In the past, teachers made children sit still for hours. They made them memorize all sorts of things. In other words, the children had to go on repeating things until they knew them by heart. Today, many teachers wonder if it is possible to make children learn at all. They say you must let children learn and discover things by themselves. But for some children, school is a kind of prison. They are there only because their parents make them go. They get out of the classroom as soon as the teacher lets them leave. Many of them want to find jobs, but the law will not allow them to work until they reach a certain age. And so they have to stay in school often. They do not learn anything at all and hate every moment. A Nature Adventure Camp Get adventurous this summer! Even though I am only ten years old, I have lived in two countries and in two cultures. I have lived in both Mexico and the United States. I was born in the state of Michoacán. I was born in a small town called Quinceo. Life there was simple and peaceful. There was a small market where we would go on Sundays. There was a corral where we would go and watch rodeos. After school, my friends and I would go for a swim in a creek. My mom did not work; she stayed at home taking care of our family. Life in Quinceo was nice, but money was sometimes not enough to support us. In 1996, the day came when my dad decided to bring us to the United States. Leaving my town was hard, but it was important that my family stay together. When I left Mexico, I had a lot of special friends and nice teachers. When I first came to the United States, I started at a new school in Chicago. I found care and company at the school, among Hispanic people, my friends, and my teacher. She helped me all the time. My education now is different from the one in Mexico. Here, I am studying in two languages. I feel very happy because I am able to communicate in two languages. In my case, speaking Spanish is an indication of my Mexican heritage. Speaking English is a symbol of my triumph and the struggles that I have as an immigrant in this country. Now that I have been here three years, I am proud to offer my help and support to people who need it. I urge those who come from Mexico and other countries to learn English and to continue speaking their native language, too. It will help them reach out to others. 24. What does the writer think of Mexico? A. She doesn’t like it because it’s poor. B. She was too young to remember it. C. She loves the country and is proud of it. D. She wants to get rid of it so she left. 25. Why did the family move to the US? A. Because they were in need of more money. B. Because the mother found no peace in Quinceo. C Because they wanted to experience a new culture. D. Because the author could have new friends. 26. Which of the following statements about the author is WRONG? A. She wants to be a teacher and support people. B. She enjoyed company of friends at the new school. C. She enjoyed life in Mexico and also in the USA. D. Her new school teaches in English and Mexican. 27. The purpose of the passage is to ________. When I left Mexico, I had a lot of special friends and nice teachers(当我离开墨西哥时,我有很多特别的朋友和好老师)和When I first came to the United States, I started at a new school in Chicago. I found care and company at the school, among Hispanic people, my friends, and my teacher(当我第一次来到美国时,我在芝加哥的一所新学校开始学习。 Here, I am studying in two languages. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks. ” Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on. 28. What made Kate angry one evening? A. She couldn’t find her books. B. She heard the author shouting loud. C. She got the news that her grandma was ill. D. She saw the author’s shoes under her bed. 29. How to Be Organized. D. Learning to Be Roommates. D 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第二段中“Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!”(凯特走进房间。很快,我听到她尖叫道:“把你的鞋子拿走!为什么在我床底下!”)”可知,凯特生气是因为看到作者的鞋子放在了她的床底下。故选D。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was. something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.(从她谈话的语气中,我立刻知道她奶奶病得很重。挂断电话后,她迅速爬到被子下面,抽泣着。显然,这是她不应该独自经历的事情。突然,一股温暖的同情之情在我心中油然而生。)”以及第四段中“Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side.(慢慢地,我收拾好铅笔,把书拿回来,整理好床铺,清洗袜子,扫地,甚至扫到她那边。)” 根据第一段中“I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always, looked for everything. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.(凯特和我在这一年剩下的时间里一直是室友。我们并不总是意见一致,但我们学会了生活在一起的关键:让步、清理和坚持。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者与室友生活习惯不同引发冲突,最终学会相处之道的故事。可知,D选项“Learning to Be Roommates(学会成为室友)”最符合文章标题。故选D。 D Taking the lefthand side in traffic is a habit that goes back possibly as far as to the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, but certainly to a time when people usually carried swords when travelling. As around 85%~90% of people are righthanded, passing on the righthand side would leave drivers more open to attack from people coming the other way. Everyone had to be ready for a fight at a moment’s notice, and that meant keeping to the left so you could get a good swing at your attackers. In 1773, the British government introduced the General Highways Act, which encouraged horse riders, coachmen (马车夫) and people taking their vegetables to the market to drive on the left, and that was that. The Highway Act of 1835 made it the law of the land. However, things were slightly different elsewhere. The Russian government, for example, had already noticed that their people tended to favour the right side, so their first acts on the topic were that they continued to do so. The French were also on the left, but when Napoleon took over the army, he ordered them to stay on the righthand side, too. Some people said this was also because he was lefthanded. Everyone else kept left, but with increasing traffic on the roads in Europe, this began to cause trouble, and slowly, over the course of the next hundred years or so, the European nations began to move over, too. Old designs for cars put the driver in the front and center. But in those countries where car making became an important industry, righthand drive cars with the driver on the left quickly became worldwide. 32. In ancient times people travelled on the lefthand side in order to ________. A. carry swords more easily B. fight back more easily C. travel with swords more easily D. attack other people more easily 33. The Highway Act of 1835 required that in Britain ________. A. travellers should drive on the left B. drivers should be ready for a fight C. people should take vegetables to the market D. people should travel with swords 34. Russian government allowed people to drive on the right because ________. A. Russians didn’t like travelling with swords B. travelling on the left caused much trouble C. Napoleon ordered them to drive on the right D. Russians preferred to travel on the right 35. The underlined words “move over” in the fourth paragraph probably mean “________”. A. drive on the right B. keep left while travelling C. cause trouble slowly D. make righthand drive cars 【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. 