Why different species start looking exactly the same
Is it better to stand out from the crowd or be similar to the background? For birds, the answer is complicated. While peacocks(孔雀) show off their brightly colored feathers to attract mates and ward off predators(捕食者), other birds find it 31 to hide themselves by imitating the looks of other birds.
Groups of birds flying together often come from the same species, making it hard to 32 one from another. However, some groups of birds including two or more species take on similar 33 , which is an uncommon phenomenon. “They all share random features, like feathers on head or yellow bellies(腹部), which makes them almost 34 . You can’t really tell them apart without looking at their 35 .” says Scott Robinson, a famous scholar. His new study suggests 36 another bird’s appearance is not a coincidence(巧合) but rather an evolutionary method to increase their chances of survival. Looking like a bird from a dominant species helps reduce attack from other members and appear more 37 to potential predators.
“In imitation, you often want to look like something because there’s an advantage to being that other thing. You want species to think you’re 38 or low-profitable target.” says Rebecca Kimball, a professor of biology. “In grouping birds, one idea is that this has more to do with a predator’s ability to 39 a target. When there are a group of birds moving around, it may be easier for predators to identify an individual that has a distinct color pattern.”
While it may not seem like it at first, imitating other birds is helping to create more 40 species. Not only do birds imitate more than one species as they grow up, but their appearance varies over time.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
One evening in 1951, astronomer William Morgan was walking home from Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin when he looked up at the night sky and had “a creative insight burst”. It solved one of the greatest mysteries of astronomy.
An “aha! Moment”, such as Morgan’s great insight, is a new idea that arrives suddenly, often bursting into an ongoing stream of thought. It may pop up while someone is actively trying to solve a problem.
Individuals tend to have more analytical (分析型的) or insightful thinking; we aren’t limited to one or the other. It’s up to the mood. Imagine you are in Africa 25,000 years ago. You see a lion a couple of meters away and are seized with fear. Your thinking immediately becomes very careful and analytical because if you make one mistake, you are finished. Can the lion see me or hear me? If I run, is the lion close enough to catch up?
You manage to escape. That evening you are back in the cave, sitting by the fire and sharing food with your people. You are enjoying safety. In your protected shelter, you can have creative thoughts and do something imaginative. So 25,000 years later, we find the innovative stone tools and breathtaking cave paintings that inspired future generations.
An obvious way to increase insightfulness is therefore to relax when you aren’t anxious or rushed. Another way is expansion in space: When you are in a large room or the great outdoors under a starry sky, as Morgan was — your attention expands in the large space. You will consider the whole rather than the parts, thus enhancing insightful thinking.
Modern society’s unrelenting demand for productivity and speed often rejects insight. Even so, remember the value and power of insights and the conditions that spark them.
As Morgan shows, when it comes to an “aha! Moment”, the sky is the limit.
56.How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By sharing a secret to success. B.By raising a new idea.
C.By describing an astronomer. D.By telling a true story.
57.Why does the author refer to “Africa 25,000 years ago”?
A.To stress the importance of insightful thinking.
B.To illustrate the necessity of analytical thinking.
C.To prove the power of creativity and imagination.
D.To show the influence of mood on thinking styles.
58.Which of the following situations might help boost an insight?
A.Studying hard for a math exam. B.Taking photos on a vast grassland.
C.Working on the computer in an office. D.Promoting products in a supermarket.
59.What does the underlined word “unrelenting” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Basic. B.Typical. C.Endless. D.Unreasonable.
根据第一段“One evening in 1951, astronomer William Morgan was walking home from Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin when he looked up at the night sky and had ‘a creative insight burst’. It solved one of the greatest mysteries of astronomy. (1951年的一个晚上,天文学家威廉·摩根从威斯康辛州的叶凯士天文台走回家时,他抬头仰望夜空,突然有了“创造性的洞察力”。它解决了天文学上最大的谜团之一。)”可知,作者在第一段中通过讲述一个真实的天文学家William Morgan的故事来引出话题,即“aha! Moment”(顿悟时刻)。故选D项。
57.推理判断题。根据第三段“Individuals tend to have more analytical (分析型的) or insightful thinking; we aren’t limited to one or the other. It’s up to the mood.(个体往往有更多的分析性思维或洞察力思维;我们不限于其中一种。这取决于心情。)”及后文举的非洲25000年前的例子可知,作者提到“25000年前的非洲”是为了说明心情对思维方式的影响。故选D项。
58.细节理解题。根据第五段“Another way is expansion in space: When you are in a large room or the great outdoors under a starry sky, as Morgan was — your attention expands in the large space. You will consider the whole rather than the parts, thus enhancing insightful thinking.

