Walking along the Tidal Basin (潮汐盆地) in Washington DC right now you’ll see an almost funny scene on the west side of the Jefferson Memorial: Admirers fighting to view a little cherry tree — Stumpy. They have left cards, roses and bottles of wine at its base. One of the enthusiasts even threatened to tie himself to the trunk to save the tree when the sad news came out: Stumpy will be among the roughly 150 trees to be removed from the Tidal Basin as part of a three-year project to repair the site’s sinking seawalls.
Stumpy is about 25 years old. It didn’t quite enter the public’s imagination until 2020, when a tourist posted a picture and showed Stumpy’s survival in the challenging environment. “There’s almost no way that the tree should still be alive. The trunk is entirely hollowed out and it has just three branches,” the post read. “Yet, it puts out these beautiful flowers.”
After that post, people began to notice Stumpy more. Then, in 2023, people were literally lining up to get pictures taken. “However, the fever has risen to a completely new level this year,” says Kevin Ambrose who photographed the tree long before it got its name and later wrote an article for the Washington Post titled Stumpy Steals the Hearts of Thousands at the Tidal Basin. “It’s sad to see it leave. But nature has the circle of life. Trees grow and die.”
“We have considered replanting it somewhere that doesn’t flood,” says National Park Service (NPS) spokesman Mike Litterst. “But we would probably do far more damage to it if we tried to move it than if we just allow it to remain in place due to its extremely weakened condition.”
But people can be relieved to hear a piece of good news: To preserve Stumpy’s memory, NPS will take cuttings from Stumpy to produce genetically (基因) identical trees that will be planted around the Tidal Basin once the seawall is restored.
4. Why do most people gather around Stumpy this year?
A. To visit the Jefferson Memorial. B. To say goodbye to a beloved tree.
C. To stop the cutting of the forest. D. To draw attention to the seawalls.
5. What did the 2020 post stress about Stumpy?
A. Its strong life force. B. Its broken branches.
C. Its strong trunk. D. Its hard living condition.
6. What does Kevin Ambrose think of the removing of Stumpy?
A. Unreasonable. B. Inspiring. C. Harmful. D. Understandable.
7. How will National Park Service deal with Stumpy?
A. By replanting it somewhere.
B. By replacing it with a different tree.
C. By preserving its DNA and reproducing it.
D. By providing proper medical treatment to it.

Even if you haven’t held a conversation with Siri or Alexa, you’ve likely encountered a chatbot (聊天机器人) online. They often appear in a chat window that pops up with a friendly greeting: Thank you for visiting our site. How can I help you today? Depending on the site, the chatbot is programmed to respond accordingly and even ask follow-up questions.
Chatbots communicate through speech or text. Both rely on artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning and natural language processing (NLP). NLP is a branch of artificial intelligence that teaches machines to read, analyze and interpret human language. This technology gives chatbots a baseline for understanding language structure and meaning. It, in essence, allows the computer to understand what you are asking and how to properly respond.
With developments in deep learning, chatbots can interpret more complexities in language and improve the dynamic nature of conversation between human and machine. Essentially, a chatbot tries to match what you’ve asked to an intention that it understands. The more a chatbot communicates with you, the more it understands and the more it learns to communicate like you and others with similar questions. Your positive responses reinforce its answers, and then it uses those answers again.
From customer service chatbots online to personal assistants in our homes, chatbots have started to enter our lives. In almost every industry, companies are using chatbots to help customers answer simple questions and direct people to the relevant points of contact. Personal assistants like Siri and Alexa are designed to respond to a wide range of scenarios (场景) and inquiries, from current weather and news updates to personal calendars, music selections and random questions.
8. Why does the author mention Siri and Alexa in paragraph 1?
A. To give examples of chatbots. B. To show where to find a chatbot.
C. To explain how to use a chatbot. D. To compare different chatbots.
9. What is the technical basis of chatbots?
A. Machine learning. B. Data transmission.
C. Social interaction. D. Natural language processing.
10. What does the underlined word “reinforce” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Inspire. B. Strengthen. C. Organize. D. Match.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The future trend of chatbots. B. The problems of chatbots.
C. The applications of chatbots. D. The effects of chatbots.
D
When stressed out, many of us turn to junk food for comfort. But new University of Colorado Boulder research suggests this strategy may have the opposite effect. The study found that in animals, a high-fat diet destroys resident gut (肠道) bacteria, changes behavior and, through a complex pathway connecting the gut to the brain, influences brain chemicals in ways that fuel anxiety.
“Everyone knows that these are not healthy foods, but we tend to think about them only in terms of a little weight gain,” said lead author Lowry. “If you understand that they also impact your brain in a way that can promote anxiety, you’ll realize that makes the risk even higher.” Lowry’s team divided adolescent rats into two groups: Half got a standard diet of about 11% fat for nine weeks; the others got a high-fat diet of 45% fat, consisting mostly of saturated (饱和) fat from animal products.
After nine weeks, the animals underwent behavioral tests. When compared to the former group, the group eating a high-fat diet, not surprisingly, gained weight. But the animals also showed significantly less diversity of gut bacteria. Generally speaking, more bacterial diversity is associated with better health, Lowry explained.
The high-fat diet group also showed higher expression of three genes involved in production and signaling of the neurotransmitter serotonin (神经递质血清素), which is associated with stress and anxiety. While serotonin is often billed as a “feel-good brain chemical,” Lowry notes that it can lead to anxiety-like responses in animals.
“To think that just a high-fat diet could change expression of these genes in the brain is extraordinary,” said Lowry. “The high-fat group essentially had a high anxiety state in their brain.”
Lowry stresses that not all fats are bad, and that healthy fats like those found in fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds can be good for the brain. His advice is: Eat as many different kinds of fruits and vegetables as possible.
12. What do we know from the study conducted by Lowry’s team?
A. Half rats ate fat-free diet.
B. Rats were divided into two diet groups.
C. Anxiety was tested before and after eating.
D. Behavior was observed without dietary change.
13. What is the relationship between gut bacteria diversity and health?
A. Bacteria diversity is positively associated with fitness.
B. Gut bacteria diversity has no impact on health.
C. Gut bacteria diversity depends on high-fat diets.
D. Less diversity indicates better health.
14. What can we know about serotonin?
A. It reduces the feeling of pressure. B. It may generate anxiety reaction.
C. It’s merely affected by healthy fats. D. It leads to weight gain.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. High-fat diet is the main cause of getting fat.
B. Preventing weight gain is vital for health.
C. Junk food consumption can increase anxiety.
D. Gut bacteria diversity increases with high-fat diets.

