In 2010, Brad Montague learned that a West Tennessee homeless shelter had a desperate need for socks, an item often overlooked because used pairs are usually too worn to donate. Without fresh socks, unhoused people easily develop frostbite (冻疮). Determined to find a solution, Montague took the problem to a dozen teens at the middle school in Henderson, Tennessee, where he volunteered. Together they invented “Socktober”, a simple call for the community to donate new socks every October.
The first drive ended with more socks than Montague’s car could hold, and hand-delivering them while greeting recipients with “Happy Socktober!” became, he recalled, “an uplifting and emotional experience.” Montague posted the results on social media. In 2013, he reinforced (推广) the idea with a “Kid President” web episode — written and directed by Montague — and urged viewers to start local sock drives. The video became famous, and participation exploded. Now, Socktober is held annually in every U. S. state and in Canada, Australia, and India. Montague estimates “millions” of new pairs have been donated, stressing that “anyone can do it,” since socks are inexpensive, universally needed, and easy to share.
To sustain the movement, Montague’s website targets nearby shelters and offers step-by-step tips for successful drives. Schools have become the engine of the tradition. Special-education teacher Rachel Taylor at Elmore Park Middle in Bartlett, Tennessee, has guided students to give roughly 10,000 pairs over the past eight years, calling Socktober “so much more than just socks — it’s love, generosity, and joy.” Eleven-year-old fifth-grader Anderson Brown agrees: “We should show that t we care about everybody.”
Reflecting on the movement’s quiet power, Montague says, “There are challenges and darkness in the world, but there is also another story happening that involves the quiet work of thousands.”
4. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. How “Socktober” was started. B. Why unhoused people get frostbite.
C. The first Socktober’s result. D. What teens did for homeless people.
5. How did Montague reinforce “Socktober” according to Paragraph 2?
A. By organizing national fundraising events. B. By putting up posters in middle schools.
C. By producing an online video to spread it. D. By asking the government for help.
6. What can we know from the passage?
A. Anderson Brown never supported the activity.
B. Schools play an important role in continuing Socktober.
C. The first Socktober drive failed to collect socks.
D. Socktober is now only held in the United States every year.
7. What is Rachel Taylor’s attitude to “Socktober”?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Unconcerned. D. Positive.

