When thinking of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctors, one might picture an elderly man with a long beard sitting in front of a medicine chest. However, He Suye, a young and talented physician in the latest medical-romance drama The Best Thing, challenges that traditional image. Played by the 27-year-old actor Zhang Linghe, Mr. He is a professional TCM specialist with a gentle personality, but outside of work. he enjoys hobbies like skateboarding and malatang, a type of hotpot, reshaping common views of TCM doctors.
The Best Thing follows Shen Xifan, a hotel manager suffering from frequent headaches and trouble sleeping. In her search for a cure, she meets Mr. He, and their relationship deepens through medical consultations. To play a genuine TCM practitioner, Zhang studied Chinese medicine with practicing physicians, learning traditional diagnostic (诊断的) and treatment methods. This process helped him gain a deeper appreciation for TCM’s integrated philosophy, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and environment, viewing health as a balance between these elements.
The drama creatively integrates TCM knowledge by naming each episode after a type of Chinese herbal medicine, connecting TCM’s healing methods to the storyline. For example, in one episode, Mr. He performs “wet cupping” to treat a breathing emergency, showcasing TCM’s role in critical care.
The drama particularly appeals to younger viewers. With the growing integration of TCM and Western medicine, as well as expanding international exchanges, TCM practitioners and students now have more diverse career opportunities. For instance, acupuncture (针灸) is now covered in health insurance plans in many countries. Zhang Linghe believes that passion is the driving force behind a successful career - just like his character, He, who remains committed to his path in TCM despite numerous challenges, including initial opposition from his father. Zhang hopes to introduce TCM to a global audience, especially younger generations, through the drama’s release on international platforms.
4. What do we know about He Suye?
A. He challenges the principles of TCM.
B. He is an actor starring in The Best Thing.
C. He presents a modern image of a TCM doctor.
D. He has the same hobbies as other TCM doctors.
5. Why did Zhang Linghe learn TCM techniques?
A To prepare for the role.
B. To treat his own illnesses.
C. To become a practicing physician.
D. To appreciate TCM’s philosophy.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning acupuncture?
A. To explain the diverse changes in future careers.
B. To demonstrate TCM’s international recognition.
C. To show the drama’s popularity among younger viewers.
D. To emphasize TCM’s advantages over Western medicine.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Traditional Approach to TCM
B. A New Vision for TCM’s Future
C. Exploring the Ancient Roots of TCM
D. Redefining TCM for a Global Audience
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

Among world languages, English places perhaps the highest value on the expressions of thanks, especially in formal and business settings. So it’s logical that English speakers tend to conflate the expression of thankfulness with the feeling of thankfulness. If somebody didn’t say “thanks,” we often think, they must not have been very grateful. And yet, in English, “thank you” gets used so frequently that it can easily start to feel habitual.
But do we say it as much as we think in our casual interactions with family and friends? A new research paper titled Universals and Cultural Diversity in the Expression of Thankfulness suggests that no, we do not.
The research team behind the paper looked for expressions of thankfulness in daily informal interactions across eight languages: English, Italian, Polish, Russian, Lao, Cha’palaa, Murrinhpatha, and Siwu. The findings suggest the universal way in which thankfulness is expressed is not through giving thanks, but rather through participation in a social agreement in which mutual (相互的) assistance and working together are the norm. In fact, the practice of giving thanks seems to have little impact on the practice of mutual exchange.
The practice of giving thanks also varies culturally In India, for example, people — especially when they are your elders, relatives, or close friends — tend to feel that by thanking them, you’re weakening your closeness with them and creating formality and distance that shouldn’t exist! In contrast, in England, expressing thankfulness through words is seen as a positive strengthening of relationships, promoting goodwill and connection.
Nick Enfield, lead researcher of the study, suggests that most of the 6,000 to 7,000 world languages don’t have a word for “thank you.” “When we consider the negative effects of thanking close relations alongside the fact that many languages are spoken in very small communities where speakers are likely to know each other, that claim starts to feel quite reasonable.”
8. What does the underlined word “conflate” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Compare. B. Replace. C. Figure out. D. Mix up.
