While college graduation often marks the end of a long adventure, it was just the beginning for recent college graduates Sarah Harper and Sarah Brightfield. Ten days after Harper graduated in May 2023, the couple began a 463-day journey throughout all 50 states and eight Canadian provinces with their yellow camper van (野营车), Peace Blossom.
Brightfield began dreaming of vanlife in 2019 during her first road trip in a rented camper van. Harper, on the other hand, had never been camping before. Harper had an interest in travel and adventure but never expected that would come in the form of a camper van.
The couple first took short trips, starting with a week-long road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in August 2020. After this, they gradually increased the length of time of their road trips, visiting iconic national parks in places like Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona for two to three weeks at a time. Ultimately, they decided to set out on the trip of a lifetime following Harper’s graduation. They hit the road with clothes for all seasons and no expectations.
The trip literally started with a bang, as Peace Blossom’s brake lines went out while the two were leaving Kansas City at the trip’s start. To make matters worse, the two decided to ride their bikes around town while waiting on the van repairs, but the bikes were stolen after Brightfield and Harper parked them in a friend’s driveway when they went inside to change clothes.
Luckily, they received much help on the rest of their trip. Strangers offered them places to stay, do laundry and take showers. In Arizona, a man named Dusty pulled them out of a sand dune (沙丘). During the trip, they witnessed social justice hi story at the Emmett Till Memorial in Mississippi. They also saw the real-life effects of climate change in the midst of intense wildfires in Washington State. Brightfield, who studied civil engineering and water quality in college, was fascinated to see issues related to water resources on the road.
24. What do we know about the couple before they started their trip of a lifetime?
A. They got prepared for the trip.
B. They preferred short trips to long ones.
C. They had dreamed of vanlife since little.
D. They had visited iconic national parks in 50 states.
25. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The eventful start of the journey. B. The carelessness of the couple.
C. The terrible public security in Kansas. D. The potential dangers in the journey.
26. Why does the author mention Dusty in the last paragraph?
A. To show the challenges the couple faced.
B. To stress the important role strangers played.
C. To illustrate the kindness the couple received.
D. To compare the people in Arizona to those in Kansas.
27. Which of the following best describes the couple’s trip of a lifetime?
A. Comfortable. B. Romantic. C. Educational. D. Humbling.
C
Although the question of whether there is a gender difference in math seems like a simple one, the answer is complex. Overall there are only small differences in boys’ and girls’ math performance; those differences depend on the age and skill level of the student, and what type of math they are attempting.
In elementary school, boys and girls generally perform similarly on math tests. Later in school, in high school and college, more consistent differences start to emerge. In addition, gender differences are often larger among higher-performing students but not necessarily for lower- or average-performing ones. Within this specific group of higher-performing math students, boys tend to perform better. Similarly, when studies do find gender differences among elementary school children, they find these start to appear for higher-performing students earlier in schooling than they do for lower- and average-performing ones.
Whether a gender difference is found also depends on what type of math the kids are doing. In general, boys tend to outperform girls on tests that are less related to what is taught in schools while there tend to be negligible gender differences on statewide standards-based math tests, which are more tied to what’s taught in schools. When it comes to grades in school, which are even more closely tied to the curriculum, girls often outperform boys. A recent meta-analysis of research on the performance of students from elementary age through adulthood found boys tend to outperform girls in more complex areas of math. In contrast, there are no differences on more basic numerical skills and on math problems that have a set procedure for solving them.
Interestingly, we often see larger gender difference in other math-related outcomes compared with overall performance. Girls tend to have less positive math attitudes: They have higher levels of math anxiety and lower levels of confidence in their math skills. This means even when girls show similar performance levels to boys, they are often less sure of themselves. This may help us understand why boys go on to pursue math-intensive career choices more frequently than girls do.
28. According to paragraph 2, which is a crucial factor in gender differences in math?
A The difficulty of math tests.
B. The skill level of the students.
C. The age when math learning begins.
D. The math performance in elementary school.
29. What does the underlined word “negligible” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Obvious. B. Consistent. C. Unstable. D. Insignificant.
30. Why are girls less likely to seek math-intensive careers than boys?
A. They dislike math-related careers.
B. Their math performance is unsatisfying.
C. They feel unqualified for math-intensive careers.
D Their opportunities in math-intensive careers are limited.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Do Gender Differences Matter? B. The Complexity of Math Education.
C. Are Boys Better Than Girls at Math? D. Factors Affecting Math Performance.
D
Montana First Nation is located in what was once rich oil and gas country in central Alberta. But as the oil wells began to dry up, the small community was faced with the enormous challenge of finding new employment for many of their members who landed out of work.
That’s when the idea of solar energy came up. The Nation partnered with Enmax Energy Corporation to install (安装) a 100 kW system of solar panels on the roof of their band office, which immediately cut their power bill by 60%. From this first success, Montana First Nation decided to invest further. They founded Green Arrow Corporation Akamihk, the first Indigenous (本土的)-owned and operated community solar energy company in western Canada.
Vickie Wetchie, Montana First Nation member and general manager of Green Arrow, describes the benefits that the community has experienced since they launched their solar company in 2012. The economic benefits — through local employment, community income, and power savings — have been the primary motivators for pursuing this energy development. In addition, it provides opportunities in a new, decentralized energy sector, allowing people to work within the community rather than having to travel far and live away from home. Wetchie emphasizes the pride that this has created in the community across generations — from kids learning about solar in school, to adults being skilled in a new industry, to elders having panels on their houses.
Renewable (可恢复的) energy projects such as Green Arrow are also in line with Indigenous traditional values and lifestyle. First Nations have worldviews which are centered on concepts of interconnectedness and balance between all living beings. The rich land-based knowledge and practices resulting from this worldview have allowed Indigenous peoples to live on these lands for thousands of years, continuously adapting to social and ecological changes.
“Going back to renewables, going back to low-impact. And thinking that way, ‘scientifically,’ but not really, because that’s just how we were already,” Wetchie explains. “In many respects, harvesting renewable energy is something that First Nations peoples have been doing for generations, and combining these traditional ways of living with new technologies for low-impact energy generation is appealing to many.”
32. Why did Montana First Nation turn to solar energy?
A. To cut the power bill. B. To preserve the oil wells.
C. To attract workers across Alberta. D. To deal with the high unemployment.
33. What benefit has the solar company brought to the community?
A. A boost to the local economy.
B. Job opportunities away from home.
C. An improvement in local education.
D. Closer relationships among generations.
34. What do we know about Indigenous peoples?
A. They live a sustainable life. B. They lead a modern lifestyle.
C. They value strong family bonds. D. They support social and ecological changes.
35. What does Wetchie think of renewable energy projects?
A. They have little scientific basis.
B. They are a successful innovation.
C. They have little impact on the environment,
D. They are a combination of the old and the new.

