A. advertise for some newly issued stamps B. send a notice about designing stamps C. call on people to respect modern heroes D. encourage people to be frontline workers B I lost my phone when I was on holiday four months ago. With no phone to use on my way back to Milan, I decided to buy a book at the airport before boarding the plane. There was a discount on Stephen Hawking’s Brief Answers to the Big Questions, and while not necessarily an easy read for the non-reader I was at the time, it touched on some of the subjects I’m most passionate about so I decided it was worth the £5.99. I paid for it. To my great surprise, I read the whole book on that two-hour return flight — and so my love for reading began. I was confused. Before then, I used to buy books fairly often, hoping I’d read them, knowing months would go by and I wouldn’t even open them. So I wondered. What was different this time? After carefully analyzing the situation, I came up with an explanation. Now I realize, most books on my reading list as a child came from one of three places: suggested books, school books, and “to read before you die” books. As a kid, I didn’t have much experience when it came to books or reading. So when I decided to pick up a book, I thought these were the ones I should read and I believed I would surely enjoy them. Then I ended up thinking of myself as someone that simply didn’t like reading. It is obvious, in hindsight (在事后看来), that I actually really enjoyed reading. The few times I got to skim through a book that felt right, I would devour the whole thing in a matter of hours. Many people approach reading in the wrong way, so they finally end up disliking it the way I did. Keep on reading books you don’t like, and you’ll eventually convince yourself it is reading you don’t like. So just make sure, you are reading books that touch on subjects you are actually passionate about — don’t be scared to create your unique bookshelf. 41. What surprised the author? A. He lost his phone. B. The book was very cheap. C. The book was easy to read. D. He finished reading the book. 42. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2? A. Explore ways to create a reading list. B. Introduce his particular taste in books. C. Explain why he used to be a non-reader. D. Analyze how children’s books are classified. 43. What books does the author advise people to read? A. Those that attract their interest. B. Those that enrich their knowledge. C. Those that are popular among readers. D. Those that are written by best-selling authors. 44. What’s the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 3? A. eat greedily B. read eagerly C. run quickly D. spend unwillingly 45. What is the best title for the text? A. Learning from a great book B. How I fell in love with reading C. Creating a successful study tour D. How I developed a reading habit C Confucius said, “In a group of three people, there is always something I can learn. Choose to follow the strengths of others, and use their shortcomings to reflect upon ourselves.” As you can see from what Confucius said, everyone that we come across can teach us something useful. As long as we reflect on the lessons learnt from and by other people,we can continuously improve ourselves. But take note that when you reflect on these lessons, you apply some wisdom to each lesson because each situation is unique although they share some common principles. We can learn a lot from everyone. We always tend to think that we can only learn from those who are higher in status or have more knowledge than us, but that is not really the case. We learn from those who are lower in status than us as well, because the experience and knowledge of each person is very different. The best thing about this type of learning, reflecting other people’s strengths and shortcomings onto ourselves, is that we do not to pay for the mistakes that are made. The only cost to us is the time that is needed to learn about and reflect on these lessons from other people’s lives. As we all know, some mistakes can be ones which people cannot afford to make, for instance, a broken friendship or a financial loss. Thus constantly using other people’s strengths and shortcomings to reflect upon ourselves makes us realize the costs of these mistakes and reduces the possibility that we will make similar mistakes. What can we do now to learn from others? By keeping our eyes and ears open. Be observant and able to realize what strengths and shortcomings other people have. A lot of people in this world like to complain about their lives. Listen to them and make your own assessment and from your own assessment, reflect upon your life and make improvements where necessary. 46. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A. Confucius thought we should learn from strengths of others. B. Only from those who have more knowledge than us can we learn C. It is by reflecting on the lessons learnt by others that we can improve ourselves. D. Reflecting upon other people’s strengths and shortcomings can help us make fewer mistakes. 47. The underlined part “this type of learning” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to________ A. learning from other people’s mistakes B. learning from others experiences C. finding what strengths and shortcomings other people have D. reflecting others strengths and shortcomings onto ourselves 48. From the fifth paragraph, we learn that________. A. sometimes we can afford the costs of a broken friendship B. our reflection will necessarily reduce our mistakes C. some reflection will help to improve ourselves D. reflection will stop us from making any mistakes in life 49. The passage is probably taken from________. A. a magazine about life B. a book about travel C. an advertisement D. a research report 50. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. How to improve oneself. B. How to use the shortcomings of others to reflect upon ourselves. C. How to reduce the mistakes in one’s life. D. How to learn from other people’s strengths and shortcomings. Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how. Plan your time carefully. When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time. Find a good place to study Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject. Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer. Develop a good attitude about the tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried. There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. 51. What is the best title of the passage?