9. How do people express thankfulness universally according to the study?
A. By saying thanks directly.
B. By making social agreements.
C. By using body language.
D. By helping and cooperating.
10. How do Indians view the practice of giving thanks to relatives?
A. It weakens their bond. B. It reduces their social distance.
C. It enhances their connection. D. It promotes their mutual trust.
11. What does Nick Enfield imply in the last paragraph?
A. Many cultures do not emphasize thankfulness.
B. Thankfulness might not be expressed in words.
C. Small communities prefer to thank close friends.
D. The negative effects of thanking should be avoided.
D 9. D 10. A 11. B
根据第一段第二句“So it’s logical that English speakers tend to conflate the expression of thankfulness with the feeling of thankfulness.(所以,说英语的人倾向于把表达感激之情和感激之情本身conflate,这是合乎逻辑的)”以及下一句“If somebody didn’t say ‘thanks,’ we often think, they must not have been very grateful.(如果有人没有说‘谢谢’,我们常常会认为,他们一定不是很感激)”可知,说英语的人常把说“谢谢”这种表达感激的方式和内心真正的感激之情弄混了。
根据第三段第二句“The findings suggest the universal way in which thankfulness is expressed is not through giving thanks, but rather through participation in a social agreement in which mutual (相互的) assistance and working together are the norm.(研究结果表明,表达感激之情的普遍方式不是通过说谢谢,而是通过参与一种社会约定,在这种约定中,相互帮助和合作是常态)”可知,普遍表达感激的方式是通过相互帮助和合作。
根据第四段第二句“In India, for example, people-especially when they are your elders, relatives, or close friends-tend to feel that by thanking them, you’re weakening your closeness with them and creating formality and distance that shouldn’t exist!(例如,在印度,人们 —— 尤其是当他们是你的长辈、亲戚或亲密朋友时 —— 往往会觉得,感谢他们会削弱你与他们的亲密关系,并制造出本不该存在的正式感和距离感!)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Nick Enfield, lead researcher of the study, suggests that most of the 6,000 to 7,000 world languages don’t have a word for ‘thank you.’ ‘When we consider the negative effects of thanking close relations alongside the fact that many languages are spoken in very small communities where speakers are likely to know each other, that claim starts to feel quite reasonable.’(这项研究的首席研究员尼克・恩菲尔德表示,世界上6000到7000种语言中,大多数都没有‘谢谢’这个词。‘当我们考虑到感谢亲密关系的负面影响,以及许多语言是在非常小的社区中使用的,在这些社区中,说话的人很可能彼此认识这一事实时,这种说法就开始显得相当合理了。’)”可知,尼克・恩菲尔德暗示,很多语言中没有“谢谢”这个词,结合前文提到不同文化中表达感谢的方式不同,可推断出感激之情可能不是通过语言来表达的。故选B。
D
A quiet revolution is happening in autonomous systems, freeing us from the burdens of labor and giving us more control over our lives. A robotaxis can give you a smooth ride to wherever you need to go while a humanoid robot can handle chores at home.
Undoubtedly, instead of spending time driving, or folding laundry, we can engage in intellectual, artistic, and social pursuits that were previously unimaginable. We can learn new languages, develop new skills, or connect more deeply with loved ones. We are close to a future where the freedom to create and explore is no longer limited by the demands of daily life.
However, undeniable convenience as these autonomous systems offer, there’s something special about the tasks they aim to replace. Learning to drive, or even folding laundry is not just chores but the very fabric of our human experience. The first time you got behind the wheel of a car gave you a moment of growth and independence. Folding laundry can be a quiet, reflective moment—a reminder that life is made up of simple rhythms.
Here lies the contradiction: Autonomy isn’t just about freedom from work but control. As we hand over more control to machines, we are losing some of our own.
Take Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, for example. Despite the incredible convenience and safety it offers, we need to reflect on what we might be leaving behind as we move closer to this reality. For many, driving is more than just a means of getting from one destination to another—it’s an experience about freedom and control. The sensory connection to the road, and even the joy of mastering the art of driving are elements that technology might replace, but not necessarily reproduce.
True human autonomy is not just about handing over daily tasks to machines. It’s about the choice to engage in those tasks when we want to. The simple act of driving a car, or cleaning a home is more than just a function; it’s an expression of our humanity. Perhaps that’s the real challenge in front of us as autonomous systems become more integrated into our lives; how to use these machines to enhance our freedom without losing the very expression of our humanity.
12. What do autonomous systems probably enable us to get?
A. Greater abilities to handle chores.
B. Higher intellectual ambitions.
C. More opportunities to develop creativity.
D. A free future of living without limits.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. The value of routine experiences.
