【答案】11. C 12. C 13. A

【原文】Huge numbers of unknown plants and animals are in danger. The Earth, according to various estimates, supports between 5 million and 80 million species. “Species,” says Dr Lovejoy, “are disappearing before we have a chance to learn how they might benefit the rest of the world.”
Thousands of kinds of plants could help feed a growing world population. About four out of every ten medicines come from ingredients found in plants. Some animals also provide medicines.
“It’s natural for species to become extinct over millions of years,” says Dr Lovejoy. What’s unnatural is that humans are speeding up the process many times over.” Actually, humans have a great impact on other living things that share the Earth. And people are doing this in four main ways: making the living places of wildlife less habitable, hunting excessively, introducing new species that endanger native wildlife, and making the environment dirty and polluted. These activities affect all species in one way or another, because all life is interconnected.
Is there time to prevent disaster? “Just barely,” say scientists. Worldwide action will be difficult and costly. But scientists agree that action must be taken quickly. Time is running out.
Questions:
11. What percentage of plants provide medicines for humans?
12. Which of the following is not responsible for the disappearing of wildlife?
13. What is the main purpose of the passage?

16.
A. To ask for a pay raise. B. To become a fireman.
C. To be the team leader. D. To present a better image.
【答案】14. D 15. D 16. A
【解析】
【原文】During the seven years that I’ve been working with the aircraft parts marketing team, I’m familiar with each new project assignment. I think it’s fair to say that I contribute a lot more value today than I did about seven years ago.
One reason is that, with each technical project, I bring more technical know-how than I did before. I make a conscious effort to learn from past mistakes and successes and to make sure that each new project benefits from the lessons that I have learned in the previous ones.
Another factor is leadership — the ability to lead troubled projects to success. When our Brazilian passenger aircraft project was in trouble last year, I stepped in. When distribution service projects in Germany nearly fell through this year, I stepped in. I think you’re familiar with my nickname, “the fireman.” I’m the “go-to” guy who gets called in to put out fires and get troubled projects going again.
I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Business today is about creating value at all levels. And I’m all about value.
So, I think you’ll agree that I’m due for a pay raise. Thank you.
Questions:
14. Why is the speaker called “the fireman”?
15. What can we learn about the speaker?
16. Why does the speaker make the speech?

M: It is so strong. I like white coffee.
W: So do I. But I like black coffee today. During my last class I was thinking about coming here and could almost taste the coffee.
M: Sounds like it wasn’t too interesting.
W: I was bored to death. I’m in that psychology class only because it is a requirement so I have to stick it out. The problem is, the professor doesn’t know how to arouse our interest. She just walks in, gives us lectures and assignments. There is no discussion. Do you have any classes like that?
M: I have only one big lecture class—world history—and the professor’s the best. It’s so appealing that I’m always on the edge of my seat. And when we have discussions, the room is filled with electricity.
W: I’m jealous. It is so bad. I have already taken world history.
M: You know, one day it occurred to me that I was lucky to be in her class because I found myself thinking a lot about what she said. Did you ever have a teacher like that?
W: I’d have to think about it.
M: You should come with me to class sometime just to see what I mean. I guess what it really comes down to is her enthusiasm for the subject. I remember at the beginning of this semester; I was not taking anything in school very seriously. I boomed the first history test, but then I started really enjoying school, especially her class.
W: You have got me really curious about this teacher. I think I will visit your class. When does it meet?
Questions:
17. What are the two speakers mainly talking about?
18. Why does the woman take psychology course?
19. In what way does the man’s world history teacher impress him most?

It’s not clear why less sleep would cause someone to have a lower GPA, Creswell said. Sleeping for longer, 49 periods of time allows for REM sleep, a period of unconscious rapid eye movement that corresponds with high activity in the brain. C
One tap of my stick, and the buffalo (水牛) moved forward. I guided them along the road, through the heart of the village. We walked past mud homes and villagers working on their crops. This was life in a small village in Sindh, Pakistan.
Months flew by as I watched over the buffalo daily until Uncle visited. “Brother, you must send Rasool Bux to school. Herding buffalo is not in his future,” Uncle said. My father was persuaded finally. The following week, I started primary school. By the end of the year, I was among the top students in the school and determined to study at a university in Karachi, a big city over 150 kilometers away. “Look at this guy! He will go to study in Karachi?” My classmates laughed and made jokes.
The challenges life set before me didn’t weaken my determination. I turned to writing as a way out. I got published and won competitions, gaining recognition and confidence to keep moving forward.
I began college studies when I was hit with another roadblock. My father couldn’t afford my further education. I decided to find a part-time job. My handwriting was good, and I had developed a passion for calligraphy, so I tried my luck with a leading daily newspaper.
One fine day, I took a bus to Hyderabad alone, a city that lay fifty kilometers from my village. Guided by kind strangers, I presented my calligraphy skills at the newspaper’s counter and was offered an internship (实习) with pay. This was one of the happiest days of my life.
Within a year, under the guidance of senior calligraphers, my skills improved, along with a good salary. Many instructors helped me realize my dreams, leading to an editorial position, advertising work, and the most wonderful milestone of all, an MBA in marketing and advertising from a Karachi university.
Now, when I reflect on the laughter and doubtful glances of the village students, their opinions hold no weight. What truly matters is that I followed the dreams and struggled for them. Just as I guided the buffalo with my stick, I went through challenges and hardships, guiding my life’s course.

