A Culture Tour to Xi'an
Last week's autumn break saw our school's “A Culture Tour to Xi'an” come to life, offering students a vivid journey. We visited world-famous attractions: the Terracotta Army left us in awe of Qin Shi Huang's legacy, while walking along the ancient City Wall let us soak up the charm of imperial capitals. We learned intriguing details about Xi'an's role as a Silk Road hub, and savored delicious local treats.
The tour received overwhelming praise. Students said it not only broadened their horizons but also strengthened our pride in Chinese culture. This meaningful experience will surely inspire us to explore more of our nation's rich heritage.

With my camera in hand, I began to gain some confidence. Summoning up my courage, I took the initiative to ask several drama club members whether I could take some pictures for them. Reluctant as they were, they ultimately nodded, pretending to perform an opera. Moves and gestures, which I believed wouldn’t fail to gratify them, were captured from different angles. No sooner had they browsed the pictures than they were dumbfounded by my aptitude for framing a shot. Days later, the notice came that the photography competition was scheduled to be held. Without the slightest hesitation, I picked out my favorite work in my camera, submitting it to the organizer, followed by my name topping on the award list.
The photography competition gave me more than an honor. Undoubtedly, a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of happiness temporarily overwhelmed me, as I managed to prove to my parents that I outperformed Lily in photography. Most importantly, however, other competitors’ works caught my attention, all of which showcased unique characteristics my work didn’t possess. It was not until then that I cast no doubt on the existence of everyone’s strengths and values. In other words, exposing your advantages to others was merely a matter of time. Now, gone are the days when I poured much time into blind imitation, but it is what I have to go through toward a self-discovery journey.

Four Best Beach Spots in South Carolina
Morris Island
What was once a war fort (堡垒) is now an island without residents in the Charleston Harbor marked by the state’s tallest lighthouse. Today, this island is only accessible by boat. While boat rentals are available, it is highly recommended that visitors book one of the tours that will take you to the island with a local expert who can tell you all about the area’s history and marine life.
Huntington Beach State Park
Located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Huntington Beach State Park offers historic sites, fishing, hiking, guided walks, and, of course, a three-mile beach. There are over 300 species of birds here, making the park a wonderland for birders. Visitors can also spot deer, sea turtles, and more. Plus, camping is available at the park for those who want to spend more time enjoying its natural beauty.
Surfside Beach
Also known as “The Family Beach”, Surfside Beach’s focus on families goes beyond its nickname—it identified itself as the first autism-friendly (自闭症友好) travel destination in the world in January 2016. Visitors can approach the sandy beach from 36 different entry points, some of which provide wheel chair access. There are also mini-golf courses and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Fripp Island
Head for this small region for kayaking, golfing, and breathtaking natural views. Watch some of the 175 species of birds that live along the ocean and salt marsh(沼泽), or other local animals such as alligators, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles. Book a place with a marsh view at Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort to enjoy pools, on-site dining, and the busy activity center.