Hi there! My name is Erica. I’ve struggled with my weight since I was eight years old. At my peak, I weighed 320 pounds. Over the years I tried every diet you could think of. I tried personal trainers and fitness camps. The result was always the same — I’ d lose 30-50 pounds; then gain back 40 pounds. I tried C25K (Couch to 5K) so many times because my husband enjoyed running and I tried to like it as well. I hated it and couldn’t help but be reminded of my school days and collecting popsicle (冰棒) sticks for each circle (I was always last).
More time went by and the only activity I could bring myself to do in public was Zumba. February 2017 was a game-changing time in my life. Something clicked after an embarrassing moment that involved burpees (立卧撑) in front of a group at my kids’ school event. The next day I asked my husband if he would join me in figuring out my health. (At this time I was 280 pounds.) After losing 15 pounds, I decided to give C25K one more shot (after more than a dozen failed times).
In June 2017, I ran for five minutes without stopping. By the end of July I ran my first mile. Reaching the mile was huge in my world because I had built up a mile as if it were a marathon. By December 2017, I completed C25K successfully! A few months later I ran my first race, Texas Ragnar relay. After that, I completed my first half marathon. I caught the running bug and by July I hit a huge milestone — 100 pounds down!
After the half marathon, my husband and I were determined to continue running. We kept training for no event in particular. We needed more support for what we were planning — a full marathon.
63.What might C25K be?
A.A fitness course. B.A marathon event.
C.A school game. D.A running program.
64.What made the author determined to restart running?
A.Her husband’s advice. B.Her terrible overall health.
C.Her Zumba class experience. D.Her burpee embarrassment.
65.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase in paragraph 3?
A.Fell in love with running. B.Joined a running club.
C.Showed a gift for running. D.Found running partners.
66.Where can the text be read?
A.A lecture for fund-raising. B.A report from a running club.
C.A forum for running stories. D.A speech about running benefits.
【答案】63.D 64.D 65.A 66.C
根据第一段中“I tried C25K (Couch to 5K) so many times because my husband enjoyed running and I tried to like it as well. I hated it and couldn’t help but be reminded of my school days and collecting popsicle (冰棒) sticks for each circle (I was always last). (我多次尝试C25K(从沙发到5公里),因为我丈夫喜欢跑步,我也试图喜欢它。我讨厌它,不禁想起我的学生时代,每跑一圈就收集冰棒棍(我总是最后一名))”和第三段中“By December 2017, I completed C25K successfully!(到2017年12月,我成功完成了C25K!)”可知,C25K与跑步相关,且是一个有过程、可完成的项目。由此可推断C25K是一个跑步计划。故选D项。
64.细节理解题。根据第二段中“February 2017 was a game changing time in my life. Something clicked after an embarrassing moment that involved burpees (立卧撑) in front of a group at my kids’ school event. The next day I asked my husband if he would join me in figuring out my health. (At this time I was 280 pounds.) (2017年2月是我生命中改变游戏规则的时刻。在孩子们学校活动中,在一群人面前做立卧撑的尴尬时刻过后,我突然开窍了。第二天,我问我丈夫是否愿意和我一起解决我的健康问题。(这时我体重280磅))”可知,是做立卧撑的尴尬经历让作者决定重新开始跑步。故选D项。
65.词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句“After that, I completed my first half marathon. I caught the running bug and by July I hit a huge milestone — 100 pounds down!(在那之后,我完成了我的第一个半程马拉松。我caught the running bug,到7月我达到了一个巨大的里程碑——减重100磅!)”以及前文作者成功完成跑步相关项目,且之后继续坚持跑步可推知,“caught the running bug”意思是爱上了跑步,所以完成了减肥目标,与“Fell in love with running”同义。故选A项。
My name is Erica. I’ve struggled with my weight since I was eight years old. At my peak, I weighed 320 pounds. Over the years I tried every diet you could think of.(大家好!我叫艾丽卡。我从八岁起就一直在与体重作斗争。在我的巅峰时期,我重达320磅。多年来,我尝试了你能想到的每一种饮食)”和后文内容可知,作者讲述了自己尝试各种减肥方法失败,但在因为一次尴尬经历后重新开始跑步,并逐步取得进步,完成跑步项目,成功减重100磅的故事。整篇文章围绕个人减重故事展开。这更适合在一个分享跑步故事的论坛上呈现。故选C项。

