Scientists find out that adults (成年人) often don’t think their small, nice acts very important. But those small acts of being nice really count.
Two scientists, Margaret and Nick, write about an experiment in a special book on how people think and feel. They want to know, “How do children feel about being nice?”
The two scientists do an experiment at a science museum in Chicago. They talk to 101 children visiting the museum with families and give each child two free pencils. Every pencil is special because there is the museum’s name on it. They can keep both, or they can do an act of kindness—giving one to a stranger (陌生人).
Before they give away the pencil, the scientists ask the children to guess the strangers’ feelings. Will they be happy, or will they not care much? Many children don’t know the answer. Some children say they want to give away the pencil, but they are not sure how the strangers will feel.
After the experiment, the scientists get happy results. The strangers are really surprised after getting pencils! One of them says to a child, “You can give the pencil to anyone, but you give it to me. It makes me happy and excited.” The children also feel good about doing something nice.
This experiment shows that doing something nice can make both the giver and the receiver (接受者) feel happy. Nick hopes this will make children want to be nice more often. Have you ever grown a plant like tomatoes and beans that you can eat at home? It is called (被称为) homegrown produce (自产农产品), because you can grow it at your home.

Scientists find out that adults (成年人) often don’t think their small, nice acts very important. But those small acts of being nice really count.
Two scientists, Margaret and Nick, write about an experiment in a special book on how people think and feel. They want to know, “How do children feel about being nice?”
The two scientists do an experiment at a science museum in Chicago. They talk to 101 children visiting the museum with families and give each child two free pencils.