Few people have achieved fame for coming in last place. That is why Michael Edwards, or “Eddie the Eagle”, became a rather unexpected hero. Unlike most athletes, Eddie did not come to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games for a medal. He came simply to compete. In doing so, he realized his dream.
At first, Eddie tried to make the British national ski team but failed. Then he chose the riskiest event, ski jumping. No British skier had ever competed in that sport, but having no competitors meant that Eddie had a better chance of qualifying (取得资格) for the 1988 Olympic. Games. It also meant there was no support for him. Eddie had no coach, equipment, or financial support, but what he had was determination. Not afraid of what he lacked, Eddie set out to learn his chosen sport, training himself for nearly 2 years. And he managed to meet the qualification for Olympic ski jumping, and landed himself in the 1988 Olympic Games. Eddie was determined to compete, and while he came in last, he did manage to land his jumps, and he still holds the British record in that sport. Coming in last place actually made him the star of the Olympics and the true embodiment (化身) of the Olympic spirit.
Many of us may have experienced similar limitations during our own youth that prevented us from following our dreams. Eddie’s rejection (拒绝) from the British national ski team is a story that many of us can relate to. Rejection can be devastating, but we can struggle to find the courage to put ourselves back out there, or the creativity to find another way.
24.What was Eddie’s dream?
A.To become a hero.
B.To join the national ski team.
C.To take part in the Olympics.
D.To develop his ski jumping skills.
25.Why did Eddie choose ski jumping as his event?
A.It was popular among British skiers.
B.It meant a better chance to win a medal.
C.He would get the support he needed in this event.
D.He would be more likely to be included in the Olympics.
26.What made Eddie the star of the Olympics?
A.His caring little for fame.
B.His professional performance.
C.His breaking the British record.
D.His determination to follow his dream.
27.What does the underlined word “devastating” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Unforgettable. B.Disastrous. C.Sudden. D.Confusing.
C
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly changing how we live and work. Some people worry AI will take over jobs, but there is a better way to see the future. AI teamwork means using smart tools to help humans, not replace them.
Erik Brynjolfsson, a professor at Stanford University, studied how AI can help workers. His team looked at over 5,000 customer service workers using an AI helper. This tool, trained on millions of service records, gave quick advice during customer chats. The results showed that workers with AI’s help solved 14% more problems each hour. For new or less-skilled workers, the improvement was even bigger—34%. By dealing with large amounts of information quickly, AI let humans focus on what they do best: helping others.
The study also found that workers using AI were less likely to quit their jobs. This shows AI can make work easier and more satisfying. As AI spreads in workplaces, leaders must put people first. Jann Spiess, another Stanford expert, says people’s debates miss the point. They always ask, “Is AI better than humans?” instead of “How can AI and humans work together?” Kuang Xu, a technology professor, adds that AI should always aim to improve human decisions.
Real-world examples prove this works. In hospitals, AI makes patient-information-recording go by itself, allowing doctors to focus on finding illnesses and patient care. In modern factories, AI managers quality checks, helping workers to deal with creative problem-solving. These examples show AI improves efficiency (效率) while keeping human strengths.
The key point is clear: AI is not a threat (威胁) but a tool for progress. If designed to support humans, it can increase creativity, reduce stress, and prepare us for future challenges. As Brynjolfsson says, the future lies in joining machine speed together with human wisdom (智慧) .
28.What can we learn from Erik Brynjolfsson’s study?
A.AI replaces workers in modern factories.
B.AI makes workers less happy with their jobs.
C.AI helps workers solve more problems quickly.
D.AI only works for skilled customer service workers.

In Frozen II, the ice queen Elsa returns with her magical control over snow and ice. Snowflakes (雪花) fall from her fingertips and she can use ice to fight fire. How closely does Elsa's icy touch approach reality? Elsa isn't alone in building with ice. In our world, designers can make fantastic structures from ice, too.
Obviously, ice melts (融化) when it 's warm. Melting aside, Elsa's palace still might not be all that strong— structurally anyway. Ice is brittle. "If you're trying to construct a large building, it'd be very hard to get ice to hold a lot of weight,” explains Kenneth Libbrecht, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology.
A small igloo, a small round house built from hard snow, would last longer. Elsa probably should have a spare igloo. Her palace looks to be a single crystal (结晶体) and a crystal of ice is weaker in some directions than others. But in an igloo, each block has thousands of tiny ice crystals in it, each turned a different way. So, no one direction would be weak, as it likely would be in this palace.
"Elsa could strengthen her palace by adding a second material— kind of like the corn in cookies,” Kenneth Libbrecht said. That still inspires some designers, including Arno Pronk from the Eindhoven University of Technology. His team builds structures with ice mixtures. Because the materials are cheap and the structures are short-term, you can do a lot of experiments, he says. "If you strengthen ice with materials like wood pieces or paper, it becomes stronger,” Pronk notes.
Besides, other scientists are thinking about making other ice structures. These researchers are figuring out what it might take to build ice homes on Mars for human explorers. Ice walls might even help protect astronauts from harmful lights, improving safety and creating livable environments for long-term missions on Mars.
"Though still only a concept, our ice home is not science fiction,” says Sheila Thibeault, a physicist from NASA."The current idea is to cover the ice in plastic. This would help give the ice some structure,” she adds.
32.Why is Elsa's ice magic in Frozen II mentioned?
A.To remind us of the power of snow.
B.To connect to real-world applications.
C.To compare fantasy with physics rules.
D.To stress the structural limitations of ice.
33.What does the underlined word "brittle” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Hard B.Smooth C.Variable. D.Breakable.
34.Why is an igloo recommended to Elsa?
A.Its round shape prevents heat loss.
B.It shows similarity to the crystal shape.
C.It offers convenience with many directions.
D.Its multi-crystal structure better spreads stress.
35.What is the possible benefit of building ice homes on Mars?
A.Providing shelter for humans. B.Reducing construction waste.
C.Allowing for quick settlement. D.Helping collect solar power.
Criticism is never fun. If it is helpful, then you can use it to become a more well-rounded person. If it’s only meant to harm you, then you can work on shaking it off like a bad habit. How do you deal with it? 36
Accept that you’re not perfect. This is a great way to deal with criticism. To be able to take a little bit of feedback, you can’t keep thinking that you can do no wrong. Nobody’s perfect, so if you think you’re perfect, then you’re nobody. Every person has disadvantages. 37
See if there’s some truth to it. If the feedback is coming from a person who has your best interest in mind, then you have to consider the possibility that there really is some truth to those words. 38 If ten people say that you are selfish, then they can’t all be wrong, can they? Take a moment to consider the possibility that this person is really on to something.
39 If you have received some criticism delivered in a friendly and helpful way, or just in a way meant to be honest and clear, just take the time to thank the person and to say that you appreciate the fact that the person told you something that can make you an even better friend, student, or professional.
Stop making excuses. If someone is giving you reasonable criticism, stop making excuses. If you get defensive and make excuses, then the person won’t be able to finish telling you exactly what he or she means, and you won’t get the information you need to really improve. It’s natural that we feel defensive and get the feeling that we can do no wrong. 40
A.Make yourself a better person.
B.Thank the person for being honest.
C.The following tips can be helpful to you.
D.Most people are able to deal with criticism properly.
E.It’s even more likely if you’ve heard similar comments before.
F.If you don’t see any of yours, you’re not analyzing yourself as closely as you should.
G.But it’s important to hear people out before you just cut them off to prove you’re perfect.

