Two British women have completed an 8,000 nautical mile(15,00 km)journey across the
Pacific Ocean from Peru to Cairns,Australia.
Jess Rowe and Miriam Payne arrived at Cairns Yacht Club on Saturday evening, when
they were greeted by family and friends.
“Those final few hours were brutal(糟糕),”Rowe said.“We honestly thought we
weren't going to make it.To finally be here, after talking about it for so long, just feels
incredible..”
Rowe,28,and Payne,25,pushed off from Lima,Peru,on 5 May.They set a record as
the first female team and the youngest to row across the Pacific,non-stop and unsupported.
Over 165 days at sea,they averaged 50 nautical miles a day,rowing in tandem()during
the day, with one rowing at night while her crewmate slept in a small cabin.
Kept alive with 400 kg of mostly freeze-dried food,a water desalinator (and a
growing unit for micro-greens,the pair relied on a solar energy system for a fraction of the
power they needed. For much of their journey, they had no navigation equipment or beacon
(灯塔),making them almost invisible to other ships.
They raised more than 86,000 for the Outward Bound Trust.Payne, from Yorkshire,
had not been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic by herself in 2022 in a record time. There
were moments when they feared they would not make it,she said.As early as day six,a

In a single year, one polar bear can leave roughly 300 kilograms of food for other animals
to dine on.Altogether, polar bears provide 7.6 million kilograms of carrion()for other
animals throughout the Arctic,researchers estimate.
The findings highlight the crucial role these "top hunters"play in feeding a vast variety of
species and predict that food web might be destabilized as climate change warms the Arctic,
endangering polar bear populations.
Scientists have long known that polar bears typically eat part of the prey()-usually
seals-then leave the rest. However, the importance of those leftovers has been long
overlooked, says Nicholas Pilfold,a scientist at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
Pilfold and colleagues dove into studies and observations of carrion consumption around
leftovers dating as far back as the 1930s.The team also analyzed studies on how many calories
seals can provide and how many seals polar bears consume.
A polar bear kills roughly one seal every three to five days, which equals about 1,000
kilograms of food every year.A bear eats a majority of that mass, leaving some 30 percent up
for grabs.Considering there are an estimated 26,000 polar bears in the Arctic, all those
leftovers add up to millions of kilograms of leftovers, including arctic foxes, wolves and gulls.
Jon Aars,a polar bear expert at the Norwegian Polar Institute, says the findings come as
no surprise."The leftovers are arather important'food source for other species, particularly
at a time when alternative food is not so easy to get,"he says.
But the Arctic is warming, affecting polar bear populations and,in turn, their leftovers.
"If we're going to start to see declines in polar bears,we're likely going to see declines in that
carrion biomass,"Pilfold says.
"It's difficult to predict the effect that the decrease of polar bears'carrion might have on
other species,"Aars says."But it will have an impact one way or another, depending on
which species and which "part of the Arctic we look at.
28.What does the underlined word "destabilized"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Enlarged.
B.Simplified.
C.Restored.
D.Shaken.
29.How did Pilfold and his team conduct their research?
A.Through long-term field observations.
B.By reviewing past data and seal energy.
C.By focusing on the needs of other animals.
D.By estimating the annual decline in carrion.

30.What will happen if polar bear populations decline?
A.Food supply for other animals will lessen.
B.The seal population will increase rapidly.
C.Arctic foxes will become the top hunters.
D.Competition among polar bears will decrease.
31.What is Jon Aars's attitude toward the findings of the study?
A.Surprised and doubtful.
B.Indifferent and dismissive.
C.Accepting and concerned.
D.Confident and certain.

