When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

A. He was inspired by his teacher. B. He could pass positive energy to readers.
C. He wanted to share his school experiences. D. He found he had a talent for writing.

Although America and England are closely connected in many ways, they have differences. They use different money, drive on opposite sides of the road, and American presidents can’t quite match British royal family’s ability to get well dressed. However, one interesting difference lies in their language. Both nations speak English, so why do their accents differ?
To understand this, let’s see the basics of language sounds. An accent refers to the way a language is pronounced. Basically, a dialect (a language that is typically spoken in a particular area) includes variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Main factors that affect a dialect include its distance from its language source and connection to different languages.
Like a dialect, today’s American English with its specific accent came from England at first. A linguist points out that just one generation after the first settlers in America, Americans began pronouncing English words differently. Being far from England, they started to sound different from English speakers. Americans also heard and used words from Natives and settlers from other European countries like Sweden, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. These served to change American accent and create a new kind of English.
Another big reason why American English and British English sound different is a change in language called rhotacism, which affects the pronunciation of the “r” sound. American English is rhotic, meaning “r” sounds are pronounced, while many British accents, known as Received Pronunciation, are non-rhotic, making words like “card” sound more like “cahd.”
At the beginning, both American and British English were rhotic. However, after the American Revolutionary War (a war from 1775 to 1783, through which America won independence from England), upper-class and upper-middle-class British people started using non-rhotic speech to show off their higher place in the society. That gradually became the commonly-used British accent and affected many popular expressions. Americans mostly kept their rhotic accent. However, cities built near the sea, like Boston, had a lot of communication with non-rhotic British speakers. That is why you may hear Bostonians say things like “pahk the cah” instead of “park the car.” Interestingly, this difference in accent also reflects in driving habits: British people don’t often drive automatic cars that most Americans like and they see the preference as a social difference.
28. According to paragraph 2, a dialect can be mainly affected by ________.
A. how it connects with other languages B. the range in which it is used
C. how it approaches neighboring accents D. the basics of language sounds
29. What made British English non-rhotic?
A. That earlier British accent lost its popularity in USA.
B. Some British people’s desire to show their social class.
C. Americans’ preference for the “r” sound during the war.
D. That it’s hard for the British to pronounce the “r” sound.
30. We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A. Bostonians talk to British people with an American accent
B. the first settlers in America began a different pronunciation
C. one’s choice of accent will gradually affect his habit of driving
D. words of other sources helped lead to a new accent in America
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A When Americans began developing a different accent.
B. Why American and British people have a different accent.
C. How American and British English differ in pronunciation.
D. What made American English different from British English.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. B

【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Americans also heard and used words from Natives and settlers from other European countries like Sweden, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. A recent fireworks show, held in the Himalayas by a well-known outdoor brand (品牌) working with a famous artist, has drawn widespread attention and heated discussions. The event, wanting to put art and nature together, has raised concerns about its possible influence on the local ecosystem.
The brand said that the event was designed to celebrate the beauty of nature through art. However, many people have expressed worries about the environmental results of setting off fireworks in such an ecologically sensitive region.
Environmental experts point out that the Himalayas are home to unique wildlife and plants that could be disturbed by the loud noises and bright lights of fireworks. Moreover, the remains of fireworks might pollute the soil and water sources, which are extremely important for the local environment.
Although the brand stated that they had taken measures to reduce the environmental impact, such as using biodegradable (可生物降解的) materials and cleaning up after the event, the public remains unsure. Some people believe that no fireworks show should be held in such a fragile natural habitat.
Local authorities (管理部门) have also begun to look into the event. They emphasized the importance of balancing artistic activities with environmental protection, especially in areas as fragile as the Himalayas.
This event has caused a broader discussion about the responsibility of artists and brands to protect nature when expressing art. It reminds us that while art is valuable, it should not come at the cost of harming the environment.
Up to now, the brand has not yet given a detailed follow-up plan about the show. All eyes are on the brand, and the public is eagerly waiting to see how the brand will reply to these concerns.

