Huang Xuhua, an outstanding Chinese scientist, left us on February 6th, 2025. But his remarkable deeds and unwavering spirit will always be engraved in our hearts and continue to illuminate China’s path forward.
Born in Guangdong Province in 1926, Huang witnessed the sufferings of his homeland under foreign aggression during his childhood. These painful memories spurred him to study hard, vowing to use his knowledge to fortify the nation.
In the 1950s, when China embarked on the challenging journey of developing nuclear submarines, Huang Xuhua stepped up fearlessly. Given the scarcity of advanced technology and resources at that time, it was like climbing a steep mountain. However, he and his team accepted the challenge. To safeguard the project’s secrecy, they cut off contact with the outside world, even from their families. Huang Xuhua bid farewell to his hometown for years.
During the design process, they confronted numerous hurdles. Designing a nuclear reactor, for instance, was extremely difficult. Without access to foreign expertise, they could only rely on their own research. Using simple tools like abacuses and slide rules, they painstakingly calculated and experimented. Another key issue was ensuring the submarine’s underwater stability. Through countless simulations and tests, they gradually overcame these obstacles.
Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was successfully built and tested, making China a member of the exclusive club of countries with such capabilities. Huang Xuhua didn’t rest on his laurels; he continued to contribute to submarine technology advancements. His dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the “Medal of the Republic” in 2019.
Now, as we remember him, we understand that his life is a source of inspiration. We, especially the younger generation, should inherit his spirit. Let’s take up the mantle, face challenges bravely, and work hard to build a stronger China, making his legacy truly come alive.
24. What can we infer from the fact that Huang Xuhua and his team cut off contact with the outside world?
A. They did not care about their families at all.
B. They wanted to avoid being disturbed by their friends.
C. There was no way to communicate with the outside world at that time.
D The nuclear submarine project was of great secrecy and importance.
25. Which tool did Huang Xuhua and his team use for calculations according to paragraph 4?
A. Advanced computers. B. Abacuses and slide rules.
C. Foreign calculation software. D. Modern scientific calculators.
26. When was China’s first nuclear submarine successfully built and tested?
A. In the 1950s. B. In 1926. C. In the 1970s. D. In 2019.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The life story and great contributions of Huang Xuhua.
B. The significance of the “Medal of the Republic” in China.
C. The process of building China’s first nuclear submarine.
D. The difficulties faced by scientists in developing nuclear technology.

People of different nationalities seem to vary in their use of hand gestures according to a study that seems to support the idea that Italians, in particular, “talk with their hands”.
Maria Graziano and her colleague Marianne Gullberg, both at Lund University in Sweden, asked 12 people from Sweden and 12 from Italy to describe a video from a children’s TV show to a friend who hadn’t seen it, while examining their hand gestures. In the study, the Italians made an average of 22 gestures per 100 words of their speech, compared with the Swedes’ 11.
But more interesting was the difference in the function of the hand gestures, says Graziano. The Swedes mostly used “referential gestures” to demonstrate the events of the story or the characters’ actions, for example showing a rolling pin (擀面杖) when describing baking. The Italians made these gestures as well, but also had more “pragmatic gestures” with which they commented on the story or introduced new information, such as a hand movement to indicate a new character.
Currently, Barbara Tversky at Stanford University in California says that exactly why these results occurred is unclear, and she wants to see further research in larger groups of people with a more diverse mix of nationalities. A possible explanation is that different cultures’ understanding and explanation of short videos could lead to varying ways of organizing speech content and impact gesturing.
Also, Graziano hopes to study the hand gestures used in different texts, and with different relationships between the speakers, to explore how various cultures use hand gestures to communicate and tell a story. “Hand gestures are produced in all languages and cultures, and they are not a mere decoration of speech; they are closely related to what we are saying and how we want to say it,” Graziano concluded.
28. What can we know about the participants (参与者) according to paragraph 2?
A. They were of the same age. B. They were from two different countries.
C. They were asked to write a summary. D. They didn’t like children’s shows.
29. What’s the key difference in hand gesture functions between Swedes and Italians?
A. Italians add more pragmatic gestures.
B. Swedes rarely use referential gestures.
C. Swedes only focus on commenting on stories.
D. Italians never introduce new characters with hand gestures.
30. What did Graziano agree with?
A. Gestures have no real meaning.
B. Different cultures use the same gestures to tell stories.
C. Hand gestures are more than decorations for speech.
D. Cultural differences in gestures require no further study.
31. Where can we read the passage?
A. In a paper on physics. B. In a magazine about culture.
C. In a science fiction. D. In a magazine about environment.
D
A group of farmers in Nigeria are using a new method to grow crops from moisture (水汽) in the air. The method, known as aeroponics, does not use soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air and take in nutrients from water mist. The method could make a big difference in places where huge amounts of land have been made unfarmable.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. Ogbole says they are working hard to end the seasonal food shortage in Nigeria. “It is just farming anytime during the year, meaning we can plant crops anytime during the year, and we can harvest anytime during the year.”
But setting up the aeroponics farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000. And people in Abeokuta boycotted this nontraditional method of farming. It took a lot of effort to change those people’s minds about it. In fact, in Nigeria, about 30 million hectares of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. In the north, only 49 percent of the land is fertile, a situation that worries traditional farmers. Aeroponics, however, does not require traditional farm work or much land. Nutrients for the plants are controlled by a recycling system, greatly increasing productivity.
Dr. Phillip Ojo, Director-General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council, says the government welcomes the new farming method. Ojo notes that with aeroponics, farmers can quickly increase planting materials.
The agricultural industry represents about 40 percent of Nigeria’s economy. The government wants to greatly expand this percentage. For now, most farmers lack the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They also need access to high-quality seeds to guarantee (保证) better harvests. Technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
32. What can be known about aeroponics?
A. It is not affected by the seasons. B. It helps crops draw nutrients from the soil.
C. It will make the condition of the soil worse. D. It is aimed at bringing back farmland.
33. Why are Ogbole and his team working hard?
A To reduce the aeroponics farm.
B. To end the seasonal food shortage in Nigeria.
C. To get more support from other countries.
D. To help the poor all over the world.
34. What does the underlined word “boycotted” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Welcomed. B. Approved. C. Obtained. D. Resisted.
35. What is Dr. Phillip Ojo’s attitude to aeroponics?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Opposed.

