A Glance of China’s Wonders Through Foreign Eyes
Alice: The Great Wall — A Proof of Human Creativity
Whenever I, an American history enthusiast, think of China, the first thing that comes to mind is the Great Wall. It’s not just a wall; it’s a symbol of architectural brilliance. Winding over 13,000 miles, it’s a great wonder that has stood the test of time. The view from the wall is breathtaking, with the mountains rolling out beneath you like a vast, ancient sea. It’s a place where you can almost hear the echoes (回响) of history, and it never fails to inspire admiration.
Ben: The Terracotta Army — A Brief Look at Imperial China
From a British historian’s viewpoint, the Terracotta Army (兵马俑) in Xi’an is a wealth of historical understanding. The life-sized soldiers, horses and chariots are an impressive display of the first emperor’s power and thorough attention to detail of ancient Chinese skilled workers. Each figure is unique, with different facial expressions and clothing, offering a window into the magnificence of the Qin Dynasty. It’s a place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Dylan: The Li River — A Painter’s Wonderland
As a French artist, I am fascinated by the graceful beauty of the Li River in Guilin. The river winds through limestone karsts, creating scenery that seems to have been from a Chinese painting. The reflections of the mountains on the calm water’s surface are charming. It’s a place that inspires quietness and creativity, a perfect spot to set up a painting stand and capture the essence (精髓) of China’s natural beauty.
Clara: The Giant Pandas — A Success Story of Protecting Wildlife
From an Australian environmental protector’s standpoint, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a light of hope. The sight of these cute pandas in their semi-wild environments is heartwarming. It’s incredible to see the efforts made to protect and breed (繁殖) these adorable creatures, which are not only a symbol of China but also evidence of global efforts to protect wildlife. It’s a place that reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
21. What do both Alice and Ben want to convey?
A. A sense of wonder and respect for history. B. Admiration for ancient skilled workers
C. A serious concern about the war and peace. D. Regret for the long-lost soldiers.
22. What does Dylan think of the Li River?
A. Its water is shallow enough for a cool bath.
B. Mountains around it are the most attractive
C Its beauty might encourage painters’ inspiration
D. Its popularity comes from ancient poems and paintings.
23. Why does the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding stand for hope?

“I didn’t like the ending,” I said to my favorite college professor. It was my junior year of undergraduate, and I was doing an independent study on Victorian literature. I had just finished reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and I was heartbroken with the ending. Prof. Gracie, with all his patience, asked me to think about it beyond whether I liked it or not. He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn’t have a traditionally positive outcome. Of course, I would have preferred a different ending for Tom and Maggie Tulliver, but the ending they got did make the most sense for them.
This was an aha moment for me, and I never thought about endings the same way again. From then on, if I wanted to read an ending guaranteed to be happy, I’d pick up a love romance. If I wanted an ending I couldn’t guess, I’d pick up a mystery (悬疑小说). One where I kind of knew what was going to happen, historical fiction. Choosing what to read became easier.
But writing the end — that’s hard. It’s hard for writers because endings carry so much weight with readers. You have to balance creating an ending that's unpredictable, but doesn’t seem to come from nowhere, one that fits what’s right for the characters.
That’s why this issue (期) of Writer’s Digest aims to help you figure out how to write the best ending for whatever kind of writing you’re doing. If it’s short stories, Peter Mountford breaks down six techniques you can try to see which one helps you stick the landing. Elizabeth Sims analyzes the final chapters of five great novels to see what key points they include and how you can adapt them for your work.
This issue won’t tell you what your ending should be — that’s up to you and the story you’re telling — but it might provide what you need to get there.

