A
February may be the shortest month in the year — but you can still pack some serious travels into it. Whether you need a restful break after the holiday season or an adventure to kick-start your year, there’s a perfect destination just waiting for you. Here are some of our favorite places to go in February.
Montreal, Canada
February in Montreal is cold, but the city is tailored to its climate and so is its eating scene. To gain the extra calories you’ll need to function in these icy temperatures, try the traditional cuisine: Montreal bagels and smoked-meat sandwiches. Yet Montreal is more diverse than ever, and its culinary offerings are similarly varied. Expect to taste Korean fried chicken, Haitian griot, Syrian kibbeh and more.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE is waiting for discovery in this relatively comfortable month, when daytime temperatures remain around 24℃. Beyond Dubai’s tourist beaches, visit Black Palace Beach and Dibba in Fujairah. And enjoy the refreshing cultural experience: explore Al Ain’s old center, Mleiha’s archaeology (考古学), and Sharjah and Abu Dhabi’s world-class museums like the Louvre.
Tanzania
February is an ideal time to explore northern Tanzania. Groups of wildebeest (角马) cross the plains, and zebras eat the short grass in the southern Serengeti, building up energy before giving birth from early to mid-February. This short dry season offers superb bird-watching. Reserves such as Selous and Ruaha are less crowded with lower rates at hotels. Don’t miss Olduvai Gorge, the “Birthplace of Mankind”, and wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater.
Singapore
Warmth is guaranteed year-round in Singapore, with average temperatures a fairly consistent 27℃. February, however, is one of the driest months — and if you come after Lunar New Year, things aren’t too busy. Perhaps the chief reason to visit, though, is to eat. Hawker centers serve up wonderful food in cheap, canteen-like settings, while top-end restaurants are getting even better. Seek out chili crab, spicy rendang curry and a range of Nyonya dishes, unique to the region.
1. What can tourists do in the UAE?
A. Experience exciting water sports. B. Participate in bird-watching activities.
C. Explore local history and culture. D. Learn to make smoked-meat sandwiches.
2. Which place is most suitable for animal lovers?
A. Tanzania. B. Singapore. C. Montreal, Canada. D. United Arab Emirates.
3. What do Montreal and Singapore have in common?
A. They have rich wildlife resources. B. They are crowded after February.
C. They can offer delicious meals to tourists. D. They share the same kind of weather.
【答案】1 C 2. A 3. C

Astrid Poghosyan, a 28-year-old Armenian violinist, now working as a helper to the president of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, a celebrated orchestra in China’s most populous (人口稠密的) city, has achieved her dream as a musician.
This summer, she has been busy making preparations for a series of in-person and online music events and cultural exchange programs, including a music festival in Shanghai and a live-streamed (直播的) international violin competition. Poghosyan said she always puts all her energy into the projects in which she is involved, whether they are offline or online events, as she believes that every little effort will help her realize her music-related dreams.
Having studied and worked in China for 12 years, Poghosyan has now become a real China hand. Then just 16, Poghosyan couldn’t speak a word of Chinese. “And my high-school-level English wasn’t of much help at that time,” she said. “So I decided to learn Chinese to solve the communication problem.”
As she gradually immersed (沉浸) herself in the Chinese language and culture, she also started to make Chinese friends and explore the exciting city life of Shanghai. “Since I first came to Shanghai, I have always been impressed by the kindness and friendliness of the people here,” she said, “Their smiles have made me feel the warmth of the city.”

