The beauties of our campus deserve to be better explored and can best be explored on foot. Walking is also a greener and healthier alternative to using vehicles. To encourage more students and staff members to walk around the campus, our school has launched a new “Walk for Green” initiative. Programme Setting out from the MTR Station, “Walk for Green” recommends various walking routes on campus, one of which covers the YIA Building, LSK Building and LWS Building. Card readers for different walking routes have been installed (安装) to record the number of points completed by “Walk for Green” participants. Participants who collect 60 points within 30 days will be awarded the title “Green Walker”. Participation To participate, students and staff members would choose a marked route and tap their school cards at the card readers installed at both the start and end points (and also at an intermediate card reader). Name, student/staff ID, department/unit, date, time, and card readers tapped will be recorded. Walking Journey Points Important Notes: 1. Walkers must complete one trip (either upwards or downwards) within one hour to score points. 2. A maximum of six points will be awarded each day. Every time you take a walk on campus, you are helping to preserve our environment and also keeping yourself healthy. Let’s start from today! 1. Where does “Walk for Green” start? A. YIA Building. B. LSK Building. C. LWS Building. D. MTR Station. 2. What are participants required to do? A. Collect at least 6 points. B. Complete a round trip. C. Maintain a fixed speed. D. Choose a pre-set route. 3. How many points do you get by walking from YIA Building to LWS Building? A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 6. B Growing up in rural (农村) communities, I always had a love of the countryside, animals and nature. The books I read as a child often had animals at their heart — The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark, Charlotte’s Web. Farming, however, was something I experienced later in life, in my teenage years. It’s something I instantly connected with, and I feel fortunate that my children have been able to grow up helping out on the farm and spending lots of time with our livestock and pets. It’s so important to get a connection with farming at an early stage. We all eat food, so being familiar with where it comes from and what goes into producing it is a natural thing. If a spark of interest can be ignited early, it can only be a good thing going forward. It’s a joy to see the children’s faces light up on school visits when they see the photos of animals on our family farm and watch the video of an egg hatching (孵化). Animals have a unique magic all of their own. Being around animals also teaches children what they can take with them into adulthood. It builds foundations of responsibility, kindness, as well as perseverance and problem solving. We work together as a family a lot on the farm, which builds a strong work ethic and a sense of teamwork — both fantastic life skills. I’m a firm believer that you don’t know what you’re going to love until you try it. My hope is that if children from non-rural backgrounds get a taste of what it’s like on a farm, then they might discover something they love. 4. How does the author lead into the topic? A. By showing his desire to keep animals. B. By recommending his childhood reads. C. By sharing his own experience with nature. D. By comparing his farm life with his children’s. 5. What does the underlined word “ignited” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Awakened. B. Expressed. C. Weakened. D. Kept. 6. What role does an early contact with farming play in children’s growth? A. A time killer. B. A character builder. C. A social connector. D. An emotional comforter. 7. Which statement does the author probably agree with? A. Well begun is half done. B. What pains us shapes us. C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Interest starts with practice. C Have you ever wondered about the universal layout (布局) of supermarkets? Smart designers are behind it, subtly tempting you to walk through each aisle and fill your shopping cart without even realizing it. Grocery store design is a carefully crafted art from both psychological and marketing standpoints, according to Reeves Connelly, who studied architectural design at the Pratt Institute. He explained there is a specific reason why fruit and vegetables are often located at the front of the store, “You’ll grab the fruits and vegetables first and then hopefully feel less guilty about buying junk food