Immersive Art Draws People In
With bold, swirling brushstrokes (绘画技巧) and vivid colors, Vincent van Gogh’s stirring Starry Night brings to life a turbulent (汹涌的) sky. It’s one of the most recognizable paintings in the world. And gazing at the scenic canvas can make museum visitors feel starstruck.
But seeing this masterpiece on a gallery wall isn’t the only way art fans can experience its impact 67 . They find themselves surrounded by shimmering colors that dance before their eyes and ripple (涟漪) at their feet. These exhibitions digitally project moving images onto walls, floors, and sometimes onto viewers themselves. They are examples of immersive art.
68 . While it can be hard to characterize, it’s generally a multisensory, an interactive event that engages viewers and lets them feel like part of the artwork. One thing is certain — these exhibitions have been wildly popular — selling out tickets in cities worldwide.
Van Gogh gained fame only after his death. In fact, the 19th-century painter sold just one painting during his lifetime. But now he is immersive art’s biggest superstar. His work has been showcased in various exhibitions featuring immense images. 69 . One show, Van Gogh Alive, has appeared in 65 countries since 2011. It even features a signature scent for visitors to sniff. Shows of other artists — including Monet, Renoir, and Chagall — have lit up venues, too.
The popularity of immersive art has been powered party by social media. As visitors post selfies featuring van Gogh’s art or videos of friends stepping into a fantastical fridge, these experiences draw bigger and bigger crowds. 70 . That’s because many curators and creators share a common goal — to help more people get into art!
A.Immersive art doesn’t simply mean sitting in a glass case or fitting in a frame.
B.The art work is animated and accompanied by music, voices, and background sound.
C.In fact, some exhibits give people a chance to be enveloped by van Gogh’s celebrated painting.
D.Meanwhile, traditional museums are following the trend and applying immersive technologies
E.Critics once described his work as a multidimensional mystery house leading to secret passages.
F.More important is the ability to bridge the gap between traditional art spaces and modern audiences.
【答案】C A B D
67.根据后文“They find themselves surrounded by shimmering colors that dance before their eyes and ripple (涟漪) at their feet. These exhibitions digitally project moving images onto walls, floors, and sometimes onto viewers themselves. They are examples of immersive art.(他们发现自己被闪烁的色彩所包围,这些色彩在他们眼前跳舞,在他们脚下荡漾。这些展览以数字方式将动态图像投射到墙壁、地板上,有时也投射到观众身上。它们是沉浸式艺术的例子)”可知,后文提到“他们发现自己被闪烁的色彩所包围,这些色彩在他们眼前跳舞,在他们脚下荡漾”,即说明这样的展览可以让人们置身于名画之中。故C选项“事实上,有些展览让人们有机会置身于梵高的名画之中”符合语境,故选C。
68.根据后文“While it can be hard to characterize, it’s generally a multisensory, an interactive event that engages viewers and lets them feel like part of the artwork. One thing is certain — these exhibitions have been wildly popular — selling out tickets in cities worldwide.(虽然很难描述它的特征,但它通常是一个多感官的互动活动,吸引观众,让他们觉得自己是艺术品的一部分。有一件事是肯定的——这些展览非常受欢迎,在世界各地的城市门票都卖光了)”可知,本段主要是在介绍沉浸式艺术的特点。故A选项“沉浸式艺术并不仅仅意味着坐在玻璃柜里或装进画框里”符合语境,故选A。
69.根据上句“His work has been showcased in various exhibitions featuring immense images.(他的作品曾在各种各样的展览中展出,有巨大的图像)”可知,本句进一步说明梵高画作的沉浸式展出效果。
70.根据后一句“That’s because many curators and creators share a common goal — to help more people get into art!(因为许多策展人和创作者都有一个共同的目标——让更多的人进入艺术领域)”可知,本句主要说明为了让更多人认识艺术做出了努力。故D选项“Meanwhile, traditional museums are following the trend and applying immersive technologies.(与此同时,传统博物馆也在顺应潮流,运用沉浸式技术)”符合语境,故选D。
