On October 11, 2025, the Ironman World Championship, one of the planet’s most difficult endurance (耐力) contests, started in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Over 1,600 athletes took part in a grueling test of spirit and body, facing a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full 26.2-mile marathon run. The intense Hawaiian heat, strong winds, and challenging uphill sections forced sixty competitors to drop out of the race. Yet, against these odds, 80-year-old Natalie Grabow not only finished but also secured her place in history as the oldest woman ever to complete this legendary event.
A triathlon (铁人三项) is the ultimate test of endurance, pushing athletes to their limits for hours on end. The Ironman World Championship represents the top level of this sport, known for its extreme difficulty. Natalie, an energetic grandmother, has now completed this challenge an impressive eleven times. Her achievement is even more remarkable considering she didn’t know how to swim until she was 59 years old.
Natalie’s athletic journey began long before this record. Growing up in an era when girls were often sidelined as cheerleaders rather than celebrated as athletes, she found her way to sports later in life. She played tennis while raising her children and took up running when she returned to work as a software developer. Her interest in triathlons was inspired by running partners, who believed cross-training helped reduce the risk of injury. Because she was unable to swim, Natalie made an important decision to learn. It was a slow and challenging process, but her determination led to gradual improvement.
Her hard work paid off. In 2005, she competed in her first half-Ironman race. By her early sixties, she had qualified for the Ironman World Championship. This year, she tackled the exact same demanding course as every other athlete, under the same tough conditions. As the only participant in her age group, she never entertained the thought of quitting. With steady determination, she conquered the course in 16 hours, 45 minutes, and 26 seconds.

To address the growing concern of overtourism, Copenhagen has launched CopenPay, an innovative program that transforms responsible behavior into currency. This initiative encourages visitors to make sustainable (可持续的) choices in exchange for free rewards, allowing them to enjoy the city’s culture while minimizing their environmental impact.
Developed by the city’s tourism organization, Wonderful Copenhagen, CopenPay creatively rewards visitors for a range of eco-friendly actions. These include cycling or walking instead of driving, participating in clean-up activities in green spaces or canals, volunteering at urban farms, or choosing plant-based meals. Participants simply show proof of their activities, such as photos or receipts, to claim their rewards. Notably, the program operates on a trust-based honor system, reflecting Denmark’s deeply rooted culture of trustworthiness.
The initiative features participation from over 90 local partners who offer a diverse range of rewards. For instance, collecting trash can earn a free boat tour with Green Kayak, an environmental organization, where participants might gather several kilos of waste, turning sightseeing into a meaningful environmental action. Cycling to a museum like the National Gallery could be rewarded with a free coffee, while helping with weeding at an organic urban farm might secure a free drink. The program also actively promotes low-carbon travel — visitors who arrive by train instead of plane receive free bike rentals through a partner app.
Maddy Novich, a visitor from New York City, participated in the CopenPay program. “I think it’s a fantastic way to motivate tourists to engage in responsible and eco-friendly behavior,” said Novich. “I especially love that it encourages people to visit less well-known places like the beer garden with trash-picking activities, which might otherwise be missed. It definitely makes me more mindful of how I move through urban spaces as a guest.”
Copenhagen’s well-developed bike network and widespread recycling habits provide a perfect groundwork for such a program. Its effectiveness is demonstrated by a significant 29% increase in bike rentals driven by the program, showing how these rewards can successfully change visitor behavior.
In line with Copenhagen’s ambitious goal to become one of the world’s first carbon-neutral (碳中和) capitals, CopenPay demonstrates how cities can turn the challenge of mass tourism into a positive force.