B. The freedom through technology.
C. The reflections on personal growth.
D. The room for improving autonomous systems.
14. Why does the author mention “Tesla’s FSD system”?
A. To demonstrate the joy of driving.
B. To argue against the freedom from work.
C. To give an example of technological convenience.
D. To stress the loss of control and human experience.
15. What message does the author mainly convey?
A. Technology serves as a helping hand.
B. Freedom isn’t what technology offers us.
C. The future of autonomous systems is in our hands.
D. There are conflicts between innovation and autonomy.
C 13. A 14. D 15. D
根据第二段“Undoubtedly, instead of spending time driving, or folding laundry, we can engage in intellectual, artistic, and social pursuits that were previously unimaginable. We can learn new languages, develop new skills, or connect more deeply with loved ones. We are close to a future where the freedom to create and explore is no longer limited by the demands of daily life.(毫无疑问,与其花时间开车或叠衣服,我们可以从事以前无法想象的智力、艺术和社交活动。我们可以学习新的语言,发展新的技能,或者与所爱的人建立更深入的联系。我们正在接近这样一个未来:创造和探索的自由不再受到日常生活需求的限制)”可知,自主系统能让我们得到有更多的机会来发展创造力。故选C项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“However, undeniable convenience as these autonomous systems offer, there’s something special about the tasks they aim to replace. Learning to drive, or even folding laundry is not just chores but the very fabric of our human experience. The first time you got behind the wheel of a car gave you a moment of growth and independence. Folding laundry can be a quiet, reflective moment—a reminder that life is made up of simple rhythms.(然而,尽管这些自主系统提供了不可否认的便利,但它们旨在取代的任务有一些特别之处。学开车,甚至叠衣服都不仅仅是家务,而是我们人类经历的基本组成部分。你第一次开车给了你一个成长和独立的时刻。叠衣服可以是一个安静、沉思的时刻——提醒你生活是由简单的节奏组成的)”可知,本段的重点是日常经验的价值。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“Take Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, for example. Despite the incredible convenience and safety it offers, we need to reflect on what we might be leaving behind as we move closer to this reality. For many, driving is more than just a means of getting from one destination to another—it’s an experience about freedom and control. The sensory connection to the road, and even the joy of mastering the art of driving are elements that technology might replace, but not necessarily reproduce.(以特斯拉的全自动驾驶(FSD)系统为例。
根据最后一段“True human autonomy is not just about handing over daily tasks to machines. It’s about the choice to engage in those tasks when we want to. The simple act of driving a car, or cleaning a home is more than just a function; it’s an expression of our humanity. Perhaps that’s the real challenge in front of us as autonomous systems become more integrated into our lives; how to use these machines to enhance our freedom without losing the very expression of our humanity.(真正的人类自主并不仅仅是把日常任务交给机器。
Many of us were told from an early age that, “you learn from your mistakes”. But is this actually true? ____16____ Failure can be a teachable moment. But learning from our mistakes is, in reality, very hard because we don’t like to fail. It doesn’t feel good, so we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task too early, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding fault with the task itself. ____17____ “Most of us want to think of ourselves as capable”, says Hallgeir Sjastad, a professor of psychology and leadership at the Norwegian School of Economics, so when we fail “it poses a serious threat to our self-image”.
Fortunately, there is research to suggest that there are some strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers around failure. ____18____ Instead of asking “Why did I fail?” we could ask “Why did Sam fail?”, for example. Multiple studies by psychologist Ethan Kross at the University of Michigan show that adopting this perspective (视角) helps to soften our negative emotional reactions, allowing us to look at failure more objectively.
____19____ This strategy led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups — involving both adults and children — that were asked to give advice based on their own failures.
The writer Samuel Beckett once said, “Fail again, fail better”. But it now seems that we should be saying: “Fail again, fail smarter”. ____20____ But by learning to overcome the emotional barriers around it, we may find the road to success is a little easier to navigate.
