Thirty-nine-year-old Liang Jiangbo, who became the first blind person to earn a postgraduate degree from Tsinghua University last month, said he planned to devote himself to helping more disabled people better integrate into society.
Born in Bengbu, Anhui province, Liang said his disability made his educational journey tough and uneven. His parents spared no effort to give him the chance to attend a regular school at ten, where his peers treated him as a normal student. Later, he went to a special school and his classmates tried to dissuade him from trying to get into a regular university and instead encouraged him to learn massage (按摩) and think about running a shop to make a living. He was admitted to Beijing Union University in 2006, where he majored in acupuncture and massage therapy. There he also made sure to take part in social activities to build better connections. He said that applying for a place in the social work master’s program at Tsinghua was not a sudden act. It was his dream school when he was a child.
However, there were no study materials for visually-impaired people wanting to prepare for the postgraduate examination. He had to convert the materials into speech-recognition formats and spot possible mistakes during the format conversion process. After actively preparing for almost a year, Liang took the postgraduate examination. As a disabled student, he was allowed to extend time as it took longer to read the Braille (盲文). He was thrilled when he received his letter of admission from Tsinghua in June 2022.
When studying at Tsinghua, his classmates treated him discreetly at the very beginning as they had no idea how to communicate with and get on with disabled people. But things changed after they became more familiar, and sometimes he might even do them a favor. He said “Those changes are the reason I chose the major as I wish for people with disabilities to get proactively involved in some social activities and community life. I hope my story can be inspirational, as I’ve proved that any dream can be reached. Human beings are a diverse bunch and we disabled are part of that diversity.”
4. What can we know about Liang Jiangbo from the first two paragraphs?
A. He experienced a smooth educational journey.
B. He joined in social activities to enjoy himself.
C. He wanted to study at Tsinghua from an early age.
D. He was the first disabled to earn a postgraduate degree.
5. What problem did he meet facing the postgraduate examination?
A. Disturbance of social activities.
B. Lack of support from his parents.
C. Insufficient time in the examination.
D. Absence of study materials in Braille.
6. Which one of the following statements is in line with the passage?
A. He majored in acupuncture at Tsinghua.
B. Initially, his classmates at Tsinghua treated him cautiously.
C. Students at special schools favored Liang’s dream of further study.
D. The shift of his classmates’ attitude at Tsinghua influenced him slightly.
7. What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. A blind graduate’s tough educational journey.
B. A disabled person aiming to integrate into society.
C. A blind Tsinghua graduate aiming to inspire others.
D. The first blind to graduate from Tsinghua University.

Last week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent an email to his employees warning that artificial intelligence could displace them. “We will need fewer people doing some of the current jobs, but more people doing other types of jobs,” he wrote.
Nothing in his email was shocking. Technological advances as far back as the printing machine have got rid of some jobs while creating many others. The real danger is that too much reliance on AI could lead to a generation of young people unequipped for the jobs of the future because they have never learned to think creatively or critically.
The brain continues to develop and mature into one’s mid-20s, but like a muscle, it needs to be exercised and challenged to grow stronger. Technology, especially AI, can block this development by doing the work that the brain is expected to do.
A study last year analyzed brain electrical activity of university students during the activities of handwriting and typing. Those who were handwriting showed higher levels of neural(神经) activation across more brain regions. “Whenever handwriting movements are included as a learning strategy, more of the brain gets stimulated, resulting in the formation of more complex neural network connectivity,” the researchers noted. “However, most students in colleges and many in high schools use AI tools to take notes and summarize lectures.”
Why commit information to memory when AI tools can provide answers at our fingertips? For one thing, the brain can’t draw connections between ideas that aren’t there. Nothing comes from nothing. Creativity doesn’t happen unless the brain is engaged.
College and high-school students also increasingly use AI tools to write papers, perform mathematical proofs, and create computer code. That means they don’t learn how to think through, express or defend ideas.
“Why hire a brainless bachelor’s degree holder for a job that an AI tool can do at lower costs and with no complaint?” Andy Jassy asked by the end of the letter.
8. What is the author’s real concern?
A. Human beings will be replaced by AI. B. Big companies are too eager to adopt AI.
C. New jobs can’t be created fast enough. D. We are losing our ability to think properly.
9. What did the researchers find in their study?
A AI tools were wisely used by students.
B. Students could benefit more from typing.
C. Handwriting was a superior learning strategy.
D. The brain had to be challenged to stay healthy.
10. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A The convenience of AI tools. B. The need to challenge our brain.
C. A function of the neural network. D. A way to memorize information.
11. What does Andy Jassy imply in his letter?
A. Amazon needs creative engineers. B. Amazon will cut its workers’ salary.
C. Employees should not complain. D. Bachelor’s degree holders are preferred.

