Whenever you want to give up your dream, think of Chris Nikic. On November 7, 2020, 21-year-old Chris Nikic made history as the first person with Down Syndrome to try and complete an Ironman. Organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, it requires athletes to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run a full 26.2-mile marathon — in under 17 hours!
The event, which took place in Florida, began early in the morning with a two-lap swim in the Gulf of Mexico. Chris, who was tied to his coach for safety, completed the course well within the time limit.
The 112-mile bike ride, which Chris rode alone, was full of uncertainties. Not used to drinking water while riding, he had to make multiple stops. To make matters worse, the young athlete was attacked by an army of red ants whose nest he accidentally stepped on during a break. He also had a bleeding knee after crashing while speeding downhill. Despite these setbacks, Chris managed to complete the lap before the 5:30 pm cut-off time.
The competition’s final challenge — a two lap 26.2-mile run along the waterfront — started smoothly. However, Chris was tired out by the tenth mile. But with encouragement from his coach and cheering bystanders, the youngster somehow managed to cross the finish line in 16 hours, 46 minutes, and 9 seconds — almost 15 minutes under the 17-hour time limit.
Chris is no stranger to overcoming challenges. Born with two holes in his heart, he underwent surgery at just five months old. He was too weak to walk independently until he was four. Due to his Down Syndrome, every expert his parents spoke to focused on the limitations rather than the possibilities.
To Chris, this race was more than just a finish line and celebration of victory. It’s about being an example to other kids and families that face similar barriers.
4. What does the underlined part “an Ironman” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A person. B. An organization. C. A competition. D. An artwork.
5. Which of the following best describes Chris’s bike ride experience?
A. Struggling. B. Romantic. C. Pleasant. D. Smooth.
6. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 5?
A. Make more comparison. B. Add background information.
C. Draw a conclusion. D. Introduce a new topic.
7. What can we learn from Chris’s story?
A. Not everyone is perfect. B. Failure teaches success.
C. Life is full of choices. D. Nothing is impossible.

More than 56% of the world’s oceans have changed color to an extent that cannot be explained by natural variability, said a team of researchers from the UK and the US. tropical oceans close to the equator (赤道) in particular have become greener in the past two decades, reflecting changes in their ecosystems, according to the study published in the journal Nature.
The color of the ocean comes from the materials found in its upper layers. For instance a deep blue sea in the Pacific Ocean might have very little life in it, but a green color means there are ecosystems, based on phytoplankton (浮游植物), plant-like microbes which contain chlorophyll (叶绿素) and form the basis of a food web which supports larger organisms such as krill, fish, seabirds and marine mammals.
It’s not clear exactly how these ecosystems are changing, said Stephanie, senior research scientist in MIT. “Ocean ecosystems are finely balanced and any change in the phytoplankton might decimate the food chain, causing an imbalance in the natural organization of ecosystems. Such imbalance will only get worse over time if our oceans keep heating. It will also affect the ocean’s ability to act as a store of carbon, as different plankton absorb different amounts of carbon,” she added.
While the researchers are still working to unpick exactly what the changes mean, what is clear, they believe, is that the changes are being driven by human-caused climate change. The researchers monitored changes in ocean color from space by tracking how much green or blue light is reflected from the surface of the sea. They analyzed color variation data from 2002 to 2022 and then used climate change models to simulate (激发) what would happen to the oceans both with additional planet-heating pollution and without. Not surprisingly, the color changes matched almost exactly what scientists predicted would happen if greenhouse gases were added to the atmosphere-that around 50% of our oceans would change color.
8. How does the author develop Paragraph 2?
A. By making comparison. B. By presenting research findings.
C. By giving examples. D. By displaying more opinions.
9. What does the underlined word mean in the third paragraph?
A. Damage. B. Construct. C. Acquire. D. Display.
10. What is the root of the ocean color change?
A. The materials found in the ocean surface. B. The imbalance in ocean ecosystem.
C. The changeable climate. D. The destructive human activities
11. What might be the best title of the text?
A. Climate changes bring greener oceans B. Ecosystem works differently in the ocean
C. Scientists are further exploring the sea D. secrets about the ocean are being unlocked
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. A
根据第二段中的“The color of the ocean comes from the materials found in its upper layers. For instance, a deep blue sea in the Pacific Ocean might have very little life in it, but a green color means there are ecosystems, based on phytoplankton (浮游植物), plant-like microbes which contain chlorophyll (叶绿素) and form the basis of a food web which supports larger organisms such as krill, fish, seabirds and marine mammals.(海洋的颜色来自其上层发现的物质。
根据第三段中的“Ocean ecosystems are finely balanced and any change in the phytoplankton might decimate the food chain, causing an imbalance in the natural organization of ecosystems. Such imbalance will only get worse over time if our oceans keep heating. It will also affect the ocean’s ability to act as a store of carbon, as different plankton absorb different amounts of carbon.(海洋生态系统处于微妙的平衡状态,浮游植物的任何变化都可能decimate食物链,导致生态系统的自然结构失衡。如果我们的海洋持续升温,这种失衡会随着时间的推移愈发严重。这也会影响海洋作为碳储存库的能力,因为不同的浮游生物吸收的碳量不同。)”可知,海洋生态系统平衡脆弱,浮游植物的变化会引发食物链破坏、生态失衡等连锁反应,因此“decimate”意为“破坏、摧毁”,与“Damage”语义相近。故选A项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“While the researchers are still working to unpick exactly what the changes mean, what is clear, they believe, is that the changes are being driven by human-caused climate change. (虽然研究人员仍在努力弄清楚这些变化的确切含义,但他们认为,明确的是这些变化是由人为引起的气候变化所驱动的。)”可知,研究通过数据监测和模型模拟,证实海洋颜色变化的根源是人类活动导致的气候变化。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“More than 56% of the world’s oceans have changed color to an extent that cannot be explained by natural variability, said a team of researchers from the UK and the US. Tropical oceans close to the equator (赤道) in particular have become greener in the past two decades, reflecting changes in their ecosystems, according to the study published in the journal Nature.(英国和美国的一组研究人员表示,全球超过56%的海洋颜色发生了变化,其程度无法用自然变异来解释。根据发表在《自然》杂志上的这项研究,特别是赤道附近的热带海洋在过去二十年里变得更绿了,这反映了它们生态系统的变化。)”和第四段中的“what is clear, they believe, is that the changes are being driven by human-caused climate change.(他们认为,明确的是这些变化是由人为引起的气候变化所驱动的。)”可知,文章核心围绕“气候变化导致海洋颜色变化(尤其是变绿)”展开,介绍了变化现象、成因、研究验证及潜在影响,“气候变化带来更绿的海洋”精准概括全文主题,适合作为最佳标题。故选A项。

