Gap Year Volunteer Abroad Programme
Ready to break free from the ordinary and start an exciting journey of change? Your gap year is your chance to discover what you’re truly capable of, and Projects Abroad is here to help you make it unforgettable.
You’ll gain real-world experience and support communities in need at the same time. It’s an exciting and different way to start the next chapter of your life after high school. If you are looking to do something this autumn or winter, we recommend our Gap Projects:
Gap Project 1: Peru & the Galapagos(8 weeks)
Gap Project 2: Kenya & Tanzania (6 weeks)
Gap Project 3: Nepal & Cambodia(10 weeks)
On a gap year programme abroad after high school, the experience can be designed to benefit your exact interests and goals. You can explore a career you’re interested in, like medicine or law, and add relevant work experience to your resume (简历). We have options for students who’ve put off their university acceptance, and for those who don’t feel they’re ready for further education just yet.
There’s a lot you can get involved in by volunteering abroad on your gap year. You can protect endangered ecosystems and wild animals on a Conservation Project. Or, give children the educational support they desperately need on a Childcare Project. If you’re eager to be more independent, we recommend joining Flexi Trips to personalize your gap year programme.
All of our programmes focus on providing long-term, sustainable solutions. We don’t believe in quick fixes. So no matter how short or long your gap year abroad is, you’ll be part of ongoing efforts to make a real difference.

In 1969, I was five years old in Lynchburg, Virginia, a skinny black kid of somewhat poor village. At that time, what my villagers were watching was “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind — Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were walking on the Moon.” I always joined them with great interest.
My father was a farmer who worked from dawn until dark, struggling to feed my family. But he always took pains to do all the things to make money for his children to experience different adventures and encourage us to run after our own dreams. After Neil Armstrong’s moon landing, all the kids in the neighborhood thought I would be an astronaut one day. But I didn’t see an astronaut like me, because family background did matter.
I went on with this dream through a high school, and even a college. After graduation, I went to work for NASA. A friend of mine handed me an application and believed that I would be a great astronaut. Although I was lucky enough to be chosen, I didn’t know what it meant to be a real astronaut. In 2007, I was in Space Shuttle “Atlantis,” careening off the planet, traveling at 17,500 miles per hour, and eight and a half minutes later, the main engines cut off, and we were floating in space.
My job on this mission was to install(安装) a laboratory for materials and human research, which the European team have been waiting for 10 year. I grabbed out the big module, using the robotic arm and attaching it to the space station. So, this moment happened. It was done and I had a big sigh of relief.
In the space station, I could communicate with different people from all around the world. We had these people living and working together. Whether Russian or French, all these different people coexisted in harmony as one family. And so, when I looked up to space, I thought we all had to hold onto something until we finally came to the fantastic space.
4 Why did the author think it impossible to be an astronaut at first?
A. He was a farmer. B. His family was poor.
C. He was too young. D. His father was too tired.
5. What does the underlined phrase “careening off’ probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Thinking back to. B. Looking out of.
C. Taking pictures of. D. Flying away from.
6. What can the author’s job be described as according to paragraph 4?
A. Demanding and challenging. B. Rewarding and boring.
C. Satisfying and motivating. D. Promising and amazing.
7 What message does the author want to express?
A. Everyone is likely to become an astronaut.
B. Parents are the best examples of their children.
C. Different people can coexist in harmony as one family.
D. Everyone should hold onto his dream, whether rich or poor.
