Walking into school on the first day of sixth grade, my legs felt weak and my hands were shaking. I was always nervous on the first day of school. But this was my last first day of primary school, and I had never had a male teacher before. Somehow, I knew this school year would be different, but I had no idea the lifelong influence it would have on me.
Mr. Tony Harrison quickly soothed (安抚) my uneasiness with his friendly welcome and a big smile on his face. “Welcome to sixth grade! Take any seat,” he said. Mr. H, he preferred to be called, was young, energetic and showed happiness with his smiling face and cheerful voice. I chose a seat near the front of the classroom. My mum always told me sitting in the back encouraged trouble, besides I was also nearsighted.
Mr. H was an encouraging teacher and he made learning exciting with his fun ideas. I had always loved school, but somehow Mr. H made school even better. It did not matter if you were the best or worst student in the class, he made you feel special.
Smiley faces were his trademark. He always put a smiley face on the chalkboard, homework assignments and test papers. When he signed my yearbook, he added a smiley face. I am sure he did the same in everyone’s book. At the end of the school year, Mr. H gave each student a yellow, enamel pin-on(珐琅别针) smiley face. Years later, when I saw my first smiley face emoji, I immediately thought of Mr. H.
I realised Mr. H’s influence on me when I started my first job in high school. Even as a part-timer working in the mail room, I had the ability to influence others and make their day. Mr. H taught many students and adults during his lifetime. His cheerful outlook and kindness left a positive influence on me and countless others.

An 84-year-old man from Sichuan has become an online sensation (轰动) after his granddaughter, 25-year-old Wan Minghui, quit her job and set out to help him realize some of his wishes. Their short videos have attracted millions of views online.
Visiting Beijing is a long-cherished wish of the old man and his wife before she passed away. Holding a photo of his wife, Wan’s grandfather sang the national anthem (国歌) and wiped away tears when he attended the national flag-raising ceremony in Beijing at 6 am in the video.
At some destinations in Beijing, he was photographed with his wife’s picture, which he brought along to make it feel as though she were traveling with him. The videos have received more than five million likes and a long list of comments, including praise for Little Wan, best wishes for her grandfather and discussions about the meaning of life.
Wan quit her job in May to accompany her grandfather after she noticed his loneliness during a visit to him one day. “My grandpa was lonely, which made me sad, and the idea of quitting my job to accompany him came to mind. He accompanied me as I grew up and I will accompany him as he grows old” she said.
Neither her parents nor her grandfather agreed with her decision to quit her job. Her grandfather finally agreed after Wan told him that she could work from home, and she began to record his life in videos.
Reading letters her grandfather had written to his wife, Wan learned that the couple had many regrets, including some plans they had never carried out. So she began to help him realize them. Although Wan has to stay up late to work sometimes, she said it’s all worthwhile.
8. Why did Wan make up her mind to quit her job?
A. Because she was bored with her present job.
B. Because she would have a lot of time after quitting.
C. Because she has had a close relationship with her grandfather.
D. Because she discovered her grandfather was very lonely.
9 What can we know about the grandfather in the article?
A. He always took his wife’s photo with him everywhere.
B. He has been living with his granddaughter after his wife passed away.
C. He was happy when he knew Wan’s decision to quit her job.
D. He and his wife loved each other deeply although they had a lot of regrets.
10. What’s the people’s attitude towards Wan Minghui’s behaviour in this passage?
A. Supportive B. Opposed C. Unconcerned D. Doubtful
11. What does the passage tell us?
A. Aging is unavoidable. B. Be responsible for your decisions.
C. Companionship is the best love. D. Travel around to enjoy life.
D
“Come on! All of us are cutting (逃课) maths. Who wants to go to take that quiz? We’re going to take a walk and get lunch instead. Let’s go!” says the coolest kid in your class. Do you do what you know is right and go to maths class take the quiz and all? Or do you give in and go with him?
People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act and get you to do something, it’s called peer pressure. It’s something everyone has to deal with — even adults.
Peers influence your life, even if you don’t realize it, just by spending time with you. You learn from them, and they learn from you. It’s only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group.
Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system, or you got others excited about your new favourite book, and now everyone is reading it. Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them.
It’s difficult to say “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and what is wrong can help you know what is the right thing you should do.
It can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who is willing to say “no” too. If you continue to face peer pressure and you’re finding it difficult to handle it, talk to someone you trust — a parent, or a teacher. They can help you feel much better and prepare you for the next time you face peer pressure.
12. With the author’s words in the first paragraph, what is the kid doing?
A. Planning some interesting activities after school. B. Making an announcement about a dinner party.
C. Persuading other kids to take a quiz with him. D. Encouraging other kids to cut class.
13. What can be known according to the author?
A. For kids, peer pressure may do more harm than good.
B. Maths is the most difficult subject for most kids.
C. Kids today are under greater pressure than before.
D. Peer pressure exists among people of all age groups.
14. What is suggested to the readers in the last paragraph?
A. Making more close friends while at school.
B. Learning to refuse their friends in a polite way.
C. Getting support from someone else if necessary.
D. Building closer relations with their parents and teachers.

“Come on! All of us are cutting (逃课) maths. Who wants to go to take that quiz? We’re going to take a walk and get lunch instead. Let’s go!” says the coolest kid in your class. Do you do what you know is right and go to maths class, take the quiz and all?

14. What is suggested to the readers in the last paragraph?