The risks associated with sitting lead many health authorities to warn against spending
too much time doing so.The sit-stand desk is a popular way of helping people get upright.
But how effective is it?
Dozens of studies have been run on the potential health effects of sit-stand desks.A
recent review, led by Visier Alfonso at University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain and
published in BMC Public Health in May,selected 17 for examination.Alfonso limited her
analysis to those that looked mainly at university students.
Of the four studies that looked at mental health, three confirmed that sit-stand desk use
reduced anxiety and improved mood.Of the four on back pain, however, only one revealed
significant pain reduction among sit-stand desk users. The one study Alfonso found that
looked at the cardiovascular and metabolic(新陈代谢的)benefits of sit-stand desks suggested
that they do result in users having lower blood pressure.
Studies conducted on more varied groups reach different conclusions.A general review of
over 50 papers on sit-stand desk use,led by April Chambers at the University of Pittsburgh
and published in Applied Ergonomics in 2019,found only weak evidence that their use
improves cardiovascular health.
Analysis of other health-related biomarkers were also no different in most studies. This
suggested that the desks were not providing metabolic benefits that might prevent diseases like
type 2 diabetes. What's more,Dr Chambers found no evidence that their use influenced
mood.
However, notable benefits did emerge in the area of lower-back pain.Of 17 papers that
studied this question, eight revealed evidence that giving participants the option to stand
significantly reduced their lower-back pain. This suggests that standing may help some people
with this condition,an effect that may be more noticeable among people past university age.
So what is sit-stand desk to do?Both reviews agree that no significant harm is associated
with the use of sit-stand desks. And although some of the differences between their
conclusions may come from chance or sample size,it is also possible that different benefits go
to users of different ages.
32.What is the author's primary purpose in mentioning the two reviews?
A.To highlight a scientific agreement.
B.To present conflicting research findings.
C.To illustrate the evolution of desk design.
D.To underscore the risks of inactive behavior.
33.What might explain the different conclusions between the two reviews?
A.Variations in research duration.
B.The age groups studied.
C.The types of desks used.
D.Levels of participants'activity.
34.Regarding sit-stand desks, which conclusion is best supported by the text?
A.They offer clear metabolic advantages.
B.Their psychological benefits are undeniable.
C.They pose no significant health risks.
D.Their effectiveness for back pain is strongest.

As a teacher,I'm constantly impressed by the excitement that students show about
creating stories. This article will detail the steps for helping students reflect on authors'
writings and take steps toward their own creation.
Sharing mentor()voices.After conducting over 800 interviews with authors,I've
concluded that it's vital to expose students to a variety of authors.36 Each choice on a
page is intentional and is often crafted from a piece of an author's life.Having the opportunity
to hear authors speak also shows students that writing involves real people.
37 After looking at the words of authors,I next work with students to expand their
thinking about the stories they have with them.I often use transition()words in a whole
class,student-to-student storying activity.38 The process is like a write-around in which
I or a student volunteer begins the story, and then it's passed around line by line.By
emphasizing the importance of transitions, students can see how a story can progress
logically.
Developing a "beat sheet".From the initial brainstorming, the beats of a story begin to
come together. One of the key aspects of writing is planning.39 Either can result in a
strong story, but the improvisational()writing approach can often lead to much more
rewriting.Students can craft a "beat sheet",where they can trace how characters change and
what makes them change.
Conclusion zone:"publication".Students can then explore sharing their story in some
way.40 Anthology()projects can be a class project where examples of writing can
be collected and shared. While publication isn't the end-all,be-all of writing,it is rewarding.
A.Encouraging the students to think.
B.Focusing on lines to push the story.
C.There are writers who plan and those who don't.
D.The path to publication can be an activity in class.
E.More power can be found in exploring the stories authors share.
F.Writers can decide the elements in a story in a beat sheet approach.
G.This method helps young writers come up with what to write next.

As a sophomore(大二学生),Elizabeth Vaughan enrolled in a choir class. The first
concert of the school year was to be a performance of songs from the musical Oliver and
Vaughan landed a solo. She wasn't nervous until the week before, when she discovered that
the entire school would be in attendance.
On the day of the show,Vaughan was backstage, looking through the curtains to find the
hall was filled with people.Everyone filed in:All the classes, upperclassmen and younger
students..Also attended were janitors(看门人),lunch ladies and parents,It was just packed..
The curtain opened and the choir began to sing.Vaughan looked out at the faces in the
crowd and noticed that some of their eyes were filled with disinterest. Then she noticed
something else:a single microphone standing at the front of the stage, lit by a bright
spotlight, ready for her solo.It was a problem she hadn't anticipated:their choir teacher had
never taught them how to sing into a microphone.
And yet it was Vaughan's turn to sing. The teacher motioned for her to go up in front of
the stage and so she walked right up in front of that microphone.
Despite her uncertainty, her solo began smoothly. She felt excited, singing so confidently
in front of everyone. Then she got to the big finale-the last high note. With her lips nearly
touching the microphone, the note came exploding out of the speakers,ear-piercing and
deafeningly loud. She looked out at the audience and every single person-involuntarily,their
heads snapped back in their chairs. Some of them had their jaws dropped wide open.
Vaughan wanted the stage to open up and swallow her whole.
The school day was only half over by the time the concert ended,so Vaughan had to go
back to class.Walking along the hallway, her eyes downcast, she spotted a pair of large
athletic shoes. She stopped and she looked up into the face of the new guy.He was a senior.
And she had never met him,but she was just preparing herself for the embarrassment of what
he was about to say.

