Passage 1
Teenagers are known for being full of new ideas. Let’s have a look at these teenage inventions that might change the world.
Banana leaves usually go bad in two or three days. Tenith Hadith, a teenager from India, used UV to make the leaves stay fresh for a year. Tenith thinks that one day the leaves will be used for making plates, cups and other things.
American teenager David Cohen designed a robot which was inspired (启发) by the movement of an earthworm (蚯蚓). It is able to go into really small places where humans or dogs can’t go. It’ll be used to find people after disasters such as fires and earthquakes.
Remya Jose, a 14-year-old girl from India, found it tiring and boring to handwash clothes in the nearby river. She reused some bicycle parts to create a washing machine that saves time, energy and helps people keep fit at the same time.
Kenneth Shinozuku, a 15-year-old boy from New York, noticed that his grandfather who got Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆) would often leave home and get lost. So he invented the wearable sensors (感应器) to help people find their family members like his grandfather.

Passage 4
Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea?
Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind.
Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander (走神). Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.
Daydreams allow your mind to run freely and even increase productivity in some cases. Daydreaming develops creativity which is why you have an ah-ha moment and sudden insight about a situation. Daydreaming allows you to uncover thoughts and ideas you did not realize you even had and get the thoughts hidden under the surface.
Researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, found an association (联系) between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes making participants (参与者) first do an “unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.
Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again; complete a difficult task, complete an easy task, take a 12-minute break, or skip (跳过) a 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.
Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.
But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought” . Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle(不易察觉的) way.
When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not.
Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.
Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.
1.The “unusual-use task” included having participants ________.
A.complete a very simple task B.achieve a very difficult task
C.have a break for 12 minutes D.find various uses for an object
2.Those who completed the easy task performed best because ________.
A.they worked harder on the easy task
B.they saved time for the following task
C.they chose to stay away from the difficult task

D.problem-solving skills are important in our lives
Passage 5
AI is shaking up the world now. It has been widely used in many different fields.
Chatbots (聊天机器人), a kind of AI-driven tool, have become a necessary part of modern communication. They can understand and reply to users at once. Whether it’s on websites or mobile apps, chatbots can offer support in real time. Besides, AI users can control smart home tools through voice orders. AI is reshaping (重塑) the way we communicate in our daily lives.
AI makes a big difference to traffic. For example, some ride-sharing platforms (拼车平台) depend heavily on AI. They use AI to match passengers with drivers and provide better transportation services. And self-driving cars are a main example of AI’s use in transportation, too. With the help of AI, they can reduce accidents and help those unable to drive.
AI provides a smart way to education. It changes the way teachers teach and students learn. AI in classrooms can make teaching and learning more interesting, which helps students focus more on their studies. AI can also offer students support outside classrooms. For example, it can help with homework, answer questions, and provide explanations. By analyzing (分析) students’ advantages, weaknesses and learning needs, AI can make suitable study plans for them. This can help students achieve their learning goals more easily.
All in all, AI is shaping and will continue to shape our everyday experiences.

Passage 6
Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not? To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to sort (分类) the waste. The students named the bin Waste Collection Point.
Connected to a computer, the bin uses a camera to tell the kind of the waste it receives and sorts it into plastic, paper, glass, or other kinds. To make sure the bin can sort waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took at least 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy,” said one of the students who built the AI system.
The idea of the smart bin was born 3 years ago, when the students were in Grade Ten. At that time, people from the city crowded into their village because of the COVID-19. They left behind a lot of rubbish and caused more pollution.
“All the bins were full, and there was even rubbish on the mountain,” the students recalled, “Every weekend, we had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.”
The students decided to develop a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although school ended at 2 pm, the team would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 pm at school. Even when their school was closed last year, they would still meet and work together online.
“Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope it can be widely used in the city,” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle and protect our environment.”

