This Is Why Most Grocery Stores Lack Windows
When you’re grocery shopping, have you noticed that supermarkets often lack windows, and if they have them, they’re only at the front of the store? You may 31 pay attention to the architectural features of the building because you’re there to shop for food, not admire the layout.
But that’s the point. If grocery stores had windows, would it be easier to ignore your main shopping task? There are all sorts of supermarket 32 grocery stores have to keep you shopping longer. It’s no 33 that grocery stores often lack windows and there are a few reasons behind this trend.
One of them is a (n) 34 to keep people inside longer. Stores want to create a separate environment within their store where the outside world doesn’t exist. In spite of the rain or sunshine, your attention remains 35 . The technique also prevents shoppers from noticing it’s getting dark out. Keeping daylight out of stores can help preserve the products, as some fresh produce can go bad faster in direct sunlight. Too much sun exposure can even cause packaging 37 to fade. Having windows in stores would also reduce the space 38 to display products. Not to mention, 39 with strong structural supports, outside walls can hold the heavier items on the shelves of those walls.
Due to the high cost of constructing windows and storefronts, along with the potential security risks they probably 40 , retailers (零售商) choose to minimize the number of entry points into their space in order to cut expenses and improve safety.

Deep in the forests in the Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, the five lotus-flower-shaped towers of the large Angkor Wat stand tall towards the sky. When tourists arrive at the main gate, they will be attracted to the large temple (庙宇).
Angkor Wat was part of a city as big as London. This city was at the center of an empire that covered areas from southern Vietnam to Laos, and from the Mekong River to Eastern Myanmar between the 9th and 15th centuries. By around 1500 A.D., the Khmer capital was left behind empty, most likely after heavy floods and long droughts. Later, forests were all around the temples and buildings that lay hidden until their rediscovery in 1860.
Angkor Wat’s inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1992 marked a milestone in the country’s recovery. The action of the protection and development of this cultural site is a typical example of international solidarity and proves to be one of UNESCO’s most important achievements. Thirty countries and a group of experts were brought together to work on scientific projects for the restoration (修复) of these amazing sites. The aim was to support long-term and environmentally friendly progress.
Angkor has become a living laboratory showing the beauty of historic buildings. Walking through the temple, people see hundreds of beautiful figures on the walls telling the stories of these ancient people, and long hallways lined with many attractive supports. The fact that Angkor was taken off UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger just twelve years later is a great achievement for most people of Cambodia.
A large number of visitors from all over the world make their journey there enjoying the beautiful scenery. The large site now supports 700,000 local people and attracts some five million visitors whose flow (流动量) must be controlled each year. The local organizations in charge are carrying out several projects to encourage better development of the tourism industry. In this way, they hope to improve the lives of communities.
56.What probably caused people to leave the Khmer capital?
A.The national wars. B.Its lack of forests.

