Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to talk about a useful hobby—growing vegetables at home. Even if you live in an apartment, you can start with small pots on a balcony. First, choose easy-to-grow plants like tomatoes or lettuce. They don’t need much space. Next, get some good-quality soil and plant the seeds according to the instructions. Water them regularly, but don’t overwater them—too much water can damage the roots. Sunlight is important too. Most vegetables need at least 6 hours of sunlight every day. If you don’t have a sunny spot, consider using an artificial light. Another tip: use natural fertilizers like coffee grounds to help the plants grow. Not only is it fun, but it also gives you fresh vegetables! My friend Sarah started last month, and now she has fresh lettuce every week. Why not give it a try?

Had she been a singer, she might have been an American star. But Clora Bryant played the trumpet, and reputation came slowly. Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her, died on August 25, 2019, in Los Angeles, when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill battle, said her son Darrin. “It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.”
Bryant played the trumpet with such passion and she became a mainstay in the growing jazz scene in the 1940s. Dizzy Gillespie once told Times jazz critic Leonard feather that Bryant was the most underrated (低估) trumpet player in L. A.
But by 1992, she was living on Social Security, staying at a son’s Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当铺). “A lot of clubs have closed.” she told the Times. “And how many female trumpet players do you see working?”
Bryant and her brothers were raised by their father, a patient man who encouraged his children to think big. She wanted to be in the high school marching band, but Charles Bryant warned his daughter she’d likely face resistance. “But anything you want to do, I’m behind you,” she recalled. It was her father who encouraged her to do whatever she wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger.
24.What does the underlined word “resolved” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Adventurous. B.Unique. C.Determined. D.Anxious.
25.Why is “Social Security” mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To prove Bryant’s struggle through life. B.To show Bryant’s relation with her son.
C.To explain how Bryant made a living. D.To stress the importance of the pawnshop.
26.What may be the key reason for Bryant’s being underrated?
A.The terrible financial situation. B.The poor family background.
C.The discouragement from family. D.The open sexism from society.
27.What played an important role for Bryant to stick to her dream?
A.Her son’s support. B.Her brothers’ company.
C.Her father’s encouragement. D.Her strict family education.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.D 27.C
根据第一段中“Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her (Bryant虽然一辈子都被公然的性别歧视所困扰,但她突破屏障,下定决心要成为一名备受尊敬的爵士小号手)”可知,Bryant虽然她一辈子都被公然的性别歧视所困扰,但她决心成为一名受尊敬的爵士小号手。结合划线词前“It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire (这是一个男人的世界,这让她很难过。但这只会点燃她的热情)”可知,性别歧视并未能阻挡Bryant成为一名爵士小号手,反而使她更加下定决心成为一名爵士小号手,所以可以推断出画线单词“resolved”意思是“下定决心的”,与“determined”意思一致。故选C项。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But by 1992, she was living on Social Security, staying at a son’s Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当铺). (到了1992年,她却只能靠社会保险金生活,住在儿子位于加州长滩的公寓,两把小号都被送进了典当铺。)”可推知,作者提及“社会保险金”是为了证实她当时经济状况的窘迫,从侧面反应她成名过程中的奋斗与艰辛。故选A项。
根据第一段中的“Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her, died on August 25, 2019, in Los Angeles, when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill battle, said her son Darrin. “It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.
根据最后一段中的“It was her father who encouraged her to do whatever she wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger. (正是她的父亲鼓励她去做任何她想做的事情,这使她变得越来越强大。)”可知,父亲的鼓励是她坚持自己的梦想的关键,起到重要作用。故选C项。

When her students ask what she was like at their age, Tiffany Marconi opens up about her high school experience. Her family were often on the move, and she says that moving so often made her feel lost. “I was just kind of all over the place. My teachers in high school really helped me discover who I was and feel comfortable with myself,” Marconi says.
Among her co-workers, Marconi is admired for her rapport (融洽) with students. She’s a go-getter who believes “you get out what you put in.” So she is the obvious choice to teach a new course for juniors and seniors, school leaders say.
Marconi is responsible for building a program in Wheat on Warrenville Unit District 200. Through her “Intro to Teaching” classes, Marconi is drawing high school students to the profession (职业) at a time when a national teacher shortage makes headlines.
One of the goals of the program is to give teens real-world experiences and opportunities to explore careers while they’re in high school. The curriculum (课程) is set through the College of DuPage, but Marconi creates a student-centered classroom. At the end of the term, students design their own classroom on an individual level and in small groups as a team-based challenge.
Marconi doesn’t avoid talking about the realities — all the positives and some of the struggles of being a teacher. “Yes, I would love all of them to come back and teach.” Marconi says. “But I just hope honestly that it helps them figure out if they want to be a teacher, and if not, that’s OK. The one thing I always tell my students: You need to find a job, something that you love and that you are excited to do when waking up every day.”

