When I was younger, I loved opening surprise bags. They came with candies and a toy, and you never knew what surprises lay within. Now I still love surprise bags, but I open a different type of surprise bag: one filled with artifacts
Part of my job in a museum is cataloguing (编入目录) unprocessed donations. Sometimes when a collection arrives, it is in a sorry state after being excavated (挖掘). It is often covered in dirt, and it can be difficult to tell exactly what each item is. That’s where the fun part starts. I get to wash everything and then discover the artifacts that are revealed! There is nothing like the feeling of being the first to see a piece of history after it has been conserved, particularly with the knowledge of its possible age of thousands of years.
Once washed and dried, the artifacts are identified with the help of the museum’s comparative collections, which have been thoughtfully organized over many years in order to show representative examples of different types of artifacts. After being identified, the artifacts are entered into the museum’s collections database. Once on the database, a unique catalogue card must be printed for each artifact. Next, the artifacts are labeled with a unique catalogue number and put away in our storage room. This detailed process of record-keeping, as well as maintaining a properly organized collections storage room, is an important part of collections management. It allows us to know where each artifact is at all times and makes it convenient for researchers to access our collections.
I started working in the museum world 25 years ago, and I have been lucky enough to work with the wonderful surprises that this fascinating discipline offers. Come visit a museum — you never know what surprises await you!
4 What does the author suggest by mentioning her childhood surprise bags?
A. Her expertise in artifacts.
B. The joy of unexpected discovery.
C. Her early connection to artifacts.
D. The importance of collecting rare items.
5. How does the author feel about cleaning the items?
A. Excited. B. Peaceful. C. Regretful. D. Tired.
6. What is the primary purpose of the detailed cataloguing process?
A. To make the most of the storage room.
B. To prepare artifacts for public exhibition.
C. To keep a comprehensive historical record.
D. To track the precise location of every artifact.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Great hopes make great men.

When we’re confronting a confusing problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm. We’re looking to the team to get the best ideas as quickly as possible. I love seeing it happen — except for one catch. Group brainstorming usually backfires.
In brainstorming meetings, many good ideas are lost. Extensive evidence shows that when we generate ideas together, we fail to maximize collective intelligence. Brainstorming groups fall so far short of their potential that we may get more and better ideas if we all work alone. As the humorist Dave Barry said, “If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved and never will achieve its full potential, that word would be: meetings.” But the problem isn’t meetings themselves; it’s how we run them.
You’ve probably seen people bite their tongues in meetings due to ego threat (“I don’t want to look stupid.”), noise (“We can’t all talk at once.”), and pressure to fit in (“Let’s all jump on the boss’s ship!”). Goodbye, diversity of thought; hello, groupthink. These challenges are greater for people who lack power or status: the most junior person in the room or an introvert (内向的人) lost in a sea of extroverts.
To unearth the hidden potential in teams, instead of brainstorming, we are better off shifting to “brainwriting”. The initial steps are alone. You start by asking everyone to generate ideas separately. Next, you pool them and share them among the group without mentioning the names. Each member evaluates the ideas on their own. When ideas are developed and assessed individually before being chosen collectively, possibilities that might otherwise go unnoticed can surface and be advanced.
In brainstorming meetings, it’s too easy for participation to lean toward the biggest egos, the loudest voices, and the most powerful people. The brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table. The goal isn’t to be the smartest person in the room; it’s to make the room smarter.
8. What can replace the word “catch” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Rare case. B. Helpful suggestion.
C. Hidden problem. D. Special requirement.
9. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ____________ of brainstorming meetings.
A. potential benefits B. typical outcomes
C. standard procedures D. causes of ineffectiveness
10. Why is brainwriting better?
A. It simplifies the procedures B. It requires fewer participants.
C. It ensures balanced participation. D. It uses a more structured approach.
11. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To explain a theory. B. To encourage a practice.
C. To make a comparison. D. To challenge a decision.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第一段“We’re looking to the team to get the best ideas as quickly as possible. I love seeing it happen — except for one catch.Group brainstorming usually backfires.(我们希望团队能尽快想出最好的主意。我喜欢看到这种情况发生——除了一个catch.小组头脑风暴通常会适得其反)”可知,作者喜欢看到团队想出好主意,但是有一个隐藏的问题。catch在此处意为“隐藏的问题”。C选项“Hidden problem.(隐藏的问题)”符合题意。故选C。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“You’ve probably seen people bite their tongues in meetings due to ego threat (“I don’t want to look stupid.”), noise (“We can’t all talk at once.”), and pressure to fit in (“Let’s all jump on the boss’s ship!”). Goodbye, diversity of thought; hello, groupthink.(你可能见过有人在会议中因为自尊心受到威胁(“我不想看起来很蠢。”)、噪音(“我们不能同时说话。”)以及融入的压力(“让我们都跳上老板的船!”)而欲言又止。再见,思想的多样性;你好,集体思维)”可知,本段主要讲述了头脑风暴会议无效的原因,包括自尊心受到威胁、噪音以及融入的压力等。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“In brainstorming meetings, it’s too easy for participation to lean toward the biggest egos, the loudest voices, and the most powerful people. The brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table.(在头脑风暴会议中,参与很容易倾向于最自负的人、声音最大的人和最有权力的人。头脑写作过程确保所有想法都能被提出)”可知,头脑写作法能确保所有想法都被提出,即确保平衡参与。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“To unearth the hidden potential in teams, instead of brainstorming, we are better off shifting to “brainwriting”. (为挖掘团队潜在潜力,我们应摒弃头脑风暴,转向“头脑书写”模式)”和最后一段“The brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table. The goal isn’t to be the smartest person in the room; it’s to make the room smarter.(头脑写作过程确保所有想法都能被提出。目标不是成为房间里最聪明的人,而是让房间变得更聪明)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了头脑风暴存在的问题,并建议采用头脑写作法来激发团队潜力,因此文章的目的是鼓励一种实践。故选B。

