Me & Miss Bee 1 In Brooklyn, you went to the meat store for meat and the drugstore for medicine. But when I spent the summer with my grandmother in Warwick, New York, she sent me down to the general store (杂货店) with a list. How could I hope to find anything on the crowded shelves around me, everything all mixed together? I walked up to the counter (柜台). Behind it was a lady. Her glasses hung on the tip of her nose as she read the paper spread out before her. 2 “Excuse me” I said. She looked up. “You’re that Clements kid,” she said. “Your daddy sent you to stay the summer. I’m Miss Bee. And your name?” 3 “Bella. I had pneumonia (肺炎),” I explained. “Daddy thought the country air might be good for me. Come closer and let me get a look at you,” she said. She pushed her glasses up her nose. “I want to be able to describe you to the police if something goes missing from the store.” “I’m not a thief!” I shouted. “Now you don’t look like one. But who knows?” Then she went back to reading her newspaper. 4 Never had anyone spoken to me like this! I couldn’t wait to get out of this strange store and back to my grandma. “I need to get these,” I said, holding up my list. “So?” Miss Bee did not look up from her paper. “Go get them.” “But...but,” I said, “there are too many things in here.” 5 Miss Bee pointed to a sign on the screen door. “That’s why they call it a general store, kid. And there’s no one here except you and me and I’m not your servant, so I suggest you get yourself a basket from over there and start filling. If you’re lucky, you’ll be home by sundown.” So I started at the nearest shelf, looking for pork and beans. It took me three wall-to-wall searches before I found a can. Next up was toilet paper. I found it under the daily newspaper. The store was a mystery. 6 An hour later I found everything on the list except for one thing—bicarbonate of soda (小苏打). I would have to ask Miss Bee. I found enough courage and walked towards her. I reached up so she could see the list and pointed to the strange word. “I can’t read this,” I said. 7 Miss Bee wouldn’t even look at it. “Well,” she said, “it seems you don’t listen real good. I’m sure your grandma told you as she wrote them down. Just like you’d remember me telling you I’m not your servant. Next time you should listen better to both of us.” 8 I looked at her, ________ and ________. 9 “That Miss Bee is without doubt the most unkind woman I’ve ever met!” I announced when I got home. 10 Grandma just laughed and shook her head, saying, “She’s not so bad.” 11 Not so bad? Grandma didn’t know the half of it! I never wanted to return to the store again. Unluckily, Grandma had other ideas. 12 I visited Miss Bee several times a week that summer. Going to the store was more like going into battle (战斗). I left my grandma’s house with my list-memorized to the letter-and the prices in my head and walked into Miss Bee’s. 13 “That can of beans is only 29 cents!” I corrected her one afternoon. I had watched the numbers change on the cash register(收银机) closely and Miss Bee had added 35 cents. She didn’t seem embarrassed when I found out. She just looked at me over her glasses and fixed the price. 14 All summer long she found different ways to make me make mistakes. No sooner had I learned how to pronounce bicarbonate of soda and kept its location on the shelf in mind than Miss Bee changed the positions of the goods and made me look for it all over again. 15 By summer’s end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped in to get a bag of candy. Miss Bee handed it to me and said, “Alright, kid, what did you learn this summer? 16 “You’re an unkind woman!” The thought crossed my mind. There was nothing I learned this summer that Miss Bee wanted to hear! 17 To my surprise, Miss Bee laughed. “I know what you think of me,” she said. “But I don’t care. Each of us is put on this earth for a reason. Some people will find cures (治疗方法) for diseases; ________; others will climb mountains. I believe my job is to teach every child I meet 10 life lessons to help him or her. Think what you will, but when you get older, you’ll be glad we met!” 18 Glad I met Miss Bee? Ha! This idea was absurd. Until one day, my daughter came to me with homework troubles. “It’s too hard,” she said. “Could you finish my math problems for me?” 19 “If I do it for you, how will you ever learn to do it yourself?” I said. 20 Suddenly, I saw myself back at that general store where I had learned the hard way to check my bill along with the cashier. I wondered: had Miss Bee really taught me something all those years ago? Could anyone really learn from an unkind lady who made life so unhappy? So I took out a piece of paper and wrote down ten things I had learned from my story with Miss Bee. 21 Sure enough, I had learned ten life lessons: 1. _______________________________ 2. _______________________________ 3. _______________________________ 4. Things aren’t always the same as they were yesterday. 5. Don’t think that there will always be help when you are in trouble. … 根据小说内容回答下列问题。 1. Why did Bella come to Warwick? _______________________________ 2. What was the general store like? _______________________________ 3. Why did Bella think going to the store was more like going into battle? _______________________________ 4. Did Bella feel thankful to Miss Bee that summer? How do you know? _______________________________ 5. 请在第8段空白处填入两个恰当的形容词。 I looked at her, _________ and _________. 6. 请归纳第15段中划线句子的意思。 It means Bella could _________ than before. 7. 请根据上下文,在第17段中空白处填写一个完整的句子。 _______________________________ 8. 请写出第18段中划线单词absurd汉语意思。 _______________________________ 9. 请用英语列举三条作者的收获。 _______________________________ 10. 请写一篇80词左右的短文,简要介绍故事内容。首句已给出,不计入总词数。 Bella spent the summer with her grandma in Warwick. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】1. Because she had pneumonia and country air helped her. 2 Crowded with things mixed together. 3. Because Miss Bee kept making her make mistakes. 4. No, she didn’t. She thought Miss Bee was unkind and meeting her was absurd. 5. ①. angry ②. upset 6. finish shopping much faster 7. some will create great works of art 8. 荒谬的、荒唐的 9. 1. Learn to check bills carefully. 2. Be able to find things independently. 3. Listen carefully to others. 10. 例文 Bella spent the summer with her grandma in Warwick. She was sent to Miss Bee’s general store to shop, but found the store messy and Miss Bee unkind—she refused to help and even changed goods’ positions to make Bella struggle. Gradually, Bella became skilled at shopping independently. Though she disliked Miss Bee then, years later she realized that those tough experiences had taught her valuable life lessons and made her braver in her later life. It was Miss Bee’s “strictness” that made Bella more self-reliant and careful in the long run. 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了贝拉因患肺炎到乡下奶奶家避暑,期间频繁被派往蜜蜂小姐的杂货店购物。蜜蜂小姐看似严苛,却通过各种方式让贝拉在实践中学会独立、细心等宝贵人生道理,多年后贝拉才领悟其良苦用心。 【1题详解】 根据“I had pneumonia. Daddy thought the country air might be good for me.”可知,贝拉患了肺炎,爸爸认为乡下的空气对她有益,故填Because she had pneumonia and country air helped her. 【2题详解】 根据“How could I hope to find anything on the crowded shelves around me, everything all mixed together?”可知,杂货店货架拥挤,所有东西都混放在一起,故填Crowded with things mixed together. 【3题详解】 根据“All summer long she found different ways to make me make mistakes.”可知,蜜蜂小姐总找各种办法让贝拉犯错,所以贝拉觉得去杂货店像打仗,故填Because Miss Bee kept making her make mistakes. 【4题详解】 根据“That Miss Bee is without doubt the most unkind woman I’ve ever met!”及“Glad I met Miss Bee?