A Journey of Self-discovery
Since childhood, I had always been overshadowed by my elder sister, Lily, who was the epitome (缩影) of perfection in the eyes of our parents and everyone around us. She was an outstanding student, consistently topping her class in every subject. She was also a gifted pianist, her fingers dancing gracefully over the keys, creating the most beautiful melodies that could move people to tears. In contrast, I was just an ordinary kid. My grades were plain, and I had no particular talent that could make me stand out.
Our parents, especially my mother, always compared me to Lily. This constant comparison made me feel less confident and inadequate. So, I forced myself to study for long hours, even when I was exhausted. I also took piano lessons, but my clumsy fingers could never produce the same magic as Lily’s.
In high school, I joined the drama club, thinking that it might be a way to shine. I was so eager to prove myself that I took on every role that came my way, regardless of whether it suited me or not. I tried to parrot the acting styles of famous actors, but my performances always seemed forced and unnatural. The other club members started to give me strange looks, and I could sense their disappointment. I started to question myself: Why was I trying so hard to be someone I wasn’t?
One day, while helping out in the school library, I accidentally discovered a book on photography. As I flipped through the pages, I was fascinated with the charming images. That night, I started to imagine myself behind the camera, capturing the beauty of the world around me. The next day, I used my savings to buy a second-hand camera. I began to explore the school campus, taking pictures of the old buildings, the blooming flowers, and the smiling faces of my classmates. I found I could photograph in a way that made the ordinary look extraordinary.

29.What does Jann Spiess think of people’s debates about AI?
A.They miss AI’s possible use in hospitals. B.They fail to notice AI’s help in factories.
C.They care only about information managing. D.They focus on AI-human competitive relationship.
30.What can we learn from the examples in Paragraph 4?
A.AI helps workers do creative work. B.AI gives workers more tasks to do.
C.AI takes over doctors’ tasks in hospitals. D.AI reduces doctors’ stress in treating diseases.
31.What of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.AI Makes Jobs More Stressful B.AI Works Best Without Human Help
C.AI Takes Over Human Jobs Completely D.AI Teamwork Makes Humans More Creative
D

(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
With my camera in hand, I began to gain some confidence.

Plus, camping is available at the park for those who want to spend more time enjoying its natural beauty.

