I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(唤起) an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with. Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions(认识) of the limited English speaker. I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English rejected the quality of what she had to say. That is because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. I started writing fiction in 1985. And for reasons I won’t get into today, I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken”, and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的) language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure: I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show; her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts. 41. By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that ________. A. she uses English in foreign trade B. she is fascinated by languages C. she works as a translator D she is a writer by profession 42. The author used to think of her mother’s English as ________. A. impolite B. amusing C. imperfect D. practical 43. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3? A. Americans do not understand broken English. B. The author’s mother was not respected sometimes. C. The author’s mother had positive influence on her D. Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts. 44. The author gradually realizes her mother’s English is ________. A. well structured B. in the old style C. easy to translate D. rich in meaning 45. What is the passage mainly about? A. The changes of the author’s attitude to her mother’s English. B. The limitation of the author’s perception of her mother. C. The author’s misunderstanding of “limited” English. D. The author’s experiences of using broken English. In recent years, short videos have become extremely popular around the world. With just a mobile phone, people can easily create, share, and watch short videos on various platforms. Short videos, usually lasting from a few seconds to several minutes, have brought both positive and negative influences to our lives. On the positive side, short videos provide a convenient way for people to relax and have fun. After a long day at work or study, you can quickly open a short-video app and enjoy funny skits, beautiful music performances, or amazing travel vlogs. They can make you laugh, relieve stress, and broaden your horizons. Also, short videos offer a great platform for people to show their talents. Many ordinary people have become famous overnight by sharing their special skills, like singing, dancing, or handicraft-making, through short videos. What’s more, short videos can be used for education. Teachers can make short video lessons to make learning more interesting and efficient. Students can also use them to review knowledge and learn new things in a more engaging way. However, short videos also have some negative effects. Spending too much time on short videos may lead to addiction. Some people can’t help but keep swiping their phones and watching one video after another, wasting a lot of time that could have been spent on more meaningful things, such as studying, working, or communicating with family and friends. Moreover, the quality of short videos varies greatly. Some videos contain false information, bad values, or even harmful content, which may mislead viewers, especially young people. In a word, short videos have become an important part of our digital life. While enjoying the convenience and fun they bring, we should also be aware of their potential negative impacts and use them in a more rational (理智的) and responsible way. 46. How long do short videos usually last? A. From a few minutes to an hour. B. From a few seconds to several minutes. C. From several minutes to half an hour. D. From half an hour to an hour. 47. What is a positive influence of short videos? A. They always make people feel stressed. B. They waste people’s time. C. They offer a platform for people to show talents. D. They always contain false information. 48. What does the underlined word “addiction” mean? A. 着迷,上瘾 B. 放松 C. 专注 D. 忽视 49. What's the problem with some short videos? A. They are all too long. B. A Spend as much time as possible on short videos. B. Never watch short videos. C. Only watch short videos made by famous people. D. Use short videos rationally and responsibly. As is known to everyone, the options we make have an effect on our future. Suppose I am an intelligent student with good marks. But on the other hand, being lazy, I do badly in my examinations. I am refused admission to university and cannot find a good job. The golden future I had imagined will never be. All these are all from a bad choice! However your choices affect your future in a way that is a lot more complicated. This is because nearly all the choices you make affect your character. Your character is displayed through your choices, but it is also formed by them. No matter when you make a choice, your character changes or grows, or diminishes depending on whether the decision you made is wise or foolish. Your character is being made by you, bit by bit, choice by choice. And so, you become the sort of person who will make a certain kind of choice in a certain situation. Some will argue this is not true. After all, the field of human choice is a narrow one. Most of the things that form us in our lives are not subject to choice. We cannot choose when and where to be born, whether our families will be rich or poor, kind or cruel. We cannot even entirely control who we will meet in our lives. With so much that we cannot choose, how can we be said to be responsible for anything? There is some truth in this. We are thrown into life without any say over the matter, and have little control over most of it. However, we do have some power of choice, and we do control the most important thing of all: how we respond to circumstances. We can choose to keep struggling in hard times, or to give up. This ability to choose how we behave and respond is a great gift. It is our key to having confidence in the future. It is human nature to fear the future, as the future is unknown. You can’t entirely control what will happen to you tomorrow. But if you have confidence in your character, formed by years of making good choices, then you do know one thing for certain about the future: no matter what happens, you will make a choice that you will be proud of. At every moment, then, practise forming your character when you make your choices, no matter how small they are. Remember: your choices form your character. And your character determines your future. 51. What example does the author use to illustrate the impact of bad choices on the future? A. A student who fails to get into university due to laziness despite good academic potential. B. A person who can’t choose their birthplace and family background. C. Someone who gives up easily during hard times. D. An individual who is afraid of the unknown future. 52. What can we infer from the passage? A. We have no control over any aspect of our lives except making choices. B. Good character formed by making wise choices gives us confidence in the future. C. External factors like birthplace and family background have no impact on our life. D. Small choices in daily life don’t matter in shaping our character. 53. In the author’s opinion, what is the most important thing we can control in life? A. When and where to be born. B. Whether our families will be rich or poor. C. How we respond to different circumstances. D. Who we will meet in our lives. 54. According to the passage, why are our choices closely related to our future? A. Because choices directly decide our social status. B. Because choices can influence our character which determines our future. C. Because making choices helps us gain more control over external circumstances. D. Because every choice we make ensures a successful future. 55 What is the main idea of the passage? A. The ways to make good choices in different situations. B. The uncontrollable factors existing in our life. C. The significant relationship between our choices, character and future. D. The importance of having confidence in the future. 第Ⅱ卷 非选择题 五、阅读表达(本大题共5小题,每小题1分,共5分) 读下面文章,根据要求回答问题。 I’ve always been creative since I was a little girl. My childhood was filled with arts, crafts (手工) and music, and every day was an exciting adventure of creation. Somewhere along the way, however, I lost touch with my creative self. At 21, I landed a job at a big insurance company out of my business degree. I would go to the office, sit at my desk and repeat the same work five days a week 9 to 5. The days were long and tedious. Working this way for one year was painful enough, let alone a lifetime. Before long I decided to make a change. One thing I had developed an interest in was sewing, so I took a sewing course at a community college. It was only a five-week course but it awakened my interest and got my confidence up. As I dreamt bigger, I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. I attended classes two nights a week. Although exhausting, it gave me energy, enthusiasm and happiness. As it became clearer that fashion was what I wanted to do full time, the reality of my day-to-day work at the insurance company became harder. I felt bored. No energy, no motivation and zero fulfilment (满足感). I knew I needed to make a bigger change. After struggling for quite a while, I made a difficult decision — leaving my job and studying my design course full time. Two years later I got my diploma. The last few years have been exciting because I’ve been following my heart to do what I love. Today I am living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand. Sometimes it’s hard to make a change, but I’m so glad I set the wheels of change in motion with that very small first step because it has led me to where I am today. 56. These activities not only make learning English fun but also help us improve our language skills in a practical context. Since joining the club, I’ve gained a lot. I’ve become more fluent in English and can now express myself more confidently. I’ve also made many friends who share the same passion for English. Our club has truly become a second home for me, where I can learn, grow, and have fun. So, don’t hesitate! Come and join us, and let’s embark on this exciting journey of learning English together! 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