It’s too early to name any activity The Sport of 2025, but if you asked me to do it today, I would give the title to Hyrox, which is an individual but interactive activity. Fitness fans run eight kilometres and stop after each to perform exercises such as sled pushes or burpees. The faster you complete the course, the higher your score is in the Hyrox worldwide rankings. Many surveys indicate that people are exercising more now than in previous years. It’s individual fitness pursuits that are driving the rise.
I spent the first half of my 29-year-old life as a hockey player and the second as a distance runner. I long for the common goal of team sports, but I also value the responsibility and clear results that come from working toward my own running targets. So it’s odd to me that people prefer individual fitness pursuits to team sports.
One common explanation is that organized sports haven’t bounced back since the pandemic (疫情) a few years ago. When people learned to exercise with less money, equipment, space, time and organization, they kept individual activities. Meanwhile, there are now fitness apps for users to tailor works based on their heart rates and sleep quality. The rise of wearables has also got some of us addicted to our own exercise routines.
However, an obvious problem for individual sports is loneliness. Engaging in team sports is a proven way to ease it, which boosts our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships. Well, Hyrox is a combined activity: an individual sport that we do with others. Each competition follows the same scoring system, which allows people to compare their results with others around the world.
It’s the type that’s come to dominate the fitness world. And, according to Guy Faulkner, a professor at the University of British Columbia, if it gets people out of the door, then it’s a good one. “The most effective form of sport,” he said, “is the form you will sustain.”
8. What is the key feature of Hyrox?
A. It requires teamwork and shared plans. B. It is organized to find sports partners.
C. It skips physical challenges for leisure. D. It is self-paced but ranked with others.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Negative effects of the pandemic. B. Methods of choosing wearables.
C. Reasons for the shift to individual fitness. D. Tailored workouts with fitness apps.
10. How does Hyrox address the problem with individual sports?
A. By targeting people afraid of public interactions.
B. By connecting individuals with shared experiences.
C. By prioritizing personal achievements over group goals.
D. By offering a kind of treatment for mental health issues.
11. What does Guy Faulkner consider the most effective sport?
A. Sport that requires the least effort. B. Sport that involves more people.
C. Sport that one will do consistently. D. Sport that provides the quickest results.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C

On the way to vacation, you’re jazzed and distracted: “Did I pack enough clothes?” “Did we turn off the heater?” The travel day goes by in a rush. Going home is another story. The same three-hour journey seems to drag on between layovers (中途停留), traffic and rest-stop food. How can one way feel so different from the other?
Yonason Goldson, an author and ethicist, explains that when we travel to a new place, we tend to be in a more positive mindset. “There’s the expectation that something more exciting, interesting, new and fun is waiting for us,” he says. “That makes the trip part of the experience. By contrast, the trip home feels anticlimactic.”
Another explanation is the oncoming weight of the post-vacation blues. As the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Perhaps time crawls when you’re depressed.
However, the return trip doesn’t always feel longer. In fact, some people find the way to the destination even more exhausting. Psychiatrist Gary Small relates it to the “return trip effect,” which argues that the first leg of a trip (outward journey) can feel longer because we tend to underestimate how long it will take. We may guess the way there will go by quicker than it does, leading to a “violation of expectation.” By the return trip, as we’ve gotten to know the route, it feels less challenging. However, this effect usually occurs when we’re traveling somewhere for the first time. If we travel a familiar route, the return trip may instead feel longer.
Small recommends introducing some novelty into the trip home to help pass the time. This can include doing puzzles, engaging in conversations or taking different routes to challenge your mind. In addition, you can change how you travel altogether. Susan Sherren, founder of a travel agency, encourages clients to plan trips with a “bell curve” itinerary (行程): easing into the vacation, building up to the exciting, action-packed days, then slowing down before it’s over. In this way, you’re not left feeling exhausted. You can also plan enjoyable activities to look forward to when you get home to soften a crash landing back into your normal routine.
12. What does the underlined word “anticlimactic” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Exciting and rewarding.
B. Disappointing and less dramatic.
C. Fast and enjoyable.
D. Dangerous and challenging.
13. What can be learned from Paragraph 4?
A. Route familiarity makes the outward journey seemingly shorter.
B. The return journey from a first-time destination feels shorter.
C. The outward journey appears shorter due to predictable time.
D. Violation of expectation results in a longer return journey.
14. Susan Sherren’s “bell curve” itinerary helps clients to .
A. extend the vacation without extra costs
B. have chances for thrilling experiences
C. readjust to the rhythms of daily life
D. return home on schedule
15. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Does Travel Feel Longer on the Way Home?
B. How Can We Improve Travel Experience?
C. What Causes Exhaustion in Return Trip?
D. Does the Return Trip Lack Novelty?
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. A