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
Light the Cities of the Future
A previously unlit cycle path in the Netherlands has recently drawn our attention. It has been resurfaced with a material that consists of thousands of shining stones in order to create a well-lit route. The Van Gogh Path, so called after the artist who lived in the town of Nuenen in 1883, combines the traditional with the contemporary in a gesture that acknowledge ledges Van Gingh’ masterpiece The Starry Night, but also shows the way ahead for city lighting. The Van Gogh Path is not a single case; it is not difficult to foresee a time when natural materials could help light the cities of the future.
Why should we care about city lighting? What’s wrong with current electrical city lighting anyway? Well, the problem that it causes is two-fold. First, of course, electrical lighting in most cities comes from non-renewable resources. According to the International Energy Agency, almost 20% of global electricity is consumed for lighting, which is responsible for high levels of carbon emissions. But there’s also the belief that electrical light itself is a form of pollution by destroying our view of the night sky.
From the above reasons, then, it seems wise to investigate other approaches. The city of Glasgow is attempting to use intelligent street lighting to monitor how citizens interact with the urban landscape and minimize electrical consumption and thus emissions. This “Smart City approach” is seen by many as the way of the future, but some designers aren’t convinced. They are pioneering the altogether more original approach of using materials from the natural world in order to replace electrical light entirely. They believe that this new “technology” can one day completely replace microchips and digital systems as we find better ways of making use of the light-producing mechanisms (制) that already exist in the natural world.

We take turns to sweep the classroom to ensure that it is always clean and tidy.
用动词短语take turns to do... We take turns to sweep the classroom to ensure that it is always clean and tidy.
The small acts of kindness can also bring huge differences to this world.

Best regards,
Li Hua
Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, excited to contribute to the English motivational slogan collection for senior students. My suggested slogan is: “Rise with perseverance. Reach for the Stars.”
The slogan highlights two key elements. First and foremost, “perseverance” emphasizes the importance of persistence through challenges, which aligns with the demanding senior journey. Besides, “reach for the stars” encourages ambitious goals while maintaining a hopeful tone. “Rise” and “Reach” create a rhythmic flow, making it easy to remember. Additionally, the metaphor of “stars” symbolizes limitless potential, inspiring students to strive beyond their comfort zones.
I believe this slogan balances practicality and motivation, perfectly capturing the spirit of senior students. I’d appreciate it if you could consider my idea.
Best regards,
Li Hua

Section B

Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

76.Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, excited to contribute to the English motivational slogan collection for senior students.
Best regards,
Li Hua

Section B