The Anthropocene (人类世) is a new term to describe our age. The beds of rock being created under our feet today will be the record of our era. Future geologists (地质学家) will find huge concentrations of plastics, the fallout from the burning of fossil fuels and large amounts of cement (水泥) used to build our cities. Meanwhile, a major report shows an average decline of 73% of wild animal populations on Earth over the past 50 years.
Nowadays, humans have concentrated in cities. But somewhere deep within, a desire for contact with nature remains.
We holiday on man-made beaches, attend zoos that display living animals in lifelike versions of their natural homes, and visit amusement parks that offer a “jungle experience”. In these places, everything repeats itself and nature is made safe — no dangerous plants, biting insects, flooding or unpredictable creatures.
Moreover, even the surviving pockets of nature in the real world are becoming packaged for our consumption. Yosemite National Park in California receives more than 4 million visitors a year. Ski tourists are becoming more demanding, too. Everybody wants a winter wonderland, despite warming temperatures. As a result, some now rely almost entirely on artificial snow production.
Obviously, we are reshaping the Earth’s ecosystem. We have become the masters of our planet and the key to the future of life on Earth. But it seems that we are not prepared for the enormous side effects of our new power over our planet. Social media and the Internet’s endless information have led to a sense of unreality, where we are no longer looking for truth, but only a kind of amazement.
Our future depends on an urgent rethink of humanity’s relationship with the natural world. We have separated ourselves from nature, yet we still want a connection with the very thing that we have turned our back on. In surrounding ourselves with artificial recreations of nature we unintentionally create monuments (纪念碑) to the very things that we have lost.
12. What does paragraph 1 mainly focus on?
A. The great impact of human activity.
B. The rapid disappearance of wildlife.
C. The unexpected change in a new era.
D. The increased usage of plastics and cement.
13. What is a common feature of man-made nature experiences?
A. They help people truly understand nature.
B. They are more attractive than real nature.
C. They offer riskless contact with nature.
D. They provide various unexpected surprises.
14. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Yosemite and ski resorts?
A. To display nature repurposed for tourism.
B. To compare artificial and natural landscapes.
C. To highlight the popularity of outdoor activities.
D. To criticize the environmental impact of modem tourism.
15. Which statement would the author most probably agree with?
A. Recreating nature produces artificial wonders.
B. Ignoring side effects raises environmental issues.
C. Seeking amazement deepens our bond with nature.
D. Balancing the human-nature relationship ensures sustainability.
A 13. C 14. A 15. D

