Senior high school is not only just attending classes and getting high grades. You can make the most of the opportunities to explore your interests and sometimes interact (交流) with your fellow (同伴) students in clubs. Here are some introductions of popular clubs.
Speech Club
Do you enjoy talking? Do you think you can be a future lawyer? Try out for the school’s speech team. Not only will you meet people and make friends, you’ll also get to practice public speaking, an important skill that you will use in your life. By researching, talking about political, social, cultural and environmental topics, you will also become more aware (意识到) of current (当前的) events.
Band Club

Red Cross Club (红十字会社团)
If you are interested in the medical field or planning to take a combined M. D. program, perhaps you should consider joining your school’s Red Cross Club. As part of the high school club working with the local Red Cross, you can become a lifeguard, learn how to perform first aid (急救), or become a trained instructor (指导者) who teaches others.
Language Club
Can you speak Spanish, French, or German? Or maybe you just really like the foreign language class! Either way, you should consider joining you school’s language club and learn a new language during your spare time. It puts on several charity (慈善) and cultural events. You could be helping others in need and making new friends all at the same time!

When I was growing up, my dad spoke to me of Mr. Kosuge, as “your Japanese uncle”. My dad got to know him in 1991 in Beijing. They became fast friends, bonding over a curiosity about the other’s culture.
After my dad moved to Tennessee in 1993, Mr. Kosuge sent a holiday package to wish my parents a good next chapter. My parents returned the gesture, and since then, two distant families have established an annual tradition. Even as my parents and I relocated every few years throughout my growth, the arrival of a package from Japan was one of the few lasting constants in our lives.
This summer, I traveled to Tokyo for some reporting. I told my dad, who was planting a persimmon (柿子) tree in the backyard in California. If he was in town and available, my dad suggested, I could pay Mr. Kosuge a visit.
I walked out of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and spotted Mr. Kosuge immediately. He held a handwritten sign with my Chinese name. On the train ride into the city, Mr. Kosuge pulled out a small photo album. I opened it to see a picture of my dad, with more hair and fewer wrinkles, holding me as a preschooler. On the next page I was in my middle school graduation dress. Then came my first high school singing performance, and I left the nest for college.
Mr. Kosuge and I discovered that we share a love for persimmons, a fruit enjoyed in both Japan and China. After leaving Tokyo, I traveled around the Kansai region, where persimmons flourish, to learn the art of making dried persimmon.
Before saying goodbye to the Kosuges, I invited them to visit my family in California, where they can help themselves to the persimmon tree anytime. Until then, I’ll be practicing the art of making dried persimmon with persimmons harvested by my parents, and perhaps we’ll include some in our annual Christmas package to the Kosuges. My Japanese uncle has been sharing with us a taste of Japan for more than two decades, and it’s about time we did it.
4 What tradition did the two families develop?
A. Traveling together around the world.
B. Planting persimmon trees in the backyard.
C. Sending a gift package to each other every year.
D. Settling down in a different place every few years.
5. What did the author find from Mr. Kosuge’s photo album?
A. A handwritten sign with her Chinese name. B. The endless love of her parents.
C. Her constant pursuit of knowledge. D. The memorable moments throughout her growth.
6. Why did the author plan to send some dried persimmon to Mr. Kosuge?
A. To pay back his favor.
B. To indicate her dad’s good harvest.
C. To stress the popularity of persimmons.
D To satisfy Mr. Kosuge’s love for persimmons.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A gift coming from a remote country. B. A return favor for a lasting relationship.
C. A family friendship across continents. D. A visit to a friend in a distant country.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. C

