Britain appears to be in a mental-health crisis. In the past decade no European country has seen a greater increase in the use of antidepressants(抗抑郁药); now only the Portuguese and Icelanders are popping more of the 31 . Around 4.5m Britons were in contact with mental-health services in 2021-22, a rise of almost l m in five years.
There are a few reasons why Britons might be unhappier than their 32 . One global poll found that teenagers in Britain were some of the loneliest in the world, with few supportive relationships and a low sense of purpose and meaning: all risk factors for poor mental health. Britain’s poorest households are also 33 off than their equivalents in France and Germany, for example, which makes them more vulnerable to conditions such as anxiety and depression. And Britain’s health system can seem more 34 than those in most other rich countries. In England alone, some 3.8 m are waiting for mental-health treatment.
Those factors might explain why more people are 35 to medication. Another reason is increased awareness. Campaigns around depression and anxiety have been particularly successful in Britain. That is 36 a good thing. A reduction in humiliation (蒙羞) has encouraged more people to seek help. Taking antidepressants – or using mental-health services — has become much more acceptable.
But there is a 37 to this, as The Economist recently reported. Surveys suggest that Britons are increasingly 38 common human emotions, such as stress and grief, as mental illnesses. “You’re going to lose any sense of what mental illness is if you start to 39 it to 30%, 50% of the population,” says Adrian Massey, author of a book called “Sick-Note Britain”.
For all the focus on anxiety and depression in campaigns, severe mental illnesses still receive too little attention. This is a problem: according to the GBD, Britain has the highest rates of severe mental illness in Europe. The causes of such conditions are unclear, but seem to involve a 40 interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Illegal drug misuse, for which Britain has among the highest rates in the region, also plays a role.

“Please, sit down,” Mrs. B said, indicating the chair beside her bed. We chatted 42 about the 43 on her windowsill — her two daughters, many grandchildren, even great-grandchildren. Then she grew 44 .
“What were you thinking about when I walked in?” I asked, sensing she might be waiting to see if I would 45 her to the truest place where this conversation could go.
“I know I’m not going to be around much 46 . I’m at peace with that. But my grandson called yesterday. He’s 47 that he can’t make it to see me before I pass.”
“Have you thought about writing him a(n) 48 ?”
Mrs. B seemed to 49 a little. “I can dictate (口述) if you’d write for me,” she said.
I walked down the hall and 50 pens and paper materials. Mrs. B 51 her grandson’s letter and decided to dictate others — for her daughters, the other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Then she 52 her church community and her bridge club too.
She asked me to put away the letters before I left. “I asked God to send me a(n) 53 this morning,” she said. “Now I know it was you.”

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
It turns out that humans aren’t the only ones taking mathematics tests. A group of cognitive (认知的) scientists are training bees to perform simple addition (加法) and subtraction (减法).
For the experiment, the scientists lured (诱惑) individual bees with sugar water. “She flies back to the hive, gives it to the other bees, and two minutes later she’ll come back and do it again,” Dyer said, a scientist from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. They taught and tested 14 bees over the course of the experiment — one bee at a time.
To learn the rules, a bee first would be shown cards printed with a number of shapes in one of two colors: blue, if they were supposed to add one to the shapes on the card, or yellow, if they were meant to subtract one shape. Then, the bee would choose an answer to the problem by flying to one of two presented solutions. If it chose well, it found itself near a solution of delicious sugar water. If it chose poorly, however, it would be punished with a bad-tasting drink. The researchers found that each bee picked the correct answer in both addition and subtraction trials about 70 percent of the time.
Dyer said, “Problem-solving requires both long-term memory and short-term memory. Long-term memory allows the bees to remember that blue and yellow equate to (等同于) separate mathematical rules. Short-term memory lets them recall the actual numbers in a particular problem.”
“It’s assumed that humans are very complex, and there’s a decreasing level of complexity going away from humans,” said Muth, an animal cognition researcher who wasn’t involved in this study. But in fact, complex awareness, like the mathematical problems solved by bees, can be made up of relatively simple ways.
That doesn’t explain why bees might have evolved (进化) the ability to figure out mathematical problems, though. One possibility is that bees didn’t evolve to do addition and subtraction. They just evolved to be smart enough to figure it out.
Dyer said that observing a tiny animal with a brain that has less than a million neurons (神经元) learn a very complex task makes him think, “Wow, what can humans achieve?”
56.What task did the scientists set for the bees?
A.Separating blue from yellow B.Figuring out different shapes.
C.Learning simple mathematical rules. D.Tasting water of two flavors.
57.What role does memory play in problem-solving?
A.Long-term memory plays a bigger part.
B.Long-term memory contributes to recalling.
C.Short-term memory is not necessary.
D.Short-term memory is as important as long-term memory.
58.Which of the following statements is TRUE about bees?
A.They can remember all the colors in the wild.
B.Their intelligence becomes higher as they evolve.
C.They experience a decreasing level of complexity.
D.They are by nature good at mathematics.
59.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Human achievements can be limitless. B.Human brains deserve good study.
C.Humans must fully develop neurons. D.Humans are good at observation.