A. The short answer is “yes”.
B. Failure is an unavoidable part of life.
C. This is actually a kind of self-protection.
D. Smart people usually learn from others’ mistakes.
E. One of them is to adopt a third-person perspective.
F. The more mistakes you make, the less progress you’ll make.
G. Another strategy is giving advice to those who have similar experiences with us.
A 17. C 18. E 19. G 20. B
根据上文“Many of us were told from an early age that, “you learn from your mistakes”. But is this actually true?(我们中的许多人从小就被告诉“你会从错误中学习”。但这实际上是正确的吗?)”可知,作者提出了一个问题,即从错误中学习是否真的正确。结合选项,A项“The short answer is “yes”(简短的回答是“是的”。)” 故选A项。
根据上文“It doesn’t feel good, so we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task too early, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding fault with the task itself.(这感觉不好,所以我们以情感的方式对待失败,比如过早放弃任务,告诉自己我们不在乎是否成功,或者找任务本身的毛病)”可知,我们这样做其实是一种自我保护,不想承认自己的失败,结合选项,C项“This is actually a kind of self-protection.(这实际上是一种自我保护)”表达的含义符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Fortunately, there is research to suggest that there are some strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers around failure.(幸运的是,有研究表明有一些策略可以帮助我们克服围绕失败的情感障碍)”可知,上文提到了有一些策略,可推理出接下来会介绍具体的策略。E项“One of them is to adopt a third-person perspective.(其中之一是采用第三人称视角)”引出了第一个策略,符合上下文逻辑。故选E项。
根据上文“adopt a third-person perspective (采用第三人称视角)”以及下文“This strategy led to better levels of motivation and academic success... that were asked to give advice based on their own failures.
But it now seems that we should be saying: “Fail again, fail smarter”(再次失败,更好地失败。但现在看来我们应该说:再次失败,更聪明地失败)”可知,我们需要学会更聪明地面对失败,可推理出此处说的是失败是生活不可避免的一部分, B项“Failure is an unavoidable part of life(失败是生活中不可避免的一部分)”表达的含义符合语境。故选B项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Steven Green was a hardworking man who worked all his life to support his family. He never finished college, so he had to take hard labor jobs around the neighborhood. He worked as a builder and a carpenter through the years. He often helped his neighbors whenever needed. However, as he grew older, he could no longer do these jobs. His knees grew weak, and his health condition made it difficult for him to do difficult jobs.
Steven’s kids didn’t live in the same state as him and could only send him a little money because they also led a poor life. Unfortunately, Steven experienced constant physical pain after doing hard labor jobs for years, and he needed to take medicine every day. The money his kids offered was only enough for food, and his savings were small. Realizing that he needed more money, Steven decided to get a job again. Finally, he found a job as a doorkeeper. At first, his salary was enough to pay for the groceries and the medicine he needed. However, due to his advanced age, he started to need more medicine, and it cost a whole lot.
To pay the growing bills Steven began to take things from his home to a second-hand store to get some money. One day, as he was carrying an old radio to the store, his neighbor, Ben, saw him. “Mr. Green, it’s so good to see you! How have you been?” Ben asked. “I’m doing great. I’m just selling couple of things I no longer use at home for some cash. Being weak is terrible when you’re old, so take care of yourself when you are young, alright?” he said almost jokingly. Ben nodded.
“Thanks for the tip, Mr. Green!” he said before waving goodbye. That same day, Steven was cooking dinner when he heard the doorbell ring. He wasn’t expecting anyone, so he curiously walked towards the door.
Paragraph 1:
Surprisingly, he saw Ben standing there with a jacket in his arms.

Paragraph 2:
“Ben must have forgotten about the check inside the pocket,” Steven thought.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Surprisingly, he saw Ben standing there with a jacket in his arms. “Earlier today, I noticed you weren’t wearing a jacket. It’s getting cold these days, so I want to give you this jacket as a gift,” Ben said, handing Steven the coat. Steven accepted the gift and thanked Ben a lot. The next day, Steven wore the jacket to work. Feeling cold, he put his hands inside the pockets. Then he found there was something inside. To his surprise, it was a check for $ 200!
“Ben must have forgotten about the check inside the pocket,” Steven thought. He then went to Ben’s house. “I believe this is yours,” Steven said, showing Ben the check. But Ben shook his head and said the check was Steven’s. Seeing Steven’s confused face, Ben explained Steven had helped his mom a lot and that he had never had a chance to repay Steven’s kindness before. Therefore, when he realized Steven needed help, he decided to reach out. Hearing those words, Steven was so touched that he hugged Ben tightly.

A. To prepare for the role.
B. To treat his own illnesses.
C. To become a practicing physician.
D. To appreciate TCM’s philosophy.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning acupuncture?
A. To explain the diverse changes in future careers.
B. To demonstrate TCM’s international recognition.
C. To show the drama’s popularity among younger viewers.
D. To emphasize TCM’s advantages over Western medicine.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Traditional Approach to TCM
B. A New Vision for TCM’s Future
C. Exploring the Ancient Roots of TCM
D. Redefining TCM for a Global Audience

A quiet revolution is happening in autonomous systems freeing us from the burdens of labor and giving us more control over our lives.

A. The value of routine experiences.
B. The freedom through technology.

To pay the growing bills, Steven began to take things from his home to a second-hand store to get some money.
