What does it mean to be British? Here, four people from various backgrounds share their personal understanding of “Britishness” — from everyday habits like queuing and tea drinking, to deeper ideas about identity, history, and belonging.
Lucy Wilson, 26, events manager
Britishness is about staying calm while enjoying small, shared habits. I find it interesting how relationships develop slowly. People don’t show their feelings directly; they use gentle opinions and dry humour. There is a kind of pleasant self-control that makes people careful about what they share. Friendliness can be hard to notice at first, but over time, strong connections form. I love how seriously the British take small things: making tea properly, respecting the queue, and talking about the weather as if it’s a shared responsibility.
Jon Turner, 55, Impact Programme lead
I don’t feel comfortable with the idea of “Britishness”. Maybe that’s because my grandparents moved here from elsewhere in Europe. Or perhaps it’s because I dislike how some people use “Britishness” to exclude others and look back to a colonial past.
Jaspreet Takhi, 40, teacher
My experience as a child of immigrants is part of my idea of Britishness. For me, being British means my two identities coexisting as one. I couldn’t be without one or the other. And that’s what Britishness is: being able to live my truth — whether that’s making tea with Yorkshire teabags, or teaching my English husband how to say Indian words while complaining about the weather. This uniqueness makes me British.
Federica Stefani, 33, journalist (currently applying for British citizenship)
Before I moved from Italy to the UK, “Britishness” felt like an abstract idea to me. Words that came to my mind were politeness, calmness, queuing, the empire, rainy weather, countryside, and a proper cup of tea. Now, after ten years here, I understand how complex this identity is. For me, it will probably grow around my “core” Italian and European identities, but I believe it will build up over time.
1. What is a feature of British people according to Lucy?
A. Direct expression of emotions. B. Sharp comments in communication.
C. Serious attention to daily habits. D. Immediate closeness in relationships.
2. How does Jon Turner feel about the idea of “Britishness”?
A. Optimistic. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Uncomfortable.
3. What do Jaspreet Takhi and Federica Stefani have in common?
A. They have mixed cultural identities. B. They are first-generation of immigrants.
C. They can speak the Indian language. D. They are applying for British citizenship.