根据第三段中的“In these places, everything repeats itself and nature is made safe — no dangerous plants, biting insects, flooding or unpredictable creatures.(在这些地方,一切都是重复的,自然被打造得很安全 —— 没有危险的植物、会叮咬人的昆虫、洪水或难以预测的生物)” 可知,人造自然体验的共同特征是提供无风险的自然接触。
根据第四段中的“Moreover, even the surviving pockets of nature in the real world are becoming packaged for our consumption. Yosemite National Park in California receives more than 4 million visitors a year. Ski tourists are becoming more demanding, too. Everybody wants a winter wonderland, despite warming temperatures. As a result, some now rely almost entirely on artificial snow production.(此外,即使是现实世界中仅存的自然区域,也正被包装起来供我们消费。加州的约塞米蒂国家公园每年接待超过400万名游客。滑雪游客的要求也越来越高。尽管气温在变暖,每个人都想要一个冬日仙境。因此,一些地方现在几乎完全依赖人工造雪)”可知,作者提及约塞米蒂和滑雪胜地,是为了展示为旅游业而被重新利用的自然。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Our future depends on an urgent rethink of humanity’s relationship with the natural world. AI tools regularly make mistakes and make up sources. By some estimates, over half of AI-driven answers have factual errors. Children’s exposure to misleading information online isn’t new. ____16____ Even children who are online only for short periods likely see false or inaccurate information. Here’s how to help them spot it.
____17____
Any parent knows the feeling of being caught in a never-ending loop (循环) of whys from their kid. ____18____ Provide informative answers, but build their thought processes, too. “Great question, what do you think? What makes you think that? How would we find out what’s right?” You’ll develop their critical thinking by emphasizing the process of reasoning, not just the outcome.
Encourage skepticism (怀疑).
Children’s skepticism is context-specific. My colleagues and I have demonstrated, for example, that even four-year-olds show basic fact-checking abilities in digital contexts under the right circumstances. When they notice that a platform contained some misinformation in the past, they seek out more evidence before accepting a new claim. ____19____ For example, if you come across a doubtful AI summary, comment on it out loud.
Practice strategic disengagement (脱离).
Critical thinking is slow and deliberate. Scrolling through a social media feed is quite the opposite. Even when a questionable post arouses skepticism, that feeling might fade as soon as a newer piece of content appears. ____20____ Taking frequent breaks can stop the habit of endless, passive consumption. Another simple strategy is to teach children that if something arouses strong emotions, they should pause.
A. Use children’s natural curiosity.
B. But now AI has worsened the problem.
C. When that desire to learn strikes, join in.
D. Evaluate the quality of children’s questions.
E. Show your child you also doubt things online.
F. Ultimately, kids’ presence in the digital landscape is a reality.
G. Parents can help children learn when to slow down and reflect.
B 17. A 18. C 19. E 20. G

