B Firstly, Mohiuddin was looking at global environmental issues with the hope of finding one that his entrepreneurial (企业家的) spirit could deal with. He would finally focus on plastic use, the overreliance on it in society, and the dangers of plastic pollution in the form of microplastic particles (颗粒). In particular, he wanted to find an alternative to one of the most common plastic products used today: the plastic shopping bag. According to The Better India, he started studying a biodegradable polymer (生物可降解聚合物) that was first formed and researched in the 1980s called PBAT. At the time, it was made with corn and potatoes. After identifying a suitable class of machinery to produce the PBAT bags in Gujarat, his speech on PBAT received nearly $100,000 in seed funding that allowed him to start the project. “I tried to balance both my studies and the operations of the company — from collecting raw material, helping workers to produce bags, to delivering the products in the market,” Mohiuddin told The Better India, “I used to sleep in a corner in the factory.” Overcoming bankruptcy (破产), university studies, and long-term unfinished orders, Mohiuddin’s startup company finally started to make profits, and today produces almost 500,000 bags per year, with a total revenue of $180,000. “I am glad I am able to contribute my part. Not having a normal college life can be tiring sometimes, but in the end, it is all worth it. I feel content when I go back to sleep. But much more needs to be done to make India plastic-free, and I will continue to strive for it.” he adds. 4. What is the primary focus of Mohiuddin’s entrepreneurial efforts? A. To develop replacements for plastic shopping bags. B. To improve traditional plastic products. C. To make full use of corn in producing. D. To lengthen the use of plastic shopping bags. 5. What was the result of Mohiuddin’s speech on PBAT? A. He received a sum of money for his studies. B. He gained the fund to start his project. C. He got to know many celebrities. D. He decided to put off the project. 6. What can be inferred about Mohiuddin from paragraph 3? A. He solved many kinds of environmental issues. B. He was willing to lose personal comfort for his goals. C. He considered learning more important than business. D. He sought advice from experts for developing his business. 7. How does Mohiuddin feel about the progress he has made? A. Confused. B. Regretful. C. Satisfied. D. Challenged. C We all know that a powerful body posture may help people feel more confident. But will it work on students? A new study by researchers from the Martin Luther University (MLU) of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the connection. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school. Some body postures don’t need further explanation. When a man sits with his arms crossed behind his head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one’s body and a bent back, on the other hand, typically mean anxiety and insecurity. “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also have a great influence on how a person feels,” explains Robert Körner from the Institute of Psychology at MLU. Research on powerful body postures tries to find out the extent to which a certain body posture might influence a person’s feelings and self-confidence. Up to now, most of the research has been about studying the effects on adults. Körner’s study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to recognize and understand the body postures of others,” the professor adds. The researchers carried out their experiment with 108 fourth graders. One group was to assume two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms folded in front of them and their heads down. The children then finished a series of psychological tests. The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school. “Here, powerful body postures had the strongest effect on the children’s self-confidence,” says Körner. “Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals. 8. How does Körner feel about the short-term effects of powerful postures? A. He thinks they are useless. B. He believes they are significant enough for teachers to adopt in class. C. He argues they are too strong and harmful. D. He claims they last for years. 9. What is the new research on powerful body postures mainly about? A. What the most popular postures are. B. How children’s postures differ from adults’. C. Why body language can express a person’s feelings. D. What effects postures have on students’ feelings. 10. What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Strange. B. Obvious. C. Unclear. D. Manageable. 11. What is Körner’s attitude to teachers’ applying the findings in teaching? A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Supportive. D A single-minded, tireless drive — that’s what it takes to be successful. Be “all in”. Burn the boats behind us. That message is rooted in our society, from self-help books to social media influencers all telling us that we need to commit more. The world continually sends the signal to narrowly define your goals. In my senior year, I became the fastest high-school miler in the country when I ran a 4:01 mile. When my progress as a runner reached a bottleneck, my sports psychologist told me a story about a world-class runner who had become stuck while struggling to make the transition from success in college to Olympic-level performance. “What helped her break through?” I asked. “Knitting (编织).” he replied. She had taken up knitting to relax and to take her mind off running. I was too young and stubborn to follow the advice. I pushed myself harder—but never ran faster than my high-school record or broke a 4-minute mile. In the years since, working as a coach with top-class performers, I kept noticing that their single-minded focus was