In the Hollywood movie The Martian, actor Matt Damon plays an astronaut who grows food on Mars (火星) to survive alone on the red planet.
After seeing the movie, Washington State University physicist Michael Allen and University of Idaho food scientist Helen Joyner decided to carry out a case study helping students figure out how to farm on Mars. In the case study, students had to imagine they were mining on Mars and decide how to feed themselves there before starting on the journey. They got advice from Allen and Joyner on how to select crops and take the challenges of growing crops over long periods on Mars. Students used a scoring system to select three foods to plant on Mars.
Allen found the results impressive: among 30 students, “no two people have ever gotten the same answer”, he said.
Human travelers to Mars will likely have to make use of resources on the planet rather than take everything they need with them on a spaceship. This means farming their own food on another planet, one that has a very different ecosystem (生态系统) from Earth’s.
One challenge for those who would like to live on Mars is the fact that there can be no farming tools. Like real astronauts, students taking part in the study cannot take farming tools with them. As Joyner put it to his student astronauts, “You are starting with nothing.” Besides, students also have to deal with a very limited choice of diet. “If you had to eat a single food for the rest of your life, could you do it?” Joyner asked.
But Allen believes the case study is about more than farming and eating on the Red Planet. “I’m not teaching about growing food on Mars,” Allen said, “I’m teaching about living with choices. I’m teaching about problem solving.”
63.What made Michael Allen and Helen Joyner carry out the case study?
A.A trip. B.A book. C.A movie. D.A lecture.
64.In the case study, students have to ______.
A.start with everything B.try different tools
C.watch the movie D.select three foods
65.What might be the challenge for people living on Mars?
A.They have a limited choice of diet. B.They have a lot of farming tools.
C.They have to take part in the study. D.They have to select crops on Mars.
66.Michael Allen thinks that the case study teaches the students ______.
A.how to look for foods on Mars B.to know more about Earth
C.how to solve problems D.to learn about gardening
Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Health in space
Astronaut Frank Rubiales has returned to Earth after 371 days in space. 67 Unlucky for him, but very lucky for scientists who want to see what effects spending an extended time in space has on the human body.
Being in space can affect physical wellbeing. 68 Astronauts are recommended 150 minutes of exercise per day to counteract this. Also, space traveller’s eyes can be affected by the way that fluids act in zero-gravity. Outside the protection of the Earth’s atmosphere, astronauts are exposed to much higher levels and different forms of solar radiation. This can potentially cause long-term health problems, such as cancer.
It’s not just physical health that is affected by being in space. Our mental health can be damaged if we don’t get enough sleep. On earth, our bodies respond through circadian rhythms (昼夜节奏) to the Sun rising and setting to help us sleep, but astronauts on board the International Space Station see 16 sunsets and sunrises every day. This means that avoiding sleep deprivation is a challenge. Isolation, and spending all your time with a small group of people can also affect mental health. Along with isolation, is the pressure that comes from being constantly monitored by experts back on Earth. With possible future missions to Mars predicted to last three years, tensions within the crew could become heightened. 69
Developing new techniques and technology to support astronauts’ health will enable more ambitious future missions. 70 The Canadian Space Agency is using its expertise to improve health care for people living in remote regions. The technology that supports robots used in space is now being used in surgery in normal hospitals, while pressure suits are being used to treat post-pregnancy complications.
A.Astronaut Harry Hartfield reports an example of this where a colleague threatened to open the airlock and drain the oxygen from the spacecraft.
B.The sacrifices of astronauts contributed to a giant leap in space exploration.
C.It can also help those of us who are staying on Earth.
D.Weightlessness caused by a lack of gravity can lead to a loss of bone and muscle mass.
E.The missions do great harm to both physical and mental health of astronauts.
F.It was only supposed to be 180, but a technical fault stopped him from returning as planned.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
A Wise Way to Make Families Rules
All groups, of whatever size or nature, need standard operating procedures. Without them, groups may very well fall into confusion, chaos and conflict. The functions that rules can serve are indispensable. When it comes to parenting, making rules can make a big difference in our family as well. Actually, the issue is not whether our families need rules. We do need them. The real issue is how to motivate all family members to comply with (遵守) them.
At some time in our lives we all have felt unmotivated to comply with some rule or policy that we had no voice in making. Denied the opportunity to participate in establishing a rule, most people feel imposed upon and resentful of the new rule. But when people actively participate in setting a rule or making a decision that will affect them, they are more highly motivated to comply with it. We call this the Principle of Participation, and it has proven its effectiveness in families as well.
When children are given the opportunity to participate in setting rules or making decisions that will affect them, several good things happen. Children feel better about themselves — having more self-esteem (自尊心) and self-confidence. Such a good effect is due to their feeling that they have gained more “fate control” over their own lives. They also feel they are equal members of the family with an equal voice in making decisions and establishing rules — they’re part of a team, not second-class citizens. This means that families that function collaboratively and democratically will have closer and warmer relationships than those in which the adults act as bosses or authorities expecting the children to obey the rules made for them.
Another important reason for encouraging the full participation of family members in decision making is that it often produces higher-quality solutions to problems. Two heads (or three, or four) are better than one. Shared decisions will be based not only on the knowledge and experience of the adults but also on those of the children. The admonition (告诫) that father knows best should be challenged now.