Community Clean-up Day is more than just a one-day event. It brings neighbors together to improve their living environment and build stronger relationships. From picking up litter in the park to brushing off graffiti on community walls, every small task becomes a bridge connecting people who might otherwise pass each other without a word. ____16____
First, organizing such an event requires careful planning. Local leaders or volunteers typically begin by selecting a date suitable for most people — often a weekend — to boost participation. ____17____ Local businesses may also be reached out to for supplies like gloves, trash bags, and cleaning tools, ensuring that everyone has the resources needed to contribute effectively.
On the day of the event, participants gather at a central location, such as a park or community center. ____18____ After that, they are divided into groups to cover different areas — parks or streets. Working side by side, people chat about their lives, share stories, and get to know each other better while picking up litter and removing graffiti, turning a chore into a chance for connection.
____19____ Many find that seeing the immediate results of their efforts — cleaner streets, brighter public spaces, and a neighborhood that feels renewed — gives them a deep sense of pride. Kids who take part learn firsthand the importance of responsibility and caring for their surroundings, lessons that stay with them long after the day ends.
Community Clean-up Day doesn’t end when the trash is collected. ____20____ It encourages ongoing efforts to keep the community clean, such as starting recycling programs or planting trees. In the end, it’s not just about a cleaner neighborhood, but a happier and more connected one.
A. There organizers review the day’s goals and safety tips.
B. Then posters are put up and emails sent out to spread the word.
C Some even plot ahead to make the day more competitive.
D. Participants often feel a sense of achievement after the work.
E. The success of the event depends on the number of volunteers.
F. These shared efforts, though simple, promote a sense of belonging.
G. It reminds everyone that maintaining a clean environment is a group effort.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jake stared at the rock wall, his hands sweating. It was his third try at the “Black Snake” path, and each time he’d get stuck halfway. His coach, Ms. Hale, had warned it would test more than strength — “Courage grows when you’re scared but keep going,” she’d said. But right now, courage felt as slippery (滑的) as the chalk dust on his fingers.
Last month, Jake had left the basketball team after missing the game-winning shot. His teammates’ silence still hurt, sharper than the painful spots on his hands. “You’ll find your strong point somewhere else,” his dad had said, signing him up for rock climbing. But standing here, Jake wondered if he was just trading one failure for another.
Ms. Hale hooked his rope to the anchor (锚). Her left sleeve (袖子) moved up as she worked, showing a rough scar (伤疤) winding from hand to elbow — a reminder from the day she’d fallen twenty feet on this very path. “First time I tried Black Snake, I broke my arm bone,” she said, following his look. “Took three months to get better, then I fell again — tore the shoulder muscle. Doctor said I should stop.” She tapped the scar with a finger. “But stopping felt worse than the hurt. Remember the steps: left hand to the small hold, then right foot to another one. Breathe.” Her voice was steady, but Jake noticed her eyes move to the scar on his knee — the one from a bike crash that still made him scare sudden moves.
He stepped onto the wall, fingers reaching out to find the first hold. Three meters up, he found one small hold was shaking. The terrible memory came: the basketball slipping through his fingers, the gym lights burning into his back. His foot slipped. He hung there, swinging, heart beating hard.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“You can do this,” Ms. Hale called, her voice cutting through the wind.

