Growing up on the Guanzhong Plain, He Jing didn’t start mountaineering until 18. Her first climb, in 2006, was in the Qinling Mountains, and it sparked a passion for the sport.
In 2012, feeling sad for the loss of her grandmother, He attempted her first mountain over 5,000 meters — Mount Siguniang in Sichuan province. The experience provided her with a sense of peace and relief. “As I approached the summit and saw the rosy light on the snow, I found peace and a release from my inner confusion,” she recalled.
Since then, He has been devoted to climbing high-altitude peaks. She summited her first 8,000-meter peak, Mount Cho Oyu, in 2016, using just one bottle of oxygen. Realizing she could handle the extreme altitude (海拔), she decided to attempt future climbs without oxygen, a move partly motivated by cost savings. Climbing without oxygen carries significant risks due to the thin atmosphere at high altitudes. To prepare, He trained strictly, running at least five times a week, climbing 200 flights of stairs with a 20-kilogram load twice weekly, and using an oxygen-restricting mask to simulate (模拟) high-altitude conditions.
“At altitudes above 8,000 meters, the human brain experiences extreme lack of oxygen, and the body becomes sleepy. I kept telling myself not to fall asleep, as I might never wake up again,” she said. Her first successful summit without bottled oxygen came on Sept. 25,2017, when she reached the top of Mount Manaslu in Nepal.
On Oct. 9 this year, she reached the summit of the 8,027-meter Mount Shishapangma in China’s Xizang autonomous region, becoming the first person from China and the third woman in the world to scale all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters without the use of additional oxygen.
4. What motivated He Jing to attempt her climbing in 2012?
A. Her enthusiasm for climbing.
B. Her desire to challenge herself.
C. Her sorrow for losing her grandmother.
D. Her determination to handle the extreme altitude.
5. How did He Jing prepare herself for climbing without additional oxygen?
A. By running four or five times a week.
B. By training in high-altitude conditions.
C. By climbing stairs with loads regularly.
D. By wearing a mask with enough oxygen.
6 Which of the following words best describe He?
A. Energetic and sociable. B. Determined and passionate.
C. Demanding and humble. D. Strong-willed and friendly.
7. What does He’s experience tell us?
A. Think well before you act.
B. More haste (匆忙), less speed.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
Not sleeping enough or getting a bad night’s sleep over and over makes it hard to control your appetite. And that sets you up for all sorts of health problems, including obesity (肥胖) , heart disease and high blood pressure.
The link between poor sleep and a greater body mass index(BMI) has been shown in study after study, but researchers typically relied on the memories of the participants to record how well they slept.
Sleep apps on fitness trackers, smartphones and watches have changed all that. In a new study researchers tracked sleep quality for 120,000 people for up to two years.
The results showed sleep durations (持续时间) and patterns are highly variable between people. Despite that, the study found people with BMIs of 30 or above — which is considered obese by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-had slightly shorter sleep durations and more variable sleep patterns.
It didn’t take much less sleep to see the effect. People with BMIs over 30 only slept about 15 minutes less than those less weighty people.
There were some limitations to the study, naps(午睡) were not included, other health conditions could not be factored in, and people who use wearable tracking devices are typically younger, healthier and from a higher economic status than those who do not wear trackers.
“These are quite pricey devices, and they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The results would need to be validated (确认) by the appropriate FDA-approved devices, and because the study is likely on younger people who are more economically well off, it needs further study whether that really applies to older folks with poor sleep.” said Dasgupta, the associate program director.
However, Dasgupta added, a major plus for the study is that it did monitor people for over two years, and the results corroborated previous research and were “not surprising.”
While we cannot determine the direction of association from our study result, these findings provide further support to the idea that sleep patterns are associated with weight management and overall health.
8. How does the new study differ from previous studies?
A. It lasts the longest time in history. B. It uses apps to record participants’ sleep.
C. It specially improves participants’ sleep quality. D. It relied on participants’ memory to record data.
9. What is Dasgupta’s attitude toward the new finding?
A. Doubtful B. Shocked C. Cautious D. Dissatisfied
10. What does the underlined word “corroborated” probably mean in Paragraph 8?
A. limit B. correct C. confirm D. combine
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Sleep Quality Varies from Person to Person
B. Sleep Apps Are Widely Used to Monitor Sleep
C. Young People Are Paying More Attention to Obesity
D Lack of Sleep May Be Possibly Connected with Obesity
D
No one in the US has 3D-printed a two-story house before. But now three companies are working together to print the first large, two-story house in the US.
The house, which is in Houston, Texas, was designed by a company. Another company provided the 3D printer. And a construction company is doing the actual building. Leslie Lok. who designed the house, says there are special challenges involved in printing the two-story house. One of the biggest is the size of the machine needed for the building. The 3D printer in Houston is massive. It weighs over 12 tons.
Ms. Lok says printing the house will take the massive machine about 330 hours. That’s about eight normal work weeks. But the team isn’t in a rush. Though it’s a two-year project, the actual printing didn’t start until last July. The house is now about halfway finished.
“We are not trying to beat the clock,” says Hikmat Zerbe, who works for the construction company. Instead, they’re using the house as a “big laboratory” to learn more about 3D-printing houses. They want to see how the concrete reacts “under different weather conditions”.
They also want to figure out how to make 3D-printing faster and cheaper. Mr. Zerbe says that currently, 3D-printing a house with concrete costs more than building a house with wood. That’s partly because the technology is new. With time, Mr. Zerbe expects the costs of 3D-printed houses to go down. He thinks printers will improve and make it easier to create more houses quickly. 3D-printed concrete houses are stronger and hold up better in serious storms than house built with wood. This can save money in the long run. Since the machine is doing the building, fewer workers are needed, which also saves money.
Besides, with 3D-printing, it’s easy to make each house different from other houses. These kinds of changes can apply to almost any tiling. Hikmat Zerbe says that means in the future, each house could be created specially for its owner.
12. What is a big problem in printing the two-story house?
A. The limited time. B. The lack of skilled workers.
C The need for huge 3D printers. D. The shortage of building materials.
13. What is to be studied in the building process?
A. How the printed houses stand wear and tear.
B. How 3D-printed houses are made stronger.
C. How workers can print large houses quicker.
D. How concrete changes with the shift of weather.
14. What is a disadvantage of the 3D-printed house at present?
A. Its cost is higher. B. It can’t survive the storm.
C. It uses special concrete. D. It needs experienced workers.
15. How does Mr. Zerbe feel about the future of 3 D-printing?
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Worried. D. Hopeful.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make our needs meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse (冲动) I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name, I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
“Yes,” she said in surprise, with extreme excitement. “It was my umbrella which had been stolen a year ago.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead. Her happiness at retrieving (找回) this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I can only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance whatsoever.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so I could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overwhelmed by misery.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus.