根据第一段“Taking the lefthand side in traffic is a habit that goes back possibly as far as to the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, but certainly to a time when people usually carried swords when travelling. As around 85%~90% of people are righthanded, passing on the righthand side would leave drivers more open to attack from people coming the other way. Everyone had to be ready for a fight at a moment’s notice, and that meant keeping to the left so you could get a good swing at your attackers.(在交通中靠左行驶的习惯或许可以追溯到古希腊、古埃及和古罗马时期,但可以肯定,它起源于人们出行时通常携带武器的那个时期。因为大约85%至 90%的人是右撇子,如果都靠右侧行驶,那么迎面而来的车辆司机就更容易受到攻击。每个人都必须随时做好战斗的准备,这意味着要靠左行驶,这样你就能有力地反击攻击者了)”可知,在古代,人们总是走在道路的左侧,以便能更轻松地进行反击。故选B。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“In 1773, the British government introduced the General Highways Act, which encouraged horse riders, coachmen and people taking their vegetables to the market to drive on the left, and that was that. The Highway Act of 1835 made it the law of the land.(1773年,英国政府出台了《一般公路法》,该法鼓励骑马者、马车夫以及携带蔬菜前往市场的人靠左行驶,就这样规定下来了。而1835年的《公路法》则将这一规定正式确立为国家法律)”可知,1835年的《公路法》规定,在英国,行人应该靠左行驶。故选A。 根据第三段“The Russian government, for example, had already noticed that their people tended to favour the right side, so their first acts on the topic were that they continued to do so.(例如,俄罗斯政府就已经注意到本国民众倾向于站在右侧,所以他们在这一问题上的最初举措就是继续坚持这样做)”可知,俄罗斯政府允许人们靠右行驶,这是因为俄罗斯人更习惯于在右侧出行。 故选A。 How to Be a Good Tourist We travel not only for work but also for fun and learning. Do your homework. ___37___ Guides will help you when you get to the site, but is that the best place to go? Is it popular only because the one-day tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit? You’d better check it out. ___38___ Walk around, even if in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers. Help preserve the sites. Some of these monuments are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags and shows. ___39___ This way, you don’t encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites. And here’s the big one — good manners are nearly universal. ___40___ If that doesn’t sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home. A. Experience the place. B. They asked me if I would like to go with them. I love outdoor activities, so I immediately agreed. It was sunny the following morning. I was in a very good mood. I was so excited about hiking since it was the first time that I had hiked with them. I ate a light breakfast. After that, I hurriedly ran out of my house to meet them in the school playground. The jungle where we were going was far from our school. Its name is Salymbia Jungle. It took about three hours to go there by bus, but it wasn’t a boring journey as we were all eager to hike. After we got off the bus, we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is Thomas, said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times and that he was familiar with the route. When we arrived, Thomas told us never to leave the group. He warned us that we would easily get lost in the jungle if we walked alone. Then we began to hike. There were various plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the sounds of the creatures. Sadly, after hiking for about an hour, I found that my watch on my wrist was gone. I realised that my watch had fallen off. It was a gift from my grandma, and I loved it very much. Without thinking, I turned back and tried to find my watch. Since I was the last one walking in the group, nobody noticed it when I walked away. I wasn’t worried about getting lost because I thought I could find my watch easily. However, when I finally found my watch and tried to catch up with my friends, they had gone far. I immediately realised that I was alone and lost. The sky started to become dark and I was very worried. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fortunately, they found me with great effort. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The sky started to become dark and I was very worried. I didn’t know what to do. I called out to my friends, but there was no reply. I tried to look for a way but none of the scenes seemed familiar. I walked for a few more minutes and I got tired and hungry. I felt frightened. Finally, I gave up and took a rest. As I was falling asleep, I heard a human voice. It was unbelievable, and then I heard someone else. I screamed, “Help!” Fortunately, they found me with great effort. My friends Jake and Liam told the guide that they found I was lost, and finally some rescuers were called to help. They led me back to the bus. Seeing me, my friends told me they were really worried. I apologized to them for leaving the group without telling them. Instead of feeling angry with me, they comforted me and helped me calm down to learn a good lesson from it. And I truly learned a good lesson from it—never leave your group members when you’re in a new place. 词汇激活 行为类 ①寻找:look for/search for ②入睡:get to sleep/fall asleep ③救助:help/rescue 情绪类 ①生气的:angry/annoyed ②焦急的:worried/anxious 【点睛】 [高分句型1]. B I am proud to be a member of two cultures. C She loves the country and is proud of it. D. She wants to get rid of it so she left. 25. Why did the family move to the US? A. Because they were in need of more money. B. Because the mother found no peace in Quinceo. C. Because they wanted to experience a new culture. A. explain how the author learns English well as a teen B. help people to understand American immigrants better C. introduce the life in her hometown Quinceo in Mexico D. persuade immigrants not to drop their mother tongue C I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. We didn’t always agree but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on. 28. D Taking the lefthand side in traffic is a habit that goes back possibly as far as to the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans, but certainly to a time when people usually carried swords when travelling. 32 In ancient times people travelled on the lefthand side in order to ________. A. carry swords more easily B. fight back more easily C. travel with swords more easily D. attack other people more easily 33. A. drive on the right B. keep left while travelling C. cause trouble slowly D. make righthand drive cars How to Be a Good Tourist We travel not only for work but also for fun and learning. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
