For almost eight years, Leah Mackenzie and her husband Kyle have lived on the sea. They travel around the world on a 45-year-old sailboat, hoping to stay away from the pressure of modern life and live freely.
The couple, now in their mid-thirties, began their journey eight years ago and never looked back. Recently, their unusual lifestyle became popular online after Leah shared photos of their trips. The pictures showed their sailboat in Canada, French, Polynesia, Alaska, and islands in the South Pacific. She wrote, “Does this count as a wild home? My partner and our three pets have lived aboard this 45-year-old sailboat for eight years traveling full time around the world. The ocean is our backyard.”
Before setting sail, the couple had worked in Canada and they had never sailed. Leah said that sailing sounded like a dream for them. After that first sail with a small boat through the Gulf Islands, they were addicted at once. Soon, they upgraded to a larger boat called Jubel, and spent two years fixing, saving, and preparing for a life at sea. Over the years, they have sailed more than 30,000 nautical miles, crossed the Panama Canal twice, and spent a year exploring the South Pacific. Their next destinations include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Japan.
Still, life at sea is not always easy. Leah admitted, “This lifestyle has the highest highs and the lowest lows.” She detailed some of the harrowing experiences at sea, such as losing control of the boat during a storm with lightning flashing around them.
The couple has visited 23 countries and Leah says the cultural exchanges and remote (偏远的) destinations are meaningful. Although she admits missing family and friends, Leah said the experiences have been worthwhile. “Yes, they are dangerous, but so is living in a city in some ways. We plan to keep doing this until it’s no longer fun,” she said.
4. Why does the couple travel around the world on a 45-year-old sailboat?
A. To lead a modern life. B. To enjoy a free lifestyle.
C. To find a safe place to live in. D. To save money for their family.
5. What do we know about the couple from paragraph 3?
A. They failed to explore the South Pacific.
B. They have sailed to Indonesia twice so far.
C. They had rich sailing experience before sailing.
D. They felt pleased with the first sail through the Gulf Islands.
6. What does the underlined word “harrowing” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Frightening. B. Moving. C. Embarrassing. D. Comforting.
7. What does Leah think of the experiences at sea?
A. They are perfect in her eyes. B. They are full of luck.
C. They are of little meaning. D. They are worth it.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. D

Researchers have studied changes to mealtimes in older adults. They discovered people experience gradual shifts (改变) as they age, and these changes may show important information about their health.
Lead researcher Hassan Dashti explained that changes in when people eat, especially breakfast, can be a simple sign of overall health. He suggested that doctors and patients should use changes in mealtime routines as early warnings of hidden physical or mental problems. He also noted that keeping a regular (有规律的) eating schedule may support healthy aging and longer life.
To explore this idea, the team studied 2,945 adults in the UK, aged 42 to 94, who were followed for more than 20 years. They collected health data and blood samples (样本) to see how the mealtime might relate to health problems. They found that as older adults age, they tend to eat breakfast and dinner at later times, while also narrowing the overall time window in which they eat each day.
Later breakfast times were strongly related to health problems such as extreme sadness, low energy, poor sleep, and trouble preparing meals. People who ate later were also more likely to have oral health problems. Most importantly, later breakfast was connected with a higher risk of death. The researchers also found that people who were naturally “night owls” (preferring later sleep and wake times) tended to eat meals at later times.
“Up until now, we have had a limited (有限的) insight into how the mealtime develops later in life and how this change relates to overall health and longevity,” said Dashti. “Our findings help fill that gap by showing that later mealtimes, especially a later breakfast, are tied to both health challenges and increased death risk in older adults. These results add new meaning to the saying that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’, especially for older adults.”
8. What did Dashti suggest about mealtime changes?
A. They usually have no clear reasons. B. They depend mainly on sleeping habits.
C. They can show signs of a person’s health. D. They are common among young people.
9. What did the researchers find about older adults?
A. They have more food each day. B. They miss breakfast more often.
C. They take longer time over meals. D. They eat meals later during the day.
10. What can be inferred about people who eat breakfast late?
A. They tend to live longer lives. B. They usually feel more energetic.
C. They are less likely to stay up. D. They may face certain health risks.
11. Which word can best describe the results of the study?
A. Disappointing. B. Uncertain. C. Helpful. D. Unexpected.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. C

