Academic stress means the anxiety and pressure that come from school and studying. It is often related to homework, exams, reading, and competitions. Students who cannot balance their studies with family, friends, and social life usually feel more stressed and may even lose interest in learning.
Recently, researchers from Imperial College London carried out a research to study academic stress among senior high school students. A total of 355 students from both cities and rural areas took part in the research. The study showed that, out of 355 students, 35 students (10.02%) had high academic stress, 150 students (42.53%) had average stress, and 69 students (19.43%) had low stress.
The study also found that boys reported more stress than girls, partly because parents often believe boys should be able to take care of family belongings or business in the future.
The study also found that students in city schools had more stress than those in rural schools. City students often face too much homework, projects, sports, and extra classes. Teachers and parents want them to do well in everything, expect them to perform several tasks at the same time, and value them mostly for their achievements. This heavy pressure makes it difficult for students to relax and enjoy learning.
Dr. Henry, one of the researchers, explained the significance of the study: “Our findings can help teachers and parents understand the situation of academic stress among senior high school students. Teachers are supposed to create a caring and supportive learning environment to help students with their study problems. Parents should encourage them along the way and appreciate their children’s hard work, so that students feel inspired to perform well and experience less stress in daily life.”
8. What percentage of the students suffered from academic stress?
A. 10.02%. B. 71.98%. C. 42.53%. D. 19.43%.
9. What can be inferred about education in city schools?
A. It focuses more on achievements. B. It values students’ mental health.
C. It is more creative and inspiring. D. It offers more freedom to students.
10. What does Dr. Henry suggest parents do?
A. Expect their children to value their achievements.
B. Help their children deal with their study problems.
C. Create a supportive learning environment at school.
D. Appreciate their children’s hard work and inspire them.
11. Where is the passage most likely taken from?
A. A fashion magazine. B. A research journal.
C. A travel guidebook. D. A sports newspaper.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. B

Many people miss the sweet, rich taste of the tomatoes they ate in childhood and wonder why store-bought ones today have little flavor. The main reason is that modern farming has focused more on producing large amounts than on improving taste. But Chinese scientists have recently made an important discovery that may soon change this.
A team led by Professor Hang Sanwen from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has found a way to bring back the delicious flavor of tomatoes without lowering production. They discovered how to genetically (基因上地) “release the sugar brake” in tomatoes, making them much sweeter while still keeping high production. This breakthrough solves a long-standing problem in farming — how to achieve both good quantity and good quality.
The study began with taste tests of more than 100 types of tomatoes. Scientists identified 33 key compounds (化合物) that create flavor. They then examined these compounds in 400 tomato varieties from around the world and carried out detailed genetic research. In the process, they found 49 genes linked to tomato flavor, including two that control sugar levels.
The key discovery was that turning off these two genes could raise sugar levels by up to 30%. More importantly, this change does not affect the tomatoes’ size, look, or production. “This result shows the possibility of using the great genetic variety found in wild species, which has been partly lost in cultivated (人工种植的) varieties, to improve modern ones,” said Christophe Rothan, a fruit biologist at the French National Institute of Agricultural Research.
The study comes at the right time, as more people are asking for better-tasting vegetables. Thanks to this research, suppliers may be able to offer sweeter tomatoes without worrying about a drop in fruit weight or production. The team hopes that these improved tomatoes will reach the market in the near future, according to the study published in Nature.
12. What does the underlined phrase “release the sugar brake” in paragraph 2 most likely mean?
A. Stop making sugar. B. Speed up plant growth.
C. Add man-made sweeteners. D. Raise sugar levels naturally.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the study?
A. Its result. B. Its process. C. Its purpose. D. Its importance.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward the tomato genetic research?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. The Problem of Modern Tomatoes. B. The Journey of Tomato Cultivation.
C. The Breakthrough of Tomato Genes. D. The Hidden Treasure of Wild Tomato.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