When Jake finally reached the top, he didn’t cheer.

Walking along the Tidal Basin (潮汐盆地) in Washington DC right now, you’ll see an almost funny scene on the west side of the Jefferson Memorial: Admirers fighting to view a little cherry tree — Stumpy.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“They have left cards, roses and bottles of wine at its base. One of the enthusiasts even threatened to tie himself to the trunk to save the tree when the sad news came out: Stumpy will be among the roughly 150 trees to be removed from the Tidal Basin as part of a three-year project to repair the site’s sinking seawalls.(他们在它的树根旁留下了卡片、玫瑰和一瓶瓶葡萄酒。当这个悲伤的消息传来时——作为修复该地下沉海墙的三年期工程的一部分,Stumpy将成为潮汐盆地大约150棵被移除的树木之一——其中一位热心人士甚至威胁要把自己绑在树干上来拯救这棵树)”可知,人们聚集在Stumpy周围,是因为知道它即将被移除,前来与之告别。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“It didn’t quite enter the public’s imagination until 2020, when a tourist posted a picture and showed Stumpy’s survival in the challenging environment. “There’s almost no way that the tree should still be alive. The trunk is entirely hollowed out and it has just three branches,” the post read. “Yet, it puts out these beautiful flowers.”(直到2020年,一位游客上传照片,展示了Stumpy在恶劣环境中顽强生存的景象,这棵小树才真正进入公众的视野。“这棵树几乎不可能还活着。树干已经完全中空,只剩下三根枝条,”帖子中写道。“然而,它依然开出了这些美丽的花朵。”)”可知, 2020年的帖子展示在极端恶劣(树干空心、树枝稀少)的条件下,Stumpy依然顽强存活并开花,突出其顽强的生命力。故选A项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段Kevin Ambrose的话“It’s sad to see it leave. But nature has the circle of life. Trees grow and die.(看到它离开令人难过。但自然界有生命周期。树木生长,然后死亡)”可知,他对于移除Stumpy感到遗憾,但也从自然界生老病死的规律角度表示理解。故选D项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“To preserve Stumpy’s memory, NPS will take cuttings from Stumpy to produce genetically (基因) identical trees that will be planted around the Tidal Basin once the seawall is restored.(为了保存Stumpy的记忆,国家公园管理局将取Stumpy的插条,培育基因完全相同的树木,待海堤修复后,它们将被种植在潮汐盆地周围)”可知,国家公园管理局将通过扦插繁殖(保留其DNA并培育后代)的方式来延续Stumpy。故选C项。

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. C

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The high-fat diet group also showed higher expression of three genes involved in production and signaling of the neurotransmitter serotonin (神经递质血清素), which is associated with stress and anxiety. While serotonin is often billed as a “feel-good brain chemical,” Lowry notes that it can lead to anxiety-like responses in animals.(高脂肪饮食组还表现出与神经递质血清素的产生和信号传导有关的三个基因的高表达,血清素与压力和焦虑有关。虽然血清素通常被称为“让人感觉良好的大脑化学物质”,但Lowry指出,它会导致动物出现类似焦虑的反应)”可知,血清素可能会导致焦虑反应。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“When stressed out, many of us turn to junk food for comfort. But new University of Colorado Boulder research suggests this strategy may have the opposite effect. The study found that in animals, a high-fat diet destroys resident gut (肠道) bacteria, changes behavior and, through a complex pathway connecting the gut to the brain, influences brain chemicals in ways that fuel anxiety.(当我们感到压力时,我们中的许多人会求助于垃圾食品来寻求安慰。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“You can do this,” Ms. Hale called, her voice cutting through the wind.

When Jake finally reached the top, he didn’t cheer.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
“You can do this,” Ms. Hale called, her voice cutting through the wind. Jake closed his eyes tightly to shut out the basketball memory. He remembered Ms. Hale’s story-how she’d broken her arm twice before getting good at this path. His left hand found the small hold again, firmer this time. Ms. Hale was really patient, showing him how she climbed the wall. When a small stone came loose, sliding down, Jake didn’t look. “One step at a time,” he said softly, copying his dad’s calm.
When Jake finally reached the top, he didn’t cheer. He just sat there, legs hanging down, watching clouds float over the trees. Ms. Hale’s shout of joy echoed below, but what stayed with him was the quiet pride — the kind that didn’t need words. As he came down the rope, he realized growing up wasn’t about never failing. It was about climbing back up, even when your hands shook. This time, he didn’t mind the painful spots. They felt like “Medals of Courage”.