Deep in the mountains of Jiangxi Province, Li Xinrong holds up a freshly collected egg for his livestream viewers. He cracks it open. The rich yellow yolk shines. “Our chickens run free in the forest,” he says. Within minutes, his eggs are sold out. The small forest eggs reflect a rapid growth of China’s forest-based economy.
Li works at a farm in Guangchang County. Not long ago, the forests around here produced almost no direct financial benefits. “We used to call them ‘sleeping resources’,” says a local villager. That is changing. The county has launched a plan to turn its forests into a source of income — without destroying them.
Guangchang has a forest coverage rate of over 70 percent. For years, those trees just stood there. Now, farmers grow medicinal herbs and mushrooms under the shade of the forest canopy (树冠层). They raise chickens and collect camellia (山茶花) oil. The forest provides natural temperature control, clean water, and protection from harsh weather.
One local company grows mushrooms on hundreds of hectares of forest land. Instead of using chemicals, it uses waste from the local lotus seed industry — dried lotus shells — as material for growing mushrooms. “Farmers used to burn or throw away these shells,” says the company manager. “Now they sell them to us.” The forest-grown mushrooms taste better and sell for four times the price of greenhouse mushrooms.
The results are clear. By 2025, the county’s forest-based economy had reached over 2 billion yuan, raising the annual income of more than 10,000 farming families by over 3,000 yuan each. “Demand is so strong that we can hardly stay abreast,” as Li said, “so the local authorities plan to further expand forest-based industry.” Now, the forest is no longer sleeping. It has come alive — and so have the Guangchang people.
4. Where does Li Xinrong sell eggs?
A. In a local store. B. In a trade fair. C. On the internet. D. On the street.
5. What makes “sleeping resources” come alive?
A. Rapid growth of economy. B. Environmental destruction.
C. High rate of forest coverage. D. Local government’s proposal.
6. What can we know about the forest-grown mushrooms?
A. They need chemical fertilizers. B. They are of high economic value.
C. They are nutritious but taste bad. D. They replace greenhouse mushrooms.
7. What does the underlined phrase “stay abreast” probably mean?
A. Keep up with. B. Stay positive. C. Stay in touch. D. Keep focused.
C
Imagine wandering through a dark forest for hours, then traveling all the way home — in a straight line. Bull ants do this every night, and scientists have long wondered how. It turns out they use a previously unknown type of Moon compass (指南针) — never seen before in the animal kingdom.
To figure it out, Cody Freas, a behavioral ecologist, and his colleagues trapped bull ants the moment they left their nests. They allowed or denied the insects the chance to observe the Moon by grouping the individuals in a clear bottle or a black box. Then they brought them to an unfamiliar setting 200 meters away — an abandoned basketball court— to test which direction they traveled home.
After comparing their separate paths, the team concluded the behavior of ants that could see moonlight was consistent with what’s called a time-compensated (时间补偿的 ) lunar compass. Essentially, the insects observe how quickly the Moon moves to estimate the relative position of their home and update that prediction with time.
The dynamic speed of the Moon’s movement complicates this strategy. It rises slowly, speeds up when it’s at the highest point in the sky, and then slows down as it sets. Ants could be terribly misled if they don’t account for that, but the researchers discovered the insects have an inborn sense that the Moon’s speed shifts, and they compensate for it.
The discovery makes bull ants the first known animals to navigate (导航) using this type of compass. Navigating with the Moon presents several advantages. Unlike stars, which other insects use to navigate, the Moon is not blocked by light pollution, and it can be bright enough to breakthrough clouds. Bull ants also have specialized eyes that allow them to see circular (环形的) patterns of polarized moonlight spreading across the sky, so they can sense the Moon’s position, even when it’s below the horizon.
Freas says the study has given him a new appreciation of the Moon as a navigational aid. “The more time you spend under the Moon,” he says, “the more it seems like a much better helper than you originally think.”
8. Which aspect of the study does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The process. B. The purposes. C. The background. D. The findings.
9. What helps bull ants navigate correctly according to the text?
A. Their familiarity with the path to home.
B. Their tolerance for the Moon’s movement.
C. Their independence from time compensation.
D. Their adjustment to the Moon’s speed change.
10. What can be inferred from the last but one paragraph?
A. Navigating with the Moon is reliable for the bull ants.
B. Bull ants’ eyes are characterized by circular patterns.
C. Light pollution affects bull ants’ sense of direction.
D. Bull ants can see the Moon below the horizon.
11. What does Freas think of bull ants using Moon compass?
A. It’s controversial. B. It’s challenging. C. It’s mysterious. D. It’s amazing.
D
New research has found that scientists studying sea-level rise have been using methods that underestimate how high the water already is. One result is that hundreds of millions more people worldwide are already living dangerously close to the rising ocean than previously estimated.
The study, published in Nature, shows that coastal sea levels are on average eight inches to a foot higher than many global maps and models suggest. The differences are especially large in Southeast Asia and Pacific nations. Scientists have often been working from the wrong starting point when calculating what land and populations might be affected in the future.
That matters as policymakers turn to science to understand how much land and how many people may be affected as the world warms and oceans rise. The new study has identified far-reaching problems in the method that researchers often use to understand coastlines and how they might change in a warming climate. It checked 385 other papers and found that less than 1 percent had correctly assessed where sea levels are today.
For decades, scientists have used a satellite-based gravitational-field model. However, other instruments can measure real sea level and reveal local differences from factors like currents, winds and tides, which can also influence sea levels but are not included in the gravitational-field model. Scientists can most accurately estimate sea level when both pieces of the puzzle are combined correctly.
But the study found that hasn’t been the case. Some 90 percent of the studies relied only on the gravitational-field method. Another 9 percent used both kinds of data but failed to combine them properly.
It was 10 years ago, on the shores of the Mekong delta in Southern Vietnam, where Dr. Minderhoud, the senior author of the paper, first realized there may be a difference. He said the study shows that methods of studying sea level rise that seemed to work relatively well for coastlines in Europe or the United States led to bigger gaps in other parts of the world.
Torbjem Tornqvist, a professor at Tulane University who was not involved with the study, said the findings were a real “wake up call” with wide implications.
12. Why is the research finding of great importance?
A. It helps improve technologies of measuring sea levels.
B. It has persuaded scientists to change research methods.
C. It explains why sea levels keep rising around the world.
D. It offers policymakers more reliable scientific evidence.
13. What is the big problem with the commonly used method?
A. It relies on invalid data.
B. It leaves out real local factors.
C. It overestimates the risks.
D. It ignores the effect of global warming.
14. What can be inferred from Dr. Minderhoud’s experience in Vietnam?
A. Local observations are less reliable than satellite data.
B. Methods used in Europe may not apply well globally.
C. The Mekong delta is the most threatened coastal area.
D. Scientists need longer time to detect sea-level changes.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Sea Levels are Higher than Assumed B. Climate Change Threatens Human Survival
C. Global Warming Causes Sea Level Rise D. Satellite Data Improves Research Accuracy