Students who plan to use AI (人工智能) tools to write their college admission essays (文章) should think twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details (细节) like race or gender are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
“The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer insights into who they are, beyond all the structured information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like any real applicant.”
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person’s natural writing style. This makes them undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the view of a specific person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between human and AI-written essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish (润色) their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but Lee remembers her own article-writing positively. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my background,” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.”
12. What is a problem about AI-written essays?
A. They are short of a personal touch. B. They are always off-topic.
C. They use many difficult words. D. They hardly describe an event in detail.
13. What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its use. B. Its findings. C. Its researchers. D. Its background.
14. What does Lee advise high school students to do?
A. Use AI tools to improve their writing. B. Turn to AI models for help anytime.
C. Depend on AI models to write essays. D. Avoid using AI tools for any writing.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Can AI Influence Students in College Writing?
B. Should Students Use AI Tools for College Essays?
C. Do Colleges Accept AI-based Application Essays?
D. Will AI Change How College Students Write Essays?
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. B

Four Beginner Running Mistakes
Running too fast. This means you treat every run like a race to keep up with or go faster than your pace (步速) in your last run. It can lead to overuse injuries. ___16___, especially when you’re first starting out. A conversational pace means that your running pace is no faster than a quick walk, but that’s totally fine.
Running at an unchanging pace. ___17___. It could be that none of your runs are particularly fast or slow. They just all feel the same. Training should include a mix of intensities (强度): easy runs, tempo runs, intervals and long runs. The easiest way to do all of those is to follow a training plan designed for your goal.
Ignoring (忽视) strength training. We often don’t think about strength training until we’re faced with an injury or stop making progress with running. ___18___. When it comes to time, strength work doesn’t have to be done separately in the gym. You also don’t need to be a fitness expert or throw big weights around.
___19___. Everyone has a unique starting point when it comes to running. Making a comparison with others can lead to unrealistic expectations or disappointment. Running is a personal journey and what works for someone else might not work for you. Remember to track and celebrate your own progress whether it’s a faster pace or feeling stronger during a run. ___20___. By keeping the focus on yourself, you’ll create a running habit that works for you.
A. Comparing yourself to others
B. Expecting every run to be great
C. Running success comes from sticking to it
D. You always feel that you only have one pace when running
E. The things that often prevent this are time and expert skills
F. You will get bored when you always run on the same course
G. So use an easy pace where you can comfortably hold a conversation
【答案】16. G 17. D 18. E 19. A 20. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了新手跑步的四大常见误区及对应的注意事项与建议。
【16题详解】
上文“Running too fast. This means you treat every run like a race to keep up with or go faster than your pace (步速) in your last run. It can lead to overuse injuries.(跑得过快。这意味着你把每次跑步都当成一场比赛,力求跟上或超越上一次的步速。这种做法可能导致过度使用损伤。)”指出跑太快会导致过度使用损伤;而空后“especially when you’re first starting out.(尤其是刚开始跑步时)”则解释了对话式步速的定义。选项G“So use an easy pace where you can comfortably hold a conversation (因此,应采用轻松的步速,让你能舒适地与人交谈)”既给出了具体的解决方案,其中“hold a conversation”与后文“conversational pace”直接呼应,逻辑衔接紧密,完美衔接上下文。故选G。
【17题详解】
根据段首句“Running at an unchanging pace.(跑速一成不变。)”可知,本段主题是跑速不变;选项D“You always feel that you only have one pace when running(你跑步时总觉得自己只有一种步速)”精准概括了“unchanging pace”的含义,与后文“It could be that none of your runs are particularly fast or slow. They just all feel the same. (可能每次跑既不算特别快,也不算特别慢,只是感觉千篇一律。)”中的“all feel the same”语义完全契合,是对主题句的具体阐释,逻辑连贯。故选D。
【18题详解】
上文“We often don’t think about strength training until we’ re faced with an injury or stop making progress with running.(我们往往直到遭遇伤病,或是跑步进度停滞不前时,才会想到力量训练。)”提到人们常忽视力量训练;选项E“The things that often prevent this are time and expert skills (通常阻碍人们进行力量训练的是时间和专业技能。)”延续上文内容,指出了人们忽视力量训练是因为时间和专业技能。故选E。
【19题详解】
空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据下文“Everyone has a unique starting point when it comes to running. Making a comparison with others can lead to unrealistic expectations or disappointment. Running is a personal journey and what works for someone else might not work for you.(每个人的跑步起点都是独一无二的。与他人比较可能会产生不切实际的期待,或是导致失望情绪。跑步是一场个人旅程,适合别人的方法未必适合你。)”可知,本段主要讲述了每个人的跑步起点不同,与他人比较会导致不切实际的期待或失望。选项A“Comparing yourself to others (与他人比较。)”与下文内容一致,符合题意。故选A。
【20题详解】
上文“Remember to track and celebrate your own progress whether it’s a faster pace or feeling stronger during a run.(记住要追踪并庆祝自己的进步——无论是步速提升,还是跑步时感觉更有力。)”建议关注并庆祝自己的进步。选项C“Running success comes from sticking to it (跑步的成功源于坚持)”承接上文内容,指出成功源自于坚持。故选C。