A hybrid (混合) electric airplane has successfully completed a test flight in Southern California. The flight demonstrated a new type of electric motor (马达) system that uses a special material to make the plane lighter. This reduction in weight allows hybrid planes to fly longer distances.
The aircraft, a modified (改装) Cessna 337, uses both a traditional gas engine and an electric motor. The key improvement is a new power control unit, called an inverter, built with silicon carbide (碳化硅). This material is more efficient than the common silicon found in most electronics.
Researchers from the University of Arkansas developed this experimental inverter with companies Ampaire and Wolfspeed. The U. S. Department of Energy provided money for the project. The successful test is a big step forward for creating more energy-efficient airplanes. Alan Mantooth, the lead researcher, proudly said, “We were the first university to do this for a hybrid electric aircraft.”
So, why is silicon carbide better? Silicon, used in phones and computers, wastes some energy as heat every time it switches on and off. Silicon carbide can switch much faster, which greatly improves efficiency. This high efficiency also means that other parts, like wires and magnetic components, can be made smaller and lighter. For airplanes, where every kilogram counts, this is a major advantage. Chris Farnell, another scientist on the team, gave a simple comparison: “Imagine a race car with a big, heavy engine. What if you could get that same power from something that fits in your hand?”
However silicon carbide has been expensive to produce. But as production improves, the cost is going down. The smaller and lighter systems are already attracting car companies because they can make electric vehicles better and cheaper.
Building electrical systems for planes is difficult. They must handle strong vibrations (振动), the shock of landing, and changing air conditions. The team’s success proves they can manage these challenges — and in order to push this technology further, the research team will open a new lab this fall to continue studying silicon carbide chips.
12. What is the main purpose of the test flight?
A. To modify a traditional Cessna 337. B. To demonstrate silicon’s energy efficiency.
C. To check a new inverter system. D. To reduce the cost of airplane production.
13. Why does Chris Farnell mention the race car?
A. To compare cars with hybrid planes. B. To show race cars need light engines.
C. To prove engines can be made small. D. To explain silicon carbide’s advantages.
14. What do we know about silicon carbide?
A. It is attractive to car producers. B. It wastes much energy as heat.
C. It is widely used in electric cars. D. It is heavier than common silicon.
15. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. Electric cars will use plane systems. B. Hybrid planes have replaced gas planes.
C. Silicon carbide may reshape transport. D. It is simple to study silicon carbide chips.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. C

Life’s journey is rarely smooth. Just like learning to ride a bike — you fall, pick yourself up, and try again—most goals in life come with obstacles. Pursuing dreams like becoming a professional athlete or publishing a book often involves setbacks. But as the saying goes, “____16____.” Failure isn’t the end; it’s a stepping stone to success — if you know how to turn it around. Here are four key ways to transform failure into progress.
One key way is to stay positive. A positive mindset helps you accept disappointment and move forward. Recognize that not everyone wins every race or passes every test. ____17____.
Another important step is to learn from your failures. ____18____. Instead, they learn from them, analyze what went wrong, spot specific errors, and use these insights to avoid repeating them. Every failure is a lesson that brings you closer to success.
____19____. This means finding joy in what you’re doing — something that drives long-term effort. People who focus on the journey, not just the end result, burn out less easily. So celebrate small wins along the way; this will keep you motivated even when progress feels slow.
Lastly, be flexible to turn failure around. Inflexibility holds you back: if one approach fails, don’t hold fast to it. ____20____. Flexibility lets you recover from failure by finding fresh paths to your goal.
Remember Thomas Edison’s famous words: I didn’t fail 10,000 times — I found 10,000 ways that didn’t work. Failure is never a sign to quit; it’s a reminder to grow, adjust, and keep going.
A. It’s also important to be process-minded
B. If you have never failed, you have never lived
C. Successful people and businesses don’t avoid failures
D. Stay focused on your original goal when facing difficulties
E. It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop
F. Rethink the problem, explore new solutions, and adapt your plans
G. This way of thinking will inspire you to try again instead of giving up
【答案】16. B 17. G 18. C 19. A 20. F