Anyone who uses the ChatGPT website can ask the chatbot questions on any topic and get a speedy, detailed response in paragraph form. The website lists ChatGPT’s positive features as its ability to “remember what users said earlier in conversation” and allow users to provide follow-up corrections”, and how it’s trained to “decline inappropriate requests”.
The company OpenAI is honest about some of the technology’s flaws. According to its website, the chatbot occasionally “generates incorrect information” and “produces harmful instructions or prejudiced content”. It lists a third question: having “limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021”.
The New York City Department of Education banned the use of ChatGPT this month on devices and networks owned by schools across the state. The department mentioned concerns from local school teachers about student success. Oakland Unified School District in California and Seattle Public Schools have moved against ChatGPT, because it creates human-like responses that can be difficult to detect. Other large school systems including Miami-Dade County and Houston haven’t banned ChatGPT so far. Universities including Princeton are refusing to ban the chatbot; instead, they are advising professors to set their own rules.
Blocking a particular platform may be far less effective than schools think. “If students are not using it in their classes, they can use it at home or on their personal devices,” said Adam Phyall, an education technology expert. “Are we going to have a conversation about how we are going to unblock it? Or is it going to be: If we’re scared, let’s give it up and move onto the next thing? Instead, schools could use ChatGPT to teach kids how to improve their writing, for instance,” he said.
An OpenAI spokesperson said the company wants to help schools with their concerns and that users should reasonably use their AI-generated text. The company is hoping to work on a system for teachers to check whether students have used ChatGPT to cheat.
8. What does the underlined word “flaws” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Functions. B. Faults. C. Principles. D. Applications.
9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Wide use of ChatGPT in schools. B. Mixed reactions to ChatGPT.
C. Barriers to ChatGPT’s promotion. D. Concerns arising from ChatGPT.
10. What is Adam Phyall’s attitude to banning ChatGPT in schools?
A. Favourable. B. Unclear. C. Disapproving. D. Cautious.
11. What is OpenAI likely to do next according to the passage?
A. Train more teachers to use ChatGPT. B. Introduce ChatGPT to more schools.
C. Set limitations on the use of ChatGPT. D. Help educators identify ChatGPT texts.
At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up.
Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable.
In an effort to challenge this misconception, researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily distinguishable colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to differentiate. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning.
The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade over time.
This pushes us to reconsider the underlying culture that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a shift would not only reduce the pressures associated with the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a profound impact on personal development and the future of education.
12. What phenomenon does the “Stanford Duck Syndrome” probably describe?
A. Prioritizing effort over well-being.
B. Relieving stress through social activities.
C. Displaying graceful images to attract others.
D. Hiding hard work to appear naturally gifted.
13. How does the experiment in paragraph 3 challenge the misconception?
A. By showing effort fuels the brain activity.
B. By proving focus enhances brain function.
C. By linking color recognition to intelligence.
D. By associating careful observation with talent.
14. What is the author’s main concern about “Stanford Duck Syndrome”?
A. It values the learning process over outcomes.
B. It causes stress and false ideas about success.
C. It prevents students from recognizing their talents.
D. It makes students prioritize socializing over studying.
15. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. Fortune favors those with a clear vision.
B. Sweat is the ink that writes a masterpiece.
C. Work in silence and let success make the noise.
D. Keep moving forward even when no one sees it.