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?
My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn't been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my Xrays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said," There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this years tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself," Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won't have a successful season."
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.
Paragraph 1:
After I got the" all clear" from my orthopedist I was going to get to work.

Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective.

C 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第一段中的“Deep in the mountains of Jiangxi Province, Li Xinrong holds up a freshly collected egg for his livestream viewers. He cracks it open. The rich yellow yolk shines. “Our chickens run free in the forest,” he says. Within minutes, his eggs are sold out. (在江西深山里,李新荣(音译)对着直播镜头举起一枚刚捡到的土鸡蛋。他把鸡蛋磕开,金黄饱满的蛋黄色泽鲜亮。 他介绍道:“我们家的鸡都是在山林里散养的。”短短几分钟,他直播间的鸡蛋就销售一空。)”可知,李新荣是通过网络直播的方式进行销售的。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The county has launched a plan to turn its forests into a source of income — without destroying them.(该县启动了一项计划,在不破坏森林的情况下将其变成收入来源。)”
根据第四段中的“The forest-grown mushrooms taste better and sell for four times the price of greenhouse mushrooms.(林下种植的蘑菇味道更好,售价是温室蘑菇的四倍。)”
根据最后一段中的“Demand is so strong that we can hardly stay abreast,” as Li said, “so the local authorities plan to further expand forest-based industry.”(李说:“需求如此强劲,以至于我们几乎无法stay abreast,所以当地政府计划进一步扩大林基产业。”)”

