For a quick introduction of the Wonders, this text presents only four of the historic sites. Giza Necropolis of Egypt Located about 12 miles from Cairo, Giza Necropolis features (以……为特色) the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx of Giza and is about over 4,500 years old. It is easy to take public transportation from Cairo but families should consider booking a personal guide or group trip from a tour operator such as Go Travel Egypt or Viator. The Great Wall of China With a history dating back to 476 BCE, the Great Wall stretches (绵延) 13,170 miles across China. The most famous and most visited section of the Great Wall is Badaling. A number of tour operators can be found in Beijing, with recommendations including Viator, The Great Wall Hiking and Discover Beijing Tours. Admission (门票费) to Badaling is just 45 Chinese Yuan(about $7.50) but a guided tour from Beijing starts at around $75. Petra of Jordan Rediscovered in 1812, Petra was the fourth century BCE capital of the Nabataean empire. Known for its intricate (错综复杂的) carvings into a sandstone mountain, Petra was a business center, located between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. Tours to the Lost City can be arranged in Israel or from Anman, the capital and largest city of Jordan 150 miles to the north. Colosseum of Italy Located in the ancient center of Rome, the Colosseum started to be built in 72 CE and was finished in 80 CE. Till today, the Colosseum is still the largest amphitheater (圆形竞技场) in the world. Guided tours are easy to find from a number of operators but tickets for selfguided tours can be bought on site for 12 euro. 【词汇积累】 · New Seven Wonders of the World:世界新七大奇迹 · historic sites:历史遗迹 · Necropolis:墓地,公墓 · feature:以…… 【词汇延伸】 · 与 “奇迹” 相关词汇:wonder(奇迹), marvel(奇迹,令人惊叹的事物), masterpiece(杰作,代表作,可用于形容奇迹般的建筑等), phenomenon(现象,也可指奇迹般的现象)。 · 与 “历史” 相关词汇:history(历史), historical(历史的,有关历史的), archaeology(考古学), heritage(遗产,可指历史文化遗产), antique(古董,古物)。 · 与 “旅游” 相关词汇:tour(旅行,旅游), travel(旅行), journey(旅程), sightseeing(观光,游览), itinerary(行程安排), tour guide(导游)。 1.A visit to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World can be one of the most exciting and unforgettable vacations you and your family can take. 0. 分析:句子的主语是 “A visit”,“to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World” 是介词短语作后置定语,修饰 “visit”。“can be” 是谓语,“one of the most exciting and unforgettable vacations” 是表语,“you and your family can take” 是省略了关系代词 “that” 的定语从句,修饰 “vacations”。 0. 2.Located about 12 miles from Cairo, Giza Necropolis features the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx of Giza and is about over 4,500 years old. 0. 3.With a history dating back to 476 BCE, the Great Wall stretches 13,170 miles across China. 0. 分析:“With a history dating back to 476 BCE” 是介词短语作状语,其中 “dating back to 476 BCE” 是现在分词短语作后置定语,修饰 “history”。 4.Rediscovered in 1812, Petra was the fourth - century BCE capital of the Nabataean empire. 句子主语是 “Petra”,“was” 是谓语,“the fourth - century BCE capital of the Nabataean empire” 是表语,介绍佩特拉古城的历史地位。 5.Till today, the Colosseum is still the largest amphitheater in the world. 0. 分析:“Till today” 是时间状语,句子主语是 “the Colosseum”,“is” 是谓语,“the largest amphitheater in the world” 是表语,其中 “in the world” 是介词短语作后置定语,修饰 “amphitheater”。 0. 高考真题链接 (2021·新高考全国Ⅰ卷·高考真题)When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America, the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife. Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely. Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources. Millions of waterfowl (水禽) were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen. Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat. In 1934, with the passage of the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act (Act), an increasingly concerned nation took firm action to stop the destruction of migratory (迁徙的) waterfowl and the wetlands so vital to their survival. Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and over must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. The very first Federal Duck Stamp was designed by J.N. “Ding” Darling, a political cartoonist from Des Moines, lowa, who at that time was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as Director of the Bureau of Biological Survey. Hunters willingly pay the stamp price to ensure the survival of our natural resources. About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System — a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come. Since 1934, better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat. Little wonder the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated. 28.What was a cause of the waterfowl population decline in North America? A.Loss of wetlands. B.Popularity of water sports. C.Pollution of rivers. D.Arrival of other wild animals. 