Head for this small region for kayaking, golfing, and breathtaking natural views. Watch some of the 175 species of birds that live along the ocean and salt marsh(沼泽), or other local animals such as alligators, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles. 21. 根据Morris Island部分中“Today, this island is only accessible by boat.”(现在,这个岛只能通过船只进入。)
根据Surfside Beach部分中“it identified itself as the first autism-friendly (自闭症友好) travel destination in the world in January 2016. Visitors can approach the sandy beach from 36 different entry points, some of which provide wheel chair access.”(2016年1月,它被誉为世界上第一个自闭症友好的旅游目的地。

根据文章第一段“Unlike most athletes, Eddie did not come to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games for a medal. He came simply to compete. In doing so, he realized his dream.(与大多数运动员不同的是,Eddie并没有为了奖牌而参加1988年卡尔加里冬季奥运会。他来只是为了比赛。这样,他实现了自己的梦想。)”可知,他的梦想就是参加奥运会。故选C。
25.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“At first, Eddie tried to make the British national ski team but failed. Then he chose the riskiest event, ski jumping. No British skier had ever competed in that sport, but having no competitors meant that Eddie had a better chance of qualifying (取得资格) for the 1988 Olympic Games.(起初,Eddie试图加入英国国家滑雪队,但失败了。然后他选择了风险最大的项目——跳台滑雪。没有英国滑雪运动员参加过这项运动,但是没有竞争对手意味着Eddie有更好的机会获得1988年奥运会的资格。)”可推断,Eddie选择这个项目是因为英国没有滑雪运动员参加这项运动,所以Eddie没有竞争对手,那么就更有机会获得参加奥运会的资格。故选D。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Eddie had no coach, equipment, or financial support, but what he had was determination. Coming in last place actually made him the star of the Olympics and the true embodiment (化身) of the Olympic spirit.( Eddie没有教练,没有设备,也没有资金支持,但他有决心。
根据划线单词下一句“but we can struggle to find the courage to put ourselves back out there, or the creativity to find another way.(但我们可以努力找到勇气让自己回到那里,或者找到另一种方式的创造力。)”
29.What does Jann Spiess think of people’s debates about AI?
A.They miss AI’s possible use in hospitals. B.They fail to notice AI’s help in factories.
C.They care only about information managing. D.They focus on AI-human competitive relationship.