I always add the page number in case I need to find my way back for context.

Ethan had always been excited for high school. In middle school, he’d heard stories from older kids about the freedom, the clubs, and the chance to reinvent oneself. But when he actually stepped into his new school, he felt smaller than ever. His classes were larger, his teachers more demanding, and the coursework harder.
At first Ethan thought he could keep his head down and get through easily like he had in middle school. But after a few weeks, he realized it wasn’t that simple. His old friends from middle school were in different classes, and even when he tried to sit with some of them at lunch, there was a distance now. It wasn’t anyone’s fault; they just didn’t seem to click like they used to. Most of them had found new groups of friends, and Ethan was left in the middle of it all, unsure where to belong.
The problem reached a boiling point during the first pep rally (动员会) of the year. Ethan had agreed to go with his older cousin, Max, who was a senior and a big deal on the football team. Ethan had hoped it would be fun, a way to feel more connected to the school. But as the crowd cheered and the band played, Ethan felt completely out of place. He didn’t know anyone, didn’t understand the chants, and felt like an outsider in a sea of school spirit.
After the rally, Max noticed Ethan’s frustration and comforted him, “You don’t have to try to fit in if it doesn’t feel right. But you have to be yourself, and sometimes that’s the hardest part.”
Ethan took Max’s words to heart, but he still wasn’t sure what to do. The next day, Ethan saw the recruitment (招募) notice for the chess club on the school bulletin board. Ethan had always loved playing chess with his dad, and he was really good at it. But he never considered it something he could share with other people.
Paragraph 1:
Ethan hesitated, but then decided to check it out.