6. Which of the following words best describe He?
A. Energetic and sociable. B. Determined and passionate.
C. Demanding and humble. D. Strong-willed and friendly.
7. What does He’s experience tell us?
A. Think well before you act.
B. More haste (匆忙), less speed.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

D. Lack of Sleep May Be Possibly Connected with Obesity
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11.

C. The need for huge 3D printers.
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Worried. D. Hopeful.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. D

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Nowadays, more and more middle school students use the electronic dictionary pen to learn English. Our class had a discussion on whether we should use it.
40% of the students think it is necessary. They think the pen is easy to carry and it is easy to look up words using it. Besides, it can help us correct pronunciation and practice listening. However, 60% hold a different view. They think that the electronic dictionary pen has a small vocabulary and fewer explanations of words. Furthermore, we may rely on it and not make efforts to memorize words.
I’m in favor of learning English with the help of a dictionary pen because we can study English more conveniently by using it.
(高级范文)
Given the electronic dictionary pen is used by a growing number of middle school students, we had a debate on whether students should use it.
40% support the idea of using it. First, it’s easy to carry, which brings convenience to our English learning. Second, it’s faster to get the meaning by scanning a word. Last but not least, more functions are available, allowing us to make our pronunciation more precise and raise our listening level. The remaining 60% hold the belief that we shouldn’t use it, claiming that its limited vocabulary lessens what we can achieve. Meanwhile, a shortage of specific explanations leads to a lack of understanding. What’s worse, we may become too dependent when it comes to memorizing new words.
Personally, I think using electronic dictionary pens should be allowed, which will help us learn English more conveniently.

The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard a man talking heartily to her and went to the door. He was a delivery man, and his arms were full of parcels. “This is a mistake,” I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I didn’t know what to do. Later, Peggy and I sat on the floor looking at each other. What a surprise! I looked for the name of the sender.
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes. I picked up the note, which read “Thanks for returning of the umbrella. Merry Christmas! “It was sent by the lady. Holding the note tightly, I was on the verge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading through my body. On that cold Christmas, I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts one by one in happiness. A sweet peace flooded me like a blessing which made me hopeful again.