31.What of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.AI Makes Jobs More Stressful B.AI Works Best Without Human Help
C.AI Takes Over Human Jobs Completely D.AI Teamwork Makes Humans More Creative
【答案】28.C 29.D 30.A 31.D
由第二段“The results showed that workers with AI’s help solved 14% more problems each hour. (结果显示,在人工智能的帮助下,工人每小时多解决了14%的问题。)”可知,我们能从Erik Brynjolfsson的研究中了解到人工智能帮助员工快速解决更多问题。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“They always ask, “Is AI better than humans?” instead of “How can AI and humans work together?” (他们总是问“人工智能比人类好吗?”而不是“人工智能和人类如何合作?”)”可知,Jann Spiess认为人们关于人工智能的争论聚焦于人工智能与人类的竞争关系,而不是合作关系,故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段“Real-world examples prove this works. (现实世界的例子证明了这一点。在医院,人工智能可以自动记录患者信息,让医生专注于发现疾病和患者护理。在现代工厂里,人工智能管理质量检查,帮助工人创造性地解决问题。这些例子表明,人工智能在保持人类优势的同时提高了效率。)”可知,我们可以从第4段的例子中了解到人工智能帮助员工进行创造性工作。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly changing how we live and work. Some people worry AI will take over jobs, but there is a better way to see the future. AI teamwork means using smart tools to help humans, not replace them. (人工智能(AI)正在迅速改变我们的生活和工作方式。有些人担心人工智能会取代我们的工作,但我们有更好的方式来看待未来。人工智能团队合作意味着使用智能工具来帮助人类,而不是取代人类。)”可知,文章主要讲人工智能与人类协作,能让人类更有创造力,所以D选项“AI Teamwork Makes Humans More Creative (人工智能团队合作让人类更有创造力)”。故选D。
D
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.D 35.A
根据第一段“How closely does Elsa’s icy touch approach reality? Elsa isn’t alone in building with ice. In our world, designers can make fantastic structures from ice, too. (艾莎的冰雪魔力与现实有多接近?并非只有艾莎能用冰建造东西。在我们的世界里,设计师也能用冰打造奇妙的建筑。)”可知,提及《冰雪奇缘 2》中艾莎的冰魔法,是为了自然过渡到现实世界中冰在建筑领域的应用,建立奇幻与现实的关联。故选B项。
33.词句猜测题。根据第二段““If you’re trying to construct a large building, it’d be very hard to get ice to hold a lot of weight,” explains Kenneth Libbrecht, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology.(加州理工学院的物理学家肯尼斯・利布雷希特解释道:“如果你想建造一座大型建筑,很难让冰承受住巨大的重量。”)”
根据第三段“Elsa probably should have a spare igloo. Her palace looks to be a single crystal (结晶体) and a crystal of ice is weaker in some directions than others. But in an igloo, each block has thousands of tiny ice crystals in it, each turned a different way. So, no one direction would be weak, as it likely would be in this palace.(艾尔莎或许该备一座备用冰屋。她的宫殿看似是一整块冰晶,而冰晶在某些方向上的强度会弱于其他方向。但冰屋的每一块冰砖里,都包含数千个微小冰晶,且每个冰晶的朝向各不相同。因此,冰屋不会像这座宫殿那样,存在某个脆弱的方向。)”可知,推荐冰屋是因为其多晶体结构能更好地分散压力,避免单一方向脆弱。故选D项。
35.细节理解题。根据第五段“These researchers are figuring out what it might take to build ice homes on Mars for human explorers. Ice walls might even help protect astronauts from harmful lights, improving safety and creating livable environments for long-term missions on Mars. (这些研究人员正在研究如何为人类探险家在火星上建造冰屋。冰墙甚至可能帮助保护宇航员免受有害光线的伤害,提高安全性,并为火星上的长期任务创造宜居环境。)”可知,在火星建造冰屋的潜在好处是为人类(宇航员)提供庇护所。故选A项。
36.根据前文“Criticism is never fun. If it is helpful, then you can use it to become a more well-rounded person. If it’s only meant to harm you, then you can work on shaking it off like a bad habit. How do you deal with it?(批评从来都不是令人愉快的事。如果批评是有益的,你可以用它来让自己成为一个更全面的人。如果它只是想伤害你,你可以努力像摆脱坏习惯一样摆脱它。你该如何应对呢?)”可知,空格处应引出下文的应对批评的技巧,C选项“The following tips can be helpful to you.(以下这些技巧可能对你有帮助。)”
37.根据前文“Accept that you’re not perfect. This is a great way to deal with criticism. To be able to take a little bit of feedback, you can’t keep thinking that you can do no wrong. Nobody’s perfect, so if you think you’re perfect, then you’re nobody. Every person has disadvantages.(接纳自己并不完美。这是应对批评的好方法。要能够接受一点反馈,你就不能一直认为自己不会犯错。没有人是完美的,所以如果你认为自己完美,那你就一无是处。每个人都有缺点。)”可知,空格处应强调要正视自己的缺点,F选项“If you don’t see any of yours, you’re not analyzing yourself as closely as you should.(如果你看不到自己的任何缺点,说明你没有尽可能仔细地剖析自己。)”
38.根据前文“See if there’s some truth to it. If the feedback is coming from a person who has your best interest in mind, then you have to consider the possibility that there really is some truth to those words.(看看批评中是否有真实成分。如果反馈来自一个真心为你着想的人,那么你就得考虑这些话可能确实有道理。)”和后文“If ten people say that you are selfish, then they can’t all be wrong, can they?(如果十个人都说你自私,那他们不可能都错了,不是吗?)”可知,空格处应说明多次听到类似批评时,真实性更大概率存在,E选项“It’s even more likely if you’ve heard similar comments before.(如果你以前听过类似的评价,那么这种可能性就更大了。)”中的“heard similar comments before”呼应后文“ten people say that you are selfish”,进一步补充判断批评真实性的依据,符合语境。故选E项。

If someone is giving you reasonable criticism, stop making excuses. If you get defensive and make excuses, then the person won’t be able to finish telling you exactly what he or she means, and you won’t get the information you need to really improve. It’s natural that we feel defensive and get the feeling that we can do no wrong.(停止找借口。如果有人给你合理的批评,停止找借口。如果你变得戒备并找借口,对方就无法说完他或她的真实想法,你也无法获得真正改进所需的信息。我们会感到戒备并觉得自己不会犯错,这是很自然的。)”可知,空格处应转折说明要先听对方把话说完,G选项“But it’s important to hear people out before you just cut them off to prove you’re perfect.(但在你打断对方来证明自己完美之前,听他们把话说完是很重要的。)”