Here is the news. An 81-year-old Japanese woman, Shigeko Sasamori, lives through the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, Japan. That happened in the closing days of World War II. She recalled her experiences as a guest speaker at a high school in New York City on Monday and promoted her message of peace.
“If you have not started yet, be aware, become more aware of what unclear means, and we should eliminate nuclear weapons and nuclear wars,” she said to the students in the packed auditorium.
After the bombing, she was badly burned and eventually she went through 35 operations. She was adopted by an American family and now lives in California. “As long as I live, I will speak all over the world to many people because I feel we went through such horrible life. We should not have anyone go through experiences like we did,” she said. She also added that the world is dangerous because of the existence of nuclear weapons.
Among the audience was Clifton Truman. He is the grandson of the U.S. president, Harry Truman, who ordered the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Clifton Truman is visiting schools in the area. He said that it was important to hear the survivors’ firsthand story.

Welcome to “Writer’s World”. Text messaging is becoming increasingly popular all around the world. It means sending a message anywhere in the world from a mobile phone. We use a special sort of shortened language for this. It’s a bit like an email in some ways, but it has lots of advantages over that. For example, speed. You can communicate instantly with someone and it needn’t make any sound or disturbance. It’s also an easy way of keeping in touch, perhaps even with people you normally wouldn’t have telephoned or written to because of shortage of time or of cash. It’s very quick to do and doesn’t cost much.
Today we focus on Text Message Portry Copetition. This competition was started last year by some people in London and it is held once a year. Competition entries are invited from people to send poems by text message. The poems can use no more than 160 characters, you know, letters or words or punctuation marks. Some of the best poems can say a lot in very little space. And that is the whole art of text messaging, isn’t it? And texting means you can be really brief! For example, instead of writing Y-O-U, we out just the letter “u”. Last year about 7,500 entered the competition. They composed their poems on the train, in traffic jams, on boats, on buses, anywhere, in fact. The second competition is just being started. There are really good cash prizes for winners, plus the chance to see your poem displayed on posters on 7,000 London buses and in the underground stations. For those who want to enter, just text your poem to 88801111 and you can find more information about it on the internet at www.textpoetry.com. It’s great fun and you’ve nothing to lose. Good luck!

14. What are the advantages of text messaging?

【答案】63.C 64.D 65.A 66.C

【答案】F D A C
67.根据上文“Astronaut Frank Rubiales has returned to Earth after 371 days in space.(宇航员弗兰克·鲁比亚莱斯在太空生活371天后返回地球)”以及后文“Unlucky for him, but very lucky for scientists who want to see what effects spending an extended time in space has on the human body.(这对他来说是不幸的,但对那些想要了解长时间在太空中对人体有什么影响的科学家来说是幸运的)”可知,后文提到了生活371天是不幸的,可知本句是在说明原先应该停留的时间。
69.根据上文“Isolation, and spending all your time with a small group of people can also affect mental health. Along with isolation, is the pressure that comes from being constantly monitored by experts back on Earth. With possible future missions to Mars predicted to last three years, tensions within the crew could become heightened.(孤立,把所有的时间都花在一小群人身上也会影响心理健康。除了与世隔绝之外,还有来自地球上专家不断监控的压力。由于未来可能的火星任务预计将持续三年,机组人员内部的紧张局势可能会加剧)”可知,上文提到了宇航员要面对机组人员内部的紧张局势,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文,对此进行举例说明。故A选项“宇航员哈里·哈特菲尔德报道了一个这样的例子,一名同事威胁要打开气闸,把飞船里的氧气吸干”符合语境,故选A。
70.根据上文“Developing new techniques and technology to support astronauts’ health will enable more ambitious future missions.(开发支持宇航员健康的新技术将使未来的任务更加雄心勃勃)”以及后文“The Canadian Space Agency is using its expertise to improve health care for people living in remote regions. The technology that supports robots used in space is now being used in surgery in normal hospitals, while pressure suits are being used to treat post-pregnancy complications.(加拿大航天局正在利用其专门知识改善边远地区人民的保健服务。支持太空机器人的技术现在被用于普通医院的外科手术,而压力服被用于治疗妊娠后并发症)”可知,本句主要引出后文,说明开发支持宇航员健康的新技术是如何帮助在地球上的人。故C选项“它也可以帮助我们这些留在地球上的人”符合语境,故选C。

