话题1 自然灾害与防范
Passage 1
Jim is on holiday in Australia. There are bushfires in the area where he is staying. He is telling his friend Mark about the fires.
Mark: We saw the news about the bushfires. Are they close to you?
Jim: Yes. They are very close. The weather is hot and windy. The conditions are ideal for bushfires and once they get started they spread quickly. Yesterday the temperatures hit 44°C and there were reports of over 50 fires in the area. It will take days to put them out.
Mark: Have you seen any fires?
Jim: Yes, I have. I’m staying with my uncle Ted. He’s a volunteer firefighter. He says the fires have killed a lot of animals, but no people. He says that the safest thing is to stay inside unless your house catches fire!
Mark: Is it safe where you are?
Jim: We’re fine. We listen to the radio to keep up to date with the latest news. So we know if a fire is coming our way. One got very close yesterday. Three houses nearby caught fire. Luckily, the families put the fires out before they did too much damage.
Mark: Are you worried? Do you think you will need to move to a safer place?

Ryrkaypiy, a village with about 700 people, is located in the northeast of Russia. Standing on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, it has to brave both the Arctic’s cold weather and wild animals like polar bears. Most of the area’s polar bears live a few miles away from Ryrkaypiy. Only a few bears come near to the village now and then.
But last winter, over 50 polar bears went to Ryrkaypiy in search of food. The villagers were told to stay indoors to avoid danger. Now, polar bears come to the village more often and in larger numbers than ever.
Although polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their life on the sea ice. The ice gives them a place where they can have a rest and catch fish. But as the temperature rises because of global warming, the bears have started to find their home disappearing.
Polar bears normally go onto dry land in summer and return to the ice when the ocean freezes again in autumn. But over the past few years, the ocean has frozen later and later, and the ice area has become smaller and smaller. Unable to live on the ice, hungry polar bears have to look for food on land, including villages like Ryrkaypiy.

话题4 学习策略
Passage 1
Students usually learn lessons in class. They stay in the classroom and listen to teachers. This is one way of learning. But is it the only way? Of course not. Another way is self-teaching. For example, when you can’t remember something while doing homework, what will you do? You can turn to your book to find the answer.
How to teach yourself? First, read. Read things that interest you. Second, you need to ask yourself questions. A clever student is often good at asking questions. Third, answer the questions yourself—by studying hard, reading books, or sometimes asking others. These ways of self-teaching are useful. If you keep doing them, you’ll surely make progress in your studies.

Four types of friends you need in your life
Do you know that people will die early if they have no friends during their lifetime? The survey shows if you want to live longer and more happily, you need to have some friends who can share your sadness and happiness or can be helpful when you are in trouble.
The following four types of friends are just what you need to keep the doctors away.
A Loyal Best Friend
Everyone needs a friend who will support you in different situations. This kind of friend knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets, but still loves you all the same.
A Friendly Neighbor
These days, a lot of people don’t know their own neighbors. It’s a shame, because some neighbors can be the most helpful people. If you forget to lock the front door when you are on holiday, you can call your neighbors to lock it for you. So it’s wonderful to have nice and helpful neighbors.
A Workmate
You’ll find it much easier to chat with someone than eating lunch alone every day.
Your workmate doesn’t have to be your best friend. If you two get along well with each other, you can always start going out and having lunch with them outside of the office.
A Friend from a Different Culture
If everyone had a friend from a different culture, the world would be a much better place. Remember not to make friends with someone just because they’re from a different culture. Instead, keep your mind open, and if you meet someone from other places, try to learn about their customs and traditions.

Passage 1
The WWF (世界自然基金会) has warned that climate change is threatening (威胁) the life of the snow leopards (雪豹) in the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山脉). It says rising temperatures cause the natural living places of the big cat to the point that snow leopards could die out. In a new report, it says that up to a third of the areas on the mountain where the snow leopards live could become uninhabitable (不宜居住的). Lots of plants and food the animals need could disappear in warmer temperatures. The WWF said, “The Himalayas area will face danger if we choose not to care about climate change...We will lose the snow leopard.”
It isn’t just climate change that is making a serious threat to the future of the snow leopard. Many activities from humans are also adding to the dangers the animals face. Snow leopards are highly needed for their fur and body parts. People are killing the animals for money. The snow leopards are also being killed by farmers when they are trying to protect their animals. As the natural food of the snow leopards is decreasing, the animals are going into human areas to kill farm animals. The result is that the farmers shoot the snow leopards. They don’t like to live with others. They spend most of their time by themselves in trees, where they wait until a small animal passes. The sun bear is the smallest bear, with a body length of 48 to 60 inches. Sun bears prefer rainforests. They are believed to sleep in trees. The sun bear is not a big meat-eater. The sun bear often uses its long tongue(舌头) for eating termites(白蚁).
The name sun bear comes from the pale circle on its chest (胸膛). They have short, black fur with a golden or white horseshoe shape on their chest. It is also known as “honey bear” because of its love for the sweet food.
With only 600 to 1,000 left in the wild in the rainforests of South Asia, it is in danger.
People are cutting down trees and using the land for farming. So the rainforests where the sun bear lives are becoming smaller and smaller. Sun bears are killed because their meat is delicious and parts of their body can be made into traditional medicine. People also like to keep young sun bears as pets and kill the mother bears. Passage 4
In some countries, polar bears are considered as endangered animals. If the earth becomes so warm that there is no longer enough ice for the bears to live on, there will probably be no polar bears.
Immediate action must be taken to help polar bears.

The Yangtze River, about 6,300 kilometres long, is the longest river in Asia. It provides a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people. It covers an area of 1.8 million square kilometres, about a fifth of the national total. The river also provides a third of our country’s fresh water resources. Along with the Yellow River, it is considered as China’s “mother river”.
However, in recent years, this “mother river” has met with some environmental problems. It was seriously polluted and the number of the fish is getting smaller. To solve these problems, the government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law. The law came into force on March 1, 2021. There are nine parts in the law, covering areas such as resource protection, anti-pollution measures, green development and legal responsibilities. More importantly, the law has introduced a fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze River’s natural waterways. According to the new law, both the central government and local organizations would put the river protection into their economic (经济的) and social development plans.
Around 231,000 fishermen had given up their fishing rights along the Yangtze River. Chinese Vice-premier Han Zheng said that more support should be given to these people to help them find new jobs. How to teach yourself? First, read. Read things that interest you. Second, you need to ask yourself questions. A clever student is often good at asking questions. We had to think about how to make it strong enough to hold a small toy car. We discussed, designed, and tried many times. Finally, our bridge successfully held the car! We were so proud.
Other groups did different things. One group planted small vegetables in the school garden. Another group cooked simple and healthy dishes in the kitchen. The last group learned basic first aid skills, like how to bandage a wound.

“We have welcomed new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old boy in Beijing. “During the breaks, some can play with these cute animals, while others exercise in the playground.”
As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe is also important. P.E. teachers in schools keep an eye on students in the playground.

If you have such kinds of friends, you will surely live longer and more happily.