One pleasant New-year morning Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress (贫困).

4. Why did the author think it impossible to be an astronaut at first?
A. He was a farmer. B. His family was poor.

5. What does the underlined phrase “careening off’ probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Thinking back to. B. Looking out of.
C. Taking pictures of. D. Flying away from.
6. What can the author’s job be described as according to paragraph 4?
A. Demanding and challenging. B. Rewarding and boring.
C. Satisfying and motivating. D. Promising and amazing.
7. What message does the author want to express?
A. Everyone is likely to become an astronaut.
B. Parents are the best examples of their children.
C. Different people can coexist in harmony as one family.
D. Everyone should hold onto his dream, whether rich or poor.
B 5. D 6. A 7. D

推理判断题,根据文章第二段的“My father was a farmer who worked from dawn until dark, struggling to feed my family.
猜测词义题,根据文章第三段划线词所在句“In 2007, I was in Space Shuttle “Atlantis,” careening off the planet, traveling at 17,500 miles per hour, and eight and a half minutes later, the main engines cut off, and we were floating in space. (2007年,我乘坐“亚特兰蒂斯”号航天飞机,以每小时17500英里的速度careening off地球,八分半钟后,主发动机关闭,我们漂浮在太空中。)”可推断,“亚特兰蒂斯”号航天飞机飞离地球后八分半钟,主发动机关闭,作者一行漂浮在太空中,因此careening off的意思是“飞离”。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题,根据文章第四段“My job on this mission was to install(安装) a laboratory for materials and human research, which the European team have been waiting for 10 year. I grabbed out the big module, using the robotic arm and attaching it to the space station. So, this moment happened. It was done and I had a big sigh of relief.(我在这次任务中的工作是安装一个用于材料和人类研究的实验室,欧洲团队已经等待了10年,我用机械臂取出大模块,并将其连接到空间站。于是,这一刻发生了,完成后,我大大松了一口气。)”可推断,作者的工作要求高,具有挑战性。故选A。
推理判断题,根据文章最后一段“And so, when I looked up to space, I thought we all had to hold onto something until we finally came to the fantastic space. (因此,当我仰望大空时,我认为我们都必须抓住一些东西,直到我们最终来到这个奇妙的空间。)”以及全文内容可知,作者通过讲述自己追梦的经历,想表达的是每个人都应该坚持自己的梦想,无论是富人还是穷人。故选D。
B 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据第二段的“The company OpenAI is honest about some of...(OpenAI公司在……上是诚实的)”和“According to its website, the chatbot occasionally “generates incorrect information” and “produces harmful instructions or prejudiced content”. It lists a third question: having “limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021”. (根据其网站,聊天机器人偶尔会“产生不正确的信息”和“产生有害的指令或偏见的内容”。它列出了第三个问题:“对2021年后的世界和事件了解有限”。)”可知,此处是说聊天机器人还存在一些缺陷,所以,划线单词flaws的意义为“缺陷”,与faults意义相近。故选B。
【9题详解】
段落大意题。根据第三段的“The New York City Department of Education banned the use of ChatGPT this month on devices and networks owned by schools across the state. 故选A。
根据倒数第二段的““If students are not using it in their classes, they can use it at home or on their personal devices,” said Adam Phyall, “an education technology expert. Are we going to have a conversation about how we’re going to unblock it? Or is it going to be: If we’re scared, let’s give it up and move onto the next thing? Instead, schools could use ChatGPT to teach kids how to improve their writing, for instance,” he said. (教育技术专家Adam Phyall说:“如果学生在课堂上不使用它,他们可以在家里或个人设备上使用”。他说,“我们会就如何解锁它进行对话吗?或者如果我们害怕,让我们放弃它,转而做下一件事?相反,学校可以使用ChatGPT来教孩子们如何提高写作水平”。)”可知,Adam Phyall对禁止在学校使用ChatGPT持不赞成态度。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“An OpenAI spokesperson said the company wants to help schools with their concerns and that users should reasonably use their Al-generated text. The company is working on a system for teachers to check whether students have used ChatGPT to cheat. (OpenAI的一位发言人表示,该公司希望帮助学校解决他们的担忧,用户应该合理使用Al生成的文本。该公司正在开发一个系统,供教师检查学生是否使用ChatGPT作弊。)”可知,OpenAI下一步可能会帮助教育工作者识别ChatGPT文章。故选D。
D 13. A 14. B 15. B

由文章第一段“At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up. (在顶尖大学中,有一种被称为“斯坦福鸭子综合征”的现象。就像鸭子一样,学生们表面上看起来行动优雅。然而,在水面之下,他们正拼命划水以跟上节奏。)”和第二段中“Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success.
由文章第三段中“As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning. (随着任务难度的增加,大脑活动明显增加,特别是在与记忆和抽象推理相关的区域。)”和第四段中“The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. (这项研究表明,随着任务需要更多的努力,大脑更多的区域会变得活跃。)”可知,实验通过展示任务难度增加时,大脑活动特别是与记忆和抽象推理相关的区域活动明显增加,来挑战“天才轻松成功,努力者能力不足”的误解,证明了努力会激发大脑活动。故选A。
由文章第二段中“This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable. (这付出了高昂的代价:疲惫和焦虑普遍存在。此外,这还导致了一个常见的误解:真正的天才能够轻松取得成功,而那些努力的人则能力较差。)”可知,作者对“斯坦福鸭子综合征”的主要担忧是它导致学生产生对成功的错误观念,即认为真正的天才能够轻松取得成功,而努力工作的人则能力较差。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章倒数第二段中“Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade over time. (成长不仅仅来自天赋,还来自持续的努力。我们的大脑就像肌肉一样。如果不努力,即使我们天生的才能也会随着时间的推移而消退。)”和“By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry.

“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. The man was so moved that he stood there, failing to say any words. A bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled back at the father, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly. When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” he said. “I gave my money to a poor family, who seemed to be badly in need of help. I think I can wait for my books until next New Year.”
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.” Edward can’t believe it! “I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift. Always be ready to help people around you!” his father added. Holding the books, Edward felt they were the best gift in the world.
