I decided at 10 that I was going to be a teacher because I had a burning desire for super powers. As a boy, I could clearly see some of my teachers had such powers.
There was an English teacher in fifth grade who could magically take us to different worlds every day by telling us stories and reading to us from books we would otherwise never pick up. This was our secret and fun time because fifth graders were considered too old to have stories read out to them.
It was even shocking that my teacher could see the hidden. I was one of those who had no insight, yet my teacher would notice me and the unspoken message in her eyes suggested that she could see me through. She had another super power and even after forty years, I could still remember her lessons about the great masters of art and great geographers. She did this even though her major (专业) was neither art nor geography. Her lessons went beyond the textbook. I knew I wanted to be one of those all-seeing ones with super powers that made children feel safe and valued.
I know being a teacher isn’t the easiest or the most financially rewarding (经济回报) of jobs. And there are job risks — your knees can become worn out from years of carrying piles of notebooks up and down the school steps, and your voice can suffer from too much talking. Even so, there are still those choosing this job. To them, teaching is not just a job, but a science, an art and it requires lots of effort.
All my life, for thirty years now, I’ve gone to work early each day with a spring in my step. Sometimes, I meet my former students. Their love for me and sweet memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who thirst for super powers, like a new teacher trying to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a lonely, village school travelling 70 kilometers each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group.

45. What do we know about the author as a teacher?
A. He suffered a lot in his knees and voice.

Students who learn languages often think they have memory (记忆) problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact the problem is usually with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized (有条理的). When you put away a book or memory, you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary (词汇)? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences with this word. Even better, make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meanings of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
46. In the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because ________.
A. they have memory problems B. they are too worried
C. they don’t use a proper way D. they don’t like to study
47. Which is TRUE about memory according to the passage?
A. Short-term memory is seldom used.
B. What we see goes into long-term memory first.
C. We’ll forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.
D. We’ll never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.
48. According to the passage, what can help us find a word in our long-term memory more easily?
A. Just reading the word.
B. Putting the word in short-term memory.
C. Connecting (联系) the word with other words we already know.
D. Using activities to make the word’s meaning stronger in long-term memory.
49. Which of the following is an example of “thinking about the word in new ways” mentioned in the passage?
A. Learning some grammar.
B. Making a list of words with similar meanings.
C. Using the word to write a short story.
D. Looking up the word in a dictionary.
50. This passage mainly tells us about ________.
A. students’ problems in language study
B. how to make the meanings of words stronger
C. short-term and long-term memory
D. how to improve ways to remember words
D
Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument (争吵)? Have your once warm conversations become cold? You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
Teenagers’ physical (身体的) changes may cause such family problems. You may feel worried that you are developing at a different speed to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice and weight problems. When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first you want to get angry with.
It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental (精神的) needs too. You enter a strange middle ground — no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You hate to depend on your parents but have a continued need for their love and support. You feel ready to make decisions on your own. Unluckily, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. On the other hand, when you are trying to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient — sometimes they forget that growing up is a hard time. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can cause a breakdown in your relationship.
______ The key to keeping the peace is regular (有规律的) and honest communication. When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. Explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and make them free from worries. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will learn when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.
Just remember that it is common to fight with the stress and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy time will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for your future.
51. The writer asked two questions in paragraph 1 to ______.

53. Which of the following can be the best to fill in ______ in paragraph 4?
A. So it’s difficult to get along well with your parents.
B. However, you can take action to improve the situation.
C. But how could this happen?
D. But when can this come to an end?
54. The purpose of the passage is mainly ______.
A. to encourage teenagers to get through a difficult time
B. to describe family problems between teenagers and parents
C. to introduce some ways to solve the family problems

41. The author made up his mind to be a teacher because ________.

A. were told in a magic way

45. What do we know about the author as a teacher?
A. He suffered a lot in his knees and voice.

Students who learn languages often think they have memory (记忆) problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem is usually with how they study.

Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument (争吵)? Have your once warm conversations become cold? You are not alone Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