When encountering unfamiliar words or ideas, often the literary, historical, or social context of the text can offer clues as to what the character or writer is talking about.(学会欣赏语境。

I attended an international school where there were many sports activities. When our school announced a new badminton program, David, my classmate and good friend, decided to join it right away.
“Badminton? How hard can it be?” I joked and said to David. On the first day, however, my confidence quickly disappeared. My serves were weak; my smashes (扣球) were off-target; my footwork was a mess. Meanwhile, David was a natural. His moves were smooth and powerful, and he improved quickly. Seeing my depressed expression, he encouraged me, “You’ll get better soon.” But I couldn’t help feeling frustrated. Coach Li noticed my struggles and said, “Badminton isn’t just about skill. It’s about persistence, focus, and teamwork. Keep trying, young guy!”
A few weeks later, Coach Li made an exciting announcement: There would be a badminton tournament in our school. David and I were paired as a doubles team. He was excited, but I was nervous. “What if I hold us back?” I wondered. During practice, Coach Li gathered us and said, “Remember, badminton isn’t about being perfect on your own. It’s about helping each other and thinking strategically.” His words stayed with me, but I still doubted whether we could succeed. Then, something unexpected happened. While cleaning up the storage room, I discovered an old badminton guidebook filled with clever strategies and tips. I started studying it at night, practicing moves like deceptive serves (假发球) and sharp net shots. “Maybe this can give us an edge,” I thought.
On tournament day, the gym was full of excitement. Our early matches were tough, but thanks to David’s skill and my newly learned strategies, we fought hard and won. I used unexpected drops and tricky shots from the book, surprising our opponents. Feeling amazed, David asked me, “Where did that come from?” I just smiled. Each victory boosted my confidence, but I knew the final challenge would be the hardest.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The final match was against the school’s top players.

At the decisive moment, the tension reached its peak.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The final match was against the school’s top players. At first, their smashes were fast, and their placement was precise. Soon, we were falling behind. I felt the pressure building. During a timeout, Coach Li reminded us, “Adapt to the situation. Work together and never give up.” David turned to me and said, “Use what you’ve learned. Let’s fight to the end.” I nodded. When the match continued, I used a trick serve from the guidebook — a high, spinning serve that suddenly dropped. The opponents hesitated, and we scored. This boosted our energy, and we started pushing back.
At the decisive moment, the tension reached its peak. Everyone in the gym was quiet as the shuttlecock flew back and forth. Suddenly, the opponents hit a high shot toward the back of the court, far past me. I ran and dove, barely hitting the shuttlecock. It bounced off the net and landed on their side. The crowd cheered as our opponents stood there, shocked. We won the championship! I couldn’t believe it. That moment taught me something I’ll never forget: Badminton is about more than skill. It’s about focus, determination, and never giving up, even when things seem impossible.

24. What was the author’s life like when he was 12?
A. Boring. B. Peaceful. C. Painful. D. Meaningful.
25. How did the volunteer work benefit the author?
A. It made him popular in his town. B. It helped him find the meaning of life.
C. It helped him understand others’ lives better. D. It helped to shape his dream career.
26. Why did the author choose writing as his job?
A. He was inspired by his teacher. B. He could pass positive energy to readers.
C. He wanted to share his school experiences. D. He found he had a talent for writing.
27. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
A. Say “no” to bullies bravely. B. Make positive changes in their lives.
C. Treat others with kindness in daily life. D. Learn to care more about others’ feelings.

Although America and England are closely connected in many ways they have differences. They use different money, drive on opposite sides of the road, and American presidents can’t quite match British royal family’s ability to get well dressed. However, one interesting difference lies in their language. Both nations speak English, so why do their accents differ?
To understand this let’s see the basics of language sounds.
A. When Americans began developing a different accent.
B. Why American and British people have a different accent.
C. How American and British English differ in pronunciation.
D. What made American English different from British English.

32. What is the purpose of the show?
A. To attract more tourists.
B. To draw attention to the brand.
C. To test new firework materials.
D. To express the beauty of nature with art.
33. Which might be a direct result of the show?
A. Attracting more tourists. B. Polluting local resources.
C. Killing wildlife and plants. D. Improving the brand’s image.
34. Which is the key focus of the local authorities on this event?
A. Supporting more artistic events.
B. Stopping all fireworks in the area.
C. Making rules on artistic activities.
D. Keeping nature and art hand in hand.
35. What might be expected of the brand by the public?
A To say sorry to the public. B. To help fix the environment.
C. To pay for the nature damage. D. To improve fireworks’ quality.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The final match was against the school’s top players.