A项“为
故选A项。
故选A项。

由第四段“They set a record as the first female team and the youngest to row across the
Pacific,non-stop and unsupported..”
由第五段“..they had no navigation equipment or beacon, making them almost invisible
to other ships.”
由第六段“Payne...,had not been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic by herself in
故选A项。
故选A项。
Visier Alfonso
Apl
述“limited her analysis to those that looked mainly at university students”(将分析主要局限于大学生),而
文章结尾也直接点明:“different benefits go to users of different ages”
Both reviews agree that no significant harm is associated with the use of sit-stand desks'”
五段指出代谢指标“no different”且“not providing metabolic benefits'”;B项“其心理益处不可否认”错误,因
为第二项研究发现“no evidence that their use influenced mood”;D项“其对背痛的效果最显著”具有片面性,
最适合本文的标题是“C.The Truth About Sit-Stand Desks”(关于坐站两用桌的真相)。
B项“To Stand or Not to Stand?”(站还是不站?)
D项“The End of Sitting?”(久坐的终结?)
A项。

A.promising(有前途的)最符合语境。故选A项。
描述基斯在l986年接受了心脏移植手术,B.experienced(经历,接受)最准确。
移植手术后他成功延续了职业生涯,C.continue(继续)最准确。
均不符合“mark.,and describe...”
故选A项。
year-old boy'”的语境。故选A项。
在采访中回忆过去,A.recalled(回忆)最准确。
故选A项。
A、,C、D均与后文“families struggle with the
许多家庭为日常生活的各种需求而挣扎,C.demands(要求,需求)最准确。A、B、D均不能体
A、B、D均不符
合“Heart of Gold Gala and Concert'”的活动描述。
孩子突然领悟到自己虽与众不同但不比别人差,D.realization(认识,领悟)最准确。A、B、C
冠词“a”。
handle'”。
果,且与逻辑主语“The idea of..”
“among the museum's most popular”后接名词复数表示“最受欢迎的展品之一”,
65.that/which考查定语从句关系词。
Dear fellow students,
As the president of the Student Union,I am writing to express my concern about the lack of physical
activity among us and to call for action.
Physical exercise is crucial not only for building a strong body but also for refreshing our minds and
improving academic performance.Regular activity reduces stress and helps us concentrate better.Simple
activities like jogging during breaks, playing basketball after class,or joining group exercises are easy to start.
Even a daily 15-minute workout can make a difference.
Let's take action now!Choose a sport you enjoy,invite friends to join,and make exercise a daily habit.A
healthier lifestyle begins with each small step we take.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

she could say thanks to the senior,he said goodbye and disappeared into the crowd.Vaughan felt confidence
rising from inside her.She went from deciding she would never sing in front of people again as long as she lived
to considering that maybe she could sing and yeah, believing she had a powerful voice.
Inspired by the student's confidence in her,Vaughan went on to study music. She's now a professional

W:Great!I've also heard it's well-known for its ocean history.
M:Yes,there's a special museum exhibition about ship building and old sailing routes.Would you like to go
there now?

W:The design is really cool.Where did you find them?
M:At a store in the mall. They were having a big sale.

W:Wow.How long is the sale on for?

W:Excuse me,that jacket looks incredibly familiar.I had one just like it that went missing recently.
M:Really? But this is a men's style.I've owned this for ages.Don't you remember me wearing it?
W:I can't say that I do.I'm almost convinced it's mine.Would you mind if I just tried it on quickly?
M:Are you sure?I can assure you it's not yours.
W:I remember having mine when I met a friend for coffee two weeks ago.I must have left it at the cafe.
M:Well,I got this jacket about eight years ago from a market.Look, there's even a small tear inside the
pocket. But if you insist,go ahead and try it.
W:Thank you.Oh,it's far too loose on me.I suppose you were right. It can't be mine.
M:Exactly.I told you so.
W:You were right. My mistake.I'll just have to go and get a replacement for the one I lost.

W:Hi,Tom.Nice to see you. What brings you to this neighborhood?
M:Hey,Lisa.I'm actually here to look at a small apartment for rent. You've been living here for a while,
right?
W:That's right,almost five years now.
M:How do you find it?It seems pretty lively around here.I just heard some loud music from across the street.
W:Well, when I first moved in,this area was much quieter. Now,with so many new young residents,it can
get a bit noisy, especially on weekends.
M:That's a shame.Have you talked to the property manager about the noise?
W:Several times,but nothing really changes.
M:So,why not consider moving out?
W:Honestly, the main reason is the convenient location. It's close to my work place and all the shops.Finding
somewhere else with the same convenience would cost me a lot more.
M:Are the rents around here that high now?
W:Absolutely. For a similar-sized apartment in this area, the rent has almost doubled. And many of them
don't even include basic furniture.
M:I see your point.