As the global population continues to expand, traditional farming methods are struggling to provide enough food. However, an innovative agricultural company in Compton, Los Angeles, may have the solution. Their revolutionary farming system could transform food production, offering remarkable efficiency and sustainability.
It’s far from the storybook picture of a farm — no mud, no boots, no hens pecking in the yard. Unlike conventional farms, this high-tech facility operates without soil, heavy machinery, or pesticides. Instead, it relies on automation and advanced plant science to maximize output. Using precisely calibrated (符合标准) LED lighting and nutrient delivery systems, the facility produces up to 350 times more yields compared to traditional farms while using just 10% of the water — and it can be replicated (复制) almost anywhere.
The entire process — from planting seeds to packaging produce — is automated. From the moment a worker tips seeds into the sowing machine, robots take over. Nearly 80 plant scientists study best growing conditions for each plant, working with over 100 engineers who translate these findings into hardware and software solutions.
“Plants are really just little software programs,” explains one of the scientists. By studying plant DNA without changing it, scientists can program qualities like growth, flavor, and nutrition. For instance, exposing plants to blue light at specific growth cycles creates leaves with a satisfying crunch at harvest. The same principles can enhance antioxidant levels in vegetables by up to 40%. Since crops never contact soil, pesticides, or human hands, they require no washing — reducing both water waste and contamination risks.
One of the greatest threats to the natural world is habitat loss due to farmland expansion. If successful, farms like this could reduce deforestation while meeting food demands. Yet the high costs — including energy-intensive artificial lighting — may block global adoption, particularly in developing nations where infrastructure is limited.
Could this be the future of agriculture? With its incredible efficiency, minimal environmental impact, and potential for worldwide replication, this high-tech farming model may soon become essential in feeding our growing world — if the challenges of scaling and affordability can be overcome.
32. What is the main feature of the innovative farming system?
A. It demands water-free technology.
B. It gets high yields with little input.
C. It is widely introduced in the world.
D. It mixes old and new farming methods.
33. What is the scientists’ major role in the process of the farming system?
A. They are gene editors. B. They are machine operators.
C. They are system monitors. D. They are plant programmers.
34. What may limit the worldwide spread of this farming system?
A. Low public acceptance. B. Great farmland loss.
C. Poor production facilities. D. High energy demands.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of agriculture?
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. D 35. A

How did you feel on the last day of term? Perhaps you were excited for an upcoming holiday, or grateful because morning lie-ins were now possible. Whatever you felt, you probably weren’t bored. However, as the weeks keep going, boredom may come close to you quietly. ____36____
Then, what benefits can boredom bring? When you feel bored, your brain is simply struggling to find something that matters. If there’s nothing to be found, your mind will begin to “wander” or we can say “daydream”. Scientists have found that daydreaming gives your brain the space to solve problems and work through things that are on your mind. ____37____ You may come up with some wonderful ideas when daydreaming.
Sandi Mann, a senior psychology lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, believes that a slower pace of life and learning to love boredom could not only lead to an explosion of people writing and painting masterpieces but also thinking about “creative solutions” to work problems. “Boredom is one of the most creative forces — there are benefits to doing nothing. Relieve yourself. ____38____ Embrace boredom and your mind will occupy itself,” she says. “You could end up painting or writing a masterpiece.”
____39____ Many people find boredom to be an uncomfortable feeling. That’s OK — with practice, you can learn to “sit with” that feeling and to use it to find fun and meaningful activities to do. ____40____ There’s a difference between feeling bored from time to time, which we all do, and feeling uninterested in things over a long period. If that happens, you can talk to a trusted adult for help, from whom you may get more advice.
A. In addition, don’t confuse boredom with other emotions.
B. Allow yourself to be bored and see it as something good.
C. It can also contribute to imagination, ideas and creativity.
D. Believe it or not, it actually can be good for you to be bored.
E. Learning how to accept and respond to boredom is important.
F. Gradually, you will embrace boredom and become interested in it.
G. Don’t turn on the TV or reach for a device at the first sign of boredom.

【答案】范文
Grow Up Healthy with a Smartphone
Good morning, everyone! It’s a great honor for me to deliver a speech entitled Grow Up Healthy with a Smartphone.
Nowadays, an increasing number of students are getting addicted to smartphones, playing games or scrolling through short videos, even copying homework using various phone apps. This not only affects their study but also harms them both physically and mentally.
Faced with the current situation, we shouldn’t stand by. First, set clear rules for phone use, like no phones during study time. Second, replace phone time with meaningful activities — doing sports, or having fun with friends in person.
Let’s make a promise: put down our phones, focus on real life, and chase healthy growth. That’s all. Thank you.