C选项“When that desire to learn strikes, join in.
(鼓励怀疑精神)”可知,本空需围绕“培养孩子的怀疑态度”展开;由后文“For example, if you come across a doubtful AI summary, comment on it out loud. (例如,如果你遇到可疑的人工智能摘要,大声发表你的看法)”可知,本句需给出“家长以身作则”的建议。E选项“Show your child you also doubt things online. (向孩子展示你也会怀疑网上的东西)”既呼应“怀疑精神”,又引出后文的具体例子,符合逻辑。故选E。
【20题详解】
由本段主题句“Practice strategic disengagement. (练习战略性脱离)”及前文“that feeling might fade as soon as a newer piece of content appears. (一旦有更新的内容出现,那种怀疑感可能就会消失)”可知,本空需说明家长如何帮助孩子应对“快速浏览导致怀疑感消失”的问题;由后文“Taking frequent breaks can stop the habit of endless, passive consumption. (经常休息可以改掉无休止、被动消耗的习惯)”可知,本句需表达“帮助孩子放慢节奏、反思”。G选项“Parents can help children learn when to slow down and reflect. (家长可以帮助孩子学会何时放慢脚步、进行反思)”既呼应主题句,又引出后文的具体策略,衔接自然。故选G。

Screen Time and Us
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Screen Time and Us
As is shown in the survey, our daily screen time has soared from 1.4 hours in 2023 to 2.8 hours in 2025. Meanwhile, the popularity of online learning has risen from 40% to 55%, and social media usage has jumped from 60% to 80%.
There are two main reasons behind this trend. First, online courses and digital study tools have made learning more accessible, increasing our screen time for education. Second, social media platforms have become our major way to connect with friends, driving up daily screen exposure.
However, excessive screen time may harm our eyes and reduce face-to-face interactions. I suggest we set a daily 2-hour limit for non-study screen use and replace some online chats with offline activities. This way, we can balance the benefits of digital tools and our well-being.

Agnes Cooper appeared to be in her seventies. We were just moving a bed into the house next to her two-story home when Mrs. Cooper walked up to our front door. She looked at my twelve-year-old son, Max, and then at me, saying, “Make sure you keep that child out of my yard!”
Since a six-foot-high fence stood between our buildings, I couldn’t understand her worry. Still, I assured her, “Don’t worry.”
The next day, while Max was laughing on the phone, we heard a heavy knock from the other side of the wall. “Stop laughing!” Mrs. Cooper screamed.
That same afternoon, Max and his friend played catch in the front yard. Within minutes, they returned. Max said Mrs. Cooper had shouted at them, asking them to play in the backyard. Annoyed, I went to her house and told her that if there was ever a problem again, come to me instead of shouting at my son. As I turned to leave, I met another neighbor.
“I see you’ve met Agnes Cooper,” she smiled. “Don’t take it personally. Her husband passed away years ago. She sits by that window every day, waiting for her son, who only visits when he needs money.”
My anger softened into sympathy. Yet Mrs. Cooper continued to complain — knocking on the wall when our TV was too loud, even getting upset over a ringing phone.
Two months later, we finally settled in and decided to host a gathering for family. On the day of the party, when I was setting food out in the backyard, I noticed Mrs. Cooper watching my laughing family by the window. Her usual angry expression was replaced by a look of deep loneliness. In that moment, I finally understood her.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Minutes later, I was ringing her bell. When Mrs. Cooper opened the door, her eyes widened in surprise. I held out a plate of cookies I’d baked, smiling gently. “We’re having a little family gathering. I know we’ve had our little misunderstandings, but I’d love it if you’d join us” Her lips trembled slightly, and after a long pause, she nodded. I walked beside her as she slowly made her way to our backyard, her steps lightening a little with each move.
My husband and son hid their shock, welcoming Mrs. Cooper warmly. Max handed her a glass of lemonade and pulled out a chair for her. My husband started chatting about the weather, and soon Mrs. Cooper joined in, her voice no longer sharp. As she watched Max play with his little cousin, a faint smile crossed her face. Before leaving, she said softly, “Thank you for inviting me. It’s been a long time since I felt so warm.” From then on, the wall between us seemed to disappear — she even brought Max homemade jam the next morning, and our once-awkward neighbor became a dear friend.

4. What does the author suggest by mentioning her childhood surprise bags?
7 What can we learn from the author’s story?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Great hopes make great men.
C. Knowledge keeps heritage alive. D. Passion turns routine into purpose.
C

A To display nature repurposed for tourism.
