When Susan Greenstein Prescott was a high school senior, her English teacher, Fred DiMeo, gave her a terrible task: Recite (背诵) a poem in front of the whole class. “I had a mild stutter (口吃). I’d be trying to get a word out that might begin with ‘D’ or a ‘TH’ and the word wouldn’t come out, or I might say ‘the’ three times,” Greenstein Prescott said.
The thought of getting up in front of her classmates and stuttering through the poem was too much to bear. Greenstein Prescott went home and told how frightened she was to her mom, who agreed to write a note asking for her to be excused from doing the task in front of the whole class.
When the day of the recitation came, Greenstein Prescott recited the poem one-on-one to DiMeo. Once she was done, he said something she’d never heard before: that he liked listening to her voice. For the first time, she considered the possibility that public speaking didn’t have to be a source of fright. “I think in his mind it was so minor and he wanted me to understand I have nothing to be afraid of,” she said.
Greenstein Prescott went on to graduate from high school and go to college. She never got to properly thank DiMeo. But sometime after college, she landed a job as a corporate trainer The new position made her realize how big an influence he had had on her confidence. “I stand up in front of people and I speak. And I do it all the time, and if I do stutter once in a while, big whoop,” she said.
Greenstein Prescott recently found a way to contact her former teacher, and plans on sending him a letter expressing her thanks.
“He truly is an unsung hero because he played a big role in my very successful career and my life,” she said. “I don’t know where I would’ve gone if I felt like I had to keep my voice quiet because I was afraid of embarrassing myself. I’d like to give him my thanks-for that kindness.”
4. How does Greenstein Prescott find reciting a poem in public?
A. Acceptable. B. Encouraging. C. Understandable. D. Challenging.
5. What can be inferred about Fred DiMeo from Paragraph 3?
A. He is a responsible English teacher. B. He is good at inspiring his students.
C. He likes Greenstein Prescott’s voice. D. He treats students as his own children.
6. Why does Greenstein Prescott mention her job as a corporate trainer?
A. To thank for her teacher’s influence on her. B. To present she is a great college graduate.
C. To share her experience of landing a job. D. To show opportunities favor prepared mind.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Recitation Task B. A Terrible Lesson
C. My Unsung Hero D. My Life Experience