The fashion industry is responsible for up to ten percent of the world’s carbon emissions (排放). But what if you could get clothes more sustainably and spend less money?
Enter rental fashion (服装租赁). Companies charge you a small part of the store price to borrow a piece of clothing. They’ll take care of the cleaning once you send it back. These companies advertise sustainability as one of the best reasons to rent: By sharing clothes among more people, they satisfy shoppers’ desire for new looks while avoiding the emissions that new clothes would produce.
The only thing is, of course, there are trade-offs. Shipping you those clothes creates carbon emissions, and so does washing them after you’re done with them.
Then how can you make sure that the environment gets the most benefit out of your money?
First of all, rent clothes you don’t wear frequently. Some companies rent out high-end clothes, while others offer more everyday options. The best clothes to rent are fancy clothes for special occasions. And higher-quality pieces are more likely to last through multiple (多次的) wears. If a rented piece of clothes gets worn more times than it would if one person owned it, that can definitely make a difference. Meanwhile, casual clothes such as jeans already get frequent wears and are better to own than rent.
You could also rent from a nearby location and pick up your clothes by yourself. If you were to use an environmentally friendly method, such as public transport or biking, that would even be better.
Of course, buying less can be one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to live more sustainably. By buying fewer new clothes, you can help cut down the need for clothing production, which is responsible for most of emissions in the fashion industry.
63.According to the first two paragraphs, the rise of rental fashion is meant to ______ .
A.change shopping habits B.reduce environmental harm
C.cut clothing production D.follow fashion trends easily
64.Which can best explain the underlined “trade-offs”?
A.Options. B.Costs. C.Preferences. D.Differences.
65.Which would be the greenest clothing habit according to the text?
A.Renting expensive clothes.
B.Renting clothes delivered easily.
C.Renting frequently-worn clothes.
D.Renting clothes with self-pick-up nearby.
66.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To encourage buying less.
B.To introduce changes in fashion.
C.To explain rental fashion and give advice.
D.To warn of the damage done by fashion industry.

Decoding Your Emotions
Almost all of us can remember a time when we were angry with a friend or anxious about going to a job interview. We experience such a wide range of emotions in everyday life, and these can influence the decisions we make — important decisions, such as whether we should quit a job, to the more trivial like what we’re going to have for dinner. 67 We have to figure out whether they’re feeling happy or sad, fearful or angry, jealous or amused, and determine how to respond while handling our own emotions.
Emotions are controlled by many different chemicals, or neurotransmitters and electrical impulses. 68 Between two nerves is a small gap called synapse, where neurotransmitters carry messages between the gaps. Depending on the neurotransmitters that are released and not released this chemical and electrical surge provides us with the capability of feeling emotions.
Emotions have been studied as far back as the 4 century BC. The Greek philosopher Aristotle attempted to identify the number of core human cmotions. During the 1970s, psychologist Paul Ekman identified six basic emotions — happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust-these provide the basis for more complicated emotional experiences we have. 69 Since then, the number of human emotions has continued to be a subject of debate, with some suggesting that there are only four emotions, while others suggesting 27, and some say there are infinite number as long as you can express them.
70 For example, in Japanese culture it is considered offensive to display negative emotions in front of another person. Americans, however, are encouraged to express their emotions regardless of the person present. Despite the cultural differences, our emotions play a crucial role in guiding us through life, affecting the decisions we make and the ways we connect with others. Our emotions are what makes us human. By expressing our emotions-and comforting others in their of need — we strengthen our relationships, and provide a source of comfort to one another.
A.Electrical impulses are sent along a nerve, which connect to many more nerves.
B.Emotions also decides the way we interact with our family, friends and colleagues and even ourselves.
C.In fact, the way we express our emotions can vary across cultures.
D.Based on the study, distinct cultural backgrounds’ contributing to different emotions has its reasons.
E.Ekman later expanded his list of basic emotions to include shame, guilt and relief.
F.Additionally, emotions have long-lasting impacts on our interpersonal relationships too
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
What Is Emotional Eating?
Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We’ve all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downing cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test. But when done a lot — especially without realizing it — emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being.
Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. But understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.
One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. More often, though, it’s the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or distraction in food.
Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. A kid who is given cookies as a way to stop crying may learn to link cookies with comfort. It’s not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what’s going on.
We’re all emotional eaters to some extent (who hasn’t suddenly found room for dessert after a filling dinner?). But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain. The trouble with emotional eating (aside from the health issues) is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you did. That’s why it helps to know the differences between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Next time you reach for a snack, check in and see which type of hunger is driving it.