Walking has long been thought of as one of the best forms of exercise for whole health. This activity can strengthen your heart, lower your blood pressure, keep your bones strong and burn calories. When walking outside, you gain the extra benefits that come from spending time in nature, but it’s not always possible to take your daily exercise outside. When the weather or other factors drive you indoors, consider a treadmill (跑步机) workout instead.
Treadmills are among the top three most popular pieces of equipment at US health clubs, according to the 2022 IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report. Before you jump on a treadmill and begin walking at your preferred pace, however, consider a workout where you change both the pace and incline (坡度), which can result in much more efficacious training.
For those who can change both their walking speed and the treadmill incline, fitness experts recommend some types of interval training, which involves repeatedly exchanging the intensity (强度) of your workout and/or the activities you’re doing. Gillian Dalby, vice president of fitness at CAZ Training Club in Newport Beach, offered two easy possibilities.
Get on a treadmill and do one minute of walking, one minute of jogging and one minute of running for a total of 18 minutes by turns. “This keeps your mind busy, and it’s an incredible way to build speed,” Dalby said. Walk for one minute with no incline, one minute at a 4% incline and one minute at 8%, then repeat this sequence five times. If either workout is easy, double the time to 36 minutes or do both back-to-back.
“If your gym has both kinds of treadmills, try both out,” Dalby said. “At the end of the day, what will keep you continuing with your workouts and stay enjoyable? The more fun you have working out, the more likely you are to continue your fitness journey.”
8. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To lead into the topic. B. To show the result of a study.
C. To call on people to walk outside. D. To introduce a new kind of treadmill.
9. What does the underlined word “efficacious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Passive. B. Confusing. C. Efficient. D. Disappointing.
10. Which of the following statements will Dalby agree with?
A. People can only exercise for 18 minutes every day.
B. Enjoying themselves will make people keep on exercising.
C. People should keep themselves active and happy all day.
D. All gyms should have different kinds of treadmills.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to exercise on a treadmill.
B. Why walking can benefit people greatly.
C. How to exercise when the weather is bad.
D. Which types of treadmills are popular at health clubs.
D
Concrete (混凝土) is the world’s most used material after water. Because it already surrounds us in the built environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity — turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun: rechargeable batteries are necessary when the wind dies down or darkness falls.
Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a traditional battery does. But one team now reports that it has developed a rechargeable original model that could represent a more than 10 times increase in stored charge, compared with earlier attempts.
A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. Still, “you can make a battery out of a potato,” notes Aimee Byrne, a structural engineer at Technological University Dublin. In a future where sustainability is key, she likes the idea of buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.
According to Emma, the study co-author, although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts: 200 square meters of it “can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption of a typical U. S. home”, this is not enough to compete with today’s rechargeable devices. “We’re getting milliamps out of concrete batteries — we’re not getting amps (安培),” Byrne says. “We’re getting hours rather than days of charge.” But she adds that “concrete batteries are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs”.
The earliest traditional batteries were large and heavy. Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today’s small devices. Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution. “The whole idea is that we’re looking far into the future,” she says, “We’re playing the long game with it.”
12. What do the researchers want to use concrete to do according to Paragraph 1?
A. Build larger houses that can hold more people.
B. Protect the houses from the sun and strong wind.
C. Store electricity and turn buildings into giant batteries.
D. Replace traditional rechargeable batteries directly.
13. What does Byrne want to show by mentioning the potato?
A. Only food-related materials can be made into batteries.
B. Potato batteries are more efficient than concrete batteries.
C. Materials that seem ordinary can be used for battery-making.
D. Potatoes are the most commonly-used material for batteries.
14. What can we know about the new concrete battery?
A. 200 square meters of it can completely power a U. S. home.
B. It produces large amps of electricity.
C. It is as efficient as traditional batteries.
D. It stores over 10 times more charge than before.
15. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. Concrete batteries need more advancement.
B. Concrete batteries solved existing problems.
C Concrete will replace traditional batteries soon.
D. Difference between traditional batteries and concrete batteries.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Writing was my passion. I had always been the best writer in my class. But then, the balance of my little universe shifted — Ethan transferred (转学) to our school.
Ethan was quiet. He seemed lost in his own world, and the other students didn’t know how to approach him. He was often alone, and it was clear that he felt out of place. I didn’t pay much attention at first. But then came the day that changed everything.
It was a writing class like any other, until our teacher assigned us a creative essay. I dove into my work, confident as always. When it was time to share, I listened politely as my classmates read their essays, but my mind was already racing ahead to the praise I knew would come my way. Then, Ethan’s turn arrived. He stood up, his voice soft but steady, and began to read. His words painted a picture of an old, forgotten library, where time stood still and the pages of ancient books whispered stories of forgotten worlds.
When he finished, the room fell silent. Then, thunderous applause spread across the class. Our teacher’s eyes shone with delight. “Ethan,” she said, “you have a rare gift. With your talent, you’re bound to win the upcoming writing competition.”
The words hung in the air like a challenge. I had always been the star of our literary world, but now, it seemed, a new light had appeared — one that threatened to outshine mine.
That evening, I had a talk with my father. When I finished, he sighed softly and said, “Jealousy is a thief that steals our joy. It’s easy to see Ethan as a rival (对手) , but perhaps he’s just a fellow traveler on the same journey. Instead of pushing him away, why not reach out? You might discover that his light doesn’t dim (使黯淡) yours — it only makes the world brighter.” At that moment, I seemed to realize something.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, I approached Ethan during lunch.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that day forward, Ethan and I met regularly to write and discuss our work.

【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. A

C. Concrete will replace traditional batteries soon.
D. Difference between traditional batteries and concrete batteries.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. A

The advantages and disadvantages of the robots in daily life
Robots bring many advantages to our daily life. They can do housework like cleaning and cooking, making our homes more comfortable. In public places such as hospitals, robots assist doctors and nurses, which improves efficiency. However, robots also cause problems. As they take on more jobs, some people may lose their work, and this is what worries many workers. Moreover, robots lack real emotions, so they can’t have emotional communication with people.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, I approached Ethan during lunch.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that day forward, Ethan and I met regularly to write and discuss our work.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The next day I approached Ethan during lunch. I took a deep breath and walked towards the table where he sat alone, his nose buried in a book. “Hi, Ethan,” I said, trying to sound casual. “I really loved your essay in class. It was amazing.” He looked up, surprise flashing across his face. A small smile played on his lips as he thanked me. I then invited him to join me in preparing for the upcoming writing competition. To my relief, he agreed.
From that day forward, Ethan and I met regularly to write and discuss our work. We shared our ideas, gave each other honest feedback, and encouraged one another. His unique perspective broadened my horizons, and I found my own writing improving. When the day of the competition arrived, we walked in side by side, full of confidence. In the end, we both won awards. It was a moment of pure joy. Father was right: Ethan’s light didn’t dim mine — actually, it made mine shine brighter.