Paragraph 2:
Over the next few weeks, Ethan spent more time in the club.

W: Exactly! Plus, the subway’s cheaper than gas in the long run. And the trains leave every 15 minutes, so if I miss one I don’t have to wait long for another. So, did you say we should get off at Scott Street?

D. Humbling.
A 25. A 26. C 27. C
根据文章第三段内容“The couple first took short trips, starting with a week-long road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in August 2020. After this, they gradually increased the length of time of their road trips, visiting iconic national parks in places like Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona for two to three weeks at a time. Ultimately, they decided to set out on the trip of a lifetime following Harper’s graduation. They hit the road with clothes for all seasons and no expectations.(这两个人起初先进行短途旅行,2020年8月,她们从为期一周的密歇根上半岛自驾游开始。此后,他们逐渐延长了自驾游的时间,每次花两到三周的时间,游览了犹他州、怀俄明州、科罗拉多州和亚利桑那州等地具有标志性的国家公园。最终,她们决定在哈珀(Harper)毕业后开启这场一生难忘的旅行。她们带着四季衣物上路,没有设定任何预期。)”可知,姐妹俩在正式开启她们一生难忘的房车之旅之前,做好了充足的准备,故选A。
【25题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The trip literally started with a bang, as Peace Blossom’s brake lines went out while the two were leaving Kansas City at the trip’s start. To make matters worse, the two decided to ride their bikes around town while waiting on the van repairs, but the bikes were stolen after Brightfield and Harper parked them in a friend’s driveway when they went inside to change clothes.(这次旅行可谓出师不利,旅程伊始,当两人准备离开堪萨斯城时,“和平之花”(Peace Blossom,此处应指他们所乘的车辆名字)的刹车油管就出了故障。更糟的是,在等待面包车维修期间,两人决定骑车在城里转转,结果当Brightfield和Harper进屋换衣服、把自行车停在朋友家车道上时,自行车却被偷了。)”可知,本段主要讲述了旅程开始时的种种意外,包括房车刹车失灵和自行车被盗等,故选A。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Luckily, they received much help on the rest of their trip. Strangers offered them places to stay, do laundry and take showers. In Arizona, a man named Dusty pulled them out of a sand dune (沙丘).(幸运的是,他们在接下来的旅途中得到了许多帮助。陌生人主动为他们提供住宿、洗衣和洗澡的地方。在亚利桑那州,一位名叫Dusty的男子将她们从沙丘中解救了出来。)”可知,作者在最后一段提到Dusty的目的是说明这两个人受到的善意。故选C。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。从最后一段“During the trip, they witnessed social justice hi story at the Emmett Till Memorial in Mississippi. They also saw the real-life effects of climate change in the midst of intense wildfires in Washington State. Brightfield, who studied civil engineering and water quality in college, was fascinated to see issues related to water resources on the road.(在旅途中,她们在密西西比州的Emmett Till纪念馆见证了社会正义的历史。她们还在华盛顿州猛烈野火肆虐期间,目睹了气候变化带来的现实影响。Brightfield大学时主修土木工程和水质研究,旅途中看到与水资源相关的问题时,她深感着迷。)”可知,她们在旅途中的见闻就好似课堂所学照进了现实,是充满了教育意义的亲身体验,故选C。
A. The difficulty of math tests.
B. The skill level of the students.
C The age when math learning begins.
D. Their opportunities in math-intensive careers are limited.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Do Gender Differences Matter? B. The Complexity of Math Education.
C. Are Boys Better Than Girls at Math? D. Factors Affecting Math Performance.
B 29. D 30. C 31. C
根据第二段“In addition, gender differences are often larger among higher-performing students but not necessarily for lower- or average-performing ones. Within this specific group of higher-performing math students, boys tend to perform better.( 此外,性别差异在成绩优异的学生群体中往往更为显著,但在成绩较差或中等的学生中,这种差异并不一定更大。而在这一特定的数学成绩优异群体内部,男生的表现往往更出色。)”可知,学生的技能水平是数学性别差异的关键因素。故选B。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“In general, boys tend to outperform girls on tests that are less related to what is taught in schools while there tend to be negligible gender differences on statewide standards-based math tests, which are more tied to what’s taught in schools.(一般来说,男孩在不太与学校教学内容相关的测试中往往比女孩表现更好,而在与学校教学内容更相关的全州标准化数学测试中,性别差异往往_____。)”
根据最后一段“Girls tend to have less positive math attitudes: They have higher levels of math anxiety and lower levels of confidence in their math skills. This means even when girls show similar performance levels to boys, they are often less sure of themselves. This may help us understand why boys go on to pursue math-intensive career choices more frequently than girls do.(女孩往往对数学态度不太积极:她们的数学焦虑程度更高,对数学技能的信心更低。这意味着即使女孩的表现与男孩相似,她们也往往对自己不太自信。这可能有助于我们理解为什么男孩比女孩更频繁地追求数学密集型职业选择。)”可知,女孩比男孩更不可能寻求数学密集型职业是因为她们觉得自己不适合数学密集型职业。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Although the question of whether there is a gender difference in math seems like a simple one, the answer is complex.(尽管数学上是否存在性别差异这个问题看起来很简单,但答案却很复杂。)”
D 33. A 34. A 35. D