later on.” Meanwhile, essential items such as milk and eggs are placed at the back of the store to ensure customers walk through other aisles with many unhealthy options like snacks and sodas, potentially increasing the likelihood of impulse purchases. There’s also a reason why you often feel lost in local supermarkets. Shockingly, they move things around. Reeves explained, “They are very much aware that these strategies become less effective after you visit the store a few times and get a better sense of where everything is, so they’ll regularly move the products to different aisles to con fuse you. The practice is not limited to a specific store but is employed across various retail chains.” “Their little tricks always work on me,” one regular shopper admits, “I walk in to get three things and end up spending $300; that’s why I hate grocery shopping,” he said. On the other hand, some shoppers are proud to declare they have never fallen into the trap. “That’s why I always keep a shopping list on me,” another shopper shared. “I’ve started having my groceries delivered. If I have to go to the store, I never grab a trolley. If I can’t carry it, I’m not buying it,” he added. 8. What is the purpose of the supermarket layout? A. To show the designer’s wisdom. B. To save consumers’ shopping time. C. To increase non-essential purchases. D. To provide multiple goods for choice. 9. What would the store owner probably do to make more profits? A. Put the healthy food together. B. Distribute junk food in different areas. C. Place essential items before junk food. D. Rearrange products in supermarkets regularly. 10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Most shoppers are trapped in marketing tricks. B. Shopping baskets are better than heavy trolleys. C. Making lists can be a smart act for impulse buying. D. Grocery delivery can help improve supermarket sales. 11. Where is this text most likely from? A. A business magazine. B. A psychology report. C. A research paper. D. A shopping guide. D Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering (基因工程) to make them into partners in the fight against the disease. For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is short-term,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine. “because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase.” Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting soldiers, which is completely different from traditional ways of controlling malaria. To understand how it works, it is helpful to first understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It’s passed through mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. “If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But making mosquitoes unattractive to malaria is an extremely challenging task. To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique (技术) called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune (免疫的) systems can fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them into the mosquitoes. It turned out the gene-edited mosquitoes worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquitoes before they were passed to a human host. However, there is a long way to go. James’ team are now working on planning a field experiment, which he hopes could be done on an island or another distant location. But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that natural ways to reduce malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and use mosquitoes that can’t be controlled once sent into the wild?” she asks. 12. What can we know from the second and third paragraphs? A. Mosquitoes can reproduce quickly. B. Mosquitoes can be easily controlled. C. Mosquitoes have killed thousands of people. D. Mosquitoes have been used to fight against malaria. 13. How is the research of gene-editing technique going? A. It is still in laboratory tests. B. It has been tested on humans. C. It has been fully applied in the wild. D. It has been stopped due to environmental protection. 14. What is environmentalists’ attitude towards this new approach? A. Uninterested. B. Unsupportive. C. Positive. D. Unclear. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine B. Defeating Malaria with Gene-Edited Mosquitoes C. Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations D Controlling Malaria by Engineering Mosquitoes’ Genes Traveling itself is an experience hard to be described in words. ____16____ Especially the solo (独自) traveling experience is so transforming that it lives with you forever. 