getting in their way. Their focus on achieving specific goals had become a constant, disabling signal that they were not measuring up. This single-minded approach was backfiring. Research backs this up. Researchers at Michigan State University looked at over 100 years of Nobel Prize-winning scientists and found they were more likely than their less-accomplished peers to have creative interests outside of their research. The prize-winners were 22 times more likely to perform, sing or act as a hobby; 12 times more likely to pursue creative writing; and about 7 times more likely to participate in a craft like sculpting. To be sure: The more we care, and the more our job or pursuit feels like a part of who we are, the harder we’ll work. That’s helpful to a certain point. But such narrowing comes with a shortcoming. As we get rid of other parts of ourselves, and that one activity becomes an ever bigger presence, fear starts to take over. We don’t just want to succeed. We have to. When outcomes are all that matter, our immediate response isn’t to become a fighter. It’s to retreat (退缩). So, the secret is to go in a different direction. When the world screams to go narrow, top-class performers learn to go broad. 12. How did the author respond after hearing the story of the world-class runner? A. He trained with greater effort. B. He adjusted his training methods. C. He took some time off from running. D. He adopted knitting as a stress-reliever. 13. What do we know about Nobel Prize-winning scientists in the research? A. They spent more time on research than others. B. They avoided entertainments to maintain focus. C. Their diverse hobbies contributed to their achievements. D. Their research covers a wider range of fields than their peers. 14. What does the author think of the single-minded approach? A. It is unavoidable. B. It is unacceptable. C. It is recommendable. D. It is effective. 15. Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text? A. Why “All in” Is No Recipe for Success. B. Breaking Through Fear in Competitive Fields. C. Why Hobbies Outweigh Professional Training. D. Narrowing Down Your Focus to Achieve More. Traveling is a great way to experience new cultures and landscapes, learn about different ways of life, and simply have an adventure. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that. Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace. “So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy. They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters. Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 秘密★启用前 2025年秋期新纪元云贵发展中心第二次月考 英语(高二) (考试时间120分钟,满分150分) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? A. Confused. B. Regretful. C. Satisfied. D. Challenged. 4. A 5. B 6. B 7. A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Supportive. B 9. D 10. B 11. 根据最后一段中的““Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term.(“教师们可以尝试看看这种方法是否对学生有帮助。”然而,科尔纳表示,对这种技术的期望应该适度。其效果只是短期的) ”可知,科尔纳认为有力姿势的短期效果值得教师在课堂上尝试,同时提醒期望需适度。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But will it work on students? A new study by researchers from the Martin Luther University (MLU) of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the connection. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.(但这对学生有用吗?哈勒 - 维滕贝格马丁・路德大学的研究人员开展了一项新研究,旨在寻找这种联系。研究确实提供了证据,表明简单的身体姿势能帮助学生在学校感觉更好)”可知,这项新研究主要关注姿势对学生情绪的影响。故选D项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school.(采取开放姿势的孩子比另一组孩子表现出更好的情绪和更高的自信心。在涉及学校的问题上,这种效果尤为manifest)”可知,前文已说明开放姿势的积极效果,后文强调在学校相关问题上效果更突出,因此manifest意为“明显的”,与obvious同义。故选B项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals.(“教师们可以尝试看看这种方法是否对学生有帮助。” D A single-minded, tireless drive — that’s what it takes to be successful. C He took some time off from running. A 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第三段中的“I was too young and stubborn to follow the advice. I pushed myself harder—but never ran faster than my high-school record or broke a 4-minute mile.(我当时太年轻固执,没有听从这个建议。 故选A项。 根据第五段中的“Researchers at Michigan State University looked at over 100 years of Nobel Prize-winning scientists and found they were more likely than their less-accomplished peers to have creative interests outside of their research.(密歇根州立大学的研究人员研究了100多年来的诺贝尔奖得主科学家,发现他们比成就较低的同行更有可能在研究之外拥有创造性兴趣)”可知,诺贝尔奖得主科学家拥有多样化的爱好,这一特点与他们的成就相关,可推断其多样爱好助力了成就。 根据第四段中的“In the years since, working as a coach with top-class performers, I kept noticing that their single-minded focus was getting in their way.(从那以后,作为一名顶尖选手的教练,我一直注意到他们一心一意的专注正在阻碍他们)”和“This single-minded approach was backfiring.(这种一心一意的方法正在产生适得其反的效果)”可知,作者发现专注单一目标会阻碍进步,甚至适得其反,因此认为这种方法不可取。 通读全文,并结合第一段中的“A single-minded, tireless drive — that’s what it takes to be successful. 要“全身心投入”)”和第四段中的“In the years since, working as a coach with top-class performers, I kept noticing that their single-minded focus was getting in their way.(从那以后,作为一名顶尖选手的教练,我一直注意到他们一心一意的专注正在阻碍他们)”、“This single-minded approach was backfiring.(这种一心一意的方法正在产生适得其反的效果)”可知,文章通过作者自身的经历和研究论证这种单一专注的方法存在弊端,顶尖成功者往往拥有广泛兴趣。 故选A项。 Traveling is a great way to experience new cultures and landscapes, learn about different ways of life, and simply have an adventure. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However, it was soon that they realized that they couldn't solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their idea among youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach. One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges are and what advice they have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added, “keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world. 词汇激活 行为类 ①利用:take advantage of/make use of/employ ②解决:solve/address/find a solution for ③参与: take apart/ get involved 情绪类 ①受鼓舞的,激励的:motivated/inspired ②积极:positive /active 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
