When the call came for volunteers to visit local schools, I jumped at the opportunity, which eventually brought me a special experience. Spending the past 3 years with my head down and focusing on my PhD, I liked the idea of getting out and sharing what I was learning. In class, I answered questions raised by students with great passion. Though I returned to normal lab routine the next day, the experience planted a seed, leading me to a new career.
I entered graduate school with the hope of becoming a professor where I could balance research and teaching undergraduates. I was perfectly happy with my life for many years, but after I became a postdoc (博士后) I realized something was off. I felt lost in the fine details of the research papers and desired to offer a more significant contribution.
When I struggled, a career conference was held where scientists described how they had changed the job to positions at museums or research institutes, and how they shared scientific knowledge with children and others. They made me realize that science education could even be a career.
Initially, I wrote about scientific discoveries for the public and worked at a science enrichment center. Eventually I found a job teaching biology to public high school students. The first year was difficult, because I had to learn classroom management and the best teaching practices. But I soon adapted to my new job and became confident in my choice. It’s also pleasant to think I've done my best to guide my students’ lives in new directions, however big or small.
I sometimes look back wistfully (留恋地) on my research career, but when I see the immediate impact that I am making on young people’s lives, I know my new path is a good match for my skills and passions.
4. Why was the volunteer experience special for the author?
A. It introduced her to teaching. B. It freed her from research.
C. It tested her instructional skills. D. It showed her passion for science.
5. What made the author abandon the previous career?
A. The uncertainty about academic paths.
B. The pressure from publishing papers.
C. The suggestion from other scientists.
D. The ambition to make more difference.
6. What happened to the author after her departure from college?
A. She made new scientific discoveries.
B. She provided the best teaching practices.
C. She lost confidence in her job choice.
D. She encountered career shift challenges.
7. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. A New Trend: Science Meets Education
B. Teaching Science: A Researcher's Decision
C. From Lab to Classroom: A Scientist’s Journey
D. Life in Science: From Enthusiasm to Purpose
C
When was the last time you thought about music, and what role does music play in your life? If you enjoy music every day, you are likely gaining many benefits.
Music has a mathematical structure based on relationships between one note and the next. You may not be aware of it, but your brain has to do a lot of computing to make sense of it. So, not surprisingly, listening to music can improve learning, memory, and mental alertness (警觉性). It also boosts concentration and mindfulness, as listening, playing, or moving to music keeps you focused in the present moment and even puts you “in the zone” where you experience the happy state of “flow”.
Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain, and improve sleep quality, mood, well-being, and happiness. And especially when moving to music, your brain gets washed in beneficial “feel-good” hormones (激素). So music can potentially extend your life and enhance its quality.
Music is a vital element of culture, and every culture has specific types of music created, produced, and enjoyed by its people. In the U. S. alone, there are dozens of popular types, including Afro-beat, bluegrass, classical, and country. All these types of music have different origins and are associated with different subcultures, but they can be enjoyed by anyone, leading to cross-cultural appreciation and communication. Musical traditions are also connected to cultural celebrations — think about the music you associate with birthdays, graduations, weddings, and so on.
Your music preference in the moment can depend on how you want to feel. You likely pick specific types of music depending on whether you’re looking to relax or exercise, trying to be productive, or romantic. The right music can boost your mood and motivation to clean up, do homework, or work out. In contrast, you likely avoid music that makes you sad, or bored.
8. What is the function of the question in the beginning?
A. To put forward a new concept.
B. To offer some advice for readers.
C. To get the information of your interest.
D. To lead in the topic to be talked about.
9. Why can listening to music improve your ability to pay attention?
A. It keeps you concentrated. B. It makes you do computing.
C. It builds relations between notes. D. It draws your interest in new things.
10. The author mentions American music in paragraph 4 to show that ______.
A. music connects different peoples
B. the USA is a country with diverse cultures
C. each type of music is enjoyed by unique people
D. not all kinds of music are popular with people
11. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. Music has little effect on people’s emotions.
B. People choose music based on their desired emotions.
C. All types of music make people feel energetic.
D. Sad music is always avoided by people.
D
Researchers in the University of New South Wales have found a way to 3D print wagyu beef (和牛肉) in a lab — a step they believe will one day help make widely available and sustainably-produced cuts of cultured (实验室培养) meat that closely resemble original products.