Butter made from air instead of cows? A California-based startup claims to have worked out a complex process that eliminates the need for the animals while making its dairy-free alternative taste just as good.
Savor, backed by the Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, has been experimenting with creating dairy-free alternatives to ice-cream, cheese, and milk by utilizing (利用) a thermo chemical process that allows it to build fat molecules, creating chains of carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen. The company has now announced a new animal-free butter alternative.
Reducing meat and dairy consumption is one of the key ways that humanity can reduce its environmental impact, as livestock production is a significant source of greenhouse gases, and Savor says its products will have a significantly lower carbon footprint than animal-based ones. The “butter” could potentially come in at less than 0.8g CO2 equivalent per calorie. The standard climate footprint of real unsalted butter with 80% fat is approximately 2.4g CO2 equivalent per calorie.
Kathleen Alexander, Savor’s chief executive, said: “We are currently pre-commercial and working through regulatory approval to be able to sell our butter. We are not expecting to be able to move forward with any kind of sales until at least 2025.”
Meat and dairy alternatives have become more and more popular in recent years, but some fall short in terms of flavour. Savor says the flavour of its butter is more exact. The question now is whether buyers will take to such synthetic fats. Getting people to give up their favourite dairy and meat items for more “experimental” foods may pose a challenge.
Advocating for the initiative in an online blog post, Gates wrote: “The idea of switching to lab-made fats and oils may seem strange at first. But their potential to significantly reduce our carbon footprint is huge. By making use of proven technologies and processes, we get one step closer to achieving our climate goals. The process doesn’t release any greenhouse gases, and it uses no farmland and less than a thousandth of the water that traditional agriculture does. And most importantly, it tastes really good-like the real thing, because chemically it is.”
12. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean in paragraph one?
A. Remove. B. Increase. C. Satisfy. D. Deepen.
13. Why does Savor choose to produce the dairy-free alternative?
A. To lessen energy. B. To reduce the cost.
C. To better its flavour. D. To lower carbon footprint.
14. What can we know about the current situation of the butter alternative?
A. It is well received by most people.
B. It has been produced on a large scale.
C. It hasn’t been approved to hit the market.
D. It contributes to the livestock production.
15. What is Bill Gates’ attitude towards dairy-free alternatives?
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving.

I am smaller than everyone else my age. Bigger kids at school sometimes bump into me or step on my toes for not seeing me. At the playground, little kids even try to boss me around.
I used to try to make myself taller. I hung from the tree in our backyard to stretch out my limbs. I even ate my vegetables — all of them — but I never seemed to grow. “Don’t worry.” Mom said “Being small has its benefits.” Really? I’d never noticed any.
One day, Mrs. Alvarez told the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines before the audition, but I never got a chance to deliver them. As soon as I walked onstage, Mrs. Alvarez cried out, “Sophie! You’ll be perfect as the elf! You’re just the right size for the costume.”
When the auditions were finished, Mom was waiting outside for me. “Mrs. Alvarez made me an elf,” I grumbled. “I don’t want to be in the play any more.” Patting my head, Mom comforted me that I would be the best elf in the play. I nodded reluctantly.
In the play’s last scene, the main character finds a box under a giant mushroom. When she opens it, a dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals. He liked all the kids, but he seemed to like me best.
Unexpectedly, something dramatic happened on the night of the show. When the box was opened, Prince jumped out as planned. He jumped into the giant mushroom, though, which fell over. Then he leaped off the stage and disappeared underneath it. Mrs. Alvarez called him, but he whimpered and refused to come out. The lights came on in the theater, and the audience started to fidget (坐立不安) in their seats. The entire class gathered at the edge of the stage.
“How are we going to get him out of there?” Mrs. Alvarez asked.

Finally I came out with the dog in my arms.