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Li Yue was a hardworking but quite shy student. She loved English and had always been at the top of her class in written exams, but speaking in front of others was her greatest fear. This year, to her own surprise, she had made it to the final of the school’s English speech competition. The topic was “The Power of Friendship”, which made her think immediately of Wang Lei. Li Yue had spent weeks preparing, writing, and rewriting her speech with the help of her best friend, Wang Lei. Wang Lei had always been her biggest supporter, encouraging her to step out of her comfort zone. He had practiced with her for countless hours, patiently listening and giving suggestions. Whenever Li Yue felt nervous or looked unsure, he would smile and say, “Believe in yourself — you’re fully prepared”, a sentence that rang loud in her heart like a steady drumbeat.
Standing backstage, Li Yue’s heart was beating quickly and loudly. She could feel her hands getting sweaty. She looked through the curtain secretly and saw the audience, a sea of faces that seemed to go on forever. Then she saw her main competitor, Sun Qian, walking off the stage with a confident smile, and receiving loud applause (掌声). The sound felt like a wave of pressure crashing over her. Suddenly, Li Yue’s confidence disappeared. Her hands started to shake uncontrollably, and the words of her carefully prepared speech seemed to disappear from her mind, leaving behind a terrifying blank. “What if I forget everything? What if they laugh at me? What if I disappoint Wang Lei after all his help?” she thought, fear rising inside her. She took a deep breath, but it did little to calm her nerves. Just then, the host’s voice rang through the speakers, “And now, let’s welcome our next contestant, Li Yue!”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Li Yue slowly walked onto the stage.

Taking a deep breath, Li Yue calmed down quickly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Li Yue slowly walked onto the stage. She felt the bright spotlight shining directly into her eyes. The audience became completely quiet, all eyes focused on her. Just as her mind went blank, she suddenly noticed a familiar figure in the front row — it was Wang Lei, who gave her a warm, encouraging smile and a firm thumbs-up. At that moment, Wang Lei’s words echoed in her ears, “Believe in yourself — you are fully prepared.”
Taking a deep breath, Li Yue calmed down quickly. She no longer focused on memorizing the speech word for word. Instead, she began speaking from her heart, sharing the story of her and Wang Lei. She talked about those late nights spent practicing together, the times Wang Lei patiently corrected her pronunciation, and the warmth she felt during moments of hesitation. Her voice grew steadier and more confident, and the words flowed naturally. When she finished, the hall exploded with applause. At that moment, Li Yue knew she not only overcame her fear but also proved that true friendship is the greatest power of all.

8 What did Dashti suggest about mealtime changes?
B. Uncertain. C. Helpful. D. Unexpected.
D
13 What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its use.