Reading often serves as a bridge, connecting people through shared stories and ideas. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.
Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.
Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says. “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.
BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual (虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.
12. Why are book groups mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce BookCrossing. B. To show popularity of reading.

13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A public place. B. An adventure.
C. The book. D. The identification number.
14. What will a BookCrosser do with a book after reading it?
A. Meet other readers to discuss it. B. Pass it on to another reader.
C. Keep it safe in his bookcase. D. Mail it back to its owner.
15 What is the best title for the text?
A. Online Reading: A Virtual Tour. B. Electronic Books: A new Trend.
C. A Platform Ties People with Books. D. A Book Group Brings Tradition Back.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. C

Shanghai, known for its towering skyscrapers and busy streets, might seem an unlikely place for beekeeping. Yet, Marco Sentinelli, an Italian businessman, is determined to make it happen.
Marco’s relationship with bees stretches back to his days in Italy two decades ago. When the fruit trees he planted were not producing anything, he realized the absence of bees was to blame. He then began to study beekeeping. ____16____
Upon moving to Shanghai seven years ago, Marco initially thought his beekeeping days were over.___17___Before long, the local government came to ask him to help with pollination (授粉) services, and some of his friends also brought their children to get up close with bees.
In 2024, Marco launched a non-profit organization called “Urban Bees Shanghai,” which trains volunteers to manage beehives (蜂巢) in communities across the city.____18____ It has attracted about 2,000 followers, many of them young people who want to do beekeeping purely out of interest.
____19____ The reasons lie in the rapid expansion of cities and the public’s lack of awareness of the importance of bees. Additionally, since many people fear bees, their nests are often mistaken for wasp (黄蜂) nests and completely removed.
To help more people learn about bees, Marco is advocating for responsible beekeeping within the city. He has already taken the initiative to educate local fire stations on safe bee removal, in the hope of saving local hives. ____20____
Marco envisions a greener, more biodiverse Shanghai. “If you place beehives on a farm, you can harvest 10 to 20 times more crops,” he said. “If we extend this into our city, we can only imagine how many more flowers and plants we can have.”
A. So far, he has rescued six or seven hives.
B. Soon, he was drawn by this fascinating hobby.
C. It’s important to draw young people to the beehives.
D. The organization now manages 20 beehives across the city.

【答案】 A Learning Experience
Last term, I joined an English speech contest themed “My Hero”. At first, I was too nervous to speak fluently, even forgetting lines during practice. My teacher encouraged me to record myself and analyze the mistakes. I spent every evening polishing the script and practicing pronunciation.
On the contest day, I still felt nervous but tried to stay calm. Though I didn’t win the first prize, the audience’s warm applause made me proud.
This experience taught me that growth lies in persistence. No matter how difficult it is, as long as we keep trying, we will harvest progress. It also made me more confident in learning English.

Not knowing how long we would be away, we boarded the ship with heavy hearts.
Eight weeks later, an letter arrived from Sandy, saying Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Father froze as he read the news. My mother and I tried to comfort him, but he just sighed.
Sandy tried to find Spider. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seemed he just kept running and searching for us. The dog became our daily topic and we all hoped he was still alive.
We returned to Australia two years later and my father immediately began his own search. He made many calls and posted Spider’s photos online to get more responses.
Then, one cold Saturday morning, four months after our return, my father received a picture of “an old yellow dog” from Gina, an elderly lady living on her own 375 kilometers away.

More than 56% of the world’s oceans have changed color to an extent that cannot be explained by natural variability, said a team of researchers from the UK and the US. tropical oceans close to the equator (赤道) in particular have become greener in the past two decades, reflecting changes in their ecosystems, according to the study published in the journal Nature.
The color of the ocean comes from the materials found in its upper layers. For instance, a deep blue sea in the Pacific Ocean might have very little life in it, but a green color means there are ecosystems, based on phytoplankton (浮游植物), plant-like microbes which contain chlorophyll (叶绿素) and form the basis of a food web which supports larger organisms such as krill, fish, seabirds and marine mammals.

E. Its population is reducing sharply because of our fear of them.
F. However, in 2023, he felt the pull to return to his beloved hobby.

When I was eight, my mother fell ill. My family decided to move to London, where my mother could take treatment. The day before we left, Father sent Spider, our five-year-old dog, to his friend Sandy, who promised to look after him while we were overseas.