根据首段“Growing up in rural (农村的) communities, I always had a love of the countryside, animals and nature. The books I read as a child often had animals at their heart—The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark, Charlotte’s Web.(在农村社区长大,我一直热爱乡村、动物和大自然。我小时候读的书里经常有动物的身影——《怕黑的猫头鹰》、《夏洛的网》。)”可知,该段介绍了作者在农村成长的经历带来的影响,由此可知,本文是通过介绍个人经历引入话题的。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线单词后的“It’s a joy to see the children’s faces light up on school visits when they see the photos of animals on our family farm and watch the video of an egg hatching (孵化). Animals have a unique magic all of their own.(当孩子们参观学校时,看到我们家庭农场里动物的照片和鸡蛋孵化的视频,他们的脸上都露出了喜悦的表情。)”可知,孩子们看到农场里的动物的照片和鸡蛋孵化的视频时,他们都会感到开心,结合划线单词所在的句子“If a spark of interest can be…early, it can only be a good thing going forward.(如果兴趣的火花能够及早被……,那么它在将来只会是一件好事。)” 故选A项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题,根据倒数第二段中的“Being around animals also teaches children what they can take with them into adulthood. It builds foundations of responsibility, kindness, as well as perseverance and problem solving. We work together as a family a lot on the farm, which builds a strong work ethic and a sense of teamwork—both fantastic life skills.(它建立了责任、善良、毅力和解决问题的基础。我们一家人经常在农场一起工作,这建立了强烈的职业道德和团队意识——这两种都是很棒的生活技能。)”可知,早期与农场接触可以让孩子建立责任、善良、毅力和解决问题的基础,还可以形成强烈的职业道德和团队意识这样的生活技能,由此可知,早期与农场的接触可以培养儿童的性格和能力。故选B项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据尾段“I’m a firm believer that you don’t know what you’re going to love until you try it. My hope is that if children from non-rural backgrounds get a taste of what it’s like on a farm, then they might discover something they love.(我坚信你不知道你会爱上什么,除非你尝试过。我的希望是,如果来自非农村背景的孩子们能体验一下农场的生活,那么他们可能会发现自己喜欢的东西。)”可知,作者认为只有你尝试过才会爱上,同时,作者希望没有农村成长背景的孩子来体验一下农场生活会发现自己喜欢的东西,由此可知,作者赞成的观点是兴趣源于实践。故选D项。 C Have you ever wondered about the universal layout (布局) of supermarkets? C 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段的“Meanwhile, essential items such as milk and eggs are placed at the back of the store to ensure customers walk through other aisles with many unhealthy options like snacks and sodas, potentially increasing the likelihood of impulse purchases.(与此同时,牛奶和鸡蛋等必需品被放在商店的后面,以确保顾客穿过其他过道,有许多不健康的选择,如零食和苏打水,这可能会增加冲动购物的可能性)”可知,超市布局的目的是促进非必要消费。 根据第三段的“Reeves explained, “They are very much aware that these strategies become less effective after you visit the store a few times and get a better sense of where everything is, so they’ll regularly move the products to different aisles to con fuse you. The practice is not limited to a specific store but is employed across various retail chains.”(里夫斯解释说:“他们非常清楚,当你几次光顾商店并更好地了解每样商品的位置后,这些策略的效果就会降低,所以他们会定期将产品移到不同的过道,让你感到困惑。这种做法不仅限于特定的商店,而是被各种零售连锁店采用。”)”可知,为了提高利润,店主可能会定期重新安排超市的产品布局。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段的“On the other hand, some shoppers are proud to declare they have never fallen into the trap. “That’s why I always keep a shopping list on me,” another shopper shared.(另一方面,一些购物者自豪地宣称他们从未落入陷阱。“这就是为什么我总是把购物清单放在身上,”另一位购物者分享道)”可推知,带购物清单是避免冲动购物的明智之举。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Have you ever wondered about the universal layout (布局) of supermarkets? Smart designers are behind it, subtly tempting you to walk through each aisle and fill your shopping cart without even realizing it.(你有没有想过超市的通用布局?聪明的设计师在背后,巧妙地引诱你穿过每一条过道,在不知不觉中装满购物车)”以及全文可知,文章主要说明了超市布局背后促进非必要消费的特殊原因以及建议。由此推知,文章可能选自一本商业杂志。故选A。 D Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations D. Controlling Malaria by Engineering Mosquitoes’ Genes 【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第二段“because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase.(因为蚊子是十分顽强的小昆虫,而且它们的数量能够迅速增多)”可知,蚊子繁殖速度很快。故选A。 根据倒数第二段“James’ team are now working on planning a field experiment, which he hopes could be done on an island or another distant location.(詹姆斯的团队目前正在着手规划一项实地实验,他希望这项实验能够在一座岛屿上或者另一个偏远的地方进行)” 可知,基因编辑技术仍处于实验室测试阶段。故选A。 根据最后一段“But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that natural ways to reduce malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and use mosquitoes that can’t be controlled once sent into the wild?” she asks.(但对环保人士而言,对野生动物进行基因改造并不被接受。非营利组织“地球之友”的新兴技术项目高级项目经理丹娜·佩尔斯表示:“根本没必要对蚊子进行基因改造。”佩尔斯指出,通过自然方式来减少疟疾似乎已显示出成效,同时针对该疾病的新型疫苗也已问世。她问道:“为什么要冒不必要的风险,还要把那些一旦放归野外就无法控制的蚊子释放出去呢?”)”可知,环保主义者不支持这种做法。故选B。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering (基因工程) to make them into partners in the fight against the disease.(蚊子会传播疟疾,这种疾病每年导致数千人死亡。 Traveling itself is an experience hard to be described in words. ____16____ Especially the solo (独自) traveling experience is so transforming that it lives with you forever.