29.What does the underlined word “decimate” mean in the first paragraph? A.Acquire. B.Export. C.Destroy. D.Distribute. 30.What is a direct result of the Act passed in 1934? A.The stamp price has gone down. B.The migratory birds have flown away. C.The hunters have stopped hunting. D.The government has collected money. 31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.The Federal Duck Stamp Story B.The National Wildlife Refuge System C.The Benefits of Saving Waterfowl D.The History of Migratory Bird Hunting 1.原句:When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America, the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife. 结构拆解: “When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America” 是时间状语从句,“when” 引导从句,“the explorers”(探险家)是从句主语,“set foot upon”(踏上)是谓语,“the continent of North America”(北美洲大陆)是宾语 。 主句是 “the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife” ,“the skies and lands”(天空和大地)是主语,“were alive with”(充满着;洋溢着)是谓语结构,“an astonishing variety of wildlife”(种类惊人的野生动物)是宾语 。 2.原句:Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever - increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat. 结构拆解: 主句 “Millions of acres of wetlands were dried” ,“Millions of acres of wetlands”(数百万英亩的湿地)是主语,“were dried”(被抽干)是谓语 。 “to feed and house the ever - increasing populations” 是动词不定式短语作目的状语,说明湿地被抽干的目的是 “养活并安置不断增长的人口” ;“greatly reducing waterfowl habitat” 是现在分词短语作结果状语,表明湿地被抽干后 “大大减少了水禽栖息地” 这一结果 。 3.原句:About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System — a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come. 结构拆解: 主句 “About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund” ,“About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar”(每张鸭票收入中的约 98 美分)是主语,“goes directly into”(直接进入)是谓语,“the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund”(候鸟保护基金)是宾语 。 “to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System” 是动词不定式短语作目的状语,说明资金进入基金的目的是 “购买湿地和野生动物栖息地,将其纳入国家野生动物保护区系统” 。 “a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come” 是同位语结构,“a fact” 作前面内容的同位语,“that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come” 是定语从句,修饰 “a fact” ,其中 “this land will be protected and available for all generations to come” 是宾语从句,作 “ensures” 的宾语 。 (法律等的)通过; passage of the Act (法案的通过 ) migratory /ˈmaɪɡrətəri/ adj. What was a cause of the waterfowl population decline in North America?” Millions of acres of wetlands were dried... greatly reducing waterfowl habitat.” What does the underlined word ‘decimate’ mean in the first paragraph?” 操作步骤: 找到 “decimate” 所在句子 “Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely. Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources.”。 What is a direct result of the Act passed in 1934?” 操作步骤: 找到与 1934 年法案相关内容,即第二段 “Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters... must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp.” 及第三段 “Since 1934, better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund...”。 Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?” Passage 1 (24-25高二下·江西抚州·期末)When Stella Olsen was 12 years old, her father presented her with a choice. Her family owned sled dogs, which could take a lot of work. Her father asked her if she’d like to take care of the dogs. “If you don’t want to take care of them, we have to destroy them,” Olsen recalls him saying. She immediately sprung into action, hunting and fishing to feed the dogs. Now, 14 years later, she’s raising sled dogs of her own. Her dogs are like family. For generations, Greenlanders have relied on sled dogs for hunting. But the number of sled dogs has been cut in half over the last 20 years. “One of the contributors is that the traditional hunting culture is changing,” Morten Meldgaard, a professor at the University of Greenland, said. Those who have long relied on dog sledding are also having to adapt to a warming climate. “Sea ice is not as widespread as it was earlier on. And so, the use of the sled dogs on the ice is limited,” he added. That means mushers (赶狗拉雪橇的人) like Olsen have to adapt to keep this tradition alive. She’s considering buying a sled with wheels to train her dogs, to account for the fact that there is less ice. “I’m not going to quit my dogs because of the weather but it’s really difficult,” she said. For her, it’s hard to put into words what it feels like to dogsled. “People always ask about how it used to be, but I can only tell it in my version because I live here and now,” she said. “Putting all of this into words will be key to preserving many of Greenland’s traditions,” says Manumina Lund Jensen, a PhD student at the University of Greenland. She’s working to preserve knowledge about dog sledding through research and by collecting oral histories. “That is the wisdom which we pass on to the younger generations,” she says. 1.Why did Olsen decide to look after the sled dogs? A.Because she valued sled dogs highly. B.Because her father forced her to do so. C.Because the dogs were easy to raise. D.Because she longed to sell them. 2.