It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
4. Which word can best describe the author’s daughter?
A. Wealthy. B. Thoughtful. C. Easy-going. D. Humorous.
5. Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet?
A. It cost too much. B. It was looking dirty.
C. There was not enough room for his new coat. D. It was not sent to someone in need.
6. What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old?
A Telling his daughter. B. Buying a new one soon.
C. Donating it to charity. D. Sending something else to charity.
7. What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A. Giving fills our wants. B. Love is the key to joy.
C. The more you give, the more you lose. D. A coat is large enough to cover our wants.

Elephant Transit Home
In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats (栖息地). People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).
Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and nurture baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).
A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.
At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.
8. What does the underlined word “nurture” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Set free. B. Relate to. C. Focus on. D. Care for.
9. What do we know about the ETH?
A. It changes elephants’ habitats for the better.
B. It receives about $125,000 each year.
C. It helps to keep baby elephants safe.
D. It protects 30 elephants every year.
10. Why do the workers reduce human connection with the elephants?
A. To study them better in a natural environment.
B. To help them make it in the wild as a herd.
C. To provide them with more living space.
D. To train them to stay away from hunters.
11. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce an animal protection site.
B. To show the ways of wildlife protection.
C. To explain the threat baby elephants face.
D. To persuade the readers to protect elephants.

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online. Whether reading news or e-books, people are spending more time eyeballing (盯住) screens. While online reading opens up a great deal of knowledge to people, there are some disadvantages too, such as eyestrain, headaches, as well as difficulty in focusing on the text. Now a new reading system, Bionic Reading, developed by Swiss typographic designer Renato Casutt, can help people overcome these issues, and most importantly, it aims to help people read faster online and develop a more in-depth understanding of written content.
The reading system improve the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. To make it short: some parts of the words are displayed in bold (粗体). As a result, the reader only focuses on the highlighted letters and lets the brain center complete the rest. Your brain can “read” faster than your eyes, so by essentially reducing the number of letters your eye needs to look at, you can read faster while still preserving the full context.
Cassult discovered the system by accident. He was working on designing a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it if he sectioned it off. He worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to adjust it.
A preliminary (初步的) study was conducted by the Swiss Institute InnoSuisee, but more research is needed before it can be definitively shown that the system improves reading. Some people with ADHD (多动症) prove that Bionic Reading helped them focus and comprehend what they are reading. Other people don’t seem to notice a big difference compared to regular text. There’s also no evidence to suggest Bionic Reading is any better than regular text. The best way to know if the Bionic Reader helps you read better online is to try it yourself.
12. What is the main purpose of Bionic Reading?
A. To point out people’s reading problems.
B. To teach people necessary reading skills.
C. To reduce readers’ screen time and eye stress.
D. To improve people’s reading speed and comprehension.
13. What does the underlined phrase “artificial fixation points” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Words displayed in capital letters. B. Useful expressions.
C. Difficult sentences in the text. D. Bold letters.
14. What do some people with ADHD think of the system according to the text?
A. It is complex. B. It can be beneficial.
C. It needs to be improved. D. It has little effect on them.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. A reading project for ADHD. B. A research on language learning.
C. A system to help with online reading. D. A tool for treating reading disability

A. Telling his daughter.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者分享了自己处理两件穿旧了的冬季外套的经历,表达了自己对于处理欲望的感悟:真正填满欲望的不是索取而是给予,一个人给予的越多,拥有的也就越多。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift. (我并不是真的需要一件新的,但我想要一件,有一天我不经意地向女儿提起了这件事。她是一个如此亲切、和善的女孩,我应该猜到接下来会发生什么。几个星期后,她送给我一件新的冬季外套作为礼物)”可知,作者的女儿在他不经意地提到想要一件冬季外套后,很快就给他送了一件作为礼物。由此可知,女儿是体贴的。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. (然而,每天当我打开衣柜的时候,总有一些事情困扰着我。在寒冷的冬天,我那件旧的但仍然很好的外套就这么坐在那里,没有给任何人保暖,这似乎是一种遗憾)”结合下文作者把旧衣服捐到慈善机构可知,作者看到旧外套感到遗憾,是因为自己没把这件衣服送去帮助有需要的人。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. (它的状况太糟糕了,甚至无法捐赠给慈善机构)”和“I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead. (我真的不需要新的,也许我可以找点别的东西捐给慈善商店)”可知,第二件旧外套糟糕到无法捐赠,于是作者决定找别的物品送往慈善机构。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have. 故选A项。

A preliminary (初步) study was conducted by the Swiss Institute InnoSuisee, but more research is needed before it can be definitively shown that the system improves reading.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. C