Passage 1
Last year, a famous director said that people should visit cinemas instead of just watching movies through 3-minute short videos. Do you agree with him?
People watch movies to feel the emotions. This makes people want to discuss movies deeply. However, short videos don’t let us feel these emotions, so we miss the great experience of watching a full movie. Also, short videos might have mistakes. Watching movies from the beginning to the end is better.
Shao Xinyan, 13, Hubei
Short videos help us know the true meaning of the movie and make it more convenient to get information. If someone doesn’t have time to watch a full movie or finds it boring, short videos help save time and money. In this case, short videos help people enjoy movies and save their energy.
Cui Luoyao, 14, Beijing
Great movies have special details that can’t be shown in a few minutes. Also, everyone has different opinions on movies. Some may believe a movie is a must-see, but others may say it is bad. If we just follow what short video makers say, we may miss some great movies. We should watch the movies ourselves to make our own judgement.
Wang Jiayi, 15, Shandong
Short movie videos can tell us the major parts of a movie that interest you, which helps you forget about worries in your busy life for a while. Also, different video makers tell a movie story in their own ways. By listening to these different takes on the story, we can get a better understanding of the movies.

Passage 1
The bell rang, and I rushed to the library for Writing Club. Miss Lisa, our leader, announced that we would share our stories with a critique partner. I knew the meaning of “critique” — giving helpful feedback. My partner was Penny. I handed her my story, nervous about my spelling and grammar. Penny seemed worried, too, as she gave me her story. I read it and was amazed—it was a heartwarming tale about a stray dog named Sunny who saved a family from a flood.
“Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions. It’s perfect!”
“Yours too,” she said quietly in an unclear way. She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back.
“OK, everyone, our time is up for today,” said Miss Lisa. “See you next week!”
Penny looked relieved. She jumped up and caught her backpack and hurried out of the library. I noticed a book under the table. It must have fallen out of Penny’s bag. The title was Sunny the Brave.
I read the description on the back: In this heartwarming tale, a dog named Sunny finds a home after saving a family from a devastating flood.
That sounded to be heard. It was just like Penny’s story! It was longer, with some different words, but the scenes were exactly the same. I couldn’t believe it. Penny had copied this idea!
Outside of the school, I noticed Penny sitting on a bench. I walked over.
Penny’s shoulders were slumped. She was crying!
All of a sudden, I wasn’t angry any more. I remembered that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. But what should I say?
“I thought I would love writing club, but I’m terrible at it,” she said. “I never have a single idea for a story.”
“What if we worked on a story together?”
“Well, I have ideas, but my sentences aren’t always the best. I wish I could write perfectly like you do,” I said.
“I’d rather have ideas than write perfect sentences,” Penny said.
“I did have one new idea,” I said. “What if we worked on a story together? I bet we could come up with something great.”
“Can we do that?” she asked. She looked hopeful.
“Let’s talk to Miss Lisa,” I said. “She loves it when writers are creative.”
“Maybe we can write about two friends,” she said. “And one has a big problem.”
“And they work together to solve it,” I added.
“And everything ends up better than they could have imagined,” she said.
“Now that’s a great idea!” I said.
1.What does the underlined word “relieved” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Nervous. B.Relaxed C.Confident. D.Worried.
2.Why wasn’t I angry any more when seeing Penny was crying?
A.Because I wanted to talk to Miss Lisa.
B.Because I was afraid of the dog Sunny.
C.Because I was worried about Penny’s writing.
D.Because I wanted to give her helpful feedback.
3.What is the best title for this story?
A.A Perfect Story B.Sunny the Brave
C.Writing Club Activities D.The Power of Friendship
Passage 2
Mom and Dad are two of the most important people in your life. Over your lifetime, they may influence (影响) you more than anyone else you meet. If your mom loves to read, you just might grow up carrying a book wherever you go, just as she does. But parents do a lot more than just pass on their hobbies. Moms and Dads need to care for their kids from the minute their kids are born. Most parents will do this as long as they live.
Here are some ways you can stay close, get along well, and build a strong relationship with your parents.
Spend time together. Instead of playing computer games or watching TV by yourself, ask your mom and dad to play with you. Go outside together, or do some reading together.
Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom or dad. You can brighten a parent’s day with a hug (拥抱) a card, or a joke. It’s also lovely when a kid cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents will be so happy.
Do your best at whatever you do. You don’t have to be perfect, but when you do your best, you make your parents proud. It makes them happy to see how you’re turning into a great kid. Why? Because it lets them know they’re doing a good job.
1.Which of the following can’t help you build a strong relationship with your parents?
A.Spending time together. B.Being kind.
C.Doing your best at whatever you do. D.Playing computer games or watching TV alone.