V. Translation (15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
Do you think (that) the dinosaur fossils in the Museum of Natural History are worth watching several times?
Do you think (that) the dinosaur fossils in the Museum of Natural History are worth watching several times?
Having been away from the hometown for years/ Returning hometown after many years, he is having the reunion dinner with the family members harmoniously, raising a toast to health.
表示“阔别家乡多年”可译为be away from the hometown for years或者return hometown after many years,与主语he是主动关系,用现在分词形式,先于谓语动词的动作,用现在分词的完成时也可以,表示“其乐融融地吃着团圆饭”可译为have the reunion dinner with the family members harmoniously,陈述正在发生的事情,用现在进行时,harmoniously“和谐地”,副词修饰动词作状语,表示“为健康干杯”用raise a toast to health,用现在分词作伴随状语,故译为Having been away from the hometown for years/ Returning hometown after many years, he is having the reunion dinner with the family members harmoniously, raising a toast to health.
The reason why stealth marketing wins the consumers’ favor is that it is more convincing than conventional advertisements./The reason why stealth marketing is favored by consumers is that it is more convincing than conventional advertisements.
主句的be动词搭配单数主语The reason,应用is。 The reason why stealth marketing wins the consumers’ favor is that it is more convincing than conventional advertisements或The reason why stealth marketing is favored by consumers is that it is more convincing than conventional advertisements。
(in case) (汉译英)
Several amateur science enthusiasts have invented a robot that/which can make sugar figures, in case the intangible cultural heritage handicraft may/should be lost.
的”可以用定语从句来表达,先行词是“robot”,关系代词用that或 which引导定语从句,翻译为that/which can make sugar figures;“以防”用短语“in case”,其后接从句,“这一非遗手工艺失传”翻译为this intangible cultural heritage handicraft is lost,故整句翻译为Several amateur science enthusiasts have invented a robot that/which can make sugar figures, in case the intangible cultural heritage handicraft may/should be lost.

VI. Guided Writing (25分)
76.Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to share my thoughts regarding the upcoming Problem-Solving Workshop. This initiative is truly commendable as it will provide students with valuable support in addressing both academic and personal challenges.
To make the workshop more effective, I would like to suggest implementing a peer mentoring system where experienced senior students can guide their juniors. Additionally, organizing regular theme-based sessions focusing on common student concerns such as exam stress or time management would be highly beneficial. To encourage wider participation, we could also introduce an anonymous problem submission box to help shy students voice their concerns comfortably.
I sincerely hope these suggestions will be helpful. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

A project called “I Am A Scientist” is giving middle and high school students the opportunity to interact with modern-day researchers. Below are stories from some of the scientists who are involved in the program.
Noor Al-Alusi, Epidemiologist (流行病学家)
“I have a black belt in Taekwondo (跆拳道). I am driven by a deep desire to help others. I believe that all people have a fundamental right to health care.”
Her work: During the Zika epidemic, Al-Alusi met with the communities that had been hardest hit by the virus, using data and mathematical models to keep them safe and healthy.
Background: Al-Alusi was born in California but her parents emigrated from Iraq. This experience provided her with an understanding of the health needs of the immigrant community.
Ryoji Amamoto, Neurobiologist (神经生物学家)
“I’m a huge sports fan. I’ve traveled to more than 40 countries. I’m a licensed scuba diver but a terrible swimmer. I hated science in high school.”
His work: Amamoto studies the tiny but amazing brains of animals that have a superpower — the ability to regenerate. He learns what factors help these special brains regrow, so that we can try to treat diseases like Parkinson’s.
