Apply and Fly-Fly-in Programs for College Visits
页
(20251112)
College fly-in programs are opportunities for high school students to visit colleges over
the course of a few days and meet students from all around the world with various interests.
The visit is at no cost to the student.
You should apply if you really want to go to that college or if you're not quite sure what
living there would be like.Applying takes time,so don't do it unless you're seriously
considering the school-that time could be better spent on your college applications and
internships(实习).
Timeline and Tips:
1.Do your research early.Make a list of your target colleges.Do they have a fly-in
program?When is the application due?
2.Write and edit essays.By doing so,you're taking baby steps toward the process of
submitting the demanding college essays.
3.Submit!(Preferably a couple of days before the deadline, just in case.)
4.Wait.Generally,students will receive results at least two weeks before the event.
Results Day:
Read the email carefully.
Waitlisted? If you wish to remain on the list, you may have to email back within a
certain time frame(it'll say in the email)to keep your spot.
ACCEPTED!Congratulations!Make sure you do the following:
1.Submit permission forms on time.Do not lose your spot by forgetting to do so.
2.Pack at least two days before!Last-minute packing leads to forgotten items.
3.Join a group chat.Tapping"add"on group chats is easier and faster than swapping
phone numbers.Plus, you will probably only get the numbers of the handful of students
you'll actually keep in touch with.Who knows, you might end up at the same college!
21.Why are fly-in programs offered?
A.To assess students'levels.
B.To develop students'interests.
C.To expose students to college life.
D.To collect student feedback on colleges.
22.What are applicants of fly-in programs advised to do?
A.Plan for potential fees.
B.Make a list of programs.
C.Avoid last-minute submission.
D.Provide evidence of research.
23.Which of the following methods does the text suggest for reaching other attendees?
A.Emails.
B.Messaging groups.
C.Phone calls.D.In-person meetups.

Ben was eleven years old when he spotted his neighbour,Julie, working in her garden.
He popped his head over the fence, and said to her,"I've seen you're very good with a lawn

mower(割草机)and gardening tools. The hedge(树篱)over the pathway near here has
become so overgrown that I am planning to cut it back myself.Would you like to help out?"
Julie loved the idea of helping Ben and their community. They agreed to cut the hedge
the following Sunday.Ben's brother Josh, aged 8 at the time, also came along to help. All
three of them tackled away at it until they reduced it.
They posted photos of their handiwork on "Our Malmesbury",their local Facebook
Group. The community reaction was amazing. The comments and reactions just kept on
coming. The whole town of Malmesbury seemed to embrace their team spirit and felt
inspired to follow their lead. Many people raised their hands to volunteer and do more to
keep their town tidy. With many willing hands, their town has transformed. Before, the town
looked a bit run down, but now,the place looks cleaner and tidier.
To keep the projects going,Ben created a Facebook page and website to support their
projects.Their Facebook Page "Helping The Community Of Malmesbury"currently sits at
669 members and is a place for all the locals to share what litter picking and cleaning up
they have been up to.Ben also managed to sort funding through local businesses and
associations. The funding has helped them obtain trees, plants, tools, and gardening
equipment. When community members plan a clean-up,they can contact them via the
website to access any tools and equipment they need to complete a project.
Ben is so pleased that 6 years later, the clean up campaign is still in full-swing.He has
just been so overwhelmed with the support over the years that he cannot thank the
community enough.Their mission will not stop.

How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra (or enjoy
页

working out number puzzles.Maths is all around us,from working out how to split the bill
after a meal to calculating your household bills. But many people fear the moment when
they have to deal with numbers and figures, and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It
can seem depressing, but this "maths anxiety"is perfectly normal, and you're definitely not
alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don't necessarily show our ability.
Research traces maths anxiety back to school experiences.Nervous teachers may
unintentionally pass their fears to students, and girls are particularly vulnerable.Data from
34 countries reveals striking numbers:31%of teenagers feel nervous about solving
problems,33%stress over homework,and nearly 60%fear difficult classes.Shulamit Kahn,
a Boston University expert, argues that positive role models-especially female teachers-
are critical to building confidence in young learners.
Writing for BBC Future,David Robson says,"It's not clear why maths causes so much
fear compared to geography. But the fact that there's only one correct answer-there's no
room for bluffing-might make you more worried about under-performing."And once we
suppose we're not a"maths person",we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why maths can bring us out in a sweat. That
seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can
loosen their hold on you and recommend children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a
threat. In fact,we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
28.What does the author think of"maths anxiety"?
A.It doesn't mean poor ability.
B.It affects almost everyone from birth.
C.It naturally disappears with age
D.It only troubles school children.
29.What does "there's no room for bluffing"mean about maths problems?
A.They require creative thinking.
B.They can be understood differently.
C.They include many maths steps.
D.They demand exact answers
30.How do psychologists advise reducing maths anxiety?
A.Ignore it and move on to harder problems.
B.Adjust exams to lower stress for students.
C.Voice your worries and try again
D.Replace daily maths with puzzle games.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How Do We Learn Maths Effectively?
B.Is Maths Worth Learning?
C.Are Boys Better at Maths than Girls?
D.Should We Fear Maths?