Tom was a young boy from a poor family. His father worked as a street sweeper waking up early every morning to clean the streets in the biting cold. His mother, too, worked outdoors, doing various jobs to help make ends meet. Tom couldn’t bear to see his parents struggle, especially in the freezing weather. He desperately wanted to do something to help them.
For weeks, he saved every penny he could. He did small jobs around the neighbourhood, running errands (跑腿) and helping neighbours. Each time he earned a little money, he put it aside. His goal was clear: to buy a warm coat for his father and gloves for his mother so they would be warm during the winter.
On Christmas Eve, he went to the store and carefully selected a warm coat and a pair of soft gloves. But when he reached the counter (柜台), he found that he didn’t have enough money to pay. The total cost was more than he had saved.
Disappointed, Tom stood there, unsure of what to do. Just then, Mrs Green, a kind neighbour, walked by and noticed his distress. She stopped and asked him what was wrong. Tom explained his situation and expressed how much he wanted to keep his parents warm in the cold.
Knowing the struggles the family faced, Mrs Green smiled and said without hesitation, “Don’t worry, I’ll help you out. You go ahead and buy those gifts. It’s a wonderful thing you’re doing for your parents.”
Tom was so grateful for Mrs Green’s support. He hadn’t expected anyone to help him, especially in such a kind way. Tom thanked her over and over again.
“You’re a thoughtful boy,” Mrs Green said. “Your parents are lucky to have you.”

【67题答案】
【答案】On Christmas Day, Tom woke up early in the morning. He placed the wrapped gifts on the table and waited, heart pounding with excitement. When his parents returned from work, their eyes widened at the sight of the surprise. With a wide smile, he presented the gifts he had carefully prepared for them. His parents were deeply moved, tears welling up in their eyes. “Tom, they are the best gifts we could ever receive,” his father said, hugging him tightly. Overwhelmed with curiosity, they asked Tom how he managed to afford such wonderful presents.
Tom eagerly shared his experience in the store with his parents. His mother was touched by the story. Later, they visited Mrs Green, bringing cookies they had baked as a token of their appreciation. Mrs Green greeted them with a warm smile, inviting them inside to share the festive spirit. Together, they enjoyed a joyful Christmas, exchanging stories and laughter. Tom’s father, with a reflective smile, remarked, “This is the essence of Christmas — care, love and kindness.” It was a beautiful reminder that kindness, no matter how small, can truly transform lives.