A 9. D 10. A 11. D

根据第二段“To figure it out, Cody Freas, a behavioral ecologist, and his colleagues trapped bull ants the moment they left their nests. They allowed or denied the insects the chance to observe the Moon by grouping the individuals in a clear bottle or a black box. Then they brought them to an unfamiliar setting 200 meters away — an abandoned basketball court — to test which direction they traveled home.(为了弄清楚这一点,行为生态学家科迪·弗雷斯和他的同事们在公牛蚁离开巢穴的那一刻就抓住了它们。他们通过将公牛蚁分别放在一个透明的瓶子里或一个黑盒子里,来允许或阻止它们观察月亮。然后,他们把它们带到一个200米外的不熟悉的环境——一个废弃的篮球场——来测试它们回家的方向。)”可知,本段主要介绍了研究的过程。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The dynamic speed of the Moon’s movement complicates this strategy. It rises slowly, speeds up when it’s at the highest point in the sky, and then slows down as it sets. Ants could be terribly misled if they don’t account for that, but the researchers discovered the insects have an inborn sense that the Moon’s speed shifts, and they compensate for it.(月亮运动的动态速度使这一策略复杂化。它上升缓慢,在天空最高点时加速,然后在下落时减速。如果蚂蚁不考虑这一点,它们可能会被严重误导,但研究人员发现,这些昆虫有一种天生的感觉,即月亮的速度会发生变化,它们会对此进行补偿。)”可知,公牛蚁会根据月亮速度的变化进行调整,从而帮助它们正确导航。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Navigating with the Moon presents several advantages. Unlike stars, which other insects use to navigate, the Moon is not blocked by light pollution, and it can be bright enough to breakthrough clouds. Bull ants also have specialized eyes that allow them to see circular (环形的) patterns of polarized moonlight spreading across the sky, so they can sense the Moon’s position, even when it’s below the horizon.(利用月亮导航有几个优点。与其他昆虫用来导航的星星不同,月亮不会被光污染所阻挡,而且它的亮度足以穿透云层。公牛蚁还有特殊的眼睛,可以看到极化的月光在天空中扩散的圆形图案,所以即使月亮在地平线以下,它们也能感知到月亮的位置。)”可知,利用月亮导航对公牛蚁来说是可靠的。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Freas says the study has given him a new appreciation of the Moon as a navigational aid. “The more time you spend under the Moon,” he says, “the more it seems like a much better helper than you originally think.”(弗雷斯说,这项研究让他对月亮作为导航辅助工具有了新的认识。他说:“你在月亮下待的时间越长,它就越像是一个比你最初想象的更好的帮手。”)”可知,弗雷斯认为公牛蚁使用月亮指南针是令人惊叹的。

D 13. B 14. B 15. A
根据第三段中的“That matters as policymakers turn to science to understand how much land and how many people may be affected as the world warms and oceans rise.(这一点至关重要,因为政策制定者需要依靠科学来了解,随着全球变暖、海平面上升,多少土地和人口将会受到影响)”可知,这项新研究修正了错误数据,能为政策制定者提供更可靠的科学依据。
根据第四段中的“However, other instruments can measure real sea level and reveal local differences from factors like currents, winds and tides, which can also influence sea levels but are not included in the gravitational-field model.(然而,其他仪器可以测量真实海平面,还能体现洋流、风力、潮汐等局部差异因素,而这些影响海平面的局部因素并未被纳入重力场模型中)”可知,常用测算方法的核心问题是遗漏了真实的局部环境影响因素。
根据第六段中的“He said the study shows that methods of studying sea level rise that seemed to work relatively well for coastlines in Europe or the United States led to bigger gaps in other parts of the world.(他表示,这项研究表明,适用于欧美海岸线的海平面研究方法,在世界其他地区会产生巨大的数据偏差)”可知,欧美适用的研究方法,无法很好适配全球其他沿海地区。
根据第一段中的“New research has found that scientists studying sea-level rise have been using methods that underestimate how high the water already is.(新研究发现,研究海平面上升的科学家一直使用低估实际海平面高度的测算方法)”以及全文围绕实测海平面高于以往预估数值、剖析测算误差展开论述可知,文章核心主旨是海平面实际高度比以往设想的更高。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
After I got the" all clear" from my orthopedist I was going to get to work. Practices were going to start in two weeks and I was determined to get back on the court. My hunger for success made me play and work out for two hours every day before the season. Through practices, I would hit the gym and try to build up the strength that I had before the injury.
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective. I had the most successful season of my career. I made it to the finals. Although I truly wanted to win, I knew that it was a great accomplishment for me to be in that position even not in the first place. The injury was almost a good thing because I proved to myself that I am capable of achieving goals that I strive for, through hard work of course. That season was by far the most rewarding season of my career. I felt so accomplished at the end of the season. Hard work always pays off.