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A.Examples of climate change. B.Reasons for the decline of sled dogs. C.A brief introduction of Greenlanders’ life. D.The destructive effect of global warming. 3.What does Olsen think of preserving the tradition of dog sledding? A.Tiring. B.Expensive. C.Challenging. D.Risky. 4.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Scientific research on dog sledding has proved effective. B.Younger generations have lost interest in dogsled. C.Oral histories play a key role in preserving traditions. D.Climate change makes cultural preservation impossible. Passage 3 (24-25高二下·山东日照·期末)Ladakh, in the trans-Himalayas, with its vast, uninhabited and stunning landscapes, has fascinated me since my first visit 20 years ago. In 2011, my fifth time in Ladakh, the region’s raw beauty held an entirely different pull — one that seemed to hum with an ancient energy, a force I hadn’t noticed before. In the very bones of the land lay a collection of prehistoric carvings known as petroglyphs, the only remains of prehistoric human presence in the area. Seeing these carvings, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was witnessing something far deeper than I had imagined. There was an urgency to document them, as centuries-old carvings were being destroyed under the pressures of development. As a mountain enthusiast always seeking adventures, this attractive art drew me in, like a moth to a flame, beginning a decade-long journey of discovery and documentation. These markings were not just carvings on rock but reflections of an ancient culture we know little about. Despite tough living conditions, these huntergatherers still found ways to convey their beliefs and observations through highly stylized forms, reflecting the deep artistic desire that has always been a part of the human — long before the rise of civilized society. As artist and anthropologist Desmond Morris put it, “It is as if the human species were incapable of being artless regardless of material circumstances.” To bring these open-air art galleries to a wider audience, I wanted to create something that had not been attempted before by using specialized photography techniques with my focus being on distribution, styles and creative range. It was no small matter, given the vastness of Ladakh, my ambition to capture art from every region, the limited windows of opportunity, and the harsh conditions I faced. Not to mention, all my trips were personally funded. When the book — Speaking Stones: Rock Art of Ladakh — was named a finalist for the Banff Mountain Book Award in 2024, I was honored, but the recognition was secondary. My true reward was a deeper connection with time and nature through a vast unbroken string, binding us all together. 1.What drove the author to document the petroglyphs? A.The threat of regional progress. B.The appeal of amazing scenery. C.A search for thrilling experiences. D.A childhood bond with ancient art. 2.What can we learn from Morris’s quote in paragraph 3? A.Art is the mirror of nature. B.Art inspires human wisdom. C.Art is deeply rooted in humans. D.Art can’t exist without materials. 3.Which can best describe the process of creating the book? A.Systematic. B.Brain-tearing. C.Painstaking. D.Eventful. 4.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A.Tasting the Past: The Analysis of Petroglyph B.Written in Stone: Ladakh’s Timeless Artistry C.Guarding the Rocks: A Saver of Ladakh’s Heritage D.Carved by Time: A Record of Himalayan Geography Passage 4 (福建省宁德市2024-2025学年高二下学期期末质量检测英语测试)In Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, 58-year-old Guo Yingxiong is breathing new life into Hakka bamboo carving. In his workshops, the bamboo seems to come alive with his skilled hands-everyday scenes unfold, like a tea seller carrying his goods or young lovers sitting by the water. These creations represent more than art. They form a living bridge between the ancient art of Hakka bamboo carving and the modern world that Guo has upheld for over four decades. Bamboo carving has deep cultural roots. While its origins date back to the Six Dynasties period, the art was well received by people during the Tang Dynasty, before achieving its golden age during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when scholars praised bamboo for symbolizing strength and honesty. Song Dynasty Sushi wrote that he would rather dine without meat than live without bamboo. Among regional styles, Hakka bamboo carving stood out by mixing traditional calligraphy with creative designs. In 2010, it was listed as a provincial-level intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage in Jiangxi. Guo’s exposure to the art began young-he learned from his father, who taught him strict rules, like using only winter-cut bamboo and memorizing over 50 steps to prepare the material before carving. With tireless practices, he mastered various sculpting techniques, establishing himself as a pioneer in preserving and advancing Jiangxi’s carving heritage. To keep the tradition alive, Guo opened Ganzhou’s first Hakka bamboo carving workshop in 2017. There, he made custom pieces and taught students. One of his students, Han Lu, even started studying the craft’s history after being inspired by him. Besides, he also created smaller, cheaper items like bamboo bookmarks and mixed traditional skills with modem designs to attract younger people. Through such efforts, he hopes to secure a brighter future for the art, one careful cut at a time. 1.Why are Guo’s creations mentioned in Paragraph 1? A.To praise his remarkable carving skills. B.To highlight the art’s connection to daily life. C.To picture ancient and modern artistic styles. D.To stress his efforts to preserve the ancient art. 2.In which period did bamboo carving become popular? A.The Six Dynasties. B.The Tang Dynasty. C.The Ming Dynasty. D.The Song Dynasty. 3.What distinguished Hakka bamboo carving from other regional styles? A.Complex material preparations. B.The symbol of bamboo carving. C.Careful and strict practices for decades. D.A combination of tradition and innovation 4.How did Guo preserve bamboo carving? A.By teaching people calligraphy. B.By using only winter-cut bamboo. C.By getting young people involved in it. D.By studying its history with his students. Passage 5 (24-25高二下·湖北荆州·期末)April sees the return of Trenitalia’s direct train service between Paris and Milan. A.The Federal Duck Stamp Story B.The National Wildlife Refuge System C.The Benefits of Saving Waterfowl D.The History of Migratory Bird Hunting 【答案】28.A 29.C 30.D 31.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第一段“Millions of waterfowl were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen. Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat.(数百万只水禽被市场猎人和一些野心勃勃的运动员杀死。 故选A。 29. 根据第一段“Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely. Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources.(美洲原住民明智地保护了这些宝贵的自然资源。 根据最后一段“Since 1934, better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat.(自1934年以来,已有超过5亿美元投入该基金,用于购买500多万英亩的栖息地)”可知,自1934年通过法案,政府获得超过5亿美元,已经筹集了很多资金,以购买水禽栖息地。故选D。 31. 根据第二段“Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and over must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. 故选A。 1.原句:When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America, the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife. 根据第一段中““If you don’t want to take care of them, we have to destroy them,” Olsen recalls him saying. A.Tasting the Past: The Analysis of Petroglyph B.Written in Stone: Ladakh’s Timeless Artistry C.Guarding the Rocks: A Saver of Ladakh’s Heritage D.Carved by Time: A Record of Himalayan Geography 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.C 4.B 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第二段中“There was an urgency to document them, as centuries-old carvings were being destroyed under the pressures of development. 故选A项。 2. 根据第三段中Desmond Morris所说的话“It is as if the human species were incapable of being artless regardless of material circumstances. 根据最后一段中“It was no small matter, given the vastness of Ladakh, my ambition to capture art from every region, the limited windows of opportunity, and the harsh conditions I faced. Not to mention, all my trips were personally funded. A. 通读全文,尤其是第二段中“As a mountain enthusiast always seeking adventures, this attractive art drew me in, like a moth to a flame, beginning a decade-long journey of discovery and documentation. 和第三段中“These markings were not just carvings on rock but reflections of an ancient culture we know little about. Passage 4 (福建省宁德市2024-2025学年高二下学期期末质量检测英语测试)In Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, 58-year-old Guo Yingxiong is breathing new life into Hakka bamboo carving. Several years ago, I decided to go there for a visit. A local person offered to be my guide, which was a great 1 for me. One day, my guide turned off the 2 road and took me across a rough hillside instead. We picked our way carefully when, 3 , a Rafflesia (大王花) popped into my view among those stones. Oh, dear! More than pleased, I bent down and put my 4 inside the flower’s core to smell it. Nevertheless, to my surprise, it was only one of the 5 during the trip. As I 6 the end of my trip, there was still something I had yet to see. We planned to hunt for the most 7 creature there, the saltwater crocodile, which can 8 to a length of 6 meters or more.
