I used to believe charity was about grand gestures and measurable results, something best left to professionals. That changed one rainy afternoon in a city park.
An elderly man, Mr. Dawson, sat on the same bench every day, feeding pigeons with crumbs he brought in a paper bag. His clothes were worn but neat. Most people hurried past, barely noticing him. To me, he was just part of the park’s scenery.
One day, a young boy, no more than seven, approached Mr. Dawson. He wasn’t asking for money or food. Instead, he pointed excitedly at the pigeons, asking, “Which one is the boss?” Mr. Dawson’s eyes crinkled into a smile. He spent the next ten minutes explaining the pigeons’ social hierarchy (等级制度), giving some of them names. The boy listened, utterly absorbed.
The next day, the boy returned, this time with a friend. “Show them which one you named Captain!” he begged. Mr. Dawson did, and soon he was holding a small audience of three children, his voice animated. I started noticing something. The bench, once a place of solitude, now radiated a gentle energy. The children didn’t see a lonely old man; they saw a storyteller, a pigeon expert.
Curious, I finally sat beside him one Thursday. I learned he had been a history teacher. His wife had passed away, and his children lived far away. “These kids,” he said, nodding toward a small group now drawing pigeons with chalk on the pavement, “they remind me of my classroom. They think I’m giving them something-stories about birds. But they have no idea what they’re giving me.”
I realized then that I had witnessed the essence of true charity. It wasn’t about the crumbs in the paper bag. It was about the invisible exchange of warmth and purpose. Mr. Dawson offered his time and knowledge; the children offered their genuine curiosity and attention. They had unwittingly built a tiny community around a park bench, healing a silent loneliness not with pity, but with shared moments of simple, human connection.
4. How did the writer initially view Mr. Dawson?
A. As a lonely and pitiful old man. B. As a familiar but unnoticed man.
C. As a professional who was good at charity. D. As an interesting storyteller and pigeon expert.
5. What was the immediate change caused by the young boy's action?
A. Mr. Dawson started to be excited. B. Mr. Dawson's loneliness was broken.
C. Mr. Dawson's routine was interrupted. D. The author decided to join Mr. Dawson.
6. What did Mr. Dawson truly receive from the children?
A. Pity for his lonely situation. B. Food and crumbs for the pigeons.
C. A sense of being needed and purpose. D. Praise for his knowledge about history.
7. What is the true charity from this experience?
A. It lies in the sincere interaction and connection.
B. It requires professional skills and a lot of money.
C. It is a visible, one-way act of giving material things.
D. It is best performed by children because of their innocence.
C
Artificial intelligence is no longer a concept of the future; it is rapidly changing our present. While much attention is given to its benefits, a growing number of voices are raising concerns about a less obvious problem: its enormous demand for energy and the resulting environmental cost.
Training and running powerful AI models, especially the large ones that handle complex tasks like generating text or recognizing images, requires immense computing power. This computing power depends on massive data centers-buildings filled with thousands of computers running non-stop. These data centers consume electricity on a scale comparable to small cities. A recent study suggested that training a single advanced AI model can consume more electricity than 100 homes use in an entire year. As AI contains more products, from search engines to smart home devices, this energy demand is only expected to rise sharply.
This leads to a critical question: where does all this electricity come from? If the energy powering AI comes from burning fossil fuels like coal and gas, it contributes significantly to carbon emissions, which worsen climate change. While some tech companies are committed to using renewable energy, such as solar or wind power, the global energy grid is not yet green enough. The rapid expansion of AI could therefore put a huge strain on our energy resources and slow down the transition to cleaner energy.
Furthermore, AI systems also have a hidden physical cost. The powerful computer chips needed for AI generate a lot of heat and need advanced cooling systems, which themselves use vast amounts of water. In regions already facing water shortages, a large data center can impact local water supplies. Additionally, the hardware behind AI has a limited lifespan. The constant need for newer, faster chips creates a cycle of electronic waste, which is difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfills, polluting the soil and water.
Professor Elara Vance, an environmental scientist, comments, “We are rightfully excited about AI's potential to solve complex problems, including climate change. But we must be cautious. We cannot ignore the possibility that the tool we are using to fight a crisis might simultaneously be making that crisis worse. We need to develop more energy-efficient AI and ensure it is powered sustainably.” This presents a significant challenge for policymakers and tech companies alike: how to harness the power of AI without overheating our planet.
8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A To explain how algorithms (运算法则) work in detail.
B. To introduce the environmental impacts of AI.
C. To list the various benefits of artificial intelligence.
D. To predict the development of artificial intelligence.
9. Which of the following is skipped as a direct environmental cost of AI?
A. The consumption of electricity on a large scale.
B. The water consumption used for cooling systems.
C. The air pollution caused by producing AI hardware.
D. The emission of greenhouse gases from data centers.
10. What does Professor Elara Vance’s comment imply?
A. AI technology is too dangerous to be further developed.
B. The benefits of AI far outweigh its environmental costs.
C. There is a contradiction in using AI to fight climate change.
D. Technology companies have already solved the energy efficiency problem.
11. What is the author’s opinion about AI?
A. Indifferent and judgmental. B. Opposed and critical.
C. Enthusiastic and optimistic. D. Cautious and concerned.
D
When a new virus like the one that causes COVID-19 appears, developing a vaccine used to take many years. Scientists had to grow the virus in labs, which was a slow and difficult process. But a new type of vaccine, called messenger RNA (MRNA) vaccine, has changed everything. This technology was used to create effective COVID-19 vaccines in record time. It works like a set of instructions that teaches our own bodies how to defend themselves. This breakthrough is not just for COVID-19; it gives hope for fighting other diseases like flu, cancer, and HIV in the future.
So, how does it work? Traditional vaccines often put a impaired or inactive germ into our body to train our immune system. MRNA vaccines are different. They do not contain the virus itself. Instead, they carry a small piece of genetic instructions called MRNA. These instructions tell our body’s cells to make a harmless piece of protein that looks like a part of the virus. Our immune system sees this protein, recognizes it as something that shouldn’t be there, and learns how to make antibodies to fight it. If the real virus ever enters our body, our immune system is already prepared to destroy it quickly. After giving the instructions, the MRNA breaks down naturally and leaves the body. It does not enter the nucleus of our cells or change our DNA in any way.
The biggest advantage of MRNA technology is its speed and simplicity. Once scientists know the genetic code of a virus, they can quickly design the MRNA instructions in a lab. This is much faster than older methods. Because of this, scientists are now researching how to use MRNA to teach the body to fight cancer by targeting cancer cells, or to make better vaccines for diseases like malaria. This simple idea — giving our bodies a set of instructions to protect themselves — has opened a new chapter in medicine.
12. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By stating a problem simply. B. By explaining a complex process.
C. By focusing on a single achievement. D. By comparing old and new methods.
13. What does the underlined word mean?
A. Weakened. B. Improved. C. Modified. D. Transformed.
14. What can we infer from the passage?
A. MRNA vaccines contain relative virus. B. MRNA enter the cells and change DNA.
C. MRNA vaccines fight against all diseases. D. MRNA vaccines can be designed quickly.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. The breakthrough of MRNA Vaccines. B. The development of MRNA Vaccines.
C. The advantages of MRNA Vaccines. D. The principles of MRNA Vaccines.