It was the start of summer. For 15-year-old Daniel, summer usually meant bike rides, basketball games, and long afternoons at the park with his friends. But this year felt different — quieter, somehow.
Daniel’s neighbor, Mr. Wagner, had always been a big part of the neighborhood. He was the kind of adult kids actually liked to be around. Every winter, he helped clear snow off the sidewalks, even when no one asked. In the summer, he set up a sprinkler (洒水器) in his front yard for the kids to run through and handed out orange and grape juice from a little cooler. When Daniel hurt his knee trying to learn a skateboard trick, it was Mr. Wagner who cleaned the cut and covered it up. He even helped Daniel with his math homework once when he was stuck before a test. He didn’t have kids of his own, but he treated every child on the street like family.
That was why Daniel started to worry when he didn’t see Mr. Wagner outside anymore. No more chats, no more afternoon waves. Then one afternoon, an ambulance pulled into Mr. Wagner’s driveway. Daniel watched from his window, his heart sinking.
Later that evening, Daniel’s parents told him that Mr. Wagner had a serious sickness. His condition had worsened recently, and he now needed a wheelchair to get around — but there was no ramp (坡道) at his house, just three high steps leading to the front door.
The next day, Daniel and his friends took turns visiting Mr. Wagner. They brought him books from the library, helped water his garden, and even walked his dog. But Daniel knew that wasn’t enough. That evening, he gathered his friends under a big apple tree. “Mr. Wagner has done so much for us,” Daniel said firmly. “It’s our turn to help him.” The others nodded. That’s when the idea came — they would build him a ramp.

【答案】范文
Building the ramp wasn’t easy. None of them had built anything before, but their determination to help Mr. Wagner kept them going. They watched tutorial videos online, asked their parents how to measure, cut, and fasten wood, and borrowed tools from neighbors. Under the hot sun, they worked with sweat rolling down their faces, learning through trial and error. They accepted Mr. Wagner’s orange and grape juice but refused his suggestion to take a break. Every afternoon, the sounds of tools mixed with laughter, turning their street into the liveliest place.
After a full week of hard work, the ramp was finally ready. Mr. Wagner came to the door in his wheelchair. Slowly, he rolled onto the ramp and down into the yard. For the first time in weeks, he was outside again. He looked at the kids, his eyes shining. He told them he had been feeling lonely, but now, thanks to the ramp, he felt part of the world again. That summer, the ramp became more than just a way for Mr. Wagner to get outside. It became a symbol of kindness, connection, and community.

In the heart of Jiangsu Province, the 2025 Jiangsu Football City League, affectionately known as Suchao, has reached its peak with the 11th round of regular season matches scheduled for this weekend. The league has been an exciting event, winning the hearts of football enthusiasts across the nation.
Initially, the teams from Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou found themselves at the bottom of the standings. Playful netizens gave them the nickname “Three Fools by Taihu Lake,” which seemed to stick. However, these underdogs were far from foolish. Each city’s team had its moment of glory, proving that determination and resilience (韧性) could turn the tide.

28. Why did the author go to Prof. Gracie?
A. To discuss a novel. B. To submit a book report.
C. To argue for a writer. D. To ask for a reading list.
29 What did the author realize after seeing Gracie?
A. Writing is a matter of personal preferences.
B. Readers are often carried away by character.
C. Each type of literature has its unique end.
D. A story which begins well will end well.
30. What is expected of a good ending?
A. It satisfies readers’ taste. B. It fits with the story development.
C. It is usually positive. D. It is open for imagination.
31. Why does the author mention Peter Mountford and Elizabeth Sims?
A. To give examples of great novelists. B. To stress the theme of this issue.
C. To encourage writing for the magazine. D. To recommend their new books.
D
As the global population continues to expand, traditional farming methods are struggling to provide enough food. However, an innovative agricultural company in Compton, Los Angeles, may have the solution. Their revolutionary farming system could transform food production, offering remarkable efficiency and sustainability.
It’s far from the storybook picture of a farm — no mud, no boots, no hens pecking in the yard. Unlike conventional farms, this high-tech facility operates without soil, heavy machinery, or pesticides. Instead, it relies on automation and advanced plant science to maximize output. Using precisely calibrated (符合标准的) LED lighting and nutrient delivery systems, the facility produces up to 350 times more yields compared to traditional farms while using just 10% of the water — and it can be replicated (复制) almost anywhere.
D. Doubtful.