You’ve probably heard that you need active reading strategies in order to understand and remember more. On this page, we’re going to cover the best active reading techniques.
Take notes using index cards (索引卡). It involves capturing individual ideas on individual cards. To keep things simple, I first decide on how many notes I will take from each chapter. ____36____ Each card after that will feature a quote, key point or my own observations. I always add the page number in case I need to find my way back for context.
Question everything while reading. ____37____ For example, they’ll tell you how to stop subvocalizing (默读), yet at the same time instruct that you should ask questions while reading. How exactly is this possible? I’m not sure, but I can tell you that I ask questions all the time and vocalize on purpose. In fact, to make reading extra-active, you can adopt the voice of particular people in your mind. ____38____
Pause on new or difficult vocabulary. Among the many bad pieces of advice given in the speed reading community, reading without stopping is among the worst. ____39____ That way, you won’t be slowed down in the future. You’ll just know what more words mean. Here’s a simple routine you can follow when you don’t recognize a word while reading: Pause and guess at its meaning. Then write the word down on an index card for vocabulary. Note down the page number and come back to it later. ____40____ It interrupts the routine I just shared and might also open you to all kinds of digital distractions
A. The trick is to just get started.

At first, Ethan thought he could keep his head down and get through easily like he had in middle school.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Over the next few weeks, Ethan spent more time in the club.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
Ethan hesitated, but then decided to check it out. With a pounding heart, he entered the chess club room. A group of students were huddled around chessboards. A boy named Leo spotted him and beckoned him over. “Come on in! New to chess?” Ethan managed a shy nod. As they started a game, Ethan’s skills soon shone through. His initial jitters faded as he focused on the board, making smart moves. The others were impressed, and their friendly chatter put him at ease.
Paragraph 2
Over the next few weeks, Ethan spent more time in the club. He grew closer to the members, bonding over their shared love for chess. They organized group study sessions, analyzing classic games. Ethan’s confidence soared. He no longer felt like an outsider at school. Instead, he looked forward to each day, excited to engage in chess related discussions and competitions with his new-found friends.