Passage 3
Tom always lived for grades. He was always interested in books and ideas. Why should he care about people? They only made fun of him. They were jealous (妒忌的) because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Tom knew everything—except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.
He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with special teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest person to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors (教授) to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Tom opened the door, there was his idol—Professor Rosen. Tom was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time, exchanging ideas. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”

Passage 5
“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that.” says Zhang Hua, a middle school student in Guangzhou. Do you have the same problem? Why do children think parents are unfriendly?
One of the biggest things is that when someone is a parent, he or she likes worrying. They worry about everything about you from the time you were born. They worry about the friends you make, the food you eat, how much sleep you get. All these things are parts of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Call them when you have to stay somewhere else late. Take responsibility (责任) for what you have done. Talk about your ideas with them.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need your help.

Passage 6
Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents. However, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

Passage 6
①How do you deal with your baby teeth? Different cultures follow their own special customs when a child’s baby teeth fall out.
②After a child loses his baby tooth in Greece, he makes a wish for a strong and healthy adult tooth while throwing his broken baby tooth onto the roof (屋顶). He tries to throw the tooth as straight as possible, hoping that a straight strong tooth will grow in its place. Children in China and Singapore also follow the same practice.
③But this isn’t the only way the fallen tooth is treated around the world. In parts of Africa, children throw lost upper (上面的) teeth on the roof and bury (埋) lost lower teeth in the ground. But in East Asia, it’s the opposite: lower teeth go on the roof and upper teeth are buried or hidden under the bed. In some mid-eastern countries such as Iraq and Egypt, kids are encouraged to throw their teeth up towards the sky.
④But do you know one of the most common ways to deal with it? Kids give the tooth to a mouse to make the adult tooth as strong as the mouse’s. They usually make a wish or sing a song during the ceremony. This happens in many places like Mexico, Russia, and New Zealand.
⑤In fact, kids in Argentina leave their tooth in a glass for a magical mouse who will bring a treasure while they sleep. In France and Switzerland, there’s a La Petit Souris (little mouse) that takes the thrown-away baby teeth for money or candy. In South Africa, the tooth is left in a slipper for the “tooth mouse”, who leaves a gift behind. How interesting it is!
⑥This is not all. In some places, the tooth is often kept at home and in some others, it is just thrown away. In modern times, parents are also storing their children’s baby teeth to keep stem cells (干细胞) for some medical research later in life.

Mei’s hands shook as she held it. She remembered seeing this camera in old photos—her grandfather had been a famous photographer (摄影师) in Beijing before moving to Canada.
Suddenly, she heard a voice. “Mei! What are you doing?” Mei turned and dropped the camera. Lina stood in the doorway, her face pale. She held the door so hard that her fingers turned white.
“Mom, I…” Mei tried to explain, but the words stuck in her throat. “Why did you hide this? Grandpa was a photographer You always said he sold electronics.”
Lina’s voice turned cold. “He left our family for his art. Your grandma worked two jobs while he took photos of storms. Photography isn’t a real job.”
She quickly put the camera back and closed the box. “You should try your best to become a doctor, not wasting time on hobbies.”
Mei felt tears in her eyes. “But Dad supports my photography He says…”

“Mei? What…” Lina looked at the camera, then softened.
Mei handed her the photo. It showed Lina with messy hair, but her face looked peaceful in the dark light. “You look happy here,” Mei said. “Not like working at the hospital.”
She knelt beside Lina. “Mom, I’ll study hard. But can I also learn photography? Grandpa’s camera…it connects us. Let me show you my world through it.” Lina was silent for a long time. The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. They will correct you when you’ re wrong, and though they may not be perfect, they at least will always care about you, and can not do anything bad to hurt you.

