Many English learners like to write long sentences in their compositions(作文). They want to
impress(留下印象) others with their vocabulary and mastery of grammar. But remember, "wordy"
sentences, or sentences that are unnecessarily long, can stop us from communicating clearly. In a good
sentence, every word should serve a purpose and appear in the right place.
Let's look at an example of a wordy sentence: "There is recently a lively, ongoing discussion among many
university teachers and other experts who study human nature, during which arguments are being presented about
what it means that so many young people who live in our society today are so interested in stories about
superheroes." Can you easily understand this 46 - word sentence? Well, you're not alone if you can't. In one
interview, only 25 percent of people understood it.
Now, compare it with this simpler sentence: "University teachers are discussing why young people like
superhero stories." See? It's much easier to understand and still shows the same meaning.
Here are some tips to help you avoid wordy sentences.
· Tip 1: Use active verbs instead of passive ones. For example, say "The family bought a new car." instead of
· "A new car was bought by the family."
· Tip 2: Avoid wordy phrases. Instead of "as a matter of fact", just use "in fact".
· Tip 3: Put sentences together when possible. For example, instead of "Ann likes the book and her best friend
· Margot likes it too", say "Both Ann and her best friend Margot enjoy the book."
By following these tips, you can make your writing clearer and more enjoyable for your readers.
51. Why do many English learners prefer to write long sentences in their compositions?
A. To get higher scores in their writing.
B. To help their readers better understand them.
C. To show their vocabulary and grammar skills.
D. To increase the number of words in compositions.
52. What is the main problem with "wordy" sentences according to the passage?
A. They are not creative at all. B. They are very difficult to write.
C. They are easy to make mistakes. D. They are unclear for communication.
53. According to the passage, what percent of people couldn't easily understand the 46 - word sentence?
54. Which of the following is an example of Tip 2?
A. Use "can" instead of "have the ability to"
B. Use "have the ability to" instead of "can"
C. Use "Jim read the book." instead of "The book was read by Jim."
D. Use "The book was read by Jim," instead of "Jim read the book."
55. Who is the passage written for?
A. English experts. B. Language learners. C. Parents. D. Teachers.

There are lots of ideas online about ways to keep your car cool in the summer when you're parking it. No one likes getting into a hot car after a long day! Some people always park their cars under a tree, put up sun shades(太阳挡板) on the windscreen, cover the seats with beach towels or even put a car cover over the whole car.
But Nissan has a new idea, and the best part is, once you have it, you don't need to do anything. The Japanese car maker has been testing a kind of special "cool paint" that it says could make a car's roof cooler by 12 degrees Celsius(摄氏度). It could also make the inside of the car five degrees Celsius cooler. A cooler car is more comfortable to get into, of course, but it's also cheaper to run if you don't need to use the air conditioning(空调).
The paint was developed with a Chinese company called Radi - Cool, which works with other Japanese businesses to make sun hats and parasols that feel cooler. A parasol is a light umbrella used as protection from the sun.
One possible problem with Nissan's paint is that it's six times thicker than common paint. The company's researchers are working on making it thinner so it can be used more easily on as many cars as possible. For now, the cool paint is still in the test period but Susumu Miura from Nissan said his dream was to create cooler cars without using so much energy.
Toyota has also been trying out a kind of cooling paint, but it has focused on using colors that refract (折射) the sun's rays, to make them change direction.
56. According to the passage, what do people usually do to keep their cars cool?
A. They keep all the windows open.
B. They park their cars in the garage.
C. They use special paint on their cars.
D. They leave their cars under a tree.
57. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. The different ways to keep cars cool.
B. The introduction of Nissan's cool paint.
C. The advantages of using cool paint.
D. The problems with usual paint.
58. From the passage, we can infer that Nissan's cool paint ______.
A. is easy to make B. is as thin as common paint
C. may help save energy D. will be widely used soon
59. Which of the following shows a "parasol"?
60. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The problems of car paint and how to solve them.
B. Different traditional ways to keep a car cool in summer.
C. The development of a new kind of paint to keep cars cool.
D. A comparison between two car companies' cooling technologies.

The 15th National Games started on November 9, 2025, in Guangzhou. It's a historic event because it's the
first time Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao have hosted the games together. President Xi Jinping came
to the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center and announced the opening of the games.
This National Games is very large in scale(规模). A total of 19 cities in the Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao
Greater Bay Area work together to host it. Top athletes from all over the country gather here to compete, and many
ordinary people also take part in sports activities.
The opening ceremony(开幕式) on the evening of November 9 was wonderful. It mixed traditional Lingnan
culture with modern technology. There were lion dances with virtual(虚拟的) reality effects, Yingge dances with
holographic projections(全息投影), and dragon boat races shown through augmented reality(增强现实). Famous
places like Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor, Macao's Ruins of St. Paul's and Guangzhou's Canton Tower were also