A recent earthquake happened in California. Fortunately, no damage was reported. However, the earthquake was important in another aspect — many people in the area received warnings on their mobile phones just before the earthquake hit. Furthermore, several of these phones aided in detecting (检测) the earthquake in the first place.
Some smartphone companies have been developing a warning system that can remind users a few seconds before an earthquake hits. Although a few seconds may not seem like much, it can provide enough time to take cover under a table or desk, slow down trains, and prevent planes from taking off or landing. This system is expected to save lives during stronger quakes. It relies on information from two sources: a network of several seismometers (地震仪) placed across the states, and the world’s largest earthquake detection network created through smartphones owned by the public.
The mobile earthquake detecting and warning network uses built-in sensors (传感器) on mobile phones to replace traditional detection instruments. The system can work out whether an earthquake is happening and where. It can then send a warning to phones in the area where the earthquakes are likely to hit.
Radio signals travel faster than earthquake waves, allowing warnings to be sent before the shaking. This technology opens up the possibility of detecting the earthquakes in regions where widespread networks of costly seismometers cannot be used, and could provide earthquake warnings in even poorer places of the world.
The earthquake warning system has some limitations (限制), particularly in regions with low phone usage and in earthquakes that happen near the ocean, which can cause tsunamis (海啸). Additionally, while the system can provide a few seconds of advance warning, detecting earthquakes remains challenging. Still, there are hopes to expand the system’s usage worldwide in the future as long as we want to make a change in its limitations.
32.Why was the warning system invented?
A.To reduce the economic loss of earthquakes. B.To buy more survival time for people.
C.To raise people’s self-protection awareness. D.To figure out earthquakes’ location.
33.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.Where the system is used. B.How the system works.
C.When the system will operate. D.What the system aims for.
34.What is special about the system?
A.It can be used in wider areas. B.It gives warnings days in advance.
C.It uses the Internet to send signals. D.It shares information recorded by users.
35.What will the scientists do to the system next?
A.Add the latest data to it. B.Shorten its warning time.
C.Keep working on its problems. D.Put it into computers instead of phones.

56.addicted 57.to quit 58.a 59.on 60.shot 61.appreciating 62.relationships 63.what 64.closer 65.but
根据空前的“was so”和空后的“to”可知,此处考查固定短语be addicted to,意为“对……上瘾”,所以空处应用形容词addicted作表语。故填addicted。
57.考查非谓语动词。句意:对我来说,戒掉这个习惯是非常困难的。根据空前的“It was very hard for me”可知,此处考查固定句型“It is + adj. + for sb. to do sth.”,意为“对某人来说做某事是……的”,其中it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的动词不定式,所以空处应用动词不定式to quit作真正的主语。故填to quit。
故填a。
故填on。

故填what。
故填but。

My Life Camping Experience
Last year in October, my family and I took our first trip to the Lake Houston Wilderness Park and slept underneath the stars. As we walked through the beautiful park, the colors of the sun shined brightly on the pile of leaves. The gentle wind of the forest welcomed us with the sound of crackling (噼啪) of dried leaves. My family was altogether, which was the most important part of the trip for me.
My brothers and sisters are adults with different lives, which makes it difficult for us to plan an activity, like this one, where we can be altogether at the same time and place.
We had finished setting up the tent when it suddenly started raining. Luckily, we had positioned the tent on a high flat surface where water could not come into our tent. Even with the rain, I had never been happier. The quiet forest and big trees surrounded the tent.
While we all enjoyed the sound of the rain dripping on our tent, mom prepared some snacks and drinks for us while we played games and chatted about our daily life stories. We made wet-weather camping fun. I noticed how unique it was camping under the sound of the rain; we were gathered around in the middle of nature and it was a nice feeling, though it was a little bit cool.

As darkness fell, Mom cooked a warm meal over the fire for the family. The smell of delicious food filled the air, making our mouths water. By the dancing light of the campfire, we sat around, sharing stories and laughter. Each bite of the meal was filled with warmth and love. After dinner, we all leaned back, looking up at the starry sky through the thin gaps in the leaves. The stars twinkled brightly, as if they were joining our happy gathering. It was a peaceful and wonderful moment that I would always cherish.
We spent the rest of the evening exploring the rocky trails around our campsite. With flashlights in hand, we carefully made our way along the path. The sound of our footsteps echoed in the quiet forest. Along the way, we discovered interesting rocks and small insects. My siblings and I would stop from time to time, pointing out something amazing we saw. Even the youngest among us was full of curiosity. When we finally returned to the campsite, we were tired but excited. Lying in the tent, listening to the soft sounds of the forest, we slowly drifted off to sleep, looking forward to another wonderful day in this beautiful wilderness.

Dear David,
I’m glad to hear that you’re planning a trip to China this summer vacation. I strongly recommend visiting Chengde in Hebei Province.
Chengde is a beautiful city with rich historical and cultural heritage. Situated in the upper reaches of the Luanhe River, it’s known for its natural scenery. It’s home to the Chengde Mountain Resort, a large imperial garden with lakes, hills, and ancient pavilions. The Puning Temple is also a must-see, resembling the Potala Palace in Tibet. In terms of local cuisine, the roasted lamb legs and local tea are popular.
When visiting Chengde, you’d better take precautions against sun exposure. Additionally, explore the city’s diverse cultures by interacting with locals. Wish you a good time.
Yours,
Li Hua

Had she been a singer, she might have been an American star. But Clora Bryant played the trumpet, and reputation came slowly.
28.What was Tiffany Marconi’s experience in high school?
A.She was very settled and didn’t experience any challenges.
B.She felt lost because her family moved frequently.
C.She was a top student and had a clear future plan.
D.She was a teacher who helped other students.
29.What is the purpose of the “Intro to Teaching” classes?
A.To teach students how to build programs.
B.To help students avoid the national teacher shortage.
C.To provide students with a traditional high school experience.
D.To prepare students for a career in teaching during high school.
30.How does Marconi set the curriculum for her classes?
A.She follows the curriculum set by the College of DuPage strictly.
B.She focuses on individual learning rather than group work.
C.She designs her own curriculum without any guidance.
D.She creates a student-centered classroom.
31.What is one of Marconi’s main messages to her students about their future careers?
A.They must become teachers.
B.They should avoid teaching due to its struggles.
C.They should find a job that they are excited to do.
D.They should only consider teaching if they love it.
D

Had she been a singer, she might have been an American star. But Clora Bryant played the trumpet, and reputation came slowly.
D