A soft voice said, “Information.” I cried about my finger, and she told me to put ice on it. After that, I called her for everything—help with geography, or homework, and even what my small pet ate.
When our pet bird Petey died, I called her in tears. “Why do birds sing so beautifully and make everyone happy, only to die with their feet up at the bottom of a cage (笼子)?” I asked. She said softly, “Paul, remember there are other worlds to sing in.” Those words made me feel better. At age 9, we moved to Boston. I missed the old phone and never forgot her. Years later, when my plane stopped in Seattle, I called the operator (接线员) in my hometown for “Information Please”. To my surprise, Sally’s voice answered! I asked her to spell “fix”, just like when I was little. She laughed and told me my calls made her day—as she had no kids, she’d looked forward to talking with me.
Three months later, when I called again, a different voice said Sally had died of illness. She left a message: “Tell Paul I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll understand.”

Army cadet adventures
A UK teenager shares his story of going through military training
穿上迷彩扛起枪,英国少年感受部队生活
The cadet force (学员部队) in the UK has a strong presence among the teenage population. It includes several organizations (机构) that provide military (军事的) training for young people.
I am a British Army cadet. We go on many trips, my favorite being Annual Camp where we spend a week at an army base (基地). I love it because it’s very fun to see actual soldiers (士兵) on the base, and it has added a lot to my experiences. For example, I went up the ranks (级别) beginning as a Junior 1 Star and ending up as a senior in just a week thanks to the camp!
I felt very excited before it began because I couldn’t wait to carry my rifle (步枪)! It began with three days in the field, wearing a full camo uniform (迷彩服), with green face paint, and carrying my rifle everywhere while being ordered around and shouted at all day. Many kids found it challenging when being shouted at, but I didn’t mind it because it made it easier to get the job done. After that, I spent two days doing exciting training. There was a fun time I loved when I went kayaking (划皮划艇) and ripped (撕破) my pants and everyone found it funny. I also went to Detachment, a place where we did normal cadet training and learned about the Army Cadet Force.
In the future, I plan to get the Duke of Edinburgh’s award which is a task teenagers can do for their resumes (简历). It includes things like physical activity and volunteering work to complete it. This is useful to do with the cadets as it’s much cheaper than with schools. The Army Cadet Force is a strong and respectful community that teaches young adults useful life lessons.

D.they came up with more ideas while daydreaming

A.wander in a subtle way under your control
B.know clearly what you’re thinking and doing
C.think about a problem without even knowing it
D.stop processing information from the outside world

话题2 电影和戏剧

Many loved the movie so much that they could hardly wait to see the third one in the series. “Don’t make me wait another five years!” they said online. One exciting scene follows another. They keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
The story is also about the characters. “Each character has their own story,” Jiaozi explained. He doesn’t like the idea of thinking in black and white. The most touching character is Shen Gongbao. What else in the movie has left a deep impression (印象) on you? The message goes a step further: “Everyone has the chance to become great.”
Director Jiaozi said, “I don’t want to make quick money from it.” He has stayed true to himself and put his best effort into his work. But “staying true” doesn’t mean changing nothing. New creations can have fresh ideas without losing the best part of the series. For example, in the first movie, Ne Zha shouted, “I’m the master of my own fate (命运)!”

话题3 解决争论
D.Worried.

The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew. “Tom, tell me about your friends. What do you do for fun?” the professor wanted to know.
There was silence as Tom realised that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies,” he said.
“That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are ... a boy. Boys need to have fun.”
The professor talked a bit more and then said, “I have to go, but I have a test for you. In this box, there are three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”

1.To draw readers’ attention, the writer started the passage by ________.