Using stem cells that they took from wagyu cows, the researchers set out to create a structure with the characteristic marbling (大理石花纹) seen in wagyu beef that sets it apart from other cuts of beef. By isolating beef cells, the researchers organized how the muscles, blood vessels, and fat should be stacked (堆叠). The researchers then shaped these tissues into the form of a steak using a technique called 3D bio-printing, where cell structures can be layered to resemble real tissues in living things.
The researchers believe that proving that a wagyu steak can be accurately 3D-printed could be a big step toward a sustainable future where cultured meat can be created that closely resembles existing products. Its origins from real meat also differentiate it from plant-based options, like those created by Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.
“By improving this technology, it will be possible to not only reproduce complex meat structures, such as the beautiful marbling of wagyu beef but to also make subtle adjustments to the fat and muscle components,” Nathan, one of the project’s researchers, said in a statement.
Nathan said that with these adjustments, customers might one day be able to order a cultured cut of meat with the amount of fat they desire, tailor-made to their tastes and health concerns.
While this might be the first cut of wagyu beef ever to be 3D printed, other attempts have been made to bio-print steaks. In February this year, Aleph Farms and the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology jointly bio-printed and cultivated a rib eye steak using real cow cells.
12. How did the researchers make 3D-printed wagyu beef?
A. By layering different meat to produce wagyu beef.
B. By processing wagyu beef to join existing products.
C. By shaping different tissues with stem cells of wagyu cows.
D. By separating the muscles, blood vessels, and fat of wagyu cows.
13. What does Nathan probably think of the 3D-printed beef?
A. It can be improved and adjusted.
B. It will be replaced by better beef.
C. It can replace the real beef finally.
D. It will be hard to be popular among customers.
14. What does the underlined word “tailor-made” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Handmade. B. Personalized. C. Applied. D. Attached.
15. Why are Aleph Farms and the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering mentioned?
A. To introduce how to 3D-print beef.
B. To encourage people to make steaks.
C. To show more attempts to make bio-printed steaks.
D. To explain the importance of developing a rib eye steak.

In June’s room stands a bright blue clay vase. Not a perfect or beautiful vase, it is broken in several places. It has been mended, but spiderlike cracks (裂痕) remain. It tells a story of two girls’ friendship.
Amy and June met on a plane returning from Bangkok, where their fathers, business partners, attended meetings. June sat behind Amy. Midway, Amy hesitantly turned around and gave June a bright blue clay vase. It was a small gesture, but a simple friendship between two 4-year-olds was established.
Years flew by. Amy and June grew up together, played together, studied together and became each other’s closest friend.
However, people change as they grow up. Even the most special friendships can be destroyed. As Amy’s interests broadened, she started to see less and less of June. Though hurt, June tried to be understanding. She was still there for Amy when Amy needed support. But when she tried to bring up her difficulties, Amy brushed her off by saying, “Later.”
June couldn’t take it anymore. So one day she invited Amy to her house, hoping to figure their problem out. Instead, a terrible quarrel broke out. “What am I to you? Your friend or just your little dog?” June cried. To her shock, Amy was defensive and screamed back.
“June, I hate you!” With these words, Amy stormed out of June’s room, shutting the door hard behind her. A blue vase on the shelf jumped and fell onto the floor, crashing into several pieces. A friendship of ten years was broken, just like the vase.
One year passed. It was June’s fifteenth birthday. Instead of feeling happy, June only felt depressed. She remembered her fourteenth birthday. It’d been a great one, and they’d been so happy. Bittersweet tears filled June’s eyes. She could still remember the image of four-year-old Amy holding out the blue vase to her. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. June jumped up and rushed to open the door.

【答案】At the doorstep stood Amy, holding a small package. Amy looked nervous and hesitant, but she managed a small smile. “Happy birthday, June,” she said softly. June was taken aback but quickly stepped aside to let Amy in. They stood awkwardly for a moment before Amy handed over the package. “I know we haven’t talked in a while, but I wanted to give you this,” Amy said, her voice trembling slightly. June took the package, feeling a mix of emotions. A few minutes, Amy left.
Going to her room, June sat down on her bed and opened the gift. It was a notebook. Attached to it was a note that read, “Dear June, I'm sorry. I hope we can still be best friends.” June finally felt relieved. She called Amy and then they decided to repair the vase together. That's why the vase told the story of two girls and a friendship.