故填a。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Oliver and his father were doing their weekly shopping in the nearby supermarket when he noticed a leather wallet on the ground. After picking it up curiously, Oliver found a bookstore logo on the surface, which reminded him of his part-time-job experience working at a bookstore during college.
In addition, he found a large amount of cash and a business card with a phone number on it. Oliver and his father had been living a poor life all together although his father worked hard each day. Oliver had been struggling with unemployment while actively looking for a new job.
“What if I keep the wallet?” he said to himself, the thought of financial relief crossing his mind. “I could use the money to do something.” Yet, a wave of guilt washed over him. “But Father would be annoyed if I…” he thought, holding the wallet tightly. Noticing his hesitation, Oliver’s father asked what was wrong. He told his father about the wallet and his inner struggle. With a gentle but firm voice, his father reminded him of the values, “We shouldn’t keep what isn’t ours, Oliver.”
Oliver’s face turned red with a mix of emotions. “We have bills without steady income monthly, and this could be a turning point,” he responded. His father admitted their difficulties but encouraged him to think about the right thing to do, saying, “Returning it could bring you unexpected good luck.”
Finally, Oliver decided to call the number on the business card. The owner was an elderly man, who was very grateful to take his wallet back. He explained that the money inside was prepared for his son Noah, which was important for his new business-a bookstore he was planning to open. As Oliver walked away, he felt a sense of fulfillment (成就感) from doing the right thing, but he continued to worry about his own job search and financial situation.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】示例:
Oliver received an unexpected phone call several weeks later. It was from Noah, the elderly man’s son, who spoke in a happy and warm tone. “Your honesty really touched my father,” he said. “We are opening a bookstore next month and need someone we can trust to help run it.” Oliver’s heart beat fast — this was the chance he had been waiting for. When he said he didn’t have much experience, Noah laughed softly and replied, “Being a good person is more important.” Oliver felt very excited and agreed to meet for an interview. After hanging up, he remembered his father’s words about “good luck coming from doing the right thing”. Maybe life did reward those who made honest choices, even when it was difficult.
Oliver was appointed manager of Noah’s new bookstore soon. The job not only helped with his money problems but also made him love books again. Noah, who admired Oliver’s hard work, even offered him a share of the store’s profits. As Oliver watched customers look through the books he had carefully chosen, he realized how one honest decision had changed his future. His father, both proud and playful, would say, “I told you it would work out.” Years later, when Oliver talked to a young worker who was having a hard time, he shared Noah’s lesson: “Good character opens doors that skills alone cannot.” The wallet he had once thought about keeping had, in the end, given him more than he had ever expected.

Huang Danian was born in Nanning, Guangxi, in 1958. As a boy, he showed an unusual gift in science. At 11, he made a sextant (六分仪) by himself, which could measure things very accurately. In 1982, when graduating from college, he wrote in his classmates’ albums: “It is our responsibility to make China strong again.” This promise guided his whole life.
In 1992, Huang went to the UK for further study with government support. He became a top scientist in geophysics, enjoying a good salary and a comfortable life in a big house. However, he never forgot his motherland or his youthful promise.
In 2009, learning that China urgently needed deep-earth exploration technology, he gave up his comfortable life abroad and returned without hesitation. At Jilin University, he worked tirelessly with his team. Facing foreign technological blockades (封锁), he visited many research institutes, moved into his office, and often traveled for work over 160 days a year. Once, he passed out on a plane but still held his computer tightly, showing his great devotion.
Through years of effort, Huang led his team to achieve remarkable breakthroughs. They developed the “Crust-1” drill, able to reach 10,000 meters underground, making China one of the top three countries in deep drilling. They also mastered airborne gravity gradiometer technology, making China the second country to possess it. In only 5 years, they completed research that usually took two decades, filling key gaps in space, deep-earth, and undersea exploration.
In 2016, Huang was diagnosed with liver cancer. The night before surgery, he was still writing recommendation letters for his students. On January 8, 2017, he passed away at the age of 58. People honored him as “Hardworking Huang,” who devoted his last seven years to China’s progress. In 2024, he was awarded the national title “People’s Educator.” His spirit continues to inspire future generations and light the way for China’s scientific development.
4. What does Huang’s making of a sextant at age 11 mainly show?
A. His early talent for science. B. His interest in scientific studies.
C. His strong sense of responsibility. D. His dream of becoming a physicist.
5. Why did Huang give up his life in the UK in 2009?
A. He hoped to live closer to his family. B. He wanted to keep his youthful promise.
C. He planned to change his research direction. D. He was attracted by a higher salary in China.
6. What can we know about Huang’s work after returning to China?
A. It required him to travel daily. B. He finished the research later than expected.
C. It was very difficult and tiring. D. He solved technological challenges with ease.
7. Which of the following best describes Huang according to the last paragraph?
A. Confident. B. Humorous. C. Creative. D. Selfless.

Finally Oliver decided to call the number on the business card.