For decades, scholars debated whether Indo-European languages — including English, Russian, Greek and more — spread from the Eurasian steppe or from early farmers in Anatolia, in what is now Türkiye. A new study presents strong genetic evidence linking Indo-European origins to the steppe.
The researchers found that around 6,000 years ago, the Caucasus-Lower Volga (CLV) people began migrating in two directions: One group moved west into what is now Ukraine and mixed with local hunter-gatherers, eventually forming the Yamnaya genome. Another group moved south into Anatolia, likely bringing an early form of Indo-European with them.
“We know that people such as Hittites spoke Anatolian, but these people didn’t have Yamnaya ancestry,” David Reich, a geneticist at Harvard and a senior author of the studies, said. “We hypothesized (假设) some deeper population was the ultimate source of Indo-European languages.”
But not all experts are convinced that genetic data alone can pinpoint the origins of a language.
“Language is transmitted socially, not biologically — there isn’t necessarily a direct link between language and ancestry,” Guus Kroonen, a linguist at Leiden University, tells Andrew Curry from Science.
Still, many researchers believe the findings provide the strongest evidence yet for a steppe origin.
This study marks a major step forward in understanding how Indo-European languages spread across the world, and helps dismantle 19th-and 20th-century racial theories that falsely claimed Indo-European speakers belonged to a pure “Aryan” race.
Instead, the study paints a very different picture: Indo-European speakers came from a region where multiple populations mixed and migrated over time. As linguists and geneticists continue to untangle the origins of Indo-European languages, one thing is clear — the story of language is one of movement, change and cultural exchange, far from the rigid, nationalist narratives of the past.
8. How was the Yamnaya genome generated?
A. CLV people displaced Anatolian farmers. B. Hunter-gatherers migrated to Anatolia.
C. CLV people mixed with local groups. D. Hunter-gatherers adopted Indo-European.
9. Why did the author mention Guus’s words?
A. To stress the study is also questioned. B. To make the study more convincing.
C. To show findings of other studies. D. To challenge findings of previous studies.
10. What does the underlined word “dismantle” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A. Relieve. B. Indicate. C. Disagree. D. Recognize
11. What does the last paragraph suggest?
A. The study is related to immigration. B. Language evolves through communication.
C. Languages can’t develop in remote places. D. Cultural exchange is based on language.
D
Hit the gym, even if it’s for just two days. Limiting workouts to weekends does not mean you will be missing out on the cognitive (认知的) benefits. New research reveals that “weekend warriors” enjoy cognitive benefits comparable to regular gym goers. The term “weekend warrior” describes a pattern of physical activity limited to just one or two tough training periods per week.
Recent findings published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggest that weekend warrior workouts can reduce the risk of mild dementia (尖智症), with similar results to regular exercise.
Researchers based their findings on two surveys of more than 10,000 adults from the Mexico City Prospective Study. The study subjects had an average age of 51. The questionnaires examined whether subjects exercised or played sports, as well as the frequency: how many days per week and for how many minutes. Based on their responses, subjects were divided into groups: those who did not exercise, “weekend warriors”, those regularly active three or more times per week, and a combined group of weekend warriors and regular exercisers.
During the second survey, subjects’ cognitive drop was also assessed using the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), with a total score of 30. When mild cognitive impairment (损伤) (MCI) was set as an MMSE score of 23 or below, 2,856 cases were found. “Compared with the non-exercisers, weekend warriors were 13% less likely to develop MCI, while the regularly active and those in the combined group were 12% less likely to do so. The results were similar for both men and women,” a researcher stated.
This means that 13% of mild dementia cases might be avoided if all middle-aged adults exercised at least once or twice a week. The researchers suggest their findings are important for public health because the weekend warrior physical activity pattern may be a more convenient option for busy people.
12. How are subjects mainly grouped in the study?
A. By age. B. By health condition.
C. By sport type. D. By exercise frequency.
13. What aspect of the research is mainly talked about in Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Its research equipment. B. Its background and theories.
C. The process and the results. D. Specific research patterns.
14. What can we learn from the number “13%” mentioned in the survey?
A. Men experience more memory loss. B. MCI is common among non-exercisers.
C. Weekend exercising also works. D. Dementia is unavoidable with aging.
15. Which statement can be used to describe the research findings?
A. The early bird catches the worm.
B. Quantity matters more than quality in exercise.
C. The more you exercise, the healthier you will be.
D. Hitting the gym is beneficial, whenever you do it.

Teenagers seem to get stuck in a bad mood really easily. Sometimes the bad mood feels like a quicksand, and the harder you try to climb out, the more stuck you get! That was true for me as a teenage boy. Luckily, I had a good friend, Ollie, who helped me find a way out of my fussy (难以取悦的) feelings — doing sports to shift attention away from negative emotions.
One Saturday afternoon when I was 15, I was reading a book and had just come to the most thrilling part of the mystery when my little brother and sister rushed into my room.
“We made paper airplanes!” Indi shouted. “Aren’t they cool?” asked Tex, sending his plane directly into my head.
“Excuse me. I would appreciate a little peace and quiet so I can read,” I said.
“Ooh! I want to read!” said Tex.
Indi climbed onto my bed. “Can you read your book out loud?”
“I don’t want to read out loud,” I huffed
“Are you in a bad mood?” Tex asked anxiously.
Without saying a word, I got up, dragged myself down the hall, and flopped into the living-room chair.
“What’s up, little man?” asked my dad.
“Please leave me alone. I’m in a terrible mood!” I yelled.
Hearing the noise outside, Mum came out from the kitchen, “Honey, we are just worried about you.”
I knew they were trying to help, but every time they showed care, I felt even worse! Seized by embarrassment and bad moods, I slammed the door and rushed out.
Standing under the tree where I often met Ollie, I felt like crying. Just then, Ollie stopped by and held a brand-new football in his hands. Immediately, Ollie sensed my distress.
“Hey, what’s up, buddy?” he asked.
I hesitated for a moment, torn between the desire to be alone and the urge to pour out my heart.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为120字左右;
Seeing the concern in Ollie’s eyes, I decided to share my feeling.