In fact, voice cloning has far-reaching influences.A brief sample of a particular
individual voice can be used to train an AI model, which can then speak any given text
sounding like that person. The feature is to be included in iPhone's new operating system
IOS 17 to help people who may be in danger of losing their voices.ElevenLabs,an AI
startup, offers users the chance to create their own clones in minutes. When generating a
recording, the system also offers a controller that allows users to choose between variability,
a lifelike intonation ()and stability, similar to a calm newsreader, both accurate.
With cloning coming, voices claiming to be someone may prove to be fakes. That
disturbs financial industry(金融业),which uses voice as an important identification(识别),
In journalism, fewer people will trust news based on recordings. The opposite problem will
arise when public figures refuse to admit their genuine recordings. Now,ever more people
caught up in illegal behaviors will be attracted by the defence,"It wasn't me."
Creative industries could face challenges too.Voice actors'skills, trained over a
lifetime, can be taken away in a matter of seconds. The Telegraph recently reported on actors
who had mistakenly given up rights to their voices, making it possible to clone them for
nothing. But as the old saying goes,a coin has two sides.Val Kilmer, who has lost much of
his voice to throat cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for Top Gun:Maverick.
And some others may be spared heading to the studio for retakes.
32.Why does the author talk about Destefano's experience?
A.To explain why Destefano was cheated.
B.To draw readers'attention to voice cloning.
C.To teach people how to recognize fake voices.
D.To praise a mother's love for her daughter.
33.What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A.Cloning voices can be variously styled.
B.IOS trains people disabled in speaking.
C.Cloning one's voice is time-consuming.
D.AI learns human voice from texts.
34.What impact may voice cloning make?
A.Financial industry will abandon voice identification.
B.Broadcasting will disappear in journalism.
C.Public figures will not make recordings.
D.Bad guys will use it as an excuse to escape punishment.
35.What is voice cloning's influence in creative industries?
A.Negative.
B.Beneficial.
C.Double-edged.
D.Short-termed.

Have you ever considered whether to spend on a vacation or buy a new phone? While
buying something new brings an immediate rush of excitement, studies show that this
happiness disappears quickly.36This article explores why experiences are more
satisfying than material belongings and improve well-being in ways objects can't
37_Hedonic adaptation(享乐适应),the idea given by psychologists Brickman
and Campbell, means even the most exciting buying becomes ordinary over time. For
example, when you buy something new, like a phone or a piece of clothing, the excitement
is high at first, but it soon becomes part of your daily routine.
Another reason why experiences outweigh material belongings is that they tend to
include other people, deepening relationships and creating connections.Whether traveling
with family or trying a new restaurant with a friend, shared experiences strengthen social
relationships.38They offer a sense of belonging and community.
That's not to say material things don't have their place-some pieces bring joy and
meaning, especially if they have emotional value.A well-loved guitar or a thoughtful gift
can carry emotional significance. However, the happiness from objects is often tied to their
practical use or related memories, rather than the pieces themselves.39
So,what's your take on this?Have you ever spent money on something you wanted for
so long, only to realize it didn't last? And what's an experience you spent money on that still
brings a smile to your face whenever you think about it?40
After all,it's not the
things we collect but the memories and connections we create that truly make life rich.
A.And they are the necessities in our daily life
B.One reason lies in a theory put forward in 1971.
C.Maybe it's time to rethink what we spend money on.
D.These connections are significant sources of happiness.
E.Things are meaningful because of the connections objects create.
F.Instead, spending on experiences creates longer-lasting happiness.
G.The key is balancing spending on material goods and experiences.

visitors'faces to look like their favorite animals.When I visited,I got a tiger face-painting,while my
parents got monkey designs.
Opposite the shop, there's an open-air food stand with a huge variety of dishes. If you're hungry.
you can buy some tasty snacks for lunch.Eating lunch at the zoo is exciting because you can hear
animal sounds all around.Isn't that fantastic?
So,why not go and have fun at the event?