For Shi Qinling, a pair of scissors has been with her everywhere she goes for the past decade — not as a means of self-protection, but as an artistic expression. Scissors are to this paper-cutting artist what brushes are to painters, or what pens are to writers. Always taking a pair of scissors allows her to create art whenever inspiration hits. Most of her paper-cutting works are inspired by moments in daily life, such as a neighbor’s dog, her own pets and scenes on the streets.
In 2010, she started learning paper-cutting from Xi Xiaoqin, the national inheritor (继承人) of the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) of paper-cutting. Six years later, Shi was named as a Shanghai paper-cutting inheritor and became the city’s “youngest inheritor” of the paper-cutting heritage.
Similar to local dialects, paper-cutting comes in different styles, depending on the region. In general, the paper-cutting artworks in the country’s northern area are usually rough patterns used as decorations on windows, walls, roofs, lanterns and other household items. In southern China, paper-cutting is used as the base pattern for embroidery (刺绣) and requires more careful workmanship. Shanghai paper-cutting, on the other hand, is a combination of these two styles. Since the 1960s, Shanghai paper-cutting has been more frequently adopted in artworks and handicrafts.
Shi now works at the Fenglin community cultural center and she now plans to produce cultural and creative goods to attract more people to learn paper-cutting. “We are very proud to have this unique folk culture and art project As we have the responsibility to protect and inherit this cultural heritage, we will make more efforts to attract people from different age groups and different fields to try paper-cutting,” said Liu Li, director of the Fenglin community development office.
8. Why does Shi Qinling take a pair of scissors with her everywhere?
A. To protect herself.
B. To show her identity as an artist.
C. To create works whenever she has inspiration.
D. To share paper-cutting skills with ordinary people.
9. What feature do Shi Qinling’s works have?
A. They are in various styles. B. They are mainly related to animals.
C. They are a hit among young people. D. They are mostly inspired by details of daily life.
10. What can we learn about Shanghai paper-cutting?
A. It is usually combined with embroidery.
B. It is usually used as decorations during festivals.
C. It is a mixture of China’s northern and southern styles.
D. It requires greater skill than other paper-cutting forms.
11. What is Liu Li’s attitude toward the paper-cutting project?
A. She disapproves of it. B. She supports it.
C. She is tolerant of it. D. She doesn’t care about it.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. B

Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you're never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.
Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practise as much as young children do.
Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.
When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they're doing something unusual or “too hard”.
So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It's never too late to learn a new language. If you're older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you're a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!
12. By saying “language is their life” in Paragraph 2, the author means that children ________.
A. can't live without language B. lead a happy life every day
C. practise a new language a lot D. are taken good care of by adults
13. What may make it hard for the old people to learn a new language?
A. They are afraid of being laughed at. B. They usually have too many interests.
C. They think making mistakes is natural. D. They always make different kinds of mistakes.
14. Which of the following shows the difference between children and adults in learning a new language?
A. The behaviour they have. B. The learning attitudes.
C. The future plans they have made. D. The materials they are using.
15. According to the author, a new language ________.
A. can never be learnt by the old people B. can be grasped by the old people easily
C. can be understood only by the old people D. can be learnt by both the old and the young
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇议论文。作者论述了年轻人和较长者学语言的不同,年长者不是没有能力学习语言而是需要付出较多。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“They study for thousands of hours every year(他们每年学习数千个小时)”可知, 孩子们用大量的时间去学习和练习语言。因此推断通过说“language is their life”作者的意思是孩子们要对新语言进行大量练习。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language. (然而,成年人在学习一门新语言时,往往会感到有压力,要求自己做到完美。这可能会让很多人气馁,让学习一门新语言变得更加困难)”可知, 成人学语言时有压力是因为总想做到完美, 怕出错, 这就阻碍了他们学语言。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.(此外,学习一门新语言的孩子也会犯错误。这给了他们学习勇敢和自信的自由。然而,成年人在学习一门新语言时,往往会感到有压力,要求自己做到完美。 这可能会让很多人气馁,让学习一门新语言变得更加困难。)”以及第四段“When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they're doing something unusual or “too hard”.(当小孩子学习一门新语言时,他们会把各种语言视为社会的“正常”组成部分。这种心态有助于他们欣然接受学习一门新语言,而不会觉得自己在做一件不寻常的事情或“太难”了)”可推断,学习态度是成人和孩子学习新语言的区别。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It's never too late to learn a new language. If you're older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you're a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language! (所以如果你想学一门新语言,那就去学吧! 学习一门新语言永远都不晚。如果你年纪更大,可能需要更多的工作,但这是可以做到的。不过,如果你还是个孩子,现在是时候走出去学一门新语言了! )”可推知,根据作者的观点,一门新语言老少皆可学。故选D。

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣)? ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here? This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why?” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense.

【答案】范文
A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifted heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the scorching sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn't even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth, working tirelessly. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn't shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I didn’t understand then, but now I see how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world because they care for us.” Tears welled up in Catherine’s eyes as she embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. From that day on, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.

A. To pay back his favor.
B. To indicate her dad’s good harvest.
C. To stress the popularity of persimmons.
D. To satisfy Mr. Kosuge’s love for persimmons.
7. What is the main idea of the text?

“We are very proud to have this unique folk culture and art project, As we have the responsibility to protect and inherit this cultural heritage, we will make more efforts to attract people from different age groups and different fields to try paper-cutting,” said Liu Li, director of the Fenglin community development office.
B It is usually used as decorations during festivals.
C It is a mixture of China’s northern and southern styles.
D. It requires greater skill than other paper-cutting forms.
11. What is Liu Li’s attitude toward the paper-cutting project?
A. She disapproves of it. B. She supports it.
C. She is tolerant of it. D. She doesn’t care about it.
D
A They are afraid of being laughed at.