Passage 1
Macie Semrau, a 6-year-old girl from Eliot, Maine, seldom missed school. So, when she refused to even get dressed one day, her mother decided to allow her to stay home with her father Kyle and her 4-year-old brother Caleb. The family would later be very thankful that the little girl refused to leave after she found her father passed out (昏倒) in the basement.
After returning from his night work, Kyle was feeling light-headed. He told his wife Kate that he would stay with their children for the day. He finally made his way to the basement. Macie paid attention to her father’s condition when she heard him shouting, and she and Caleb went to have a look. Macie found her 37-year-old father was about to lose awareness. She asked him for his phone’s passcode so she could unlock it. After opening his phone, she found the local police department’s number and called the police.
The police were floored by Macie’s decision-making and her ability to stay calm. The little girl listed the family’s address while explaining that her father was in trouble. In the meantime, Caleb comforted his father. Thanks to Macie and Caleb, he was sent to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, where he required four liters of oxygen and spent three days recovering.
“I’m very lucky, because of my daughter and son and the police’s response,” said Kyle. “It was quick,” he added, mentioning that the police arrived just in two minutes thanks to Macie’s call. “It was unbelievable. I was in tears myself,” he said.
The Eliot Police Department also praised the young girl for her quick thinking and strong awareness. Passage 2
Mei stood outside her grandpa’s room. Her mother, Lina, had always told her not to go inside because it was “too dusty.” But today, while Lina was at work, Mei decided to open the door.
Inside, she saw a wooden box with “China 1987” written on it. Mei opened it and found an old Leica camera. It was dusty but looked like it could still work.
“Your father is optimistic. He dreams too much.” Lina stopped. She walked out, leaving Mei alone.
That night, Mei couldn’t sleep. She remembered her grandpa’s words: “Find the light in the dark, mei mei.”
At 2 a.m., she quietly went to the living room. The TV was on, and Lina was asleep on the sofa with a medical book on her leg. Mei took the camera, pointed it at Lina, and pressed the button. The flash woke Lina up.
Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them.
The second kind of friend could also be called “guest friends”. They are not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (害怕), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. They will correct you when you’ re wrong, and though they may not be perfect, they at least will always care about you, and can not do anything bad to hurt you.

Passage 3
Last summer, my friend Dan and I went to the town of Buñol in Spain to take part in La Tomatina. We had a/an ▲ tomato fight there!
The celebrations started a week before the main event. There were food stalls, music, parades (游行) and other activities. But we only joined in the day of the fight.
It was Wednesday, August 28. We arrived in the town at 9 a.m. in old clothes. Everyone was excitedly waiting for the tomato fight to begin. Some brave people tried to climb a greasy pole (涂了油的杆子). If someone could get the ham at the top, the fight would start early. The rest of us watched and sang songs to encourage them. But the pole was so slippery (滑溜溜的) that no one could get more than halfway up.
Finally, the fight started at 11 a.m. Dan and I put on our goggles (护目镜) to protect our eyes. A few huge trucks slowly drove down the streets. People inside the trucks threw tomatoes out toward the crowd. Then, the trucks turned over their boxes and poured all the tomatoes onto the street. We picked them up and threw them here and there.
The next hour was a total mess. Tomatoes were everywhere! They were in the air, in our hair, all around our feet and down our clothes...
The fight went on for an hour. After that, the local workers hosed (用水管冲洗) us down to wash off most of the tomatoes. Dan and I kept laughing and talking about the fight. It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had in my life!

Passage 6
In August 2024, Yao Miao made history as the first Chinese woman to win the OCC (about 50 km) race at the famous UTMB(环勃朗峰超级越野赛). This added to her earlier success in 2018, when she also became the first Chinese woman to win the CCC (about 100 km) race at the UTMB.
The UTMB is one of the world’s most well-known trail running events, taking place every year around the beautiful Mont Blanc, covering parts of France, Italy, and Switzerland. In 2024, Yao completed a 57-km course with a total elevation gain (总爬升高度) of 3,500 meters. “I started off a bit slowly, but after 20 km, I felt stronger, especially on the downhill. It’s all about speed control— knowing when to save energy and when to push hard,” Yao explained.
Yao’s love for running began in her childhood in the countryside of Guizhou. Her school was four kilometers away from home, and she walked to school every day. Growing up in the mountains made her strong. This helped her later when she became a runner. In 2012, the 16-year-old girl was chosen by the local sports school, starting her formal (正式的) training.
In 2019, Yao was chosen to join the Hubei provincial team as a professional marathon runner. She was later accepted into Central China Normal University in 2020. Balancing professional training with her studies, Yao trained in Yunnan and ran about 30 km a day. In her free time, she took online courses. Though she didn’t have much time to explore the school, Yao said, “When I have time, I will fully enjoy it.”$