The Impact of Modern Media on Teenagers
Modern media has become an indispensable part of teenagers’ daily lives. Undoubtedly, modern media brings many benefits. It offers us easy access to a wealth of information and knowledge through videos, apps, and online courses. Furthermore, it enables us not only to express ourselves but also to stay connected with friends. However, there are downsides. For instance, the spread of false information can mislead young minds, and excessive use — especially of short videos — may lead to addiction, affecting our academic performance and health.
To make the best use of modern media, we should learn to think critically, manage our screen time wisely, and seek proper guidance from parents and teachers.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Three weeks ago, at the age of 15, I moved to a small New York town with my dad — he’d gotten a new job at an engineering firm, so we had to leave our old neighborhood, our favorite diner, and even my childhood music corner behind.
At my new school everything felt like an unsolvable puzzle: the winding hallways made me late for class twice, classmates grouped together, chatting about inside jokes that went over my head, and the cafeteria served tuna sandwiches that tasted nothing like my mom’s homemade ones. I’d sit alone at the back table, picking at my food while watching others laugh, hoping someone might wave me over — but no one ever did.
Every morning, I got myself out of bed, staring at the unpacked boxes in my room and not looking forward to the day ahead. I’d walk into class, keep my eyes fixed on my desk, and never raise my hand — afraid that if I spoke, everyone would notice how “new” I was and how I didn’t belong. “It’s like I’m standing in a room with the lights off,” I said to my dad over dinner one night. “I just don’t know how to fit here.” School felt endless and lonely — until Dr. V came to the school two weeks later to teach choir (合唱课).
Dr. V didn’t make me feel like an outsider. In his first class, he handed me a sheet of folk songs — “Hope you love these,” he said with a smile — and saved a seat near the piano where I could easily follow the music. When the bell rang that Thursday, I stayed behind, folding my sheet music (乐谱) slowly. I didn’t want to head home to our empty living room, where the quiet felt like a reminder that nothing was “normal” yet.
The choir room’s double doors were next to the piano, where Dr. V was putting his music stand into a closet. As I walked toward the exit, Dr. V stood up. He didn’t say a word at first — just looking at me as if he could see the loneliness behind my eyes.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before I could say a quick “goodbye”, Dr. V said to me, “Just a second.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I got home, Dr. V’s words were still ringing in my ears.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Before I could say a “goodbye”, Dr. V said to me, “Just a second.” I looked at him in slight confusion. He stepped closer, leaning in slightly as he continued, “I know it’s hard being the new kid — everything feels unfamiliar. But I’ve been watching you in class. You listen carefully and try your best with the songs.” I was surprised by how much he cared about me, and a long-absent warmth settled in my heart. He paused and then patted my shoulder softly, “You’re doing better than you think. Give this town a little time. It’ll start to feel like yours soon.”
When I got home, Dr. V’s words were still ringing in my ears. I pulled the sheet music out of my bag, and I could almost feel the warmth of Dr. V’s words again. When my dad called me for dinner, I smiled — something I hadn’t done much since the move. “School was okay today,” I said, surprising myself. As I ate, my mind wandered to tomorrow’s choir class, and I found myself already looking forward to singing those folk songs. For the first time, the fear of being the newcomer didn’t feel so overwhelming.

4. What does “grueling” underlined in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. tough. B. Quite relaxing. C. Fairly simple. D. Pretty common.
5. What’s special about Natalie’s 2025 Ironman?
A. She taught others to swim. B. She dropped out due to heat.
C. She won the cheerleader award. D. She was the oldest female finisher.
6. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Injury risks of triathlons. B. Cheerleaders’ training methods.
C Natalie’s early sports experiences. D. Software developers’ daily work.
7. We can conclude from the text that Natalie ______.
A. quit her job to do triathlons B. stuck to goals despite difficulties
C. learned swimming in childhood D. relied on others’ help to succeed

The aircraft, a modified (改装的) Cessna 337, uses both a traditional gas engine and an electric motor.
However, silicon carbide has been expensive to produce.

第二节(满分25分)
At my new school, everything felt like an unsolvable puzzle: the winding hallways made me late for class twice, classmates grouped together, chatting about inside jokes that went over my head, and the cafeteria served tuna sandwiches that tasted nothing like my mom’s homemade ones.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before I could say a quick “goodbye”, Dr. V said to me, “Just a second.”

When I got home, Dr. V’s words were still ringing in my ears.