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Some experts suggest that lifting weights is the best way to keep our bodies strong and healthy as we age. Weight lifting is a type of resistance training. Some experts claim resistance training can even slow aging. Marcas Bamman has researched the effects of weight-resistance training on aging bodies for many years. ____16____. “Resistance training is in many ways the true fountain of youth,” Bamman said.
Bamman’s advice is mainly for people 60 years of age or older. ____17____. He also suggests going to a gym to work out with weight machines. For beginners, he said machines are better.
____18____. For those using a gym with weight machines, Bamman also suggests getting a trainer, a person to teach you how to use the equipment. “It’s actually quite safe,” he said. But he added that a good trainer can teach the movements properly.
You can go to a gym, do training at home or work out in a park. However, both Bamman and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest doing resistance training twice a week. ____19____. He also suggests non-weight-training days in between. For example, if you do strength training on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, then you should rest on Tuesday and Thursday. He said, before resistance training, start with five to ten minutes of light activity and stretching to warm up. Then, do between eight and ten different resistance exercise movements. When you reach the 10th repetition, you should feel that you cannot do many more. If you could have done ten more, you might need to increase the resistance.
____20____. “Sometimes you see people who sit on the machine, do a set and then play with their phone for three to four minutes,” he said.
A. He believes starting from a younger age is good
B. Bamman added that three times a week is even better
C. He shared his advice recently with the Associated Press
D. However, he said no one should wait to start resistance training
E. Before starting any resistance training, get the advice of a medical doctor
F. Bamman also suggests that people should keep moving during their training
G. It is necessary to talk with your doctor about the skills used in resistance training

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.
Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he knew he would never be one of them.
Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn’t stop him from pouring his passion into basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.
It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. “Hi, Lankas,” Dave greeted him. “My name is Dave.” “Hi, Dave,” Lankas replied as he got closer. “Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?” Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, “Why not?”

【答案】 So, a game of two players began. Dave went all out to play against this tough opponent, forgetting all about his height. It was a game he could play to his heart’s content. Each shot was hard-earned. Soon they were sweating like a pig. To Dave, there was nothing like playing against someone like Lankas. It was more like an enjoyment than a challenge. Two hours passed before they knew it. The two thanked each other and said goodbye. Dave was secretly expecting another chance to play with Lankas.
The next Saturday, when Dave was playing in the gym, Lankas appeared shouting, “Dave, I have good news for you.” Dave stopped playing and the two had a talk. He learned that Lankas talked with the coach about Dave and their game the week before and the coach agreed to take Dave as a member of the team. At the news, Dave had to hold back his tears of joy and couldn’t help jumping up. Lankas patted Dave on the shoulder, “Hi, buddy, do you need an opponent to play against?”

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
February may be the shortest month in the year — but you can still pack some serious travels into it.
The UAE is waiting for discovery in this relatively comfortable month when daytime temperatures remain around 24℃.

Such a multicultural background has certainly helped her excel at her current job. “Poghosyan plays a very special role in our orchestra,” said Zhou Ping, president of the orchestra. “She has lived in China for long and loves the Chinese culture, and she knows how to use the advantage of a multicultural background in her work.”
For Poghosyan, the life she now leads is quite different from when she first came to China in 2009 to study violin at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
4. What does Poghosyan do in China at present?
A. A hostess of a music festival. B. A president of an orchestra.
C. A judge of some music events. D. An assistant of Zhou Ping.