A.To tell his professional growth.
B.To show off his calligraphy skills.
C.To offer his solution to difficult situations.
D.To emphasize his travel experiences.
66.What can we learn from the text?
A.All is well that ends well. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.

Universal Rhythm
Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called music “the universal language of mankind.” Now researchers may know why. 67 And these characteristics tend to be those that gather people, the researchers said.
“Our findings help explain why humans make music,” study researcher Thomas Currie from the University of Exeter said in a statement. “The results show that the most common features seen in music around the world relate to things that allow people to coordinate (协调) their actions. 68 It can be a kind of social glue.”
Currie, along with Pat Savage, a doctoral student at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and their colleagues analyzed music from around the world, examining 304 recordings from the online Garland Encyclopedia of World Music. The music samples came from every inhabited continent, from both vocal and instrumental music.
69 They systematically coded the features of each piece of music and employed a comparison system similar to those used by evolutionary biologists to classify and statistically analyze organisms. Although they found no features that were part of all the songs analyzed, the researchers did find dozens of characteristics that were present in a majority of songs across different world regions.
Some of these characteristics were not surprising, such as the music’s tendency to use separate pitches, and equally timed beats and short musical phrases. 70 “It fits that we have two legs, so the music is probably related to the natural rhythms of movement,” said Savage. “And also, two is simpler than three, so maybe it’s easier to process and coordinate.”
A.The researchers analyzed the music samples using a few different classification schemes.
B.They also suggest that the main function of music is to bring people together and bond social groups.
C.some people, as far back as Darwin, have believed that singing evolved as a way for males to gain mates.
D.Others were more unexpected, like the discovery that two-beat rhythms are more popular than three-beat rhythms.
E.A new analysis of music from diverse cultures around the globe reveals that all music shares certain universal features.
F.Previous studies showed that people who experience music together are more likely to rate those who listen with them as helpful.
【答案】E B A D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了音乐具有某些共同特征,介绍了研究人员对此的研究过程。
67.根据上文“Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called music “the universal language of mankind.” Now researchers may know why.(诗人亨利·沃兹沃斯·朗费罗称音乐为“人类的通用语言”。现在研究人员可能知道原因了)”以及后文“And these characteristics tend to be those that gather people, the researchers said.(研究人员说,这些特征往往是聚集人群的特征)”可知,本句主要是在说明音乐的具体特征。
69.根据后文“They systematically coded the features of each piece of music and employed a comparison system similar to those used by evolutionary biologists to classify and statistically analyze organisms. Although they found no features that were part of all the songs analyzed, the researchers did find dozens of characteristics that were present in a majority of songs across different world regions.(他们系统地对每段音乐的特征进行编码,并采用一种类似于进化生物学家对生物进行分类和统计分析的比较系统。虽然他们没有发现所有被分析歌曲的特征,但研究人员确实发现了几十个特征,这些特征出现在世界不同地区的大多数歌曲中)”可知,本段主要说明了研究人员对于音乐的研究过程,A选项中researchers对应后文They。故A选项“研究人员使用几种不同的分类方案来分析音乐样本”符合语境,故选A。
70.根据后文“And also, two is simpler than three, so maybe it’s easier to process and coordinate.(而且,两个比三个简单,所以可能更容易处理和协调)”可知,后文提到了两个比三个简单。由此可知,本句主要关于音乐中与数量有关的内容。故D选项“其他的则更出人意料,比如发现两拍节奏比三拍节奏更受欢迎”符合语境,故选D。
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
The role of siblings(兄弟姐妹)
It’s common knowledge that the family a child grows up in has a huge influence on the child’s attitudes, beliefs and mental health. People usually think that the child’s parents are responsible for this influence, but relationships with brothers and sisters are just as important. Siblings provide children with a unique opportunity to practice interacting with their peers, rather than authority figures. Although friendships can have similar effects, relationships with siblings offer some unique advantages.
During childhood, siblings see each other every day and spend more time with each other than with anyone else, sharing experiences that last all their lives. Siblings are also forced to persevere in their relationships with each other even if they have a falling out. This forces children to practice conflict resolution skills since they cannot leave the familial relationship, as they could with a friend. But a sibling relationship also offers a safe place to discuss difficult topics without fear of abandonment. Moreover, older siblings often teach their younger brothers and sisters about life. They can convey useful skills and advice, but they can also set bad examples, leading their younger siblings to do things that are wrong or foolish.
Once children grow up, they do not see their siblings as often as before since they usually no longer live together. Maintaining sibling relationships now takes work, and if siblings do not get along, they can avoid each other. But many sibling relationships improve in young adulthood as the siblings mature. Sometimes the distance helps siblings enjoy each other’s company when they do meet.
Relationships between siblings vary depending on the ages and personalities of the children involved. Even the best sibling relationships involve some disagreements, but a strong relationship can survive such conflicts. Considering the role of siblings throughout our lives, it’s critical to take the time to cultivate positive relationships with siblings.