71.Emotional eating can be harmful to people’s fitness. Generally, it’s produced by both negative and positive emotions, or even devastating blows, which, however, is mainly caused by numerous pressures in everyday life. We easily slide into emotional eating patterns, but we can avoid it if we have an insight into the real cause. To get rid of the troublesome results of emotional eating, we should learn to distinguish physical hunger from emotional hunger.

【答案】11. B 12. D 13. C
【解析】
【原文】When my family moved to America from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States. I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. Once, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry. In the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respected the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them anymore; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
Questions:
11. Why did the speaker bring the couple their food very fast?
12. What happened to the speaker after this experience?
13. Which of the following statements is true?

16. What is the main problem of travel guidebooks?
A. Its high price. B. Its lack of individuality.
C. Its unreal introduction. D. Its outdated information.
【答案】14. B 15. A 16. B
【解析】
【原文】For many well-educated, rich Chinese travellers, buying a copy of Lonely Planet is the first task before taking a vacation abroad. Founded in 1973, Lonely Planet is the biggest guidebook series in the US, UK, and Australia. It’s published in 11 languages including Chinese. But when the BBC confirmed on March 19 that it had sold the entire Lonely Planet series to American billionaire at a significant financial loss, many commented that the deal signified the final song for the printed guidebook. The rise of the Internet and the popularity of smartphones has become a burden on the print media. Why would a traveller bring a heavy guidebook when he can download its digital content to his smartphone in an instant? Furthermore, alternative and free travel content is readily available on the Internet, from Wikivoyage to Trip Advisor to blogs written by amateur travel writers. “If you’re in your 20s or 30s, the first place you’re going to go for travel information is a social network, ” said Howard Blumenthal, who writes the Digital Insider blog. With so many people contributing content, you don’t have to go to Fodor’s to get hotel information because there’s Trip Advisor and its competitors. But the Internet is not the only reason that guidebooks are in decline. Kevin Rushby, author of four travel books said that the main problem with the guidebook is that it has a comprehensiveness that can kill any sense of personal exploration.

【答案】63.B 64.B 65.D 66.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章介绍了服装租赁以及如何减少服装租赁对环境的影响。
63.推理判断题。根据第一段“The fashion industry is responsible for up to ten percent of the world’s carbon emissions (排放). But what if you could get clothes more sustainably and spend less money?(时尚产业的碳排放量占世界总排放量的10%。但是,如果你能更可持续地买到衣服,花更少的钱呢?)”和第二段中“These companies advertise sustainability as one of the best reasons to rent: By sharing clothes among more people, they satisfy shoppers’ desire for new looks while avoiding the emissions that new clothes would produce.(这些公司将可持续性宣传为租赁的最佳理由之一:通过与更多人共享衣服,它们满足了购物者对新造型的渴望,同时避免了新衣服产生的排放)”可知,租赁服饰的兴起是为了减少对环境的影响,故选B。
64.词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“Shipping you those clothes creates carbon emissions, and so does washing them after you’re done with them.(把这些衣服寄给你会产生碳排放,穿完后洗它们也会产生碳排放)”可知,邮寄衣服寄会产生碳排放,洗它们也会产生碳排放,这是关于租赁衣服的环境代价,trade-offs意为“成本,代价”,故选B。
65.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“You could also rent from a nearby location and pick up your clothes by yourself. If you were to use an environmentally friendly method, such as public transport or biking, that would even be better.(你也可以在附近租衣服,然后自己去取衣服。如果你使用一种环保的方式,比如公共交通或骑自行车,那就更好了)”可知,从附近租衣服且自己去取是最环保的方式,故选D。
66.推理判断题。根据全文内容,结合第二段中“Enter rental fashion (服装租赁). Companies charge you a small part of the store price to borrow a piece of clothing. They’ll take care of the cleaning once you send it back.(进入服装租赁。借一件衣服,公司会向你收取商店价格的一小部分。你送回去后,他们会负责清洁的)”和第四段“Then how can you make sure that the environment gets the most benefit out of your money?(那么你怎样才能确保环境从你的钱中得到最大的好处呢?)”可知,文章介绍了服装租赁以及如何减少服装租赁对环境的影响,故本文目的是解释租赁时尚并提出建议,故选C。

【答案】One possible version:
Emotional eating can be harmful to people’s fitness.
