
teach us about ourselves and our world.Organized sports get us using our bodies and minds, which
makes us more imaginative, curious, and creative. The skills we learn can help us in school and later
at work.
In a perfect world, sports would always be fun.But in reality, sports can cause physical hurt like
broken bones, and also harm in mind.In team sports, misunderstandings and hurt feelings are part of
the learning process.Sports are supposed to bring people together, but they can also drive people
apart. But even when they're not always a cheerful experience, they show us how to face life's
challenges.
You don't have to be on a school team. But many, like school coaches, have found ways to make
play their work, which makes them feel whole.
There's no better place to play and learn about the world than on a sports field. No matter what
sport you choose, the key is to play for fun. When you do,you're already a winner.
28.What can we infer about the origin of early sports?
A.It was led by ancient hunters.

C.It was driven by practical needs
D.It started with the ancient Olympic Games.

30.Which may the author agree with?

B.People can play mainly for fun and enjoyment.
C.School teams can be of great importance for all.
D.Sports usually require changing and strict rules.
31.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.The Origin of Olympic Games
B.The Rules of Modern Sports

Saturn (is famous for the beautiful rings around it.Now,it's getting attention for being
even more amazing.Scientists have discovered 128 new moons around Saturn, bringing the planet's
total to 274.A moon is any naturally formed object that moves around a planet.Moons come in different
shapes and sizes.
Scientists discovered the moons with a powerful telescope(望远镜),which is used to study stars
and planets in great detail.Scientists took many photos of areas in space and put them on top of each
other to make the moons appear bright enough to discover.
Most of Saturn's new moons are small objects, just one or two miles wide-quite different to
Earth's Moon, which is a 2,159-mile-wide ball. These space rocks are in unusual orbits (too.
They go around Saturn in the opposite direction to its own movement. At between 6.5 million and 18
million miles away from the ringed planet, the newly discovered moons are also further away than
Saturn's biggest moon,Titan.
Many people are curious about the fact that Saturn has so many moons while Earth only has one.
According to scientists, many millions of years ago,the huge planet's gravity (attracted some
rocks and ice.Over time, some of them crashed against each other, breaking into smaller pieces or
coming together to create many small moons.
The new moons were first discovered by a team of scientists led by Edward Ashton, and were
recently accepted officially by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).Saturn now is the planet
with the most moons-Jupiter is not far behind with 95.However,Dr.Ashton believes this might be
the limit for moon discovery."I don't think Jupiter will ever catch up,"he said."With present
technology,I don't think we can do better than what has already been done,"he added.
32.Why does Saturn gain new attention?
A.It is circled by beautiful rings.
B.It is studied easily through telescope
C.Its more photos have been taken.
D.Its new moons have been observed.
33.What does the underlined part "the ringed planet"in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Saturn.
B.Titan.
C.Moon.
D.Earth.
34.What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss about Saturn?
A.Where it came from.
B.How its moons orbit it.
C.Why it has so many moons.
D.When its rings were formed.
35.What do Dr.Ashton's words mean?
A.Current technology needs improvement.
B.Jupiter will soon catch up with Saturn.
C.He is satisfied with his team's work.
D.Saturn's new moons will appear soon.

Our school had a "Grow Your Own Tomatoes"competition.Students worked in pairs, and the rule
was clear:We must grow tomatoes from seeds ()The winner would get a small gold cup.Mr.
Lee,the principal ()said,"This competition isn't just about having the best tomatoes. It's
about learning to wait and work hard."But Tod,my partner, wanted to win so much."Growing from
seeds takes months,"he said worriedly."What if our seeds don't grow well?"
I thought for a long time.I knew Mr.Lee was right, but Tod's idea sounded good to think about.
"Let's buy young tomato plants from the market,"he said."Everyone will be busy with their own
plants. No one will know our tomatoes didn't start from seeds,"he said again.I felt nervous, but I also
wanted to win.
That weekend,we went to the market quietly. The seller gave us three strong young tomato plants.
We carried them in a bag, afraid someone from school would see us.We planted them in our school
garden.Though we didn't water them every day, they grew fast.Soon, big green leaves grew out,and
red tomatoes came out.
Two months later, the competition ended. Our tomatoes were bright red,big and round,so we
won the first prize! We stood on the stage, holding the small gold cup proudly, while the principal
praised us for our“hard work”.
But when Tod and I walked back to class,we passed Class 5's garden.Their tomato plants were
smaller, with only a few small tomatoes, but they looked healthy. We saw two boys from Class 5
carefully tying the plants to small sticks to keep them straight. They talked to their teacher loudly.
"We planted seeds on March 15th,they said."Every morning,we came to water them. Some days,
the soil was dry,so we watered them again in the evening. The teacher smiled and said,"You did a