How to Check Out a Charity Before You Donate
You hear the words “childhood disease” or “natural disaster,” and it can be hard to say no to donation requests to help. But your instinct to be generous always should be 31 by a healthy dose of doubt. The recent crackdown launched by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on four cancer charities a good reminder to make sure your donations are put to good use. So how can you make sure that the money you give doesn’t end up lining the pockets of the 32 ? Follow these tips.
Hang up on telemarketers. The cancer charities charged with fraud by the FTC used telemarketing calls to raise donations. If you get a call from a group asking for money, you might feel 33 to make a donation on the spot. But the FTC cautions that you shouldn’t rush to say yes but 34 any requests to give over the phone. Telemarketing companies often keep a significant portion of the funds they raise. You’re better off 35 the middleman and contacting a charity directly to make a donation.
Don’t wait for charities to come to you. To avoid feeling the pressure to give to an organization that reaches out to you, figure out what 36 is important to you. Then find charities that are 37 it. You can browse charities that have been evaluated by Charity Navigator by category to identify groups you want to support. Having a(n) 38 plan will make it easier to avoid making impulse donations.
Research before you give. The FTC 39 against the four cancer charities shows that just because an organization claims to do good doesn’t mean it actually does. That’s why it’s important to find out as much as you can about how an organization will use your donation before you give. You can start with third-party evaluations and ratings at sites such as Charity Navigator and Charity Watch, which examine charities’ 40 , governance and effectiveness.

There are countless reasons to stay up late; however, here’s one good reason to go to bed.
The less a student sleeps every night, the lower their grade-point average (GPA) will be, according to a two-year study of the sleep habits of more than 600 students.
Researchers found that every lost hour of average nightly sleep at the start of an academic term was associated with a 0.07-point 41 in a student’s end-of-term GPA.When a student slept less than six hours a night, the 42 of lost sleep on a student’s grades was even more 43 , said David Creswell, the lead author of the study.
“You’re 44 this sleep debt,” Creswell said. “And that has a pretty negative role 45 people’s academics.” Sleep, especially uninterrupted sleep, helps the brain 46 and memorize information it has learned. And when someone is sleep-deprived, attention span and memory are also damaged.
But students face a variety of “ 47 pressure” that keeps them up late, Creswell said. The average student in the sample group 48 fell asleep at about 12:00 p.m. and these students slept about 6 hours a night.
It’s not clear why less sleep would cause someone to have a lower GPA, Creswell said. Sleeping for longer, 49 periods of time allows for REM sleep, a period of unconscious rapid eye movement that corresponds with high activity in the brain. Creswell said he 50 that a regular pattern of 51 sleep creates a “sleep debt” over time, leaving students unable to concentrate. “These students are going to attend their class with a ton of sleep debt, and they’re having trouble staying focused and 52 in classrooms,” Creswell said. “Those things can really harm your ability to really 53 with the material. What’s more, sleep is so important that it is like the 54 that holds students’ lives together in lots of aspects.”
“Fundamentally, it 55 : If we’re not sleeping well, all systems are not a go,” Creswell said. “Our body is not prepared for the day ahead of us and what we’re asking it to do if we don’t have that good, basic amounts of night-time sleep.”

64.Who played a key role in the author’s childhood?
A.His father. B.His uncle. C.His classmates. D.His brother.
65.Why does the author mention the internship experience in Hyderabad?
A.To tell his professional growth.
B.To show off his calligraphy skills.
C.To offer his solution to difficult situations.
D.To emphasize his travel experiences.
66.What can we learn from the text?
A.All is well that ends well. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.Two heads are better than one. D.One cannot be in two places at once.