D 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据文章第一段中“I had a mild stutter(我有轻微的口吃)”和第二段第一句“The thought of getting up in front of her classmates and stuttering through the poem was too much to bear.(一想到要站在同学面前结结巴巴地念完这首诗,她就难以忍受)”可知,Greenstein Prescott有轻微口吃的毛病,她对于站在班上同学面前背诵诗词的想法难以忍受,因此这一背诵任务对她而言是一大挑战。
根据第三段内容“Once she was done, he said something she’d never heard before: that he liked listening to her voice. For the first time, she considered the possibility that public speaking didn’t have to be a source of fright. ‘I think in his mind it was so minor and he wanted me to understand I have nothing to be afraid of,’ she said.(她说完后,他说了一些她以前从未听过的话:他喜欢听她的声音。
根据文章第四段“Greenstein Prescott went on to graduate from high school and go to college. She never got to properly thank DiMeo. But sometime after college, she landed a job as a corporate trainer (企业培训师). The new position made her realize how big an influence he had had on her confidence.(Greenstein Prescott高中毕业后上了大学。她从没好好感谢过DiMeo。但大学毕业后不久,她找到了一份企业培训师的工作。新的职位使她意识到他对她的信心有多大的影响)”可知,Greenstein Prescott在高中毕业至大学期间,都没有恰当的机会好好感谢她的老师,直至她大学毕业找到了企业培训师的工作,这一新职位让她意识到高中时期DiMeo老师对她信心建立的深刻影响。故选A。
根据最后一段学生对老师的评价“He truly is an unsung hero because he played a big role in my very successful career and my life(他真的是一位无名英雄,因为他在我非常成功的事业和生活中发挥了重要作用)”可知,Greenstein Prescott想通过她的成长经历来表达她对一位无名老师的感激之情。故选C。

C 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中的“The researchers found that around 6,000 years ago, the Caucasus-Lower Volga (CLV) people began migrating in two directions: One group moved west into what is now Ukraine and mixed with local hunter gatherers, eventually forming the Yamnaya genome.(研究人员发现,大约六千年前,高加索-下伏尔加人群向两个方向迁徙:一支向西进入如今的乌克兰,与当地狩猎采集者融合,最终形成亚姆纳亚基因组。)”
根据第四段中的“But not all experts are convinced that genetic data alone can pinpoint the origins of a language.(但并非所有专家都相信仅凭基因数据就能精准确定一门语言的起源。)”以及第五段中的“Language is transmitted socially, not biologically — there isn’t necessarily a direct link between language and ancestry.(语言是通过社会方式传播,而非生物方式,语言和血统之间未必存在直接联系。)”
根据第七段中的“This study marks a major step forward in understanding how Indo-European languages spread across the world, and helps dismantle 19th-and 20th-century racial theories that falsely claimed Indo-European speakers belonged to a pure “Aryan” race.(这项研究在理解印欧语言全球传播方面迈出重要一步,有助于dismantle十九、二十世纪错误宣称印欧语使用者属于纯粹雅利安种族的种族理论。)”
根据第八段中的“As linguists and geneticists continue to untangle the origins of Indo-European languages, one thing is clear — the story of language is one of movement, change and cultural exchange, far from the rigid, nationalist narratives of the past.(随着语言学家和遗传学家继续梳理印欧语言起源,有一点很明确:语言的发展伴随着迁徙、变化与文化交流,和过去僵化的民族主义叙述截然不同。)”

D 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据文章大意以及最后一段“This means that 13% of mild dementia cases might be avoided if all middle-aged adults exercised at least once or twice a week. The researchers suggest their findings are important for public health because the weekend warrior physical activity pattern may be a more convenient option for busy people.( 这意味着,如果所有中年人都每周至少进行一到两次锻炼,可能避免13%的轻度痴呆病例。

故填an。

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为120字左右;
Seeing the concern in Ollie’s eyes, I decided to share my feeling.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing the concern in Ollie’s eyes, I decided to share my feeling. I told him how annoyed I was by my brother and sister and how upset I felt when my parents tried to comfort me. After listening patiently, Ollie patted me on the shoulder and suggested we kick the football for a while. Without waiting for my reply, he tossed the ball to me. At first, I kicked it weakly, still lost in my bad mood. But soon I focused on running and passing. Sweat rolled down my face as we chased the ball around. Gradually, my anger melted away. When we stopped to rest, I realized sports really took my mind off those negative feelings. I thanked Ollie, glad that I hadn’t stayed trapped in my bad mood.