Making tough decisions is a part of life. Whether it’s choosing a university, changing a career path, or ending a friendship, these choices can leave us feeling confused. While there’s no magic formula, a thoughtful approach can make the process clearer and less stressful.
Firstly, give yourself a clear picture. ____16____ Write down all your options. Then, for each one, list the potential benefits and drawbacks. Seeing your thoughts on paper can prevent them from swirling endlessly in your mind and help you visualize the outcomes more objectively.
____17____ It’s easy to get caught up in what others expect from you — your parents, teachers, or friends. However, this decision is ultimately yours. Ask yourself: “What do I truly want? What values are most important to me?” Aligning your choice with your own core values is key to long-term satisfaction.
Don’t underestimate the power of seeking different perspectives. ____18____ Talk to people you trust-mentors family members, or friends who have faced similar dilemmas. They might offer insights or ask questions you haven’t considered, which can shed new light on your options.
Avoid making a quick choice. For significant decisions, if possible, allow yourself a specific period to reflect, like 24 or 48 hours. This creates necessary space between the impulse to decide and the final action. ____19____
Finally, remember that few decisions are truly ever lasting. ____20____ What seems like a perfect path today might need adjustment tomorrow. The goal is not to find the one “perfect” choice, but to make the best decision you can with the information and self-awareness you have at this moment.
A. Listen to your inner voice.
B. Gather as much information as you can.
C. Life is unpredictable and full of changes.
D. This doesn’t mean you should ignore advice.
E. Start by defining the decision you need to make.
F. We often fear making the “wrong” choice forever.
G. It prevents knee-jerk (本能的) reactions and often brings a sense of calm clarity.

I knew healing my relationship with Dad was vital, but how to go about it was another story. At the time the gulf between us seemed insurmountable (无法逾越的). My feelings of being criticized and rejected by Dad were my deepest wound.
In my early years I was the apple of his eye, and he was a hero in my childhood. We played sports and games, and often went fishing together.
As adolescence approached, however, everything changed. It became clear that I was determined to forge my own path, one completely different from his expectation. In school I was having behavioral problems, being a class joker and breaking all the rules. And having my parents read my school report was a nightmare for me. Sometimes I was punished. Their disapproval made me feel even worse. Punishments only added to the hurt.
My dad had no idea how to deal with me. He became silent and distant, setting a wall and pretending that he didn’t care. That was even more painful to me than my mother’s voiced disapproval. I hated him for that, and pretended that I didn’t want anything to do with him. We lived under the same roof, but we were a thousand miles away from each other.
I continued to have trouble with school until the time I chose to drop out and pursue my interests in music. I became totally focused on my spiritual growth, which sent shivers (寒颤) through my father’s mind. There were many hard feelings between us, feelings that hardened as time went by.
For much of my twenties, I went about my life without much of a relationship with my dad. We had stopped trying to change each other, but the walls remained, thick and cold between us.
Things all began changing four years after mom told me it was time to deal with Dad. Hesitant for a long time, I finally took her advice and wrote my father a letter.

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
After sending the letter, I felt a heavy weight on my mind. Would he receive it? How would he respond? I waited for his reply, nervously opening up the mail each day. Days later, his response arrived. I read the letter again and again, disbelief washing over me — it wasn’t the distant, silent dad I knew but someone wise, tender, approachable. I plucked up my courage and called him. We both fumbled for words, but couldn’t find any. Finally, a shaky “I love you” passed between us before we hung up, both overwhelmed by the weight of the moment. His words had stirred a deep desire for me to see him, to seek for the love that we had lost for so long.
I visited my father soon after receiving his letter. My time with my father was sweet and meaningful. We sat on the porch, the familiar scent of cut grass and old wood filling the air. The awkwardness of the past seemed to melt away, replaced by a shared history of laughter, tears, and the unspoken desire for connection. Though our paths had been apart, they were now coming back together. It was a conversation filled with a quiet understanding. It was a conversation filled with shared openness. It was a conversation filled with unexpected warmth. Together, we stepped forward on a journey towards healing and forgiveness between a father and a son.