A. AI tools were wisely used by students.
B. Students could benefit more from typing.
C. Handwriting was a superior learning strategy.
D. The brain had to be challenged to stay healthy.
10. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. The convenience of AI tools.
D 9. C 10. B 11. A

根据第二段“The real danger is that too much reliance on AI could lead to a generation of young people unequipped for the jobs of the future because they have never learned to think creatively or critically.(真正的危险在于,过度依赖人工智能可能会导致年轻一代无法胜任未来的工作,因为他们从未学会创造性或批判性地思考)”可知,作者真正担心的是我们正在失去正确思考的能力。
根据第四段“Those who were handwriting showed higher levels of neural activation across more brain regions.(那些手写的人在更多的大脑区域表现出更高水平的神经激活)”以及“Whenever handwriting movements are included as a learning strategy, more of the brain gets stimulated, resulting in the formation of more complex neural network connectivity (当手写动作被作为一种学习策略时,大脑的更多部分会受到刺激,从而形成更复杂的神经网络连接)”可知,手写的人在更多的大脑区域表现出更高水平的神经激活,当手写动作被作为一种学习策略时,大脑的更多部分会受到刺激,从而形成更复杂的神经网络连接,由此可知研究人员发现手写是一种更优越的学习策略。
根据第五段“Why commit information to memory when AI tools can provide answers at our fingertips? For one thing, the brain can’t draw connections between ideas that aren’t there. Nothing comes from nothing. Creativity doesn’t happen unless the brain is engaged (当人工智能工具触手可及就能提供答案时,为什么还要把信息记在脑子里呢?一方面,大脑无法在不存在的想法之间建立联系。无中不能生有。除非大脑参与其中,否则创造力不会产生)”可知,该段主要讨论了即使有AI工具,我们仍需让大脑参与思考、锻炼大脑的必要性,即挑战大脑的需求。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Why hire a brainless bachelor’s degree holder for a job that an AI tool can do at lower costs and with no complaint?(为什么要雇佣一个没有头脑的学士学位持有者去做一份人工智能工具能以更低成本、毫无怨言完成的工作呢?)” 故选A项。

A 13. D 14. C 15. B

“draw sb. to sth.” 故填to。
故填the。
分析句子可知,设空处引导定语从句,先行词为“bamboo”(指物),从句“has grown for more than three years”缺少主语,故用关系代词“that/which”引导定语从句,修饰限定“female bamboo”。故填that/which。
根据句意可知,“painted and decorated with colorful fabric”的目的是“完成龙的外观”,不定式“to complete”作目的状语,符合逻辑。故填to complete。
故填has been preserved。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an inspiring event that took place at my school last week. Several outstanding graduates who are now studying at top universities came back to talk to us about their experiences.
They mainly shared two things: first, how to prepare for the college entrance exams effectively, including study methods and time management tips; second, what university life is really like — from campus activities to choosing a major. As a senior facing the exams, I found their advice extremely helpful. It eased some of my anxiety and motivated me to focus on my goals. I feel more confident now and realize that hard work truly pays off.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

I am smaller than everyone else my age. Bigger kids at school sometimes bump into me or step on my toes for not seeing me. At the playground, little kids even try to boss me around.
I used to try to make myself taller. I hung from the tree in our backyard to stretch out my limbs. I even ate my vegetables — all of them — but I never seemed to grow. “Don’t worry.” Mom said, “Being small has its benefits.” Really?

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“How are we going to get him out of there?” Mrs. Alvarez asked. I looked down through the gap in the stage. It was dark and dusty, but I could see Prince shivering. He seemed scared. I thought about how he liked me best. “I can try,” I said quietly. Mrs. Alvarez looked at my small frame. “Oh, Sophie, I don’t know if you’ll fit.” But she had no other ideas. She helped me down. I took a deep breath and crawled into the dark space. It was tight, but I just fit. “Come here, Prince,” I whispered. He whimpered and crawled over, licking my face. I wrapped my arms around him and started backing out, pulling him with me. The audience held their breath.
Finally, I came out with the dog in my arms. A huge cheer went up from the crowd. Mrs. Alvarez hugged me, her eyes wet. “You were wonderful, Sophie! My hero!” The play continued, and while no one remembered much about the elf lines, everyone talked about how the smallest girl saved the show. Afterwards, Mom beamed with pride. “See?” she said, “Being small has its benefits.” For the first time, I believed her.
