I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “success.” I realized his tears were out of happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his General Equivalency Diploma (GED,普通同等学历证书), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍(, Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking different jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally found a job with some promise: a printing company. Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, and was kind of excited about giving school another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor, who has more than ten years of experience, learning, practicing and correcting mistakes, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain.” In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his home wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words.” This might sound like a perfect ending. When Cristina Zimmerman came back to work after having her baby, she struggled with depression. She almost intended to quit her job. But her school’s childcare, just a few rooms away, made all the difference. “I can be a teacher and a mom at the same time, said Zimmerman, a fourth-grade teacher in Idaho. “Teaching is my dream, but I also want to be with my child. I didn’t want to choose.”
In states such as Idaho and Texas, many schools now provide affordable quality child care for teachers. This helps teachers stay in their jobs, especially women who often leave work to care for their children. It also helps schools keep more good teachers and gives young children a safe place to grow.
In Idaho, Principal Heather Yarbrough started an on-campus childcare at her school after remembering how hard it was to drop off her three-month-old daughter Grace with a caregiver at a faraway childcare center each day. Yarbrough said the feelings still haunted her, even 14 years later. She recalled that she cried every day for weeks, but couldn’t quit her job as a teacher. Today, many teachers at her school use the on-campus childcare, and it helps them stay in their jobs.
“This is a great strategy by which you can support both children, families and then the school’s workforce and parties concerned welcome the idea,” said Molly Hillier, an instructional coach and mother of a child at the school.
In Texas, the Richardson school district runs two daycares that care for babies as young as six weeks old. Teachers only pay $350 per month, which is much less than regular daycares.
School-based child care not only helps teachers—it helps students, too. Happier teachers stay longer and build better relationships with kids. As one teacher said, “If teachers feel supported, they can give more to their students.”
29. Why did Zimmerman want to quit her teaching job?
A. She failed to get a pay raise.
B. She had to take care of her baby.
C. She disliked teaching students.
D. She lived far away from her school.
30. What did Hillier say about the on-campus childcare?
A. It mainly aims to benefit pupils.
B. It enables her to work from home.
C. It is a well-received program.
D. It is expensive for most families.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Teachers’ Struggles in Balancing Work and Family

Suppose you are a renter and want to change the color of your rental room’s walls, but you don’t want to paint them back to their original color before you move out. That’s where a new type of paint comes in, which can simply be removed from a wall and make things easier for renters.
This new type of paint, called Unpaint, was created by the Colombian company Glasst Innovation by mistake. Originally, the company’s research team was in search of a material to replace single-use plastics in the building industry. They wanted it to be made from renewable sources to reduce the environmental footprint of building materials. After years of hard work, they found something else: a liquid plant-based polymer (聚合物) with some truly unique physical qualities. They called it Glasstommer. “Our journey toward finding the right natural and renewable sources included lots of research, teaming up with agricultural teams,” Botero, a researcher of the company, said, “Good luck also played a role.”
According to Botero, Unpaint can be applied like regular paint, using brushes and rollers. However, instead of absorbing into the corners of walls like regular paint, Unpaint dries into a film that only stays on the surface that it is being applied to. This means that when the time has come, the paint can easily be removed from the wall and then thrown away.
Currently, Unpaint comes in 5,000 colors, and could be a boon for renters who want to change the color of their living space, but do not want to have to paint when they leave the house. Beyond home walls, Unpaint opens up possibilities for seasonal decorations. For those who love to change their decorations for holidays, they can use Unpaint to turn their kids’ room into a seasonal wonderland. Walls, furniture, and even windows can be painted for the season and effortlessly returned to their original state.
32. How was Unpaint created?
A. By working with international scientists.
B. By studying traditional painting methods.
C. By researching renewable building materials.
D. By improving existing plant-based polymers.
33. What makes Unpaint different from regular paint?
A. It absorbs into corners easily. B. It dries into a removable film.
C. It needs special tools to apply. D. It features fewer color choices.
34. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Problem. B. Deal. C. Topic. D. Benefit.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Unpaint, a great accidental creation
B. Glasstommer, a magic reusable paint
C. Glasst Innovation, a special company
D. Botero, an inventor changing our life

Keep eye contact with the crowd. ____40____ Pick one person in each part and look at him while you’re speaking. After each important point in your speech, switch your focus to another part. When you focus only on one person at a time, the size of the crowd isn’t as frightening.

Nowadays, whenever a customer wants to order food, it’s at their fingertips with take-out apps like Meituan and Eleme. All a hungry person has to do is to open the app, scroll through an endless number of restaurant choices, and have the food delivered to their door. That convenience(便捷) and variety(多样性) has made such apps hugely welcome in China, Japan, North American countries and European countries, and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many users say food delivery apps make their life much easier while others think they’re bad for local businesses. What do you think? Should take-out apps be banned(禁止)?
Yes—the convenience isn’t worth it
Many restaurants complain that take-out apps are more trouble than they’re worth. Some apps take a huge bite of the money from each sale—as much as 25%. Restaurants must either increase their prices or make less money, in an industry where profits(利润) are already slim. Also, they can’t always keep up with the increasing number of orders they receive. That makes customers unsatisfied with their service and products. Meanwhile, delivery workers say they’re not paid enough for a difficult, dangerous job in which they have to speed through busy streets. And what’s more, food delivery causes very serious environmental problems. According to a report, only plastic waste of all deliveries in China came to 1,600,000 tons in 2020. Can you imagine what it’s like in the whole world?
No—they offer an important service
Food apps bring restaurants more customers. Many of them might not know about their business otherwise. More customers means more orders, so even if the apps charge a fee(收费), the restaurant still wins. During the past few years when people couldn’t go out to eat, the apps helped businesses stay afloat(维持下去) and created millions of restaurant and delivery jobs. Delivery people work hard, but they can choose when and where to work. And for busy people, the apps provide the convenience of getting all kinds of food after a long day at work or school, allowing for more time with family and friends.

But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. His next step is college. “Now that I’ve got my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.

A. He was worried about his future. B. He had reached one of his goals.
C. He failed to pass the GED exam. D. He was touched by a warm story.
27. How did the printing company respond on hearing of Kevin’s education?

School-based child care not only helps teachers—it helps students too.

More customers means more orders so even if the apps charge a fee(收费), the restaurant still